WELCOME TO...
Welcome to the Lyric, and to our sensational festive programme for 2018.
In the year that the Lyric celebrates its 50th anniversary on Ridgeway Street, it is fitting that we are producing Alice: the Musical by Paul Boyd - a show that was commissioned by the Lyric Theatre and first performed back in 1998. This unique magical musical version of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale has since been performed all around the world, and I am thrilled that it is back home this Christmas to delight and entertain families all across Northern Ireland once again.
We are also delighted to have Grimes and McKee back on the Main Stage with the hilarious Bah, Humbug!, a modern day Belfast take on the classic Dickens tale A Christmas Carol. Whichever show you are here to see, it’s a pleasure to have you at the Lyric this Christmas and I hope you have a thoroughly good time.
This has been an extraordinary year, as we celebrated 50 years of making theatre on Ridgeway Street. We continue to be driven by the vision of Mary O’Malley, and inspired by the Secular Prayers given to us by Brian Friel at the opening of the new building in 2011 to ensure the Lyric is always “a warm house, a welcoming house… a house of play, and that laughter and merrymaking and wit and comedy and raucous fun and ordinary giddiness and silly giggling may be accommodated here and indeed encouraged.”
Our Lyric 50 programme included The Colleen Bawn a co-production with Bruiser; a new production of Brian Friel’s Lovers: Winners and Losers, for which Emma Jordan was nominated as Best Director at the UK Theatre Awards; a sell-out success of Terri Hooley’s story Good Vibrations by Glenn Patterson and Colin Carberry which was
We continue to believe that at the core of our creative success is our unwavering commitment to the development of local talent across the entire spectrum of theatre – actors, directors, writers, designers and technical staff. In October theatre professionals from our present and past contributed their incredible talents to a very special Lyric 50 celebration which tapped into the rich legacy of the Lyric Theatre. It was a privilege for me to share the stage with over 50 actors, singers, directors and playwrights who made the event possible, and gave us an opportunity to raise vital funds to support and develop artists and practitioners across all areas of the Lyric theatre, both on and off stage.
I would like to end with a heartfelt thank you for your continuing support of the Lyric. Your patronage over the last 50 years is what will ensure that the Lyric Theatre remains a cornerstone of the creative industries for many years to come.
Wishing you and your families a very happy Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you again in the new year.
