Karen Battles and her husband, James Shanley, brought a line of exquisite letterpress stationery to the market in 1995. The simple, understated designs were all printed on vintage letterpress equipment. Unlike today, when they went to trade shows to promote their line, they found that much of their time was spent educating buyers about modern letterpress printing. B Designs was shuttered in 2013, After a number of customer requests, we decided to bring back some of Karen’s designs. We welcome Karen to the Big Wheel Press family. We are happy to introduce her designs to a new card writing generation.

USE A FORK
TO PUSH THE MEAT OUT OF THE BODY
UNHINGE THE BACK
OPEN THE BODY
12 oz lobster meat, cooked & diced 2 tablespoons diced celery 2 tablespoons diced dill pickle 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice Half cup mayonnaise Salt, pepper and Old Bay
Mix the lobster, celery, pickle, and lemon juice. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and Old Bay. Keep chilled until ready to use. Brush butter on each side of bun and griddle until golden brown.
4 New England style hotdog buns 4 tablespoons soft butter
Fill the buns with the lobster mix. Serve immediately!

We use only eco-friendly papers that we source from the finest paper mills in the USA and Europe. Most cards are A2 (4.25 x 5.5 inches). Our ornament cards are A6 (4.5 x 6.25 inches) and our pop-out cards are 9.5” x 4.125”.
Orders are shipped from our studio in Easthampton, Massachusetts. Domestic orders will ship via USPS Priority Mail or UPS Ground, depending on the size and weight of the package. International orders will ship by arrangement. If you would prefer to use your own FedEx or UPS account number, please let us know. Shipping costs are charged at the time of shipment.
I grew up in Los Angeles, right next to Venice Beach. Pretty much all my free time was either in my garage messing around on anything with wheels or riding those wheels to the beach. Life changed when the bike path was built connecting all the beach towns. We rode all the way to Long Beach and up to Malibu on our bikes. Hence, the view of Hermosa Beach. I’m in the lower right hand corner.

Our Story Big Wheel Press was founded in a basement in Northampton, Massachusetts in 2008. My first introduction to the world of hand printing was in 1964 when my mom and dad bought me a table top printing press. I immediately started publishing the family newspaper and made greeting cards for every occasion. In later years I worked for a weekly newspaper and finally opened a design studio. Way before the days of Macs, laptops and desktop publishing. People often ask where we got the name for the press...Big Wheel plastic tricycles of course! I have always loved these little bikes with their big front wheels and the power they transmit to their little drivers. When our first press arrived at the studio we had to disassemble it and take it in through a narrow doorway piece by piece. The last piece we brought in was the big iron flywheel. A truely big wheel.
Today you will find my five year old and two year old sons racing after each other around the studio on their big wheel tricycles. The inspiration from our cards comes from the heart and personal experiences of our designers. Every card has a story behind it. I believe that the more heart felt the story, the better the card. We have cards featuring onesies that are inspired by the youngest members of the team. The design for my Louie Award winning “Screw Cancer” card was adapted from a broadside I printed for my sister to hang on her hospital room wall when she was battling breast cancer.

Sizes and Paper
If you were to visit Big Wheel Press, and all are welcome, at first glance it looks like a printing museum. When we first started out we had a Chandler & Price Pilot and a #14 Golding Pearl treadle press. Thousands of cards, invitations and coasters were printed on these two loyal machines. Then we added a Vandercook SP-20 proof press and when that broke down in the middle of a huge commission we added another Vandercook. At this point we became the Noah’s Ark of printing equipment, never again would we be caught without a back-up. Every press has a sister press and we stock or source all the parts necessary to keep these babies rolling.
