My Flight Journal by Lynn Yoon

I’m flying to Nashville to spend Thanksgiving with my sister.

Flying often makes me sad.

Everything about the airport reminds me of my hometown, South Korea. Since 2005, the airport has become the saddest place for my family.

There, I had to say goodbye to everything–parents, friends, home, country, language, food, and a part of my identity. When I’m on board, I always look back on the past. I started this journey when I was a high school freshman.

On my way to Canada, I cried for more than ten hours. I could not stop my self from looking out the window, hoping to go back to Korea.

It has already been nine years now. It is getting better little by little. We are now used to having Thanksgiving together here in the U.S., apart from our parents.

My life continues from one airport to another airport.
