Charles White (1918–1979) depicted the lives of black Americans for over four decades. Born in Chicago, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later at the Art Students League of New York. Raised in poverty and exposed to the works of other black artists and authors, he embraced using his art as commentary on social injustice. Along with portrayals of important figures in black history, he created a series of “wanted” posters based on Civil War posters of runaway slaves. Skilled in drawing, painting, and printmaking, White left a legacy of authentic artworks capturing the spirit of a people.

His depictions of colorful confections made him famous, but Wayne Thiebaud (American, b. 1920) has also applied his formidable talents to a range of other subjects. His “aerial” landscapes are highly realistic yet approach abstraction. His farmlands and cityscapes, which often feature exaggerated hills and multiple or distorted perspectives, can affect the viewer like a roller-coaster ride—while forming the elegant compositions that make the artist’s work unique. This calendar presents a sampling of Thiebaud’s work spanning nearly five decades.

Edward Hopper (American, 1882–1967) is often called one of the twentieth century’s greatest realists. His outdoor scenes convey atmosphere in all its incarnations, from early morning light and shadows, to the hot bright white of a summer day, to the fading warmth of sunset. He once said, “I am very much interested in light, and particularly sunlight, trying to paint sunlight without eliminating the form under it, if I can.” Hopper spent most of his career in New York and New England, amassing a body of work that includes somber interiors as well as moody seascapes and shadow-filled street scenes.

Eric Wert (American, b. 1976) is known for visually intense, sensually charged still lifes that are anything but still. His larger-than-life oil paintings nearly vibrate with saturated color and decadent detail. Influenced by Dutch still life painters, he uses jewel tones to depict sumptuous subject matter, taking traditional compositions in new directions. More than one hundred of Wert’s artworks can be found in the book Eric Wert: Still Life (Pomegranate, 2018).

Rebecca Campbell: The Enchanted Garden T515 ISBN 978-0-7649-8408-2 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.

Step into the garden with British artist Rebecca Campbell, and you’ll meet a variety of creatures not normally found in the English countryside. The fox tempts the hounds, of course, but the elephants, zebras, and other jungle denizens seem to be having a parade of their own making. Campbell frequently paints works focusing on animals, and she’s likely to blend cultures that reflect her global travels: Indian miniatures, chinoiserie, and medieval tapestries to name a few.

Rosalind Wise T474 ISBN 978-0-7649-8407-5 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.

“My mission is to capture time,” says British artist Rosalind Wise. “Through painting I feel I can make the moment stand still, to make its beauty last.” She achieves this goal by creating fresh, lively, large-format paintings of gardens, meadows, wetlands, and other natural vistas. Wise (b. 1949) often makes quick plein air sketches during her morning walks, recording the relationships of plants growing together naturally. Later, in her home studio, she works from her studies, collected specimens, and photographs.

Since antiquity, herbs and medicinal plants (known as simples) have been studied, documented, and used to treat a host of human complaints—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Today, medieval medical tomes are appreciated as snapshots of history. The twelve illustrations reproduced in this calendar were selected from Le Livre des simples médecines (The Book of Simple Medicines), c. 1470. They are the work of French artist Robinet Testard (fl. 1470–1523) and were created for Louise of Savoy and her husband, Charles d’Angoulême.

Mark Rothko (American, b. Russia, 1903–1970), a titan among modern painters, said that the subject matter of his paintings was the extremes of human emotion. His extraordinary achievement was the communication of tragedy and elation through forms reduced to starkest simplicity—oftentimes a pair of rectangles. After a series of artistic metamorphoses, he established himself as a leader among New York’s artistic avant-garde in the late 1940s.

Mark Rothko, who was central to the development of postwar abstract painting in the United States, is best known for the luminous paintings he made in the 1950s and 1960s. These classic works are characterized by their soft-edged rectangular forms and broad, thin washes of color. Rothko worked on large canvases, but he felt that the scale was intimate, establishing a close physical relationship with the viewer. These images invite contemplation and spiritual communion.

T502 ISBN 978-0-7649-8396-2 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.

Valerie Fowler’s complex oil paintings convey a tangled reality. Her works portray a natural world of extreme vigor while also commenting on nature’s sensitive vulnerability. She relays concern and love for the earth, our fragile home, as she explores the mark we humans make on it. Fowler hopes to communicate themes examining the qualities of beauty in nature, and also our common mortality.

MF Cardamone approaches her work with the eye of a nineteenth-century botanical illustrator and the soul of a contemporary artist. She treats each piece like a puzzle, juxtaposing the manmade with the natural. Cardamone (American, b. 1958) links regional icons and social commentary with scientific information about specific plants, then embellishes the whole with calligraphy. This calendar reproduces twelve of her mixed-media artworks, with insights and observations by the artist. Pomegranate also publishes the book Botanical Visions: The Art of MF Cardamone.

Daniel Merriam’s surreal artworks combine a romantic Victorian sensibility with a dreamlike imagination. A self-taught artist, Merriam (American, b. 1963) studied mechanical and architectural design and began a career as an architectural illustrator. He later turned to fine art and built his skills and portfolio with fantasyfueled drawings and paintings, including one titled Bubble Street. In 2012 he opened Bubble Street Gallery—an emporium celebrating creativity and the imagination in Sausalito, California—where he and other steampunk-infused artists showcase their work.

Deborah Phillips (Scottish, b. 1965) paints the wild energy of the Scottish landscape. She followed the lead of her father, artist Douglas Phillips, and by the age of fourteen had exhibited her work at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art. She paints contemporary landscapes in acrylics, taking familiar locales and turning them into scenes of wonder.

Fine Art WOLF KAHN Wolf Kahn (American, b. Germany 1927) uses the seen world as a point of departure, a starting place for his investigations into the push and power of color. The synthesis of realism and the formal discipline of color field painting are embodied in Kahn’s paintings. Paradoxically, given that he works in nearly violent colors, his paintings are wonderfully tranquil. Exercises in chromatic tension and formal movement, they are also sharply evocative of real-world hillsides and weathered buildings. Kahn has received Fulbright and Guggenheim fellowships, and his works are in many collections, including those of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.

In the landscapes of Wolf Kahn, vivid and improbable yet harmonic colors awaken sensory delights—the sunlit glow of a florid meadow, a rustling of leaves in the breeze, the cool calm within a stand of birch trees. Influenced by such greats as Claude Monet and J. M. W. Turner, Kahn was at the center of a 1950s movement toward the fusion of abstract and representational art.

Gardens of the Impressionists

T499 ISBN 978-0-7649-8380-1 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.

The late work of Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) represents a time of artistic focus on the gardens he created at his home in Giverny, France. Flowers, not figures, were Monet’s primary subjects during this final stage of his long career. His Japanese-inspired water garden, with its ever-changing scenery of water lilies, irises, willows, and wisteria, garnered his attention almost exclusively, culminating in the series of water-lily paintings that blurred the line between representation and abstraction. The images in this calendar and the corresponding exhibition, Monet: The Late Years, “redefined the old master of Impressionism as a forebear of modernism.”

The impressionists found their greatest inspiration in the natural world, often in gardens and other cultivated areas—sun-dappled flowers on the waterfront, orchards coming into bloom, tree-lined walks, and other pastoral scenes. Many impressionist painters— most notably Monet—were also avid gardeners, and the plots they tended became an important source of imagery. Animated, unruly, and only provisionally domesticated, the garden was perfectly suited to the impressionists’ joyous approach to painting. Included here are works by Degas, Gauguin, Manet, Monet, Pisarro, Renoir, and Van Gogh.

Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) worked tirelessly to depict fleeting moments and sensations on canvas. His interest in how we perceive nature is ever present in his paintings, which reject rigid rules of subject matter, composition, and color. Monet helped lay the foundation for impressionism, one of the most influential art movements in recent centuries.

T639 ISBN 978-0-7649-8423-5 $7.99 US ($9.99 Canada) Mini wall calendar 61/2 x 7 in.; opens to 61/2 x 14 in.

Born in Paris near the end of the nineteenth century, impressionism set aside the strict techniques and conservative themes preferred by the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Instead, the artists in this avant-garde movement embraced the use of unbridled colors and brushstrokes, the intimacy and subtlety of domestic moments, and subjects bathed in natural light. Here are twelve paintings by Mary Cassatt, Vincent van Gogh, Berthe Morisot, Édouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas.

Vincent van Gogh’s artwork in his last few years, a notoriously conflicted period punctuated by hospital stays and spent mostly in the south of France, reflects his ability for observation. And whether the subject was a vase of flowers, a field of billowing grasses, or an orchard in peak bloom, his paintings consistently display their trademark vibrancy. Each month of this calendar pairs a Van Gogh painting with a selection from his letters.

Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890) once wrote, “He that sincerely loves nature, finds pleasure everywhere.” His letters, often to his brother and benefactor, Theo, trace the ebb and flow of his happiness and art’s role in it, on which he mused regularly. Each artwork reproduced in this calendar is paired with a passage from Van Gogh’s letters.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841–1919) broke from impressionism in 1878, its heyday, turning his focus to portraits for avant-garde patrons and their children. The ensuing works are charmingly familiar but built on formal principles of composition that have given his paintings distinct longevity. Renoir’s art grew to take influence from the Italian renaissance and French genre painting, and he was known to paint landscapes, still lifes, and bathing groups, though portraiture continued to dominate his output. Twelve of his portraits are reproduced in this calendar.

Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) was an American among the French, a woman among the men. Cassatt’s paintings are refreshing products of the female gaze, her women in command of their space and bodies, unguarded in a way that her male counterparts couldn’t manage to portray. And mother and child are always a unified presence. This idealized domesticity earned Cassatt the distinction of painting the “modern Madonna,” and she turned her paintings into a genre.

Fine Art THE READING WOMAN The reading woman has been a popular subject for painters through the ages. Beyond being beautiful, she is, in herself, an expression of important, unspoken cultural ideas. She is ensconced in comfortable surroundings; she is at leisure. And that she is using her leisure to read indicates that she is educated—no small feat in centuries past. The reading woman is a confirmation and a celebration of quiet comfort and hard-earned social stability. She turns to books for entertainment, insight, and revelation, and relies on periodicals to bring news of matters large and small. Just as the reading woman sets free her imagination and becomes absorbed in the written words before her, so can we briefly enter the world depicted in the painting and take part in its narrative.

Images of reading women offer stories in and of themselves. What might we read could we peek over the shoulders of the readers depicted in this calendar? And what would we learn of the women themselves? These paintings by eighteenth- to twentieth-century artists invite your imagination to fill in the details of the reading woman’s experience. Each image in this calendar is accompanied by a brief quotation on the subject of books and reading.

Mabel Royds (English, 1874–1941) studied Japanese printmaking processes and learned to create the images, carve the woodblocks, and produce the prints herself. Her bold woodcut technique and vibrant colors give her work an almost abstract quality, unlike that of other printmakers of the time. Royds enjoyed depicting the simple yet beautiful things around her, including flowers at their prime and in their dying days. From 1933 to 1938, she made a series of flower prints, twelve of which are reproduced in this calendar.

Kate Krasin (American, 1943–2010) was a master of the silkscreen print, for which she might use as many as forty successive screens, all cut by hand, to create a detailed, textured work of art. She formulated transparent inks and layered colors, creating an ethereal beauty uncommon for silkscreen. Drawn to the land and mindful of civilizations past, Krasin focused on the landscape and sense of mystery of her native New Mexico. More than sixty of the artist’s works can be seen in Kate Krasin: Luminous Prints (Pomegranate, 2016).

William Seltzer Rice (American, 1873–1963) sketched and painted the flora and fauna of California and the West. He favored block printing as a means of bringing his original art within reach of many people. Each color print required several blocks, all of which he designed, carved, and printed himself. T534 ISBN 978-0-7649-8445-7 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.

In widely varied artistic styles, the works in this calendar survey key moments in African American art, from a pre–Civil War still life lacking any hint to the artist’s identity to the powerful expressions of African American life in the 1920s’ Harlem Renaissance and beyond. Though some artists worked outside this arc—either self-taught or decidedly apart—new narrative works affirmed the role of African American art as valuable commentary, a cornerstone of resistance, and a celebration of black heritage.

Between 1916 and 1963, Norman Rockwell (American, 1894–1978) created a sunny, gentle, almost carefree version of America on 323 covers of The Saturday Evening Post. Inside the magazine were many stories he illustrated and many advertisements he drew. The kindly one-town nation he celebrated was internalized by The Post’s readers, who saw Rockwell’s pictures and reacted with, “That’s us!” Immensely popular in his own time and beyond, Rockwell long ago attained the status of an icon.

Thomas Cole (1801–1848) revered the American landscape, and in 1825 his depictions of New York’s Catskill wilderness launched the nation’s first native art movement. The Hudson River Valley school arose during a period of exploration and a growing desire to preserve areas of unspoiled beauty. Artists such as Cole and his former student Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900) paid homage to the play of light on sky, water, and land as they infused their work with the sense of humankind’s smallness in the face of natural grandeur.

The wide open spaces and desert landscapes of the American Southwest appear here in artwork that spans more than one hundred years, from artists such as Thomas Moran, Henry Cheever Pratt, Victor Higgins, and Maynard Dixon. These works reflect the ever-present sun and sense of history that pervades the region. Native culture and architecture also play a role in the artistic vision of the land.

Every cat lover has a repertoire of more or less amusing anecdotes about their little four-legged family member. That may be because cats pay their rent by performing acts of comic mayhem, amazing grace, and breathtaking self-regard. Cats seem to take themselves very seriously, and the artists whose works are gathered here have taken them seriously as well. These images go beyond deft and faithful representation: they are works of art that speak to their creators’ sensibilities, surroundings, and times.

Wildlife artist Jeremy Paul creates realistic works influenced by his background as a marine biologist. Self-taught, he began painting in earnest after spending a year in the early 1980s on a barely inhabited island off the coast of Skye, in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. The place was abundant with wildlife, inspiring what eventually became a new career. In the years since, Paul (English, b. 1954) has traveled extensively in search of artistic subjects. He paints everything from the smallest backyard birds to the world’s most imposing land mammals.

Fine Art GEORGIA O’KEEFFE Born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Georgia O’Keeffe carried the prairie’s simplicity and strength with her as she strove to convey the essence of her subjects’ spirit and form. Over the course of a dozen years spent chiefly in New York, where the impresario, photographer, and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz championed O’Keeffe, her paintings awed critics and public audiences. O’Keeffe (1887–1986) first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned there throughout the 1930s. In 1949 she made her home in New Mexico. There she refined the directness of vision that reveals itself so powerfully in her art. Bursting with brazen color and blazing light, O’Keeffe’s sensually charged flowers and bold landscapes speak evocatively of the thoughtful delight she took in the physical world.

Georgia O’Keeffe created images that invited viewers to see the familiar in a new way, often enlarging the delicate structure of a flower to fill an entire canvas or distilling a vast desert landscape into a few details. At her home in New Mexico, where the high desert’s rich palette and undulating topography proved constantly inspiring, she continued painting until a few weeks before her death, in 1986. The twelve oil paintings reproduced in this calendar reveal the many nuances of the artist’s talent and her unforgettable style.

Author and artist William Blake (British, 1757–1827) was an original thinker and an artistic innovator. He invented relief etching (which he called illuminated printing), a process that allowed the integration and hand-coloring of text and illustration within the same printed image. Using this new printing technique he self-published illuminated books of his poetry and art. Blake’s work continues to engage scholars and laypeople alike.

Love, revenge, humor, madness, mistaken identity—the timeless themes of Shakespeare’s plays continue to engage audiences more than four hundred years after they were first performed. William Shakespeare (English, 1564–1616) wrote nearly forty comedies, tragedies, histories, and romances. The paintings and prints featured in this calendar portray some of his best-known and loved characters. Each month presents tidbits of Shakespearean lore to accompany the opulent artworks, which are in the collection of the Folger Shakespeare Library.

A leading member of the Austrian Art Nouveau movement known as the Vienna Secession, Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862–1918) produced works of startling power, symbolism, and eroticism. Portraits of women from Vienna’s social elite would come to dominate his career, but Klimt also produced daring landscapes reflecting the influences of Van Gogh and Japonisme, albeit in his undeniably unique style.

In a cottage named Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn, Sweden, Carl Larsson (Swedish, 1853–1919) delighted in chronicling the comfortable country life he shared with his wife, painter Karin Bergöö, and their eight children. The light-infused watercolors included in this calendar depict his family’s lively, colorful, creative household.

Fine Art CHARLEY HARPER Charley Harper (American, 1922–2007) had a keen eye for simplifying nature’s complexities while preserving the essence of the wildlife he depicted. With lively lines and expressive depictions of motion, his works reveal a deep awareness of animal behavior, particularly that of birds. His sophisticated yet playful portrayals often include visual puns, and his wit is reflected in the titles he gave his artworks. Of Wingding, in which a ruffled grouse wing-beats a possum’s log hideaway, he remarked, “The possum lives downstairs from a drummer.” PomegranateKids publishes Charley Harper board books for the littlest enthusiast: Animal Alphabet, Book of Colors, Count the Birds, and I Am Wild. After studying at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the Art Students League of New York City, he gained acclaim as a commercial illustrator, most notably for The Golden Book of Biology and Animal Kingdom, children’s books published in the 1960s. Describing his minimalist method of depicting wildlife, Harper once said, “I regard the picture as an ecosystem in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced.”

Popular during the latter part of Japan’s Edo period, decorative papers were put to fashionable use in handcrafting household accessories, paper dolls, origami boxes, gift wrap, and stationery. The papers, known as chiyo-gami, were often based on the kimono patterns of fabric designers in Kyoto’s Yuzen textile district. Inspired by literature, theater, and cultural themes, designers produced countless patterns ranging from lush florals to symbolic or geometric abstracts. Japanese decorative designs reflect a reverence for nature and admiration of beauty.

Throughout many centuries in Japan, exquisitely painted scrolls and screens have been revered art forms. Japanese artists used ink, colors, and gold leaf on silk or paper to create portraits and scenes of the natural world as well as those of literature, mythology, and sacred writings. These works of art are expressions of personal taste as well as symbols of wealth and power.

Tibet exists on “the roof of the world,” its high altitude and geographic isolation setting it apart from its continental neighbors, though not beyond their cultural and religious influence. Buddhist traditions, introduced to Tibet in the seventh century, profoundly affected Tibetan art. The beauty and complex iconography of Tibetan thangkas—meditational paintings made of mineral pigments on cloth—encouraged the devoted along their path to spiritual enlightenment. The thangkas in this calendar span some six hundred years, beginning in the early twelfth century.

Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797–1858) was one of the last great masters of Edo period ukiyo-e painting and polychrome printmaking. He created some of his most memorable and influential works during the 1850s, the final decade of his life. Hiroshige’s works honor the past and the present while evoking the human experience of the natural world—from Mt. Fuji’s permanence to the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms in temple gardens.

The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson shared a passion for Canada’s wilderness and a strong desire to create a distinctive visual language, inspired first and foremost by the Canadian landscape. Their goal was to explore the country and paint it. In so doing, they captured the imagery that would imprint itself on the Canadian consciousness. Through their spectacular paintings and adventurous spirit, these celebrated artists have shaped Canadian art and identity.

In 1920, a small community of Canadian artists officially became the Group of Seven. As the group extended its membership and influence, a national art bloomed, reflecting in stunning images the beauty and grandeur of the Canadian landscape.

Darlene Kulig’s vivid, stylized paintings of Canada build on her twenty years’ experience as a graphic designer. “The designer in me loves simple shape and bold color while the painter in me explores light, rhythm, and personal connection,” she says. She takes hundreds of photographs when she travels and uses them as a basis for authentic details in her work.

As Lawren S. Harris (Canadian, 1885–1970) traveled north, he developed an increasingly stylized approach to lakes, trees, skies and mountains. The twelve paintings reproduced in this calendar include his iconic landscapes and early works depicting town life.

Kenojuak Ashevak (1927–2013) was a pioneer of modern Inuit art. After establishing her reputation in 1960 with The Enchanted Owl—an image so popular it was reproduced on a Canadian postage stamp—she worked nearly nonstop. She contributed to Cape Dorset’s print collection almost every year and completed countless special commissions. Ashevak loved to make pictures of birds, particularly owls. Reflecting on her art, she said, “I am the light of happiness, and I am a dancing owl.”

About 1,200 miles north of Toronto, Baffin Island is home to a community of artists who work in the printmaking studios of Cape Dorset. In continual opera‑ tion since 1959, the studios produce striking, highly decorative works of art. With the invention of tows and lifts in the 1930s, alpine skiing was no longer a sport for only the intrepid and determined. Skiing grew as a holiday activity for the elite, and what followed has been called the golden age of skiing. Meanwhile, tourism agencies, railroads, and resorts commissioned posters advertising the thrill of the downhill and the luxuries of the lodge. The posters included here showcase dramatic vistas or charming vignettes alongside hand-drawn typography.

When work began on the US Interstate Highway System in 1956, it spelled the end of an era for the country’s passenger railroads. But during the first half of the twentieth century, trains were the mainstay of American long-distance travel. This calendar celebrates the glory days of US rail travel with reproductions of a dozen posters tempting travelers to routes all across the country. All aboard!

Hard pressed by competition from buses and automobiles, yet determined to increase business, British railways hired top-notch illustrators to design posters advertising train travel to historic castles and rural settings, bustling cities and seaside resorts. Slogans on the posters in this calendar encouraged riders to holiday in the Lake District, “Live in Kent and Be Content,” and above all to “See Britain by Train.”

While travel posters from the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways often featured locomotives speeding down their tracks, they just as often advertised Canada itself. Twelve splendid images of the nation’s waterways, wild vistas, and summer and winter recreational opportunities are represented within this calendar.

At the end of the nineteenth century, artist and professor Anton Seder was appointed founding director of Strasbourg’s College of Decorative Arts. Seder (German, 1850–1916) developed the school, which helped bridge French and German artistic styles and contributed to the development of Art Nouveau. Among Seder’s work from this time is the two-volume Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe (The plant in art and trade), a visual tour of plants from around the world, and the source of the intricate designs in this calendar.

E. A. Séguy (1877–1951) was one of the leading French pattern designers of the first three decades of the twentieth century. He combined art deco and art nouveau styles using striking color combinations and bold geometric decoration. The twelve artworks in this calendar are from Séguy’s 1924 portfolio Papillons (Butterflies), created with the pochoir technique, an expensive, labor-intensive printing process that uses stencils to create clean lines and a wet appearance.

More of Marley’s exquisite creatures are featured in the book Pheromone (Pomegranate, 2008).

T491 ISBN 978-0-7649-8418-1 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.

New-York Historical Society

In his early twenties Louis John Rhead (1857–1926) emigrated to America, where he found success as a graphic artist working primarily in the Art Nouveau style. A graceful counterstatement to stiff Victorian-era graphic arts, Art Nouveau transformed the art of the poster and was used to sell everything from soaps to perfumes, magazines to books. Twelve of Rhead’s illustrations complete this calendar.

T504 ISBN 978-0-7649-8411-2 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.

Louis Comfort Tiffany revolutionized the stained glass industry with his manufacture of opalescent glass. Having produced windows and blown glass for two decades, near the turn of the century his studios began crafting the now famous lamps that made Tiffany a household name. Designers such as Clara Driscoll—who won a bronze medal at the Paris World’s Fair of 1900 for one of her shade designs—often interpreted Tiffany’s aesthetics and his desire to illuminate nature. Several designs attributed to her are included in this calendar.

From 1895 to 1900 Alphonse Mucha (Czech, 1860–1939) established himself as the master of the art nouveau poster through series focusing on nature—the seasons, flowers, gems, the arts—all with harmonious colors, decorative elements, and beautiful women in diaphanous gowns. Several of the images in this calendar are from those series, designed to elevate and inspire the viewer.

Alphonse Mucha became an overnight sensation in 1894 when he designed a poster for a play starring Sarah Bernhardt. His groundbreaking style launched Art Nouveau, yet he denied any connection to the Art Nouveau movement. Mucha worked prolifically in his self-invented genre, twelve examples of which are featured here.

Antique Quilts T496 ISBN 978-0-7649-8373-3 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.

No longer simply bed coverings to keep people warm, quilts made in nineteenth-century America were often works of art. Improvements in the economy and advances in textile manufacturing allowed women of means to purchase fabrics in colors and patterns of their choosing to express their creativity. Patterns were handed down through families and religious communities, or were created for special occasions such as weddings. Medallion styles feature a central image; log cabin patterns are made from narrow strips of fabric pieced around a square; and crazy quilts have the appearance of random piecework in silk, satin, and velvet, with plenty of embellishments embroidered or painted on top. The quilts in this calendar are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The Arts and Crafts movement of late nineteenth-century Britain spurred a renaissance in the applied and decorative arts in the United States. Drawing inspiration from nature, American artisans set out to produce objects of utility and beauty at affordable prices. At the forefront of this movement was the ceramics industry. Inspired by the glazes and designs of that era, Motawi Tileworks has carried on the Arts and Crafts tradition since 1992.

Ill-fated children with baleful faces; anthropomorphic creatures of untraceable biological lineage; shadowy, haunted adults, forever on the verge of mysterious errands: these are but a few of the irresistible characters who populate Gorey’s world. His drawings and stories have a special genius that resides in the effect of what is left unseen and unwritten. Pomegranate is the publisher of more than two dozen books by and about Gorey, as well as unique gift items celebrating his signature style.

He said, “By the time I had illustrated The Golden Book of Biology and The Animal Kingdom . . . During a 65-year career, iconic choreographer Paul Taylor (1930–2018) created 147 dances that blend everyday gesture with formalized movement. As a pioneering radical in a quintessentially American art form he helped to shape, Taylor reimagined the way dance can illuminate the human condition and spark the human spirit. To leading dance photographer Paul B. Goode, “What Paul Taylor’s dancers do on stage often appears impossible. Without question they are fearless.” The dynamic images represented here are among Goode’s favorites, selected from his more than 15 years of photographing the company’s modern dance rehearsals and performances.

An award-winning documentary filmmaker and photographer, Friedman has exhibited in the United States and internationally. Her photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Oakland Museum of California; and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. She taught for thirty years in the Art Department of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

It’s easy to fall for sea otters—look at those curious faces and that expertly coiffed fluff. Like us, they cradle young ones on their chests and use tools to whack open their favorite shellfish. But they are born in the water and spend most of their time there. Once nearly extinct because of fur trading—their luxurious fur is made of up to one million hairs per square inch—sea otters can today be found in coastal waters from California to Japan, where their presence has proven vital to a healthy ecosystem.

Photography MONET’S PASSION Fascinated by color, light, and atmosphere, impressionist Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) found expression for these elements in his canvases and his gardens. He spent decades creating a tapestry of hues and textures in the flowers and foliage that surrounded his Giverny home, a living laboratory for the artist to study the everchanging natural world. Photographer and horticultural designer Elizabeth Murray fell in love with Monet’s gardens on her first visit to the Giverny estate in 1984. She volunteered during its restoration and returns regularly to record the gardens’ daily and seasonal transformations.

Seeking a place to indulge his twin passions of painting and gardening, master impressionist Claude Monet moved to the small Normandy village of Giverny in 1883. Finding a house on a verdant plot of land, he began transforming its grounds into a painter’s paradise, planting gardens of infinitely variable color and form. The project occupied the rest of his life and resulted in some of his most famous paintings. After Monet’s death, the gardens were neglected until the 1980s, when an effort aided by photographer and horticultural designer Elizabeth Murray restored their former grandeur. Overflowing with blooms, this calendar showcases twelve of Murray’s photographs.

Ecological Calendars THE OFFICIAL CALENDAR OF MOTHER NATURE Chris Hardman’s revolutionary ECOlogical Calendars mark time by the seasonal changes in life on Earth—from winter snows to spring flowers, from summer sun to autumn leaves. Designed for use in the Northern Hemisphere, foldout panels for each season track the visible stars, the phases of the moon and tides, the ratios of darkness and light, the seasonal behavior of Earth’s creatures, and a host of other details about the natural world. Familiar Gregorian days, dates, weeks, and months are noted. The engagement calendar includes international holidays and a world time-zone map. Now in their sixteenth editions, the ECOlogical Calendars will transform your concept of time.

The resulting works are filled with both gritty realities and placid moments, sometimes highlighting symbiotic relationships among vastly different species. The Hubble Space Telescope, named after Edwin Powell Hubble (1889– 1953), a pioneer of modern astronomy, has captured awe-inspiring images of nearby galaxies and deep space since 1990. From its orbit above Earth, the telescope has probed the cosmos, peering deep into time and allowing greater understanding of what lies beyond our atmosphere. Each of this calendar’s images is accompanied by a description of the celestial phenomenon depicted. Important dates in the history of space exploration, as well as the year’s eclipses and major meteor showers, are noted.

History

Votes for Women! Celebrating 100 Years Library of Congress T430 ISBN 978-0-7649-8438-9 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.

The campaign for women’s right to vote spanned more than seventy years, reaching its peak in the decade before the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was made law in 1920. Part of an international movement, American suffragists were inspired by the tactics used by their British counterparts, but in both countries, activists faced strong opposition. Suffrage organizations published their own posters and periodicals to counter the magazine covers and other imagery—including sheet music covers—published by those opposed to women’s suffrage. The twelve British and American artworks in this calendar are drawn from the collections of the Library of Congress, the world’s largest library.

Library of Congress

Honored here are the achievements of an outstanding group of black men and women, both celebrated and little known, who have made amazing inroads in their fields and significantly affected global culture. A brief biography accompanies the image of each figure, birthdays of other notable people are presented with the months, and milestones in black history mark the days of the year.

During the first centuries after the invention of the printing press, ambitious printers issued magnificent maps and atlases that documented European explorers’ first encounters with continents previously unknown to them. Each map is a rich cultural artifact, decorated with fanciful type, extravagant borders, and elaborate dedications. The twelve maps in this calendar were selected from the collections of the Library of Congress, which holds the largest cartographic collection in the world, numbering more than five million maps as well as thousands of atlases, globes, and other cartographical treasures.

Artist and teacher Paul Heussenstamm (American, b. 1949) incorporates principles of many religious traditions into his artwork. His signature motif is the mandala, which, for him, “opened the doorway into the symbolic language of the soul.” Typically circular and geometric in form, mandalas represent wholeness or unified energy and have played a role in Eastern spiritual development for centuries. Trees also figure prominently in Heussenstamm’s paintings. He explains that “the roots connect you with your ancestors, and the tree reaches up to connect heaven and earth.”

Inspired by her readings about shamanism and by her personal shamanic journeys, artist Susan Seddon Boulet (American, b. Brazil, 1941–1997) drew upon her spiritual visions to present, in exquisite detail, the creatures that inhabit the inner dimensions of the mind. Boulet’s paintings offer an artistic expression and understanding of shamanic practice—an exploration of the subconscious world. The paintings selected for this calendar are each paired with an excerpt from a Native American song, chant, poem, prayer, or narrative.

In ancient times, goddesses were revered throughout the world’s cultures for their creative and regenerative powers. Susan Seddon Boulet incorporated mythology, religion, and iconography to depict the many faces of the feminine divine. Each of this calendar’s twelve images is accompanied by informative text about the goddess depicted. Pomegranate also publishes Boulet’s work in the book Susan Seddon Boulet: A Retrospective.
