Welcome September 2012

At Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, our purpose is to improve the health and lives of the thousands of people who use our services every day. But we think we can all take steps to improve our health and lives. We’ve been inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and we want to inspire you too. We have over 16,000 members and we want to inspire each of you to set a goal that makes a positive difference to your health and your life. We’ll be doing this in lots of different ways throughout the year.

Raising funds

During 2012 we will be working closely with our Healthy Living Service to raise funds for equipment and other resources that are above and beyond what we can offer within our NHS resources. The Healthy Living Service will use the funds to purchase equipment, such as outdoor and indoor gym equipment, which will help people who use our services improve their physical health.

have got involved in a wide range of activities for the Trust, from hikes in the Yorkshire Dales to Jubilee celebrations. We are excited to be hosting our Annual Members’ Day at Harewood House this year, and look forward to an appearance from sporting legend, Frank Bruno. staff, members, volunteers, carers and people who use our services to share their experiences. Research shows that the most effective means of challenging mental health stigma is through direct contact between people who have personal experience of mental health difficulties and the public, on equal terms. Time to Change Leeds do some fantastic work and host a human library where people can sit and listen to people’s stories. One of the ‘human books’ is our What’s your Goal? campaign ambassador, Simon Buckden, who speaks of his personal experience of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

We are incredibly excited to be hosting the event at such a fantastic location and hope you will join us for the brilliant activities planned throughout the day. One of the highlights of the day will be an interview session with boxing legend, Frank Bruno. Frank has accomplished great things during his sporting careers and will speak about this alongside his own experience of mental ill-health. In 2003, Frank was diagnosed with Bipolar after experiencing a marriage breakdown, a loved one passing away and an immense amount of pressure from the outside world. To help Frank with his recovery journey, he continues to look after his health by exercising and eating well. During the interview Frank will talk about his experiences and stigma he has experienced.

What’s happening on the day? Delegates will be invited to attend the Annual General Meeting where chief 04 Imagine Issue 2

We are incredibly grateful to Harewood House for acting as the major supporter for both events and helping us to significantly reduce the cost. Without the support of our sponsors, events like these would not be possible. Transformation Programme

Transformation Focus on recovery

In the last issue of Imagine we brought you details of Transformation, a programme which aims to transform the way our services are provided. As we carry out this transformation, there will be many changes that will benefit the people that use our services. One of these benefits will be services that are more recovery orientated. “Recovery is a word commonly used by people with mental health needs to describe their struggles to live meaningful and satisfying lives.” (Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health) Recovery means different things to different

people and it is often more easy to say what it is not, rather than what it is. With the aim of celebrating the work the Trust has done so far in embedding recovery principles in to our services, the Recovery and Social Inclusion Team hosted a Recovery Workshop on Thursday 5 July. The workshop brought together people with lived experience of mental health difficulties, carers, partner organisations, as well as clinical and corporate staff to share knowledge, discuss what changes have been implemented so far and look at how further practice can be developed in the future. Throughout the day there were presentations from a range of people such as; Tricia Thorpe, Time to Change Leeds project worker; Sally Hall, co-ordinator of Workplace Leeds; and John Needham and Paul Exley, clinical staff who described the work they have done to support recovery and person-centred dementia care.

The ‘Get me?’ campaign to raise awareness about learning disabilities will launch on Wednesday 12 September with a film premier at the Royal Armouries, Leeds. Over the past couple of months, the Trust has been working with people with learning disabilities, Tenfold and People in Action in this innovative awareness campaign. We have developed posters with quotes taken from discussions where people with a learning disability have talked about the day-to-day things that are important to them. The aim of the posters is to get people to see past a disability and see the person. As well as that we have produced a fantastic, quirky film featuring Leeds residents. 10 Imagine Issue 2

Olympic poet shares experiences of being in care

On Friday 4 May 2012 the Northern School of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (NSCAP) welcomed poet, Lemn Sissay, to Leeds to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the Northern Looked After and Adopted Children Forum. Lemn, who is the official poet at London Olympics 2012, spoke powerfully about his own experience of being in care and provided much food for thought for professionals from across health, social care and education. The event also included a presentation on multi-agency approaches to working with Looked After Children and the northern launch of the Young Minds report “Improving the mental health of Looked After Young People: An exploration of mental health stigma”. Geography group

Ward 4 at The Newsam Centre has recently introduced a geography group, which encourages positive interactions between people who use our services and staff through discussion about different cultures in different countries/cities. The group, which has received a great amount of interest from service users, delivers many great benefits such as increasing confidence and self-esteem, empowering service users, improving focus and concentration and providing some education.

Get Growing Project

Give and Gain Day takes place each year as a way to develop the skills and talents of employees across many organisations’ whilst making a difference to the local communities. Staff who were unable to attend The Mount were busy taking part in the Trust’s world record attempt for the longest line of bunting.

The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) has teamed up with people who use our services at Bootham Park Hospital in York to deliver the Get Growing Project. Each fortnight the group meet to tend to the flower beds and grow plants in the gardens of the hospital grounds. Gardening has been proven to deliver health and wellbeing benefits and the group look forward to seeing their hard work flourish.

Speaking about the success of the day, Alex Irvine, clinical team manager, said: “Having the volunteers join us for the day definitely put a smile on our service users’ faces. Just by having a few extra pairs of hands, we were able to spend more time with each person, getting them involved in the stimulating activities. All in all it was a positive experience for everyone.” Imagine Issue 2 11

I’ll check my numerous twitter accounts, which range from accounts on a mental health recovery theme to one talking about fashion (much to the annoyance of my daughter who studies this at university). Tell us a little about your role

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

A large part of my role involves promoting recovery within a variety of agendas. I make weekly visits to the units in the Rehabilitation and Recovery Services to spend time with the people at the heart of the service and cofacilitate some groups there too. I maintain the Trust‘s recovery website and recently developed a ‘recovery, person centred care and wellbeing’ e-learning module. I am chair for the Trust’s ‘Focus on Recovery’ group so I try to keep on the ball with the wider recovery agenda. I lead on the service user network involvement group, where I try to maintain an interesting and inclusive agenda. I am beginning to develop contacts within York where I would really like to become involved in developing the recovery implementation project. The role involves acting a representatives of lived experience and the recovery movement.

First I would head to Japan to train at Iwama dojo which is where the founder of Aikido lived. It has spiritual significance to me. And then I’ll head to Tobago which is where my wife and I went for our honeymoon. I guess my wife would have to shop while in Japan.

Did you set a goal for 2012? To promote recovery as best I can and continue to do martial arts training.

What’s your Goal? Campaign update We’re half way through our campaign and the response has been fantastic so far with so many people setting out to achieve their goals this year.

Jubilee celebrations

We look forward to seeing even more people creating goals for themselves; you can start anytime or pick up where you’ve left off with any resolutions you made at the beginning of the year.

The jubilee spirit took over the Trust on Thursday 31 May and Friday 1 June as parties were held at various locations, all helping to raise money for charitable funds. In a true British style, cake stalls were the main feature along with raffles, tombolas, book stalls and bunting making stalls. In York at Bootham Park Hospital, service users and staff were treated to a vintage tea party in the Umbrella Café and raised £551.25; and, at Trust HQ alone, £173 was raised. All money raised will be put towards the charitable funds pot, where applications can be made for the money to be used to benefit people who use our services.

Going for gold

The year-long What’s your Goal? campaign has been accredited with the gold standard in the NHS Sport and Physical Activity Programme. On hearing the news of our award, Chris Butler, chief executive said: “It’s fantastic that the Trust has been awarded the gold accreditation for the What’s your Goal? campaign. The campaign has already achieved a great deal and will continue to do so throughout 2012. The campaign will ultimately benefit our patients as a healthy staff body results in decreased absence levels and increased motivation.” 14 Imagine Issue 2

Here’s what one walker had to say about the Whernside walk:

Focus on Engagement and Involvement A round up of what’s been happening in engagement and involvement Building your Trust

In the space of a week we had two Building your Trust (ByT) events, a very busy time for the Engagement Team! Our first ByT in York took place on Friday 15 June with the theme of strategy and values. This included discussing who shapes our Trust strategy as well as our means goals and end goals, which help us focus on improving the health and wellbeing of the people who use our services. In Leeds, the group also discussed the Trust strategy as well as the Transformation programme and recovery principles. To help us engage with a wider audience, live tweeting took place so people on Twitter could keep track of the discussions by following #leedsyorkbyt. Follow @LeedsandYorkPFT to see all our tweets about things happening around the Trust. Our next ByT meeting is on Tuesday 25 September at our Annual Members’ Day.

Diversity & Social Inclusion

The latest Diversity and Social Inclusion Forum took place on Wednesday 8 August with the theme of innovation and good practice from Older People’s Mental Health Services. The aim of the Diversity and Social Inclusion Forum is to support the implementation and development of diversity, inclusion and recovery work within the Trust. The Forum welcomes staff, governors, nonexecutive directors, service users, carers and our wider statutory and community sector organisations. The next forum will be on Wednesday 7 November at Inkwell in Leeds. To find out details, email diversity.lypft@nhs.net or call (0113) 29 52401 / 29 52465 to speak to the team.

STAR Scheme

In April, the STAR Scheme was introduced by the Trust as a way for staff and volunteers to nominate someone they feel has represented the Trust’s values. Susan Tyler, director of workforce development, gives her reasons for why the scheme is so important: “The purpose of the STAR Scheme is to recognise the valuable contribution that our staff members and volunteers make on a daily basis. It is important that we acknowledge and reward colleagues who constantly and consistently strive to provide excellent services in whatever role they fulfil within the Trust.”

April’s winner

Our first winner of the scheme back in April was Carolyn Moran, senior community learning disability nurse, based at Aire Court. On receiving the award, she said: “In my work as a learning disability nurse I was proud to receive this award and the recognition from the Trust for my contribution. I believe that I am able to carry out this type of work because I work within a supportive team and I would

STAR Scheme Winners so far… like to thank my colleagues at Sector B.”

May’s winner

Alex Irvine, clinical team manager at The Mount, was selected as the STAR Scheme winner for May. Alex was nominated by Caroline Bamford, head of strategy and inclusion, for her involvement in organising for staff from Lloyds Banking Group to volunteer at The Mount for the day as part of their Give and Gain Day 2012.

June’s winner

Health care assistant, Sandra Stead, is the third person to be given the STAR award. Winning this award is another addition to a special year for Sandra as she celebrates her 60th birthday and 12 years working for the Trust. On her reason for nominating Sandra, Jude, said: “Sandra is just a ‘constant’ in the team here at Peppermill. Everyone in the team looks forward to working on the same shift as Sandra- she is so positive about life that her enthusiasm rubs off.”

Congratulations to our winners so far!

Public attitudes survey The results Back in June we asked our members to take part in our survey to find out more about people’s attitudes towards mental health. We are delighted that 328 people took part from across Leeds, York and surrounding areas, an increase in responses compared to last year’s survey. The results have been really interesting and we have put together a brief snapshot of what we found. The full report is available online at www.leedsandyorkpft.nhs.uk or you can request a paper copy by calling (0113) 30 55989.

employers would support them. In recent times, the media has been blamed for a poor portrayal of people with mental health difficulties and we wanted to find out whether the media influences the public’s view. 253 people felt that the media does influence people’s view a lot, with just eight respondents being of the opinion that it doesn’t. Just under half of the people asked felt that the media’s portrayal is not fair and work should be done to improve the representations.

When asked whether their place of work would support them if they became depressed, 39% felt strongly that their 18 Imagine Issue 2

On Wednesday 18 July, the Trust officially opened the ‘Garden of Wellbeing’ at The Mount, a unit which provides acute inpatient care to older people with both mental health needs and dementia.

The unveiling of the garden was just the first part of a larger project to develop three gardens at the unit, which will offer people who use the service an outdoor area to meet with family and friends whilst enjoying the surroundings and getting involved in a spot of gardening therapy.

Ruby Wax (above) is vocal about her own mental health problems and encourages others to discuss their struggles. Thank you to everyone who took part in the survey.

Speaking about how the project grew to life, Phil said; “The development was initiated by our carers for people with dementia, with the aim of creating an outdoor environment, which provides a therapeutic activity and stimulates the senses as well as being a place that people that use our services and their families can enjoy. It’s great to see the project finally come to fruition and the team and I look forward to seeing everyone benefitting from it.” Later in the day Trust chair, Frank Griffiths, and chief executive, Chris Butler, arrived to cut the ribbon and declare the gardens open.

We asked whether mental health stigma and discrimination has changed in the past year. Positively, 103 people felt it had decreased compared with 192 who thought it had not.

Out of the 328 people asked, 170 thought that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life, which is in-line with national research. In July, Channel 4 ran a campaign called ‘4 Goes Mad’ to highlight employment issues faced by those who have mental health difficulties. Our survey asked whether people with mental health problems should have the same rights to a job as anyone else and 233 people agreed strongly that they should.

Garden of Wellbeing Official launch

First to arrive at the opening was the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Ann Castle, who was shown around the service by Phil Sutherland, clinical team manager at The Mount.

Frank said: “It is a pleasure to be invited to open the ‘Garden of Wellbeing’ and see the fantastic work that has been done over the past few months. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved, especially the project team and I look forward to seeing everyone enjoying all three gardens later in the year.” Service users, carers and staff were treated to live music throughout the day as well as cakes baked by volunteers from Lloyds Banking Group. The remaining two gardens will be unveiled later this year, and these have been specially designed to benefit people with mental health needs with an emphasis on using gardening as a therapeutic activity.

Commitment to quality of care We focus on quality and strive to get the basics right. We welcome feedback, learn from our experiences and build on our successes. • Staff have protected time to focus and reflect, and workloads are planned to include time for paperwork and training • Our clinical meetings provide a meaningful venue for thoughtful reflection and planning • Every care plan is drawn up collaboratively with the service user and/or carer, with clear objectives and timeframes

Working together We work together across organisational boundaries to put people first in everything we do. • We work collaboratively with care co-ordinators to ensure they stay involved with their clients • We provide effective communication and information sharing to improve service users journey through mental health services • All service users are offered a copy of their care plan, contact plan and transfer of care letters

Since starting out, the service has been led by several managers, inadvertently causing the team numerous changes of direction in terms of strategy and priority. Undoubtedly, this will have been testing for the staff working in the team, having to adapt to these changes in approach and consequently the Trust values (see the values in full, head to www.leedsandyorkpft.nhs.uk) provide an excellent foundation to base our working principles upon. Earlier this year the team were able to take some time out and spend a day looking at developing the service. I felt it would be 20 Imagine Issue 2

Improving lives We strive to improve health and lives through providing mental health and learning disability care. We support and empower people to take the journey of recovery in every aspect of their lives. • We proactively seek feedback from service users and carers about their experience of home treatment and make improvements based on this feedback • We develop clearer meaningful outcomes, using assessment tools to enhance/inform feedback to clients and multi disciplinary teams • We set clear goals with service users and carers to help develop their care plan, with a view to promoting and enabling recovery

Compassion We take time to respond to everyone’s experiences. We deliver care with empathy and kindness for people we serve and work alongside. • We look out for each other, recognise when we need support and take action to meet our needs • We provide individualised care, using a flexible approach to the changing presentation of service users individual needs • We demonstrate hope, empathy and optimism in our interactions with our service users and their carers

Everyone counts We work for the benefit of the whole community and make sure nobody is excluded or left behind. We recognise that we all have a part to play in making ourselves and our communities healthier. • Everyone has a voice and all input is valued • We work with service users and carers to give them a choice • We enable others to progress and develop

I am really pleased with the team’s engagement in the work. We have produced a team values charter setting out the high standards we expect of ourselves which are aligned to the values. The York IHTT is a fantastic team with a wealth of skill and experience to draw on. The charter can be found at www.leedsandyorkpft.nhs.uk under the Adult section of Our Services.

On Tuesday 4 September 2012 we will be starting our next round of elections for the vacant seats on the Council. If

you are eligible to stand for election and are interested in doing so please visit our website www.leedsandyorkpft.nhs.uk where you will find all the information you need, alternatively you can ring Cath Brand on 0113 30 55 930. Don’t leave it too late though as your nomination form needs to in by Thursday 20 September.
