This is Winter Reimagined – the season of silence, of

long nights, and short days; of reflection, of celebration, and of remembering those we love; of wishing and dreaming, of hoping and wondering. The song that plays over and over again in my mind is Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence”. The Winter issue is always a special time for me as publisher because this issue about soulful reflection about the impact that we have on each other in even the smallest ways. This issue, we are talking about sustainability and a commitment to our local economy. From the first issue that I published in Winter 2012 to this, my 12th, my purpose in creating this magazine strengthens with each word, each story, as the voice of who we are as a community strengthens. Winter Reimagined is about looking reflection, looking back and moving forward, inspired by a magnificent cover photo imagined and brought to life by Lisa Wicklund. This is about reimagining new ways of giving back and strengthening our community. My hope for you and yours this winter is that you find it in your heart to listen to the sounds of silence, and to give back in the ways that you can.

t 3100 13th Avenue in Regina, there is a bronze brick building with a door. And on the door is a mirror. I reach out and turn the doorknob, and walk through. A large red velvet vintage chesterfield beckons to me. I feel compelled to sit down and take in the sights of this space.

conventions, where rules and what’s expected are put asunder to experience the marriage of fashion and art, and an unquestionable passion for financial and artistic independence. Owner Lisa Wicklund prides herself on providing a place where people can relax and enjoy a personalized shopping experience.

To walk through the door of Seed Sustainable Style is to discover yesterday and tomorrow, to turn one’s back on

Seed Sustainable Style in Regina’s Cathedral District is a haven for those in search of original art and fashion for the past six

years. This past fall, owner Lisa Wicklund transformed the space into a Gothic Victorian Garden. Tones of black, cream, green and red wrap the space, creating a showcase for the one of kind, independently crafted pieces from makers like Body Bag, Sara Armstrong, LLY Atelier, Ruelle, Dinhba Design, Melow, Marilyn E. Baril, Nuit, Ovate and Lisa Wicklund. The scent of Woodlot candles and LVNEA wild crafted perfume and body care fill the air.

The reclaimed materials, from wood shelves, to a tin wall, each have a story, like the wood door that was found in a ditch. An archway adorned with moss leads to a desk of refashioned planks rendered from owner Lisa Wicklund’s family barn now long gone. To the right is a gold jacquard draped changing room with a screen door. Individual pieces from originally handcrafted jewelry and scents are meticulously placed, and waiting to be loved. Seed Sustainable Style is the place where people come to experience original, handcrafted design created by Canadian emerging fashion designers and artists. But it is more than a boutique filled with beautiful creations. Seed is the manifestation of Lisa Wicklund’s social and economic vision that artists are able to make a living making art. Her career spans 20 years ranging from art, fashion, food and floor trading to name a few. Her personal fashion influence is rooted in avante garde with a Japanese – Scandinavian twist and a tendency toward industrialism. She is funny, defiant and notoriously private, but when she walks into a room, her presence is undeniable; her energy fills every corner and every crevice, and splashes up against the walls like a tidal wave. Art is her passion, the designer’s represented in her store are like her children, and her two dogs Liam, a style savvy Greyhound and Miguel, a cheeky Whippet, both rescues, are her loves.

Seed was created six years to provide an alternative to mainstream fashion that would support emerging Canadian artists in independent design with a sustainable focus and a commitment to local economy.

and no Internet. Today, there are more opportunities to promote their work, but they need to produce high quality, unique pieces, and have excellent processes in order to be competitive and relevant.”

“Turning my back on convention, walking away from the rules, or what’s expected”, says Lisa, “is the essence of what Seed is all about. Here, we are constantly evolving. We are always challenging the public to engage in a different view of what is wearable, lovable, artistic fashion. Art is what drives me. I collect art the same way I collect clothes.”

“My customers are those who appreciate fashion and art. I choose designers from two schools of thought. One – I look for quality, smart production and indestructible construction. Two – I tend towards minimalist industrialists who skirt the edge of dark fashion with Japanese influences and a druid-like presence.”

“When I first started Seed, the concept of sustainable was very new. It was mostly associated with yoga wear, because of the fabrics that were available and being used. But sustainable fashion means something more now. It is about economic and artistic independence - giving young artists a way to sustain their lives. Seed is an ode to art, independent makers of fashion and the environment. It is a labour of love.”

“Ethically produced means in house design and production, but a lot of small designers still have to go to small production houses, or hire sewers and that costs a lot of money. For Canadian designers it is a real struggle. Especially from Saskatchewan.”

Helping emerging artists build careers is something Lisa understands personally. “I model and teach sustainable business practices. I pay each designer for the order before I receive it, which is almost unheard of. That way, they have the cash flow to produce the order. I encourage them to develop good production practices so they can be profitable and keep producing. When I started out in my first shop in the 1990’s, there was no opportunity, no Etsy

“As an artist and an entrepreneur representing artists and entrepreneurs, I feel like it should be possible to make a living making beautiful and functional pieces. I feel that the work of the artist speaks for itself, and that has value. Wearing something beautiful and unique, or burning a candle that has been created by an artisan’s two hands not only sets our customers apart, but it creates a successful and sustainable business environment to encourage independent design.” A beautiful shop, filled with independent and thoughtful design, and a space for emerging artists to create, evolve and grow their careers. That is Seed Sustainable Style.

What is wealth management? Am I “wealthy” enough to qualify for the service? Wealth management goes far beyond investments; it involves the whole spectrum of managing your financial affairs – from planning for a goal such as a child’s education or early retirement, to risk management, tax and estate planning, and deciding on the strategies that can help make those plans a reality. This holistic approach means that you have the benefit of working one-on-one with an advisor who takes a more complete look at your life—which results in a more complete financial strategy for you. The wealth management process begins with a meeting between you and your advisor. During the meeting, you’ll share information about your goals, your current situation and your long-term concerns and needs. It’s a getting-to-knowyou process that, for RBC Dominion Securities Wealth and Investment Advisor Barb March-Burwell, is crucial. “The more you can tell me about yourself,” she says, “the more accurate your wealth management road map will be.” This personalized road map reflects the high level of service that Barb gives her clients. Her whole team will get to know you to ensure that you receive consistent, well-informed service, no matter which team member you’re dealing with. “From day one, everyone on my team will know you, your needs and your goals,” she says. “You will never have to start from the beginning and repeat your story.” As for who is wealthy enough to qualify for wealth management through an Investment or Wealth Advisor, Barb does not have a minimum account size for new clients. “Our clients come from all walks of life, and from all portfolio sizes,” she says. What they do have in common, however, is the peace of mind they get from working with Barb.

“Barb helped me work towards and eventually plan my retirement with very little stress,” says Barb’s client Michelle Mandin. “With Barb’s vast knowledge, she was able to offer many different options while always listening to my ideas and answering all my questions. She continues to determine the most effective and beneficial way to use my pension and investments while maximizing all tax benefits. Together, we continue to ensure that my retirement future looks bright, safe and secure.” To begin the process of working with a professional Wealth and Investment Advisor, Barb recommends that you call to make an appointment to find out if the service is a good fit for you. “We hear from a lot people who didn’t realize they had the option of dealing with an Advisor, or who had never questioned how they manage their money,” she says. These same individuals usually had a fragmented approach to their investments, often dealing with several financial institutions at once. As a Wealth Advisor with Canada’s leading firm, Barb and her team bring discipline and structure to the process of managing your financial life. “We get to know you on a deeper level, and can offer more personalized service and plans specific to your needs.”

The Reimagined Home: Transformations in Home Fashion

BY Ly n n L a rs on Ar m st r ong

I have a passion for decorating. I love the idea of being able to literally transform a room and a point of view with a new colour on the walls. I find painting blissful, and hanging wallpaper therapeutic. There is nothing like a great transformation in home fashion. This spring, we transformed a late 1970’s small bathroom and bedroom into the master bathroom of our dreams, inspired by a memory of my grandparent’s farm that I loved as a child. The final touch was the wallpaper, so I visited Corrie and Bonnie at CK One Home Accents. If you have ever wallpapered a room, you know that you don’t choose wallpaper, it chooses you. As I opened the book, this black and white damask pattern that hails from the Netherlands called out to me. Three weeks later it was on my wall, but it looks like it has always been there, waiting for me to discover it. Read the details of this renovation on our website at www.skymagzine.co. We would love to share your story. Source Guide: Script by Kenneth James, from the Eijffinger Series of books. It was made in the Netherlands. Pattern #347588

ckOne Design

Where the Magic Happens There is nothing like an afternoon of pouring over wallpaper books and dreaming about rooms yet to be. CK One Home Design is the place where such great transformations take place. I ascend the stairs, and I am in paradise, with 200 wallpaper books, and a myriad of choices to take me away. Interior decorator Corrie Krzysik opened CK One Home Design and Consulting Inc. in 2012, focusing on home decoration and renovation. In February 2013, she expanded into the 12th Avenue location in Regina, bringing with her Bonnie Schick, formerly of Yarnton Decorating for 19 years. CK One Home Design provides design and consulting services for business and residential. “Wallpaper has been with us for centuries. As home design trends change, wallpaper makers and designers respond. We are seeing now that wallpaper is not just wallpaper. It is art.”

By Ly nn L arson A rmst r ong

“The right wallpaper provides the perfect accent to bring out the beauty of a room. It can bring a couch to life, add personality to an office, bling up a gym or a recreational space, create a cozy room for winter evenings, transform a bathroom into a spa, or create a beautiful restful environment for a bedroom. There are no limits to what wallpaper can do. It truly is the most versatile decorating element.” “Choosing the paper is the hardest thing I do,” says Corrie. “They are all so beautiful. And the possibilities are endless. New designs are always arriving, and the papers are more like art.” “The key to choosing a wallpaper is to understand the client’s space, how the space relates to other rooms in the house, their furnishings, and their lifestyle. But when a client sees the wallpaper of their dreams – the one that captures their imagination – they know it.” “To begin with, I would recommend they do a feature wall, rather than a full room. We can give a few pointers that will help make the install a little smoother. Or we can arrange for installation,” says Bonnie. “Sometimes envisioning the room with the wallpaper can be a challenge, so we have launched a new tool to help clients envision the design. The client uploads their room, and then images of the wallpaper are uploaded, so he or she can see exactly what the paper will look like in their space, with their furniture.” “Our favourite part is seeing the final product in the space. It is magical.” CkOne Design and Consulting Inc. 315 12th Ave.E Regina http://www.houzz.com/pro/ckone/ckone-design-and-consulting-inc | Email: ckonehomeaccents@yahoo.ca 306.924.4663

hen the television series Corner Gas wrapped up seven years ago, makeup artist Krista Stevenson packed up her makeup kit and opened Blush Beauty Bar, Regina’s first beauty boutique, located on 14th Avenue, in Regina’s Transition area. One year later, Sarah Hegglin was to join her, after studying at Blanche Macdonald Centre in Vancouver, and working in the luxury makeup industry. Together they have created Blush Beauty Bar, a luxury beauty boutique that knows no limits to pampering their clients. Seven years later, they have doubled the size of the boutique and expanded their services to include makeup and skincare, esthetics and hairstyling. In July, hair stylist Erica Hillier joined the team, bringing 10 years of hair experience to Blush customers. In 2016, Blush will be expanding the hair team.

On any given day, Blush Beauty Bar is abuzz with events like hair and makeup sessions, (Makeup 101 / Hair 101) or shoppers looking for that perfect lipstick to get them through the day. On Thursday women come to Blush to experience threading, an ancient hair removal method commonly practiced in Eastern countries, which removes the entire hair follicle, lasting up to six weeks.

“We have been collaborating with a lot of other artists – we have quite a few freelance makeup artists and hair stylists that will help us with events.”

Being the first beauty boutique in Regina, their connections in the makeup and movie industries have helped to create a strong fan base for the business. In 2015, Krista was the key makeup artist for two movies this year in Regina, Archie and Adventure Club. But this luxury beauty business has also found its way into the hearts of the Rider Nation. “In 2015, we supplied the 620 CKRM Saskatchewan Rider Cheer Team with makeup and did makeup for the calendar. Our team was invited to some games. We’re both Saskatchewan Roughrider Fans, so we loved it, and it gave us the opportunity to wear green lipstick.” “Blush Beauty Bar also did the makeup for the Coach’s Show,” says Sarah. “It was a lot of fun, and the coaches were great to work with.” Blush Beauty Bar team is constantly changing and evolving their product lines. “We are continuously trying new products, and while it’s not always possible, we try to have exclusivity for our customers. We have introduced brands to Regina, and we are proud of that. It gives us an opportunity to keep searching

Zena Amundsen:

The Art of Giving Back, and Going Home “Life has a way of presenting us teaching moments. Asking the question, ‘what is my why’ and finding an answer is a process. It takes time. This is where my approach begins, because it helps me to know how I can provide the best advice possible when it comes to building the financial part of your why.” Zena is practiced in the art of helping people make the changes in their lives that they need through financial planning and investment. In 2015, after eight years in practice, she opened her own practice as a certified financial planner, certified divorce financial analyst and a certified cash flow specialist. Her experience and education match her passion. Zena has a special passion for helping women succeed. She founded Women Wine & Wealth Regina, to create a supporting community of women who want to take charge of their financial future, expand their knowledge, build their confidence regarding money and wealth and be empowered. The group meets quarterly. A guest speaker presents on inspiration and financial topics. Zena also serves YMCA as a Heritage Committee board member. “I was involved with YMCA as a youth; it was there I learned to lead and have confidence.” Today, she encourages and promotes the legacy of charitable giving to ensure the YMCA is here for future generations. “Sometimes the most difficult or challenging times that we encounter are just signs that it’s time to look deeper, and understand your why. Asking the tough questions is how we find our why – our home – and then we can start to give back in the best ways possible.” Watch for Zena’s column in our Spring Issue: Ethical Practices

Lessons about Leading, the Cowboy Mystique and a Horse Named Red By Lor elei R. Johns, C.A .

I have fond memories of watching westerns on television with my Dad when I was a child. John Wayne was a favorite cowboy – hero in our home, even with my Mom. Somehow, at the end of day, we just knew everything was going to be all right, as John Wayne would ride away on his horse Dollar into the sunset. The cowboy mystique still inspires me to this day. There is a code of ethics among cowboys, that includes living each day with courage; taking pride in work; doing what has to be done; being tough, but fair; keeping promises; listening more and talking less; and knowing when and where to draw the line. When I launched my Accounting practice in 2012, it was important to carry this code of ethics into my business and to be a part of building a stronger community. I dedicated myself to helping leaders of Not-For-Profit organizations to successfully and eloquently realize their visions. My faithful steed, Red, and I have travelled this journey together. But, in business and in horses, riding off into the sunset is more difficult than it looks. It is about living a culture of trust and respect, ongoing learning and sharing knowledge. One must practice humility, curiosity, and being a teacher and student at the same time.

HORSE SENSE

This past couple years, I witnessed the essence of leadership as a case judge for JDC West and other school based accounting and finance case competitions. I watched in wonder as these very talented students presented their creative recommendations to the business panel of judges. The judges readily shared their knowledge, saying they learned just as much as the students from this experience. Riding into the sunset at the end of the day like John Wayne will take a lifetime of practicing. In 2016, Red and I are looking forward to learning cowboy mounted shooting. Step by step we will learn how to neck rein at a lope through a pattern of inflated balloons shooting them out as we go. To my friends, family and associates, I wish you the best in 2016 and that together we will find our sunset. “Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learnt something from yesterday.” – John Wayne’s Headstone Inscription lrjohns@accesscomm.ca http://lrjcpa.ca

Prairie

Child It’s been five years

since we had a family photo and five years since we’ve all been together as a family. Our family has changed, now to include a son-in-law, a baby, and three new dogs. The theme for this 1/2 decade’s family photo was the tea party concept, inspired by a little Alice in Wonderland, Johnny Depp style, and the tea sets that belonged to four generations of mothers in my family. Our family hails from the prairie. I grew up with a farm as a child, even though I lived in the city, but I thought that every child had a farm. Each summer and holiday we would visit my grandparents at the farm. The farm was a magical place for me. There was a long road that travelled off the main gravel road to our white farmhouse. It was there that every Easter, I would try to catch the Easter bunny hopping down the road. We had cows, pigs, chickens, and even horses for a brief time. My grandmother taught us how to take eggs from the chickens without getting pecked, and how to feed the pigs. Sometimes we would play pirate on an old wooden hay wagon that sat in the yard. Other times, we would play with my grandmother’s collection of buttons, making artistic creations, or we would read comics that she collected for us. Sometimes we would bake cinnamon buns, and steal the brown sugar mixture when my grandmother wasn’t looking. At night, we would sleep under feather quilts. Each day was a treasured memory. Sadly there was a fire on our farm, and that life quickly and tragically came to an end. We lost our grandmother soon after. We have never quite recovered as a family. I still think of her, and I can still hear her laughter. My “city grandmother”, Anne, was a rancher, politician, mother, wife, hairstylist, writer, artist, and a general force to be reckoned with. She was fashionable always; I cannot remember a day when she was not meticulously composed. That’s just who she was. We were fortunate to have her with us until the age of 89, when she lost her battle with cancer. On the day of the shoot, we gathered all of our my grandmothers’ and mother’s china table wear, and a linen table cloth from my mother. Our family travelled out to photographer Jackie Hall’s farm property. My youngest daughter Sara and I set up the table and prepared for the shoot. As my daughter Caitlyn, Ron and two-year-old Ronan arrived, the table was set and we were ready. As I was photographing the table and the set up, Ronan came running across the farmyard, to the table, and I captured him in full run. Seeing him reminded me of the freedom that I loved as a child on the farm and the open sky. At that moment, I was so grateful for my memories, for my family, and to have this legacy of the prairie child. Our family photo shoot is dedicated to the memory of my grandparents Kate and Mike Dribnenky, and the memory of our farm, and my grandmother Anne Larson who always brought the sparkle.
