Waitangi Day: A Special Harbour Day The Treaty in Action
Waitangi Day is all about celebrating being a New Zealander and reflecting on the foundation document of the Nation, The Treaty of Waitangi that was signed between Maori and the British on February 6th 1840. This year residents of Lyttelton Harbour [Whakaraupo] were invited by Te Hapu o Ngati Wheke to visit Rapaki Marae. It was a wonderful opportunity for residents to meet our Māori neighbours, visit the new meeting house and learn more about their history, culture and protocols on the marae. Ripeka Paraone was one of many wonderful hosts for the day. Many visitors had never been to our local marae and some had never been called onto a marae. With careful instruction by Ripeka we were welcomed by a Powhiri into the most beautiful whare whakairo [carved meeting house]. The welcome was warm and genuine and it indeed felt one of those very special days. Wendy Everingham from the Lyttelton Harbour Information reports “I felt very privileged to be there. This was a very intimate sharing between locals It was a true reflection of all the communities around the harbour. People were from all walks of life, differing ages and nationalities, celebrating Waitangi Day together.” Ripeka Paraone was delighted by the community response. “I only expected 150 people and I stopped counting at 300” she said. The whare was overflowing. When the Powhiri concluded there was a time of sharing over kai [food] and then we were treated to a wonderful cultural performance by Te Ahikomau followed by Rewi Couch speaking in detail about the whare whakairo. Recently built it replaced the old hall Te Wheke. For Wendy Everingham, coming into the whare reminded her of the difference of going into churches in northern Eurpoe. “The Lutheran places of worship tended to be light and bright whilst the older style churches were dark and gloomy. The whare was like a Lutheran place of worship. It glowed like a paua shell.” Rewi described all the special features to the Waitangi Day visitors. The symbolic shape of the building, the spiritual mauri of the space its wonderful carvings revealing the ancestry of the descendants back to beginning of Aoteroa and the paintings that depicted the gods, nature, plants and food all essential to life. In between there were snippets of history from recent times. Interestingly as he explained the ancestry he said “enemies became part of us”. That seemed a good way to finish. Our two cultures are very interwoven now. By growing our special partnership we can keep on weaving and developing to create a true treaty partnership envisioned in the 1840’s. Thank you Te Hapu o Ngati Wheke. and Image: Lyttelton Harbour Information ArticleArticle and Images: Lyttelton Harbour Information CentreCentre

APIE4U and Breads of Europe What is the Story with Craig?
We are sure most of you will recognise the familiar number plate of Lyttelton’s very own pie designer Craig Minehan. It has been a bit of a bumpy road for him since the earthquakes compromised his Brighton Bakery and then his café, the well known Bridge Street Bakehouse. On reflection, he tells me that the recovery period after the earthquakes when he battled to keep his shop open was one of the hardest periods he has ever faced. With endless road works and an exit only bridge, it was really hard work keeping the bakery going. He exemplified the spirit of shop owners at the time. Businesses were re-opened despite the odds, often compromising insurance payouts unbeknown to the owners. That’s pretty much Craig’s story. Just when he thought things couldn’t get any worse, on 8 November 2012 CERA closed the café where he had squeezed the pie making side of the business into. Citing earthquake risk, Craig was given six hours notice to leave! As most of us know, it’s hard enough moving house but when you have to move a bakery things are even more complicated. Life has the most interesting twists and turns. Many people were quickly on the look out to help Craig get back up and running. His book keepers partner got the ball rolling; he was cycling in Woolston, noticed Breads of Europe and decided to call in and see if they might know of any available space in the area. The managers, Jill and Jackie said, “We can do better than that, we have some room, get Craig to come over this afternoon”. A somewhat shell shocked Craig came over. Initially his thoughts were “It’s too small”, but then Brian said “Just do it, you have nothing to lose, where else are you going to find a place to operate from”? So that was the beginning of a most unlikely partnership between Breads of Europe in Woolston and the Bridge Street Bakehouse. And advantages started to flow immediately. With no staff of his own left Craig has recruited Breads of Europe employee Mark who can help him out at times. Another retail opportunity resulted for Craig’s pies. They are now sold directly through the bakery in Woolston and the other Breads of Europe franchised store in Colombo Street. Losing many of his customers, both retail and wholesale Craig is having to think outside of the square to on sell his pies. Farmers Markets’ have become one of his main outlets. Trading at Ohoka on Friday and Lyttelton on Saturday has helped keep things afloat. He also supplies the Harbour Co-op and the Diamond Harbour Country store. He’s on the lookout for more opportunities so if you are interested get in touch. You would think after all this Craig would just want to shut up shop, but far from it. He really likes making pies. He loves the creativity of them. As he says “they are the perfect meal in a pastry case.” Craig is rightfully proud of his top quality product that he’s been refining since 2000 and the many regular customers that seek him out. Sourcing much of the fillings locally, he aims for a really high quality product. Ashby’s butchers, here every week at the Farmers Market, supply all the meats in Craig’s pie ranges. Change creates new opportunities for all of us. “Whilst the partnership with Breads of Europe might not be permanent, it does open the eyes to new possibilities” Craig said. “Maybe Lyttelton will get its own pie shop one day”. Craig quite likes the thought working in Port, where he lives. One thing is for sure there will be no stopping Craig. He’s totally inspired by the wonderful Lyttelton characters who keep our place humming and he wants to be part of that.

Locals Step Up To Challenge 49 Qualified First Aiders
Pete Dawson was beaming last Monday evening as he presided over an awards ceremony at the Lyttelton St John’s Base. Accompanied by local Community Civil Defence leader Jules Lee and Community Board Member Andrew Turner they presented certificates to some of the forty nine people who recently qualified. Accepting certificates were people from right around the harbour. The courses were provided free of charge by St John and were offered because it had been identified that our area was low on community volunteers for the ambulance service. This was placing stress on existing volunteers and staff. The course and subsequent publicity has had the desired effect. Three of the graduates have committed to become volunteers at the station and a further two people have also expressed interest. In addition twenty four 10-18 year olds are actively participating at the centre. The importance of the course was realised immediately. Within a day of completion Carole Atkins from Diamond Harbour had to come to the aid of an elderly lady on the Peninsula. Everyone who graduated felt more confident to help someone in an emergency until the trained help arrived. Pete used the opportunity to tell us more about the charity that he’s been a volunteer at for so many years. “Operational costs for the service are huge. It’s $8000 to bring a trainee up to the required trained level, $180,000 for an ambulance, at least $60-70,000 for the wages of a base line paramedic. In general terms it’s been calculated that operational costs are $894 per ambulance trip” said Pete. He explained that if it’s an ACC claim costs are paid in full by the government however when the call out isn’t an accident for example someone fainting, stroke etc, if you aren’t a member of St John’s and you don’t pay the minimal $88 charge they are not reimbursed for the costs of the ambulance trip! You can support St John in many ways. Become a member, volunteer or donate when you are able to. For more information either chat with Pete Dawson or visit www.stjohn.org.nz. Fire Station Update Progress update: the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade has relocated back to the London street site, as a temporary solution they say. For those of you who have been parking in front of the Fire Station site while the fire trucks have been on Norwich Quay, now is the time to forgo this habit. If you see someone parking on the yellow line, the fire service asks if you can point out to them that it is not a good idea. In the event of an emergency you wouldn’t want your car to be the one that is in the way. Article: Adapted from www.facebook.com/LytteltonVolunteerFireBrigade

Living Springs: 40 Years Living the Dream The founding story of Living Springs is marked by two couples, David and Eddi Down and Peter and Anne Morrow, who where bought together in a series of “remarkable coincidences” in 1971-1972. Roger and Val Roxburgh joined them as hands-on pioneers on the property after it was acquired; it would appear that they were led of God to establish Living Springs. The dream continues today. Come and celebrate the beginning, and get excited about the future of Living Springs. It is a special place and we would love you to be a part of it.

Auckland alt-folk outfit Bond Street Bridge present tales of courage, endurance and Edwardian pluck in their multimedia song cycle ‘The Explorer’s Club: Antarctica’, touring throughout New Zealand in February. Inspired by the incredible stories of Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton, songwriter Sam Prebble has recruited a band of seasoned folk musicians from the Auckland underground and produced a series of stirring vignettes drawn from the diaries and letters of these stalwart adventurers. Tales of shipwreck, frostbite, and stiff-upper-lip survival in the snow are presented in a combination of spoken-word storytelling and original folk songs, along with projected illustrations by Auckland artist Emily Cater and heritage photographs from the expeditions themselves. Performances range from ethereal to foot-stomping; arrangements run the gamut from delicate vocal harmonies to dramatic percussive explosions. Bond Street Bridge presents a show that will take listeners on a journey – from heartbreak to ice-melt, from triumph to defeat. With the groundbreaking Explorer’s Club cycle, audiences can expect to be transported back to a time when the ice was unforgiving, the pole was untouched, and if the worst came to the worst, one could always eat the dogs. plenty to share In Lyttelton so many residents grow vegetables; or have fruit trees literally dripping with produce. Plenty to Share is about sharing any excess produce with the community. So if your lemon tree is yellow with goodness and you can’t keep up with making lemon curd, bring those surplus fruits down to the organisers, where every Saturday the swapping of produce is well underway in Lyttelton on the corner of London and Canterbury Street; and also in Diamond Harbour on a Saturday morning at the village centre. Always at the forefront of any movement or great transition across time and space, they have maintained their connection to the Divine Source from which they were birthed. Now here, in this time and space, they continue to sing the praises of the Divine. Their vibration is such that transformation and healing always follows their sound. Sometimes this does not come in an expected form but where soul permission is given, it is always for the highest good of all. It will always be in line with the highest order that fuels their service. The reason these great beings of light exist is to help others reach out to the truth of their being; that they might have a re connection and maintain a great oneness with the Divine Source that made all things - The Divine Source that has created you with such detail and precision that the very fact you are here in existence means that you are fulfilling the purpose for which you were made. About: Callah Callah is a warrior of the light. He is an entity of Divine Origin, an Ancient and Great Soul of numerous incarnations. He has walked the path from light to dark, dark to light, many times over. He now is an Essence, made up of a multitude of energies that reflect and serve the Divine Light. While it may be difficult to grasp, he is one with an entourage that numbers beyond what can be expressed in words. These energies include: realms; in-between spaces; elemental fields; lineages; races, and beings, both inter-dimensional and galactic. While the energies number so many not all can be acknowledged here; they all embrace and gather under the one name: Callah. Testimonials “The Empathic workshop brought out the healing tears in me. Initially I was shamed by these tears, but I found it healed a big hole in me. I know it sounds very "unbelievable", and I am, as I said, a relative baby to this new way of celebrating who I am, but I have to say that if it is your path, you will know it!” Tracey W For more information and to book online go to the website: www.callah-ancients.com Or email admin@callah-ancients.com

Lyttelton Community Garden News What’s Happening at the Oxford Street Garden
Regular gardening sessions on Monday afternoon and evenings; and Wednesday mornings continue to be both fun and productive. As well as late spring / early summer crops of potatoes, peas, strawberries etc, we have a growing chicken population! Several local people have donated their chickens to our flock, and they seem to be thriving with the nice weather and continued attention from regular visitors! In November we worked with The Concert organisers and had eight students earning their concert tickets by working in the garden, clearing and re-laying much-needed paths. The garden featured in November’s Festival of Walking as part of the popular I-Spy event and also as one of the destinations on the ‘Chicken Walk’. Community gardeners helped Lyttel Gap Filler with the planting out of the Harbour Light site, with planter boxes for the Petanque site, as well as supplying plants for the old bakery site. We have started to work with Community House to help co-ordinate local people to grow produce for the home delivery meals service that they run. Anyone interested in donating their excess produce to this cause please contact Sue-Ellen at the garden. Late in December we received a very generous donation from the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal Trust to help us make repairs and improvements to the cob oven area – work is currently underway. Lyttelton Garage Sale News For the three months October to December 2012 the total fundraising income was $6,129.60. Garage Sales were run by the Sea Scouts, Lyttelton Main for the School Camp, Plunket, the Karate Club, the School PTA, the Grassy Market, Diamond Harbour Civil Defence, and the Le Leche League as well as internally for the Time Bank and Community Garden. Costs for running the sales are currently between $500 and $600 dollars a month and include money for wages, dump fees, maintaining and running a truck and advertising. Currently groups contribute $20 of their takings towards the running costs and the remainder is covered by the sales that Project Lyttelton runs. Donations are on a steady increase and we are working on a business plan to grow the garage sales in 2013. We have already increased our opening hours and are now open Thursdays and Fridays 2.00 - 4.00pm and Saturdays 10.00 1.00pm. Harbour Resilience Project News It’s been a busy few months for the Harbour Resilience team with several new projects launching or running concurrently. Cath’s garden at Orton Bradley was created as the focal point for a series of permaculture workshops led by Robina McCurdy. These were fully booked and received huge praise from attendees. A Food Forest workshop has set the scene for an up-coming community forest garden in Lyttelton. Robina also led workshops on building food resilience within communities and worked to assist harbour schools with the development of their school kitchen gardens. Plenty to Share re-launched in Lyttelton for the new growing season and has also been launched in Diamond Harbour. Both events run weekly and are small but well supported and have potential to grow. The team continues to support the Harbour Co-op and to liaise and meet with local growers around the harbour. Planning is underway for a Harvest Festival to be held at Orton Bradley in April. Cholmondeley House News On behalf the board, staff and children at Cholmondeley I wish you all the best for the coming year and hope you’re enjoying the glorious weather! School holidays are always a very busy time for Cholmondeley. After taking a two week break over Christmas and New Year our Care Services have been operating at full capacity at Living Springs since our return. Things will go into a bit of a lull while children settle into the new year in their own schools for the first couple of weeks of the term. The staff at Cholmondeley take advantage of this lull by having a week of professional development next week. This includes a debrief of 2012 and finishing off our planning for 2013. Initial indicators are that 2012 has been one of the busiest years in recent memory; 265 children [including 139 children coming to Cholmondeley for the first time] for upwards of 900 admissions. Key themes that are emerging out of our work include a clear link with the earthquakes and the on going distress and disruption that children and their families are experiencing, even nearly two years later. It’s been a fantastic summer in the Bay and we’ve been getting to the bush, beach and pool as much as we can. The design process for the new Cholmondeley continues. After an initial meeting last year with those neighbours identified by a town planner as being immediately affected by the design, we have been listening to very constructive feedback and fine tuning this. Shortly we will resume these discussions once the architect completes the revised concept drawings. We intend to present this design to the local community at a meeting here at Cholmondeley when the discussions with our immediately affected neighbours have been concluded. Last but not least, thanks so much for the support from the Governors Bay community over the Christmas period; to those who dropped in gifts for the children or purchased our Cholmondeley Christmas cards. On that note a major highlight for us last year was the incredible efforts of Peter and Hamish Coldicott in their intrepid trek from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail as a fundraiser for Cholmondeley. It’s nice to see Peter still walking around! We are looking forward to the planned talks that Peter and Hamish are preparing so they can share images, video and their experiences with us all. These will take place late summer/ early autumn in Governors Bay, Christchurch and Ashburton. We will keep you posted on the upcoming dates as they are confirmed. LIFT Library Update Two more items have been added to LIFT, kindly donated by Project Lyttelton: The Shaken Heart: Earthquake Stories from the Heart of Lyttelton 2012 Project Lyttelton Bettina Evans compiled this book of photos taken by herself, Sue-Ellen Sandilands and Jennifer Kenix, and interviews conducted by herself, to tell the stories of the September 2010 and February 2011 quakes. Not only will the reader appreciate the experiences that Lytteltonians went through, you will also now be able to put names you didn’t know to faces that you did know – and vice versa. One of the best stories is ‘The story of the Lyttelton hearts’ – “Lyttel Stitches” - how the mission began, and the comfort they and their makers brought to the community. Food@home 2012 Christine Dann is well known around here, so it’s great to have this book at last. Her chapter headings give you the idea of her content and style: Culinary Confusion; Growing@Home; Community@Garden; Dining@Home; Cooking@Home; Almost@Home; Food@Large; Alimentary Action. There are masses of examples of New Zealand initiatives, foods, recipes, people, gardening methods and photos. An easy-to-read encyclopaedia in 200 pages. Because more books are being returned than are being borrowed, and because there are some other books I really want to get for the library, especially on practical ways to do things, and because my bookcase is straining and groaning with the current overload, I’ve decided to move some books on. Some came from my own bookcase in the beginning, and can return there, but if you want them you may still borrow them from me personally, but they won’t have the LIFT stickers and numbers in them. They are: Chi Kung: Cultivating Personal Energy Downsize this! Random Threats from an Unarmed American Dude, Where’s My Country Imperial Ambitions: Conversations with Chomsky on Post-9/11 World More with Less Cookbook: How to Eat Better, Save Money, etc Natural medicine Secrets and Lies: The Anatomy of an Anti-Environmental PR Campaign Stupid White Men: And Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation
James McRitchie Michael Moore Michael Moore Noam Chomsky Doris Longacre Brian Inglis Nicky Hager and Bob Burton Michael Moore
Others were contributed from the Garage Sale, and have not been popular, so I shall take them back to the Garage Sale unless someone tells me they would like to have them: Bach Flower Therapy: Theory and Practice Green babies: Practical Guidance for Today’s Parents Is that thing diesel? What Can I Do? Using the Internet to help New Zealand’s Environment
Mechthild Scheffer Dr. Penny Stanway Paul Carter Lisa Harrow

And here’s today’s quote, appropriately from our book “Healing our History” by Robert Consedine: ‘I have come to see the Treaty of Waitangi as an essential guide to building a unified, prosperous and peaceful nation. I place my best efforts in working practically towards restoring right relationship with indigenous peoples. This work involves valuing my own cultural identity, understanding the colonial history of this country, raising the awareness of and working with Pakeha, and standing alongside Maori and other indigenous peoples in their struggles for justice.’ To become a member of the LIFT Library, based right here in Lyttelton, contact Juliet Adams on 03 328 8139 or mobile 021 899 404, for more information.

New Zealand Census Day is Coming Tuesday 5 March 2013 | www.census.govt.nz The census is the official count of how many people and dwellings there are in New Zealand. It takes a snapshot of the people in New Zealand and the places where we live. The last census was held in 2006. The census is the official count of how many people and dwellings there are in New Zealand. It takes a snapshot of the people in New Zealand and the places where we live. By law, Statistics New Zealand must hold a census once every five years, and everyone must fill in a form. Why is it important? Population information from the census helps determine how billions of dollars of government funding is spent in the community. It is used to make decisions about services such as: hospitals, schools, roads, public transport and recreational facilities. Census information is used to decide electoral boundaries. It is also used by councils, community groups and businesses to plan for the future. For the 2013 Census you will have the choice of completing your census forms online or on paper, in English or Māori. Filling your forms online is secure, quick, and easy. You need the reference number from your paper forms and your Internet Access Code. Collectors will deliver them to every household in New Zealand before census day. If all of the people in your household complete their forms online, a collector may not need to call back. The Māori electoral option is administered by the Electoral Commission and gives people in New Zealand who are of Māori descent the opportunity to choose whether they want to be on the Māori electoral roll or the general electoral roll when they vote in the next two general elections. The option will take place from 25 March to 24 July 2013.

Suggested recipe for Victoria Sandwich This light cake, often referred to as a sponge, was named in honour of Queen Victoria. The classic method of gauging the amounts was to place the eggs on the scales and balance the fat, sugar and flour against them. It is assumed that an average egg weighs 50g (2oz). If you prefer an exact balance of ingredients, return to the old method of weighing. (Serves 6 to 8) Ingredients 175g (6oz) Butter 3 large Eggs 175g (6oz) Caster Sugar 175g (6oz) Self-raising flour, or Plain Flour with 1½ tsp. Baking Powder For the filling and topping: 3-4 tbsp. Jam or Lemon Curd Little Caster Sugar Method: • Preheat the oven to 180˚C (350˚ F, Gas Mark 4) • Grease and flour or line two 19-20 cm (7½-8in) sandwich tins • Cut the butter into pieces, put into a mixing bowl with the sugar • Cream until soft and light • Either beat in the eggs one at a time, or better still whisk them in a separate bowl then gradually beat into the creamed mixture • Sift the flour, or flour and baking powder, then gently fold into the other ingredients • Divide between the tins and bake for 20 minutes, or until firm to the touch • Cool for 2-3 minutes in the tins then turn out on to a wire cooling tray • When cold, sandwich with the jam or curd and top with the sugar
*************************************** EASY GINGERBREAD RECIPE FOR KIDS Ingredients: 350g/12oz plain flour 175g/6oz light soft brown sugar 100g/4oz butter

Pre-heat the oven to 180˚C/350˚F/Gas Mark 4 Put the flour, butter, ground ginger and bicarbonate of soda in a mixing bowl. Mix it all together with fingertips until crumbly. Add sugar, syrup and egg and mix until it forms a firm pastry mix. Using the rolling pin, roll out the pastry to about 5mm thick. Make sure the surface and the rolling pin are well dusted with flour. Cut out shapes with a knife and/or pastry cutter. Place the cut out pastry on a greased or non-stick baking tray. Put the baking trays in the pre-heated oven and remove after 15 minutes (check after 10 mins).
