SUNSET STRIP REINVIGORATION

spring 2009

Sunset Strip is a 1.7-mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard bounded by Crescent Heights on the east and Doheny Drive on the west. Once glamorized by the golden era of Rock music scene, the contemporary Strip exists as a series of fragmented, self-contained episodes. Whisky a Go Go, the Roxy, Viper room - music venues that once propelled the rock music scene and fueled the strip’s first cultural and commercial boom - present themselves as generic boxes that detach from the street, while a new surge of high fashions demanding competing attention on the east. Tower Records flagship store at Sunset and Horn, the “first stop in LA” for creators, producers, and aficionados, hosted dozens of impromptu performances by musicians during its 35-year lifespan. Despite much community protest it was liquidated in 2006 and the store was sold. This project speculate on the reinvigoration of the Strip, on both the urban and the architectural scale, by infusing it with an identity - “TR label”, as a continuum of the music culture of the Strip. Saturates this urban culture and lifestyle throughout the whole stretch through networking - information media, music events unifying and transparentizing the key music venues, and infrastructual supports (user friendly open spaces). While the architectural scale address the idea of inclusiveness through fluidity and openness of space and innovative programs that invite the participation of music goers and tourists alike.

VERTICAL CIRCULATION

The flow of the topology shaped the interior spaces while reciprocally shaped by the programs. The fillet edges, angle, directionality, and smoothness of the surface all contribute to this sense of spatial and experiential inter-connectivity and flow. the recording / rehearsal studio, for example, can open up to the outdoor stage during concert and other special events, while the digital panel on the surface periodically display the event happening inside the studio. The retail experience blends seamlessly with the experience of being in the open, public space.

This project is part of an on-going process of exploration of digital technological impact on architecture with an emphasis on the design of topological, architectural surfaces - surfaces that, assembled from many parts, are formally continuous and have thickness, material articulation and structure. The process involves two parts: - A plaster mock-up of a sculptural form, created in MAYA, is made to study its formal and spatial quality - Material, assembly and fabrication method are chosen to produce a scaled model for an imaginative 200 m2 pavilion in the serenely beautiful UCLA sculpture garden. Therefore required specific design decisions regarding its practical and theatrical performance - its relationship to the site, the ground, the sky, surrounding trees, and its users. SIDE

Hill on the ISLAND

J a n . - N o v. 2 0 1 0

In this project I was offered the unique opportunity to work closely with the client as a project architect. The client, a developer with interior design and architecture background, wants a “new image” that is different from the traditional Chinese architecture he’s familiar with and used to do. In addition to the demand of a fresh look, the client also wants to pack 76 villas with various sizes into the 76616 square meter (18.9 acres) parcel on the artificial Sanya Phoenix Island (designed by MAD) in Hainan island, China. As one walks along the main street, the flat island appears to be silhouetted by the gracefully curvilinear distant mountains, one of which inspires a love fair tale that grants its name “Deer Gaze” and becomes the landmark of the island city. In the site scale , “The Hill” on the island concept is an extension of this unique topology. Rows of villas are gradually raised to form a hill-like image - which are also a critical move that guarantee panoramic view of the ocean. In the architectural scale, the program of each villa is carefully tailored toward a low-key yet luxurious beach-restort lifestyle, while its form inspired by the controlled yet dynamic and lively sensibility of yacht design. The two biggest challenges keeping clients coming from the ocean by yachts and boats are rocks and waves: the shallow underwater clearance keep yachts six meters away from shore, and during Typhoon season from July to October, huge waves infuriated by storm post threats not only to boats and ships, but anything near shore on the Phoenix Island. To respond to the future demand of people coming from the ocean, and with the understanding of the force of nature in mind, we envision the Water Gateway project to consists of three parts: 1. a floating platform, 6 meters away from shore, that serves as a yacht dock and can be towed away in case of big storms. 2. a bridge, 8 meters long, which can rotate up and down. 3. a frame to hoist the bridge up when the bridge is not in use or in case of storm scenarios. Due to the limited resources and expertise, the construction process is full of intense communication, supervision, adjustments, and modifications. Made entirely of painted steel tubes and plates, the Water Gateway serves as an iconic entry point for people coming from the ocean.

松花江 - the Songhua River, flows through the economic center of the city of Haerbin, is the cultural and spiritual symbol of the city.

Full of vitality, ebbs and

flows, flood and frozen - its cyclical and seasonal change left its trail. The peripheral flat plain served to punctuate its graceful curve. The Haerbin Opera House’s form is inspired by this streamline curvature: an extension of the icy river, an reverberation of the might and spirit of nature. With structural integrity, the firmness of the architecture is reinforced by the softness of the green landscape that embraces it. Visible from both the old and new towns of the city, it’s a symbol, a beacon, much like the river, drawing people from all over the world for the world-class performance and cultural exchange. The organic nature of the Opera House remains honest to the natural and spiritual landscape of Haerbin and Songhua River, a tribute to the its beauty.
