Every Hour of the Light: The Paintings of Mary Sipp Green U426 ISBN 978-0-7649-9925-3 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images Mary Sipp Green’s jewel-toned landscapes are an atmospheric convergence of light and color. The resulting sense of calm is felt immediately on viewing her paintings.

Himalayan Dreams: Nicholas Roerich

Gardens of the Impressionists

U419 ISBN 978-0-7649-9869-0 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images Nicholas Roerich’s Himalayan landscapes are grand in scope and color, yet contemplative and mindful of the role of humans. Roerich believed that beauty and knowledge were crucial ingredients of peace. He proposed an international treaty for preserving cultural treasures, and the Roerich Pact was signed by the nations of the Pan-American Union in 1935. The twelve magnificent paintings in this calendar convey the spiritual goals and sense of mission that guided Roerich’s life.

U464 ISBN 978-0-7649-9902-4 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images Animated, unruly, and only somewhat domesticated, gardens were a perfect subject for Impressionists and their joyous approach to painting. These artists found their greatest inspiration in the natural world: sparkling blue water, lush irises, roses in full bloom, and people wearing broad-brimmed hats under the sultry summer sun. Included here are works by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and others.

Berthe Morisot: Woman Impressionist

U467 ISBN 978-0-7649-9874-4 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in.  12 full-color images Spontaneous, rhythmic energy pulses from the drawings of Daria Hlazatova. Her works tap into a powerful feminine quality—somewhere between dreamy and earth-goddess punk. Swirling starscapes, broiling seas, piercing eyes, and lacy detail all surround a central figure. “My goal is for my work to evoke a feeling or memory,” says Hlazatova. Her intricate drawings elicit reverie.

National Gallery of Art U468 ISBN 978-0-7649-9879-9 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images If the French impressionists were vanguards, Berthe Morisot—the only woman among them—was revolutionary. As a founding member of the impressionists, Morisot was an essential figure in their movement, both financing it and painting some of its exceptional works. Her paintings are dignified and modest, and she was uncommon among impressionists for her treatment of women as primary subjects. Which makes sense: many of the women featured in these paintings are her sister, mother, daughter, or nieces.

Rosalind Wise

Rosalind Wise: Flowers

U417 ISBN 978-0-7649-9908-6 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images In lush paintings of gardens, meadows, and wetlands, British artist Rosalind Wise invites viewers into the natural vistas she knows and loves. Her works are large, typically four to five feet across, to communicate a sense of place. On behalf of the viewer, Wise strives to capture the energy and sensory detail of a moment in time. Having sketched a scene in the open air, she later focuses on color, texture, and form when completing the painting in her studio—but the out-of-doors light and air remain fresh on her canvas.

National Gallery of Art, Washington U400 ISBN 978-0-7649-9838-6 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images Mark Rothko, a titan among modern painters, said that the subject matter of his paintings was the extremes of human emotion. His extraordinary achievement was the communication of tragedy and elation through forms reduced to starkest simplicity—oftentimes a pair of rectangles. Rothko established himself as a leader among New York’s artistic avant-garde in the late 1940s, that moment when the devastation of a global war shunted creative impulses into radically new directions. His mesmerizing paintings are showcased here.

National Gallery of Art, Washington U619 ISBN 978-0-7649-9839-3 $7.99 ($9.99 Canada) Mini wall calendar 61/2 x 7 in.; open 61/2 x 14 in. 12 full-color images Mark Rothko is best known for the luminous paintings he made in the 1950s and 1960s. These classic works are characterized by their soft-edged rectangular forms and broad, thin washes of color. Rothko worked on large canvases, but he felt that the scale was intimate, establishing a close physical relationship with the viewer. His art invites contemplation and spiritual communion.

The paintings in this calendar were selected from each of his three major artistic evolutions: the early periods of Abstract Expressionism (1947–1955); the figurative/representational period (1955–1966); and the Ocean Park (1967– 1988) and Healdsburg (1988–1992) series of abstractions.

The California artist also paints dizzyingly steep cityscapes and gentle farmland scenes in his signature soft hues. Thiebaud’s thick-paint images are a joyride for the senses.

Diebenkorn’s evolution to maturity can be seen in the monograph Richard Diebenkorn: Beginnings, 1942–1955 (Pomegranate, 2017).

Ernst Haeckel: Art Forms in Nature

Wolf Kahn

Library of Congress U479 ISBN 978-0-7649-9859-1 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images A spectacular merging of art and science, Ernst Haeckel’s 1904 Kunstformen der Natur (or Art Forms in Nature) celebrates the beauty and evolution of life forms. Haeckel, a German biologist and an early supporter of Darwinism, was fascinated by everything from microscopic sea organisms to carnivorous plants to exotic reptiles. With this landmark study of flora and fauna—filled with fascinating and beautiful illustrations—he aimed to widen the general public’s understanding of naturalism.

U403 ISBN 978-0-7649-9826-3 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images Wolf Kahn’s landscapes glow like living jewels in brilliant, improbable color combinations. His genius for capturing the immediacy of nature’s hues has brought him to the forefront of the American colorist school. A stand of trees might be backed by vivid orange or bright magenta. Dusky purples and blues are intensified. Leaves shimmer chartreuse. Given that Kahn works in nearly violent colors, his paintings are wonderfully tranquil and evocative of real-world hillsides and weathered buildings. They’ll soothe you as powerfully as they’ll excite you.

New England scenes of gentle hills, slim tree trunks, and sheltering barns are bold statements in vibrant chartreuse, magenta, and orange. His paintings are not an exact record of nature, yet a palpable sense of place remains. With this small wall calendar, you can bask in his vision all day long, even with limited wall space.

U473 ISBN 978-0-7649-9878-2 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images Filled with swirling patterns in jewel tones and gold, Gustav Klimt’s exotic paintings of women epitomize the Austrian art nouveau movement known as the Vienna Secession. One of its cofounders, Klimt produced works of startling power, symbolism, and eroticism. Portraits of women from Vienna’s social elite would come to dominate his career, but he also produced daring landscapes. Included in this calendar’s twelve images are two designs for the Stoclet Frieze, perhaps the highlight of Klimt’s artistic output.

U428 ISBN 978-0-7649-9871-3 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images Claude Monet’s paintings reflect his obsession with the ever-changing play of color and light on water. His beloved lily pond in Giverny, France, was a favorite subject during his late years. In the open air, and using quick, broken brushstrokes, Monet captured his impressions of fleeting moments in time. There’s good reason why Monet is so revered today, almost one hundred years after his death: he was a master.

U408 ISBN 978-0-7649-9900-0 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in. 12 full-color images Shimmering with intense light and color, Van Gogh’s paintings rejected the naturalism of impressionism. Instead, he preferred bold, intense colors that conveyed emotion. He worked feverishly and created more than two thousand paintings, drawings, and sketches in his last ten years. Only one of these sold in his lifetime, but he was certain the world would one day appreciate his art. He was right. This calendar’s paintings survey the range of his work in landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and flower studies, and each is paired with a passage from the artist’s letters.

Monet’s place in the history of Western art is so monumental that each of his paintings could be deemed iconic.

FINE ART ▨ The Reading Woman The reading woman has been a popular subject for painters through the ages. Beyond being beautiful, she is, in herself, an expression of important, unspoken cultural ideas. She is ensconced in comfortable surroundings; she is at leisure. And that she is using her leisure to read indicates that she is educated—no small feat in centuries past. The reading woman is a confirmation and a celebration of quiet comfort and hard-earned social stability. She turns to books for entertainment, insight, and revelation, and relies on periodicals to bring news of matters large and small. Just as the reading woman sets free her imagination and becomes absorbed in the written words before her, so can we briefly enter the world depicted in these paintings and take part in their narrative. These calendars include works by masters such as Claude Monet, Édouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, PierreAuguste Renoir, and Louis Comfort Tiffany. Well-chosen words on the pleasures of reading, from historic and contemporary female writers and readers alike, accompany each of the images in each calendar.

The British Library U401 ISBN 978-0-7649-9875-1 $14.99 US ($18.99 Canada) Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; open 12 x 26 in.  12 full-color images Art and medicine meet in the classic botanical drawings of Elizabeth Blackwell. In her groundbreaking collection, published in the 1730s, Blackwell documented a global array of medicinal fruits and flowers used by London apothecaries. Her primary purpose: make enough money to get her husband out of prison. It worked (for better or worse). And while her husband found his way into more trouble, Blackwell became famous across Europe. Whether you’re a master botanist or budding gardener, or you simply love a good bouquet, these botanicals will fill your year with delightfully curious herbals.

Hopper’s sunlit paintings, featuring both rural and urban scenes, are presented in this calendar.

FINE ART ▨ Georgia O’Keeffe Born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Georgia O’Keeffe carried the prairie’s simplicity and strength with her as she strove to convey the essence of her subjects’ spirit and form. Over the course of a dozen years spent chiefly in New York, where impresario, photographer, and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz championed O’Keeffe, her paintings awed critics and public audiences. O’Keeffe (1887–1986) first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned there throughout the 1930s. In 1949 she made her home in New Mexico. There she refined the directness of vision that reveals itself so powerfully in her art. Bursting with brazen color and blazing light, O’Keeffe’s sensually charged flowers and bold landscapes speak evocatively of the thoughtful delight she took in the physical world.

With lively lines and expressive depictions of motion, his works reveal a deep awareness of animal behavior, particularly that of birds. His sophisticated yet playful portrayals often include visual puns, and his wit is reflected in the titles he gave his artworks. HUMOR ▨ Edward Gorey

Edward Gorey: The Evil Garden

Edward St. John Gorey (American, 1925–2000) was a brilliant artist, writer, and book designer. He created crosshatched characters and quirky narratives that established him as a master of the amusing, the strange, and the unexpected. These three Edward Gorey calendars feature some of his best-known works as well as some rarely published.

Pomegranate publishes a slew of Gorey books for children and adults, among them The Evil Garden, which is the basis for Escape from the Evil Garden: An Edward Gorey Board Game.

Cars and planes had usurped the appeal of rail travel by the 1950s, but the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways kept churning out posters. They were intent on drawing passengers not only to their trains, but to their hotels and steamship lines. While their posters often featured locomotives, they just as often advertised Canada itself—its wild vistas and its villages, as seen in the twelve posters reproduced here.

Each painting interprets an astrological sign in human form, with symbolic associations to the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Pavlova, an Australian artist also known as Annael, created these paintings to the accompaniment of classical music, and each is, in her words, a “synthesis of idea, music, and art.”

Artist Alexandra Eldridge sees divination through tarot cards as a mapping of an illustrative voyage through life, much as her artwork has always been a mapping of her soul’s journey. In her tarot series, the line between animal and human blurs, as a lion-headed creature rides the back of an elephant, and a stag wears the crown of the emperor. The twelve magical images in this calendar include a sampling of the major arcana and three aces of the tarot card deck.

PHOTOGRAPHY ▨ Monet’s Passion Fascinated by color, light, and atmosphere, impressionist Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) found expression for these elements in his canvases and his gardens. He spent decades creating a tapestry of hues and textures in the flowers and foliage that surrounded his Giverny home, a living laboratory for the artist to study the everchanging natural world. Monet’s splendid gardens abound with dazzling blossoms and graceful greenery, set off by the flash and dapple of his lily pond. Famous in their day but then seen by only a few, the gardens—like the gracious house they surround—were restored and opened to the public in 1980. Photographer and horticultural designer Elizabeth Murray fell in love with Monet’s gardens on her first visit to the Giverny estate in 1984. She volunteered during its restoration and returns regularly to record the gardens’ daily and seasonal transformations. Concise descriptions accompany all of the serene and inviting photographs in these three calendars. Pomegranate also publishes Elizabeth Murray’s book Monet’s Passion: Ideas, Inspiration, and Insights from the Painter’s Gardens (revised edition, 2010).
