AROUND BOCA “GOOD VIBES” AND GREAT CLOTHES Casual Starfish Brand Is making An Impact Through Fashion By BEN FAGAN Staff Writer Going into its sixth year of existence, Casual Starfish now has an online store, frequents green markets and is being sold at Good Vibes Bungalow, a part of the coffee shop Good Vibes in Lantana. Casual Starfish is a little fish in the big pond that is the retail clothing industry. But, Dietrich and his brand’s followers know there is more to the company than just beach clothes and good vibes: Dietrich has set out on this journey hoping to truly change the environment for the better. Their products are American made and their designs are all original. The shirts are printed locally by two Florida print shops. The designs are printed on a polyester technical fabric, which is perfect for south Florida as it wicks away moisture and dries quickly. Casual Starfish campaigns mostly to women. “Moms, grandmas, wives do most of the buying for the men and boys in their lives,” said Dietrich. “So appealing to to them is the key.” After a few years of selling their products, Dietrich has found that they are most successful when selling in person. “People want to touch and feel, so when we sell at outdoor markets we are usually very busy. Our outdoor market gross sales per day is up to 50-75 percent over the last year.” With so many small clothing companies out there, Casual Starfish has to separate itself from the pack. They do that by embracing their small business role. They embrace what South Florida is all about as

well as stand for values greater than simple monetary gain. This attitude makes Casual Starfish important to the market and to the South Florida community. Before the culmination of Casual Starfish Brand, Dean Dietrich and his wife, Jeanette, would always struggle to find shirts for their children that would provide them with adequate sun protection while being in ocean waters. The solution came about as Dietrich, who works full time for Hammerhead pool cleaners, was producing shirts for the company to give away at trade shows. The shirts gained popularity and turned out to be just what he and his wife were looking for, bringing him to a seemingly obvious conclusion. “If we can’t find the stuff, why not make our own?” he asked, and in August 2011, the Casual Starfish brand was born. Dietrich is a native of the area, having been born in Fort Lauderdale and grown up in Pompano. He looks back on his childhood and always remembers being in or near water. The way he was raised is what helped formulate the idea for this brand. “It all came from me and my childhood and the kind of love for the environment and the ocean that my parents put in me,” Dietrich said. “Deep down, I would much rather make an impact than money,” he said. The company recently was approved for a nonprofit status; after the finalization of all paperwork, the proceeds generated through the business will be donated to a handful

of organizations. Those benefiting from the revenues will include the Coral Restoration Foundation and Share the Stoke, which works to collect old surfboards for donations in less fortunate coastal countries. Dietrich hopes to continue to add different organizations to this list so the brand’s helpful hand can further its reach. “We have made monetary contributions to Share the Stoke to help in their mission,” Dietrich said. Casual Starfish has just begun with Coral Restoration Foundation. They are donating a $255.00 metal print from the online store for a silent auction Coral Restoration Foundation will be having in April. With over 7 billion people in the world, it is easy to lose sight of the ability to make a positive impact. Dietrich understands that what Casual Starfish is doing is a step in the right direction. “We’re not changing the whole world,” Dietrich contends. “If we’re changing a little corner of it, I’m okay with that.” To learn more about Casual Starfish and how the organization is committed to its core values, interested readers can visit casualstarfish.com.

COVER TAKING A TRIP TO THE WILD FLORIDA KEYS WITH Th e Musi c al C o m e dy W ill B e P re f or m e d For T he First

By KAITLYN FRAME and CALVIN JORDAN Assistant Editor & Publishing Editor “Postcards from Paradise,” a full-length musical produced by the College of International Communication, premieres tonight at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage in the Wold Performing Arts Center. The show, written by Mickey James, Sharon Spivey James and Lynn Professor Emeritus David Fleisher, features music and lyrics with contributions from the late Shel Silverstein. This production of the musical is directed by Harry Murphy, professor in the drama program. “I am thrilled that our gifted and hardworking Lynn students will be introducing Postcards from Paradise to this area with the American premiere at the Wold Per for ming Arts Center,” said Fleisher. “I am also fortunate to have the talented and experienced hand of Harry Murphy directing all of the various elements that go into developing Postcards from Paradise for the stage.” In “Postcards,” the story follows a couple named Nancy and Jess who have decided to venture south to Key West in search of unique therapy meant to address the issues in their marriage. Though the topic seems

heavy at first mention, the show is a light-hearted comedy meant to make fun out of a trip to the Keys. “Postcards from Paradise is a creative and fun story of transfor mation and growth,” noted Paige Gilson, sophomore and actress in the role of Gator, a bartender at the Paradise Bar in which the story takes place. Through characters like lewd Gator, the charismatic waitress, Lisa, and the grandiose bar owner, Miguel, the show maintains its comedic value throughout the per for mance. The trio often makes quick quips and snarky asides regarding the therapeutic methods used by Rita, Miguel’s significant other and the psychologist providing the unusual service to Nancy and Jess. Regardless of the difficulty Rita encounters as a result of the interrupting group of three, the show makes a point of reconciling the

issues in a marriage. “The musical uses comedy to shed light on our inability to let our feelings go and just deal with our problems. Throughout the musical, the audience will see a couple transform as they talk out their problems in song, dance and—of course—through postcards,” added Gilson. Behind the scenes of the production is a cast of several Lynn students who are no strangers to

performing on stage. “This is possibly one of the best student casts I’ve ever had,” mentioned Murphy about his team of actors. “The amount of collaboration going into the show amazes me—it makes what I do very worthwhile.” Other students have assisted in the production of the show by creating choreography, arranging music and deciding on visual designs to be used on stage. All of the cast and most of the crew will be travelling to Ireland following the closing night show to spend a week in the country learning about the culture and delivering two additional per for mances in public Irish venues. “I’m so pumped about getting to go to Ireland with this cast because it’ll be my first time going to the country,” said Danielle Pascullo, freshman and crew member assisting with

choreography. “I’ve heard that they always have a good time when they go so I’m glad to be part of it this time.”

“THIS IS POSSIBLY ONE OF THE BEST STUDENT CASTS I’VE EVER HAD,” - Professor Harry Murphy In addition to tonight’s per formance, “Postcards” will run tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m.; the closing show will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Tickets are free for members of the Lynn community and $10 for general admission, but upon presentation of a postcard-style invitation, viewers can receive $3 off of general admission tickets. Torsten Rowell, a senior in the

role of Jess, is sure that audiences will find “Postcards” at least moderately entertaining. “The music in the show covers a broad span of genres, the scenes between the songs are pretty funny to watch and the whole show is focused around a trip to paradise, so I’m sure everyone who comes to watch will enjoy it.” Because the show is an original piece that has never hit the stage before, everyone from the cast and crew to the authors and songwriters are hoping it will entertain audiences both domestically as well as abroad. “I hope the audience leaves the theater feeling they would like to immediately pack and go to Key West,” continued Fleisher. “The tone of Postcards from Paradise is mostly light-hearted and fun, although there are certainly some serious moments and songs.”

LIFE AT LYNN HELPFUL TOOLS AT THE CLICK OF A BUTTON

The Lynn Library Provides A Variety Of Benefits To Students By LAURA GARRIDO Copy Support Lynn students often perceive the campus library as a quiet and pleasant place to get work done. Though this is true, the installations and professional staff at the library make the learning experience at Lynn so much more didactic and helpful. Thanks to a variety of innovative tools and personal experts, students have access to unique opportunities through the library during their entire college experience. Whether on campus or online, anywhere at any time, students have access to the library data bases. From millions of journal articles online and over 160,000 streaming video, audio clips, CDs or DVDs; 215,000 e-books and 130,000 print books, magazines and journals. There is a tremendous amount of quality information available on the Lynn Data Base. Students can find in depth research resources not available elsewhere.

“The Lynn data bases is without a doubt an advantageous tool to use for students who want to write quality papers,” said Lynn professor Erika Grodzki “I recognize that when students use this search engine they find their research process to be smoother and more reliable.” Having access to current events and up-to-date information has value in the modern world now that the world is constantly changing. Lynn offers students full complementary access to the New York Times which allows students to stay updated to the most recent news. Grammarly is a platform for writers to make sure everything typed is easy to read, effective and mistake-free. Grammarly is trusted by students, professional writers, business people, bloggers and people who just want to write better. According to the site, “No matter what your writing situation is, Grammarly adapts to your needs, giving you the confidence of mistake-free writing every time you write.” Librarians play a big part in student success. Expert librarians are always willing to help students find and use information to make essays, papers or even research projects better. From choosing a paper topic to finding reliable evidence to supporting arguments and cite sources. If there is no time to meet, students have the luxury to connect with librarians via email,

Chat, text and phone. There is a section column at the Lynn library website called Libchat where students can type any question in regards to their college assignments and receive an immediate response from librarian experts. The Knowledge Imaging Center, created by the Digital Library Systems Group, is equipped with a Canon EOS DSLR camera, bright LED lighting and a touchscreen. The technology allows faculty, staff and students to scan textbooks, magazines and research material and save a copy for future reference. The new scanning device facilitates students a new way to get their texts for free. “This is such a useful tool at the library” said Gabriela Pierson, freshman. “I use it for all of my text books, instead of buying very expensive books I scan all the pages I need and in a matter of seconds I get the content sent to my email.” Student’s printers not working is not an excuse to hand in assignments at Lynn. Printing at the library is not only free but it is completely unlimited. The printers at Lynn have a queue where individuals can decide what documents they wish to print or they can manually delete the documents right from the printer. For more information on other helpful tools and sources available to Lynn students, visit the Library on campus or their website http:// lynn-library.libguides.com/library/ home.
