Lynn Kenneth Pecknold: Biography Lynn Kenneth Pecknold is an art educator by trade, but a storyteller by profession. It is his visuals, rather than verses, that rouse and run off the page. Influenced by the evolving tessellations of M.C. Escher, Pecknold creates mystifying and mesmerizing symmetries both painterly and puzzling. His most recent work deals in digital realms. Using software he designed, Pecknold applies the principles of reflection and replication to drawings, paintings and photographs. "He explores the shapes and symbols that exist in everything from found objects to natural elements like driftwood. He is obsessed with the geometry of mirrored and fractal shapes and his pieces reveal unexpected new figures when these duplicate and opposite reflections take form." Born in Victoria, British Columbia, Pecknold took an early interest in art; whether it be fashioning his own whistles out of found objects or relishing his first taste of First Nations artists’ bold designs on a field trip to a local museum. It wasn’t until his undergraduate years at the University of British Columbia in the early sixties that he discovered his own artistic language. He enrolled with aims of becoming an architect, but found himself in art history and print making classes, which lead him to a change of major. After graduating with a degree in art education, he went on to show at the Mary Frazee Gallery and Avelles Gallery in Vancouver; and the Mauntauk Club and Eg Gallery in New York, where he also attended the Pratt Institute. In 1969, he became a full-time art educator and since then has acquired over 35 years of teaching experience. He currently resides on Vancouver Island with his wife, Sandra. They have three daughters. He retired from his teaching in 2007 to continue to follow his dream – creating art.

Lynn Kenneth Pecknold : Artist Statement What I Make, How I Make it, Why I Make the Art That I do I use my drawing, painting and photography in conventional ways for one part of my artistic work processes. Additionally, I employ self-designed software to create imagery I fragment, break up, reconstruct and reflect into art pieces, using new work, or sometimes using already created pieces. I basically work within shapes that contain invented and discovered bits of reality from nature and throw away items. I use a stream of consciousness thought process to create what I call “reflections” as I draw and design. Mining the vision, ideas and inspiration of what I do involves looking at unfinished yet-to-be-told stories in my life. I love mystery, the subliminal, the understated, the mist, the fog, clear starry nights, snow and things that are thrown away, discarded and ignored. My faith, curiosity, and imagination lead me to search for hidden meanings, for subliminal images, “reading the cloud”, “finding the frost”, “clarifying the creek”. I am a “junk collector” and always ask myself, “How could I use that?” “What’s hiding within that image?” Natural forms, chains and locks, tomb stones, shrines, obelisks, folded metal, barbed wire, bread clips, paper clips, bolts, nails, rubber stamps, Xs, crosses and rubbings make up my artistic meal. The ignored, disposable, and waste are the desserts. An explorer of the world of imagery, both real and imagined, I am compelled to travel a visual path on a continuing journey. My art works are vehicles for me to use in my search for meaning, thought and story. Often, I am fascinated with reflection, both as in a mirror and as in ruminations. My hope is that my work will be seen as maize, a puzzle, a visual journey, a thought provoking statement, or as a subliminal question. Strong influences include M.C. Escher, Harold Towne, Gordon Smith, Bob Steele and Aboriginal Artists and several thousands of great art students!

February 15, 2007 Re: Lynn Pecknold I am writing to support this artist and his work. I see many artists at different stages in their careers. This artist has a background of distinguished work in art education. I am very impressed with his personal imagery and would be very interested to see him have exposure in a gallery situation. I do not write this lightly. I feel his work justifies being seen.

Letter
Bob Steele Associate Professor (Emeritus, UBC) 3853. West 15th Ave. Vancouver, B.C. V6R 3A1 January 27,2007 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN SUBJECT: LYNN PECKNOLD I have been asked to write a letter of support for my former student and long time friend, Lynn Pecknold, of Port Alberni, B.C. I am delighted to do so. Lynn is about to retire from teaching in the public school system but it is not in his nature to retire in the larger sense. Over the years I have been impressed by Lynn's work in the community both inside and outside the school system. He has the a rare gift of being able to rally students around exciting learning situations and citizens around projects related to community growth and welfare. I witnessed this first hand many years ago when he was a driving force in the Deer Lake Printmakers Society, this community's first public printmaking studio which still exists under another name. Combining a career as teacher/administrator and artist is challenging in the extreme but Lynn has managed to do it. The ideal model for teaching art to older children, young people and adults is to make art with them. The most successful art teachers break down the traditional barriers separating pupil/master to share in a creative process. It requires a talent for creating enthusiasm for selfdiscovery and providing an atmosphere, as well as the physical and technical processes and materials necessary to set it in motion. Mr. Pecknold has found in modem technologies ways to satisfy his own creative needs and the parallel needs of pupils. Now that he is retiring from teaching he plans to spend more time developing the artistic side of his career. Lynn is currently looking for opportunities to show his graphic art and would wish me to comment on this aspect of his life work. I will attempt this task by quoting from an email I wrote recently in response to one of his prints. I invite the reader to extrapolate this singular response to my general appreciation of his work. It has the merit of being spontaneous and unsolicited 15
To set the stage, imagine two 'Rorschach' images, one superimposed on the other. First: A light ground image presents a jewel-like center, a crystalline form that could be thought of as a natural phenomenon - such as a snow flake - or as a man-made symbol for triggering a contemplative experience. Second: From either side extending from the left and right vertical edges two butterfly-like forms enclose the crystal with their 'wings'. The background 'Rorschach' is light in tone, the butterflies are dark. Here is what I wrote on receiving a copy of this print in an e-mail from my friend. "I have been admiring 'Folded'. The underlying 'rorschach' provides a mystical field reaching out left and right, up and down in a word, universal - leaving a jeweled center clearly visible. One could say that it is the result of 'chance operations', the product of technological processes rather than of conscious design. The second is superimposed and consists of two identical 'butterfly' shapes that surround and enclose the mystical centre. Are these the Brazilian butterflies that shake the polar regions with the mere flutter of wings? 'Folded' is a nice title! What is lovelier than a resting butterfly unfolding its wings to the sun preparing for immanent flight? It is a lovely metaphor, a poetically ordered image in a world that often strikes us as chaotic and unreasonable. It evokes childhood and techno sophistication! I see an exciting retirement for you, Lynn, as you start to tend your own imagistic garden more assiduously!"
