Lyttelton Carver Recognised Internationally Caine Tauwhare Heads to Seattle
Lyttelton Harbour is incredibly fortunate to have talented Maori Carver Caine Tauwhare living locally and working at the Whakaraupo Carving Centre on Godley Quay. Since the opening of the centre in 2010 many courses and commissioned works have come from the centre. Lyttelton Township itself is very fortunate to be the recipient of many wonderful artworks from Caine and his students. The latest has just appeared on the outer wall of the Lyttelton Community House. Caine’s exceptional skills are being recognised far and wide. Some of you will be aware that Christchurch and Seattle are sister cities. This connection has resulted in a very interesting project for Caine. A call from the Council and some collaboration with Ngai Tahu saw a delegation of representatives visit Caine and commission him for a piece of garden furniture for the special Pacific Connections Garden that is being created in Seattle as part of the Washington Park Arboretum. The Arboretum, a feature of the Washington garden scene has existed for nearly fifty years and this project is the first new exhibit for many years. The idea of the garden is to create five forests that represent plant species from five countries that span the Pacific Ocean. Gardens will represent forests in Australia, New Zealand, China, Chile and the Seattle region covering twelve acre’s. Caine was asked to make a seat for the garden that represented Maori connections. The work was commissioned from native South American wood and Caine said it was a real challenge to carve the piece, “The wood was really hard and the grain was very challenging,” he said. Never the less he finished the piece and it was shipped off to the USA. To his very pleasant surprise recently he was contacted by his hosts and invited to attend the opening of the 2.5 acre New Zealand forest in Seattle. His work, along with the opening of the forest will be celebrated this September in Seattle, Washington. “I had no idea I would be heading to the USA. Lyttelton Rugby Going Strong Club Day: Saturday 22 June at Lyttelton Recreation Grounds
Lyttelton Rugby are well into the 2013 season and the teams remain as strong as ever given many challenges small rugby clubs face around New Zealand. This year Lyttelton Rugby continues their success with Senior – Division Two Team and six Junior Rugby Teams – Under Six, Under Sevens, Under Nines, Under Tens, Under Twelve and Combined Lyttelton Sumner Under Thirteen. Since last year Lyttelton Rugby decided to redesign the club logo which now features the historic Timeball Station reflecting the heritage both for the club and local community. Lyttelton Rugby was extremely pleased to learn of recent news of the financial support for the rebuilding of the sadly missed Timeball Station. Lyttelton Rugby Club also wishes to thank Simon Jerard and team of Federal Print Limited who designed the new club logo. To grow the small club Lyttelton Rugby Club created a new position and appointed Brendan Nolan as Rugby Manager to promote, support, liaise and encourage more players and teams to play for the historical club. This has proven successful in many ways including continuation of the Senior Team by retaining key members while also gaining new club members. Nolan also has been successful with the Junior Teams with six teams for 2013 season and is the link between both divisions. Linda Preddy is kept extremely busy as the Junior Club Captain, given six teams to oversee and enjoys her role in supporting the younger sports people, coaches and parents. Likewise the Senior Division Two team is ably supported by senior coach, Aaron Mitchell, player/coach, Brendan Nolan and team manager Jodie Goodmanson. Their combined passion and commitment has resulted to date in a very successful season with the aim to win Division Two for the second time. Each Saturday after conclusion of all the games the teams congregate at the Lyttelton Club, known as the Top Club, for weekly presentations and speeches. The Lyttelton Rugby Club have been using the Top Club as their weekly venue for some years now after selling the original club rooms behind the supermarket. This has been a win/win scenario for both clubs enhancing and growing community support for the rugby club. So late Saturday afternoon when you arrive at the Top Club you will find young and old mixing together spinning a few yarns on the games that day or reminiscing of the good old days over a beer or two. Lyttelton Rugby Club sincerely thanks all members and committee of the Lyttelton Club for allowing the club to join with them over the winter months and invite all the good people of Lyttelton to support both clubs by becoming a member and dropping into the Top Club for a drink, catch up with the locals or even a meal at the well established Port View Restaurant. Lyttelton Club Day is set for Saturday 22 June when all the teams play their games on the home ground, at the Lyttelton Recreation Ground. The club extends a warm welcome to the entire Lyttelton community to come down and support the teams for this very special club day. There will be a barbeque and plenty of action as the club looks to win each game from teams from over the hill [townies]. Four Days of Fun Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights
The Festival of Lights is less than a week away now – check out the programme and get along to some of the 30 plus events between Thursday 20 and Sunday 23 June. See The Eastern, AhoriBuzz, Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers, The Greyhounds and Carmel Courtney on the main stage at the Festival of Lights Street Party on Friday 21. Witness the Lyttelton Port of Christchurch Fireworks Extravaganza. London Street comes alive on Friday night with food stalls, mulled wine, the Small Bros photo booth, kids' face painting and activities and much more. Between the bands the crowds will be wowed by the exceptional talents of Lyttelton's circus performers at the Harris and Turner London Street Carnivale. To make life easier, we're putting on a shuttle bus that will run from the gondola car park to the street party. Anytime between 6.00pm and midnight, you can park your car in Heathcote and get a ride direct to London Street in Lyttelton. The service runs both ways half hourly throughout the night. There are many ways for people around the harbour and visitors to the area to get involved in the festival too – bring a lantern, don a costume and take part in the Lyttelton Engineering matariki street parade at 5.30pm on Friday 21, string up some fairy lights at your home and be in to win a prize for the most creative use of a string of fairy lights [prizes from She Chocolat and Cassels Brewery], enter the photography competition, “Lyttelton Alive at the Festival of Lights” and be in to win a great prize from Ken's Cameras. There are also workshops for children and adults on Saturday 22, alongside a Mid-winter Christmas Farmers Market and the Lyttel Book Fair. After dark, dance the night away with the Bush Telegraph Band [barn dance at the Naval Point Club] or Mundi [contemporary world music at Diamond Harbour Hall]. Sunday's big events are the Medieval Sunday Roast, 6.00pm at Tommy Chang's and the outdoor screening of Peter Jackson's “The Frighteners” projected onto Coffee Culture, London Street at 8.00pm. The programme is just crammed with fun events, so pick one up, download or view on our website, come along and enjoy! Something To Celebrate First Female MC for Festival of Lights
Helen Back literally bursts into the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre buzzing. She is blown away that she has been asked to be a co-master of ceremonies at the Festival of Lights. Helen and Adam Jones will lead the show this year. After Helen’s successful show the Hell’N Back Experience at the Wunderbar and Porthole Bar, event coordinator Lucette Hindin approached Helen to see if she would be interested in the role. Helen has been in a spin ever since. “I feel so honoured and wrapt to be the first woman master of ceremonies of the Festival of Lights” she said. For those of you familiar with her “Housewife from Hell” routine we are told she won’t be in housewife mode for the big night. Get ready for flashing horns and the big ball gown! As the Review team talk to Helen about this role, she reflects on the meaning of her name. Helen Jean Chrystal. A little ray of light sent from God! Well this little ray of light is stepping up to the plate and aims to be herself and just enjoy the moment playing with the crowd as she introduces Lyttelton’s well loved musicians and Circo arts performers to the general audience this Friday evening . Helen’s presenting experience has developed over the years. Getting over those stage nerves she mastered Toastmasters. She had a good three years working on her radio show the, House Wife from Hell and then since the earthquakes has developed the Hell’n’Back Experience. Those shows have proven to be very successful, coordinating a group of performers as well as performing herself. Helen has also been involved with the Catalyst Poetry team and many other theatrical events. This is a big milestone in Helen’s life, and she looks forward to the challenge of breaking the mould of MC’s at Lyttelton Festivals. Lyttelton Port Company Assists with Fireworks Training LPC Advisory Notice | 10 June 2013
Over the years the Lyttelton Port Company has provided Fireworks Professionals with locations for testing of their fireworks. Fireworks Professionals have been long associated with the Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights and this year they will be conducting some training in preparation for the up-coming festival. Below is the schedule of training they have planned: Naval Point Club Slipway Wednesday 19 June, 4.00pm End of Breakwater Lyttelton Port Thursday 20 June, 4.00pm and 5.30pm The tests will be dependent on weather and shipping conditions. Lyttelton Local Good Sort Life Time of Giving
Sitting at Project Lyttelton Board meetings is where I was introduced to the work of Mrs Gamble nee Koskela. Often the building is really cold and to keep warm we wrap lovely crocheted rugs around us. There are loads of the rugs and it’s Mrs Gamble who has kindly crocheted and donated them to the team at Project Lyttelton. Happy faces are also found at Community House. Elderly people being given lovely hand knitted rugs. Then there are all the people that Sister Judith distributed the rugs to when the Catholic Sisters lived in Port. Many people have been the lucky recipients of these gifts of love. This is a lady who doesn’t like idle hands. She’s always doing something whether it’s upkeep of her beautiful English Garden or making handicrafts for her family, friends and the wider community. “I just love to cheer people up”’ she says. Since she was nine years old she’s been knitting, crocheting, hand stitching and making things. A walk through her homes reveals all sorts of treasures, beautifully finely crocheted table clothes, embroidered tablecloths, doilies, crocheted rugs and pieces of knitted clothing. She loves showing us all the things she has done. She happily says “that her home really is her castle” and so she is surrounded by all the beautiful things she has made, her china ornaments and the garden she has nurtured all these years. Apart from three years of her life when she lived in Lyttelton Street Christchurch Mrs Gamble has been living in Lyttelton. She proudly tells us how much she loves the Port and its people. She’s seen many people come and go over the years, in fact now they are the only household of the original neighbours in Exeter Street from 1949! Sitting chatting to her is like a visit down memory lane for me. Her skills and talents remind me of my grandmother. Request for Light Bearers The Lyttelton Festival of Lights is coming up this week, would you like to be part of the Lyttelton Engineering Street Parade? On Friday 21 June anyone who wants to be in the parade can meet at 5.10pm in the car-park outside Kidsfirst Kindergarten, 33 Winchester Street. Get there earlier if you would like your face painted. Thanks to Busy C’s, Bethan will be offering face stencils from 4.30pm onward. The theme is Matariki, so you can wear masks as usual but also bring light - think handmade or paper lanterns to carry plus torches and camping lanterns. Rug up warm and if you can, wear some red, yellow or white. Are you coming along to the Festival of Lights Parade? Do you have some big lanterns or camping torches you can bring along? Sculpture on the Peninsula The 8th Sculpture on the Peninsula is being held this year on the 9 and 10 November at Loudon and once again we are asking the kind residents of Governors Bay to assist us with this Cholmondeley fund-raising event. Over the thirteen years this has been running we have raised over $350,000 for Cholmondeley and this year funds are needed more than ever for its rebuild. Sculpture on the Peninsula is the South Island’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and a popular biennial event, with performances by The Loons Theatre Company and a wonderful array of food as added attractions. It is run by local volunteers and organisers are looking for people to help for a two and a half hour stint with the ticket gate, food, parking, etc. It is fun and a wonderful chance to give to those less fortunate in our wider community. Lyttelton’s Retaining Walls Hill Ramblers Learn More About Historic Walls Rebuilds Two of SCIRT’s major retaining wall projects in Lyttelton have recently come to an end after months of work. An open day was held on a sunny Saturday afternoon recently on Sumner Road [Stage One – the bottom stretch up to St Davids Street] and London Street. The aim was to let locals learn a bit more about the construction of these big walls. Many local people have had little or no easy access to their cars while this work is occurring and SCIRT appreciates the efforts they have made to work around these busy sites. For some home owners, getting the retaining wall completed means they can make progress on the repair or rebuild of their homes, which is a big step forward. On both projects, SCIRT delivery teams Fulton Hogan and Fletcher have made a link to the original red rock facings which collapsed during the earthquakes all over the Port Hills. The Lyttelton walls were built by convict labour in the mid 19th century. Many of these workers were Maori protesters from the Parihaka/ Taranaki land disputes, who later died in the Lyttelton jail. Although the quakes destroyed so many of the walls, they have been widely recognised as examples of excellent workmanship. Red volcanic rock was quarried and cut by a stonemason and fitted along embankments and walls up to eight metres tall. Walls were backed with loose rubble, clay or rock. All of the displaced red rock has been safely stored by SCIRT for later reuse and replacement. Small sections of red rock have been replaced on the Sumner Road and London Street walls to provide the historical link to the walls we have lost. On Sumner Road a horizontal section runs along the bottom and on London Street, a vertical segment adjoins the existing red rock wall which has held together but is being braced and monitored and missing grout replaced. The next stage for the two SCIRT teams is to apply graffiti-proof paint to the concrete walls and move onto the next retaining wall site. A small area at the town end of the Sumner Road stage one wall will also soon be rebuilt. Art Exhibition at Godley Cafe Wednesday 19 June, 6.00pm to 9.00pm an exciting collaborative exhibition featuring: Lyttelton Ceramic Artist Jane McCulla. Originally from Northern Ireland, Jane has a list of accolades to her name. She has had her work featured in London Vogue and has exhibited throughout the UK, Ireland and NZ. Currently she is leading the community Land Art project, a tile Mandala of “Lyttel People” on Lyttelton’s Civic Square. Recently she was awarded the Decopot Premier Award at the “Canterbury Fired Up” Exhibition at the Canterbury Museum. Jane is inspired by her surroundings and her current works are very much influenced by the colours and scenery of the Banks Peninsula. Diamond Harbour Jeweller Christina Dower will also be showcasing an exquisite new range of Sterling Silver and Baltic Amber jewellery made especially for this exhibition. Christina has 25 years in the jewellery industry and her work also features at Form Gallery in Christchurch. Fiona O’Neill, owner of Resolved Gallery in Diamond Harbour, will also have a selection of works by various artists from her gallery on display. 10% of sales made on the night will be donated to the community purchase of the Alison Erickson sculpture on the point. So, come along to Godley Café on June 19th for a complimentary glass of bubbles, delicious nibbles and the chance to view and purchase some amazing pieces from our local artists. See you there!

Facilities Rebuild Plan Programme Community Forums Christchurch City Council's Facilities Rebuild Project team will hold a series of community forums during June and July to help inform residents about progress with the repair and rebuild of Council facilities across the city and Banks Peninsula. Residents are invited to attend the forums, which will include a 20 to 25 minute presentation, followed by a 50-minute open question and answer session. As well as an opportunity for residents to clarify progress on local facilities, the forums will also help the Facilities Rebuild team to identify the best ways of keeping residents up-to-date with developments in the programme. Depending on feedback received from the first forums, the format of future sessions may be adapted. It is anticipated these forums will be held quarterly. Borderline Listening Post Launch Thursday 20 June | Lyttelton Civic Square The Borderline Ballroom invites you to an exciting evening of sonic art to celebrate the official launch of the Borderline Listening Post in Lyttelton’s transitional Civic Square. Celebrations commence at 8.00pm sharp by the Listening Post for the sound installation’s resonant inauguration as part of Lyttelton's Festival of Lights. The event then shifts to the Tin Palace at 8.15pm for live performances by local artists Memory Burn, Teen Haters and Zeug Gezeugt, interspersed with the sonic component (curated by the Borderline Ballroom) of the “Illuminate” light and sound exhibition running at the gallery on evenings between 20th and 23rd June. This is a free event/donations welcome. What is the Borderline Listening Post? The Borderline Listening Post is a public sound installation in a corner of Lyttelton’s Civic Square, featuring works contributed by local, national and international sonic artists. Some have responded directly to the space, while others have been inspired from afar to create works that range from soundscapes using the local environment as their source to electronic pieces and electroacoustic compositions. It will be playing 24 hours a day from 8pm on June 20th onwards. Marlon Williams is one of these and many people are predicting a big future for this 22 year old singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Marlon is leaving us for Melbourne and, as a special farewell, the community is invited to attend a night of music and frivolity at the Yacht Club. Everyone is welcome and any person who wishes to make a musical contribution to the night is welcome to do so. The idea is we all contribute ten dollars to a fund that will allow Marlon to set himself up in Melbourne and give him the opportunity to concentrate on his musical career. What is it? :: The Bujinkan is a collection of 9 different schools
(including samurai and ninjutsu schools) which use a variety of skills, ideas and weapons to protect yourself and the people around you. Classes are taught in a safe, relaxed, friendly manner by a licensed Bujinkan instructor who has trained in several countries and travels to Japan to advance his own training. Concurrent insurance claims process and negotiation. Lyttelton Recreation Centre and Trinity Hall was designed in 1994. Recreation Centre is 15% NBS (New Building Standard) – especially the roof fixings. Trinity Hall is 11% NBS – severe structural weaknesses. Costs to repair/demolish/rebuild were covered.

Noted that Council funds have been set aside to top up insurance shortfalls. $140 million has been set aside, divided between roading/infrastructure and facilities. It is unlikely that this will be sufficient to cover all facilities and the Council will need to assess and allocate as appropriate. These funds can be used to cover the difference between the minimal 34% NBS and desired 67% NBS.

In this newsletter we would like to tell you about our campaign to help homeowners who have wood burners take responsibility for the amount of smoke they may be emitting in to the air this winter.
FAQs about Environment Canterbury’s smoky chimney campaign What is different about your approach to improving air quality this winter? We all know that we have to meet National Environmental Standards for air quality which have been set by the Government and which reflect World Health Organisation guide lines for levels of PM10.
What steps can people take to reduce the amount of smoke from their chimney? • Burn only dry seasoned wood. • Put rubbish in the bin, not on the fire. • Always burn untreated wood.
However, we also know that many of the complaints to the Pollution Hotline are about woodburners which are compliant as well those which are non-compliant. So as well as looking at the number of woodburners in the city, we need to focus on getting people to use their burner more efficiently so it is not adding pollution to the winter air.
• Don’t damp down the fire before you go to bed.
Why are you focusing on smoky chimneys?
• A low-smoke or no-smoke fire is one that is hot and burning brightly - a slow burning smouldering one produces lots of smoke. A hot fire will not only have less smoke, but will produce more heat and be more efficient.
• Smoke from home heating causes the majority of winter air pollution in Canterbury urban areas. • All chimneys make a difference to air quality. Everyone can make a difference and help clear the air. • Some people’s chimneys smoke far more than others, but many people don’t realise their chimney is smoky. • Cleaning up our air is a community effort. We can all play a part in helping our neighbours become aware of the issue and do something about it.
What do you want people who have wood burners to do? We want them to take ownership of the amount of smoke coming from their chimney. Many people whose chimney smokes a lot are not actually aware that this is happening. We want them to go outside, check out their chimney and then take steps to deal with the problem if it is smoking too much.
How do I know if my fire is burning properly? • When a fire is well underway, all you should see is a thin wisp of smoke or no smoke at all.
• Once you get the fuel right, you need to keep plenty of air moving through the fire, remember to refuel it before it goes out using wood which is dry enough and small enough to catch fire quickly. Don’t fill the fire full of big logs or it will smoulder away and smoke a lot.

What happens after the call goes to the Smoky Chimney Line? First and foremost, we want to work with homeowners to fix the problem so we reduce the amount of smoke going into the air. All households with smoky chimneys will be contacted and sent information to help them reduce their smoke.
How else will you be dealing with people with smoky chimneys? Teams of observers will be out in the evening in Christchurch from mid-June through the coldest part of the winter, looking for excessively smoking chimneys. The team will leave a leaflet in the letterbox with tips to reduce smoke. Environment Canterbury officers will try to visit all these homeowners and talk them through the issue to help find a way to stop their chimney from polluting the air. Officers will follow up these homeowners to ensure they are taking the appropriate steps.
• It is easy to do the right thing - but it takes some preparation and some work.

What should people do if they see a smoky chimney in their neighbourhood?
We will follow our usual enforcement process. To date, most people have been willing to do what is required to solve the problem without the need to issue fines.
We know people are keen to help but want an easy way to let their neighbours know there is an issue. So they can go to the website letscleartheair.co.nz where they can download a printable flier which they can drop into their neighbour’s letterbox. This lets the homeowner know their chimney is smoking too much and gives five easy tips for dealing with the problem. There are several things they can do.
