Lyttelton Main School Rebuild Community Workshop for the New Lyttelton School About fifty people and one cat attended the workshop in the Lyttelton West School Hall at 7.00pm last Thursday 29 August. The cat was gently placed outside, but the teachers, parents, three children, five Board of Trustees members, one representative from the Property Team at the Ministry of Education, the Governance Facilitator appointed by the Ministry of Health and other members of the community were seated around tables in the hall. The workshop was facilitated by Carsten Auer and Hamish Shaw, architects with the firm Architectus who are leading the Design Team for the new school. Carsten outlined the four steps in the process, namely: STEP 1: Development of the brief for the design; STEP 2: Master planning exercise to produce options/concepts from the brief and consultation process; STEP 3: Detailed design of the buildings; and finally STEP 4: Required documentation for the consent process. In formulating the brief, they had already gathered suggestions from a workshop with the teaching staff and were also going to seek feedback from the children through the classrooms. The information obtained from this workshop would be analysed along with the other feedback. This involvement with those most directly affected by the merger was a key component of the process. Large sheets of paper were placed on the tables and participants were asked to list the three best things they would like to see retained from both schools and then the three things they would most like to see changed. This resulted in a variety of ideas and suggestions which were read out by a spokesperson from each table. Common favourites were; the “enviroschool” theme; the need to design with the topography to maximise views and improve access and movement between levels; the history and connections to Rapaki and the port; the use of the “grassy” and the existing trees; and the proximity to other community facilities such as the pool. Suggestions for the new school included; a design that incorporated sustainable principles, had better views and orientation, allowed more daylight into the classrooms and included some of the principles shown in the “learning studios” at the new Clearview School in Rolleston. There were also requests for the design to include a multipurpose hall, a kitchen, space for sports such as netball, an internal courtyard and easy access to the surroundings and the swimming pool. The Board and the architects are still looking for further ideas and feedback from parents who could not attend the workshop. If you have ideas on the three things you would like to see retained and the three things you would like changed, you can write these down with your name and hand them into the respective school office. Please mark your comments for the attention of Dave Nicholl, Board of Trustees for the Lyttelton Merged School. Article: Liz Briggs, with thanks Images: Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre

Working Mens Club Lyttelton Inc August 2013 Newsletter and Update This month we have good news that the insurance claim on the Loons building has been settled after two years of wrangling. It was initially claimed that the building was a write off which we disputed but the insurance company did not do the inspections after the January and June 2011 quakes so they had to be retrospective claims and we had already done a lot of work. We have to thank the team from Duncan Cotterill, Richard, Kasey and Jonathan and the Financial Complaints Services Limited who reviewed the claim and went in to bat for us. We have now received a further $326,900 that will move the project along considerably. The other news on money is the grant application to lotteries has been successful. this is a further $60,000 which is 2/3rds of the cost for the heating and ventilation system which will go in soon after we get the building closed in. There are two new carpenters on the job now, Rob from the Waiarapa, and Brad from the Port. The fly tower and north wall are now being framed and we are working towards the building being closed in by the end of the year. More steel is arriving this week and we have all the timber that we need. As we get closer to the fit out we want to get groups and organisations to come on board and take tasks on, to arrange and fund (if possible) and install all manor of systems that now need to be in the building. Committee meetings are on the second Saturday of the month. The next is September 14th at Lyttelton Builders just behind the building at 1pm. If you can help further with the building project call Neville Walker 021 0246 3015. Any inquiries regarding the club contact Laurie Collins 027 222 3524. Classics At The Porthole Bar Welcome to the Porthole Philharmonic Anything is possible in Lyttelton. With such an eclectic bunch of residents, ideas are being hatched all the time. This one started with Porthole bar owner Mike Dungey. Mike suggested to Stephen Estall that he might like to begin a classics programme at the Porthole. Stephen’s former Volcano Radio programme, Vienna Volcano gave him the idea. The concept has been going for a couple of months now and according to Stephen he’s getting quite a following. He thinks it’s got the makings of quite a show and hopes one day the idea will be up scaled and he’ll get an even bigger audience. The show is on the second Tuesday of each month. “Each show has a theme and the next one is Lovers” Stephen said. Think of any classical music about lovers for example Romeo and Juliet, Daphnis and Chloe and there is a chance that Stephen will have some music about them. With his extensive collection of classical music you’ll be treated to quite a show. Stephen acting as the MC for the evening will entertain you with delicious music along with detailed descriptions about the works. Stephen’s love of the classics shows. He actually trained as a conductor and he even manages to weave conducting into the show. “Each evening l memorise the score of a favourite piece of music and then perform to the crowd whilst pretending the bar patrons are my orchestra” he said. “The applause at the end is marvellous” he said. The evenings are free, for young and old and you can come dressed for a night at the orchestra or however you feel. “It’s an evening of classics in a light hearted way” he said. His show recently caught the attention of Radio National Spectrum presenter Deborah Nation. If you want to know more about Stephen’s life and in particular his conducting career don’t miss Radio Nationals Spectrum programme on September 29 at 12.15pm.

Rumour Has It... Rob and Cheryl De Thier, previous owners of Super Value Woolston, are taking over the lease for the Lyttelton Supermarket building. If you happen to notice some progress going on, say hello to the crew fitting out the space as you may well be speaking to the new owners. Rob and Cheryl are well experienced supermarket operators and while they tell us an opening day is still about eight to ten weeks away, it is certainly a date worth waiting for. Watch this space and keep an eye out for updates here in the Review.

Time to Think: What If Lyttelton Design Guidelines and The Future Lyttelton Town Centre How do we allow for creativity while ensuring that the fundamentals of creating a successful environment for the community and for business are met? What are the non-negotiables to creating such a place? How do we define the qualities of a place that engender a sense of place and pride? The Lyttelton design guidelines were developed to reflect more than just how buildings in the Town Centre and Residential Conservation Zones look. People often focus on architectural style when discussing design, which can lead to heated debate. However there is a lot more to achieving a successful place than just style. Context, scale, grain, functionality and safety are all design matters that, depending upon how they are addressed in the redevelopment of private space, could have a significant impact on the quality and feel of Lyttelton. These are explained in the Lyttelton Town Centre Zone – Design Explanatory Note [refer below]. The Christchurch City Council would like to know what you think really matters in the design and redevelopment of Lyttelton town centre and the adjoining residential area, as part of review of the Lyttelton design guidelines. The District Plan Review drop-in session from 4.00 to 7.00pm on Monday 9 September at the Lyttelton Club, 23 Dublin Street is an opportunity to discuss the review with Council planners and urban designers and provide your thoughts. To get the most out of the session, you may like to take another look at the current Lyttelton design guidelines (Appendix X of the Banks Peninsula District Plan, and the Lyttelton Town Centre Zone—Design Explanatory Notes, via the following links: http://resources.ccc.govt.nz/files/AppendixX-bpdplistofpdfs.pdf http://resources.ccc.govt.nz/files/TheCouncil/policiesreportsstrategies/SuburbsRejuvenationProgramme/2013/ LytteltonMasterPlanImplementationActionB2ZoneDesignExplanatoryNote.pdf You might also find it worthwhile take a walk around and have a fresh look at your town centre and the adjoining residential area. Whatever your view about design the Council would like hear it, so that you can contribute to the review of the District Plan and Lyttelton design guidelines. Christchurch City Council Facilities Update Governors Bay Community Hall to be Demolished The Council’s Community, Recreation and Culture Committee has agreed the earthquake-damaged Governors Bay Community Hall, toilets and pottery shed at 1 Cresswell Avenue should be demolished. The recommendation to demolish does not include the historic Pierman Library, which is on the same site. If the full Council agrees to the demolition on 29 August, Council staff will continue to work with the community to look at the future of the facility. For more information about these facilities and the Council’s Facilities Rebuild Plan Programme, keep checking www.futurechristchurch.co.nz or phone 0800 800 169.

District Plan Review and Updating Lyttelton Design Guidelines Christchurch City Council recently made publicly available the Lyttelton Town Centre Zone – Design Explanatory Note. The Council had signalled it would prepare this document to assist developers. It has been informed by a post-earthquake contextual analysis of the Lyttelton Town Centre Zone and includes updated diagrams to illustrate the key design principles still relevant to development. The Design Explanatory Note is not the update of the Lyttelton design guidelines in Appendix X of the Banks Peninsula District Plan proposed by Action B2 of the Lyttelton Master Plan. It provides interim guidance to developers, the community and Council staff until the design guidelines can be updated through the District Plan Review. The Council has started the District Plan Review (a significant project with a short timeframe) with an initial earthquake recovery-focus on the following seven chapters, to be completed by 30 June 2014: Strategic directions; Residential; Business; Subdivision, development and earthworks; Natural hazards and contaminated land; Transport; and Future development areas. The Council is seeking input from the community into the District Plan and will be hosting a drop in session to obtain community input into the District Plan Review, including the update of the Lyttelton Design Guidelines. What: Drop-in session to obtain community input into the District Plan Review Where: Lyttelton Club, 23 Dublin St, Lyttelton. When: 4pm – 7pm, Monday, 9 September 2013. The Lyttelton design guidelines apply to both the Town Centre and adjoining Residential Conservation Zones and will be considered as part of the Business and Residential Chapters. Your input at this drop-in session will help determine the extent to which the design guidelines update will provide for contemporary design within Lyttelton’s historical context. If you are unable to attend the above, you can find out more about the District Plan Review at www.ccc.govt.nz/districtplanreview and have your say via an online community conversation at www.futurechristchurch.co.nz Article: Janine Sowerby, Christchurch City Council Senior Planner, Urban Design and Regeneration Unit

Grow Harbour Kids Newsletter

Newsletter - August ugust 2013

Welcome to grow Harbour kids – a network of primary and preschool kitchen gardens throughout the Harbour Basin. In this the first newsletter we’d like to share what’s going on around the harbour in our schools and highlight the amazing foundation f of food education – children growing, cooking and sharing food! Some of you may have come along to the schools Harvest Festival in April,, the beginnings of working together, which we hope to have each year to exhibit all the students hard gardening and celebrate and share together what they have achieved.

So what’s Grow Harbour Kids?

GHK’s is an initiative taken forward by

Project Lyttelton within their Harbour Resilience programme to bring food resilience to the younger and future leaders of our community.

Who’s involved? In March Project Lyttelton recruited a facilitator for the programme, myself Jacqueline Newbound, to provide support, ideas and advice to the schools and preschools in the area and to look at getting a network established across the Harbour to allow sharing of resource, expertise and ideas between the schools. In these first few months I have been working on helping establish and resource programmes within wi the schools and coordinate meetings for the early childhood centres. As spring approaches all the programmes are set to take off and we would love everyone to be involved!.

So who are the schools? (east to west) Diamond Harbour primary school

- Diamond Harbour School has been building

its school kitchen garden project over a number of years and it’s looking great with a large garden area just inside the school gate, gate compost on the go, propagation shed, garden shed all installed and chicken house but no chickens just yet. The school has for some time been cooking a healthy lunch option once a week run by dedicated volunteers and cooking in the classrooms but last term we extended this making the move into the kitchen and have h been harvesting food from the garden, preparing the food and sharing each Tuesday. Tuesday A spring launch is planned for later this term to demonstrate all that has been going on so keep an

eye out for the date. Would you be interested in coming along and volunteering

in the garden or helping the students cook? If you’re a teacher in the Harbour Basin would a time set aside to come and look at the programme be useful? Please let me know!

Diamond Harbour Play Centre - Lovely Play Centre situated just up from the Diamond Harbour ferry. The Centre is looking at re designing their outdoor area to encompass food growing throughout the area to allow the children to interact with food. Updates soon on what the proposed changes will look like!

Governors Bay Primary school - Beautiful school overlooking the harbour.

We

have been having a gardening session on a Wednesday morning and have tried our hand at cooking! The school has 4 raised beds and room in front of the class rooms to grow but looking at the fence around the school you could imagine berries a, grapes and lots more fruit trees. Could you help? Do you have access to berry canes or fruit trees?

Would you like to come along and volunteer and join in with the garden and cooking?

Chomondeley School

- A lovely school beautifully situated right next to the harbour

with very dedicated staff who are looking at lots of options for getting their gardens growing again. The fence which has been around the garden has recently been removed and the staff are now looking at what they want from their garden and how it might look. Very interested in chickens and chicken tractors.

Lyttelton Primary schools - As the Lyttelton schools are set to merge and a new building be constructed on the present site of Lyttelton Main we have set aside a space in the Lyttelton Community garden to use as a school kitchen garden and enable garden classes to continue. Lyttelton Mains Room 4 has already been up and cleared the site, laid paths, set up their own pallet seating and have put together some wonderful designs. On the old St Josephs site a very imaginative garden is underway lead by very enthusiastic and dedicated seniors and teachers at Lyttelton Main. Using kayaks as planter boxes and looking to use whatever recycled materials they can find they are going to construct a wonderfully adaptive garden ready for anything! This will be hugely important next year when the whole of Lyttelton Main relocate to the St Josephs site so we’ve going to get the garden going for everyone to enjoy. They would love any help the community can

give. Do you have something unique that could be used as planter boxes? Can you build or provide planters for them? Do you have any pots, edible cuttings or a small shed that the school could use? There’s lots of fence space

do you have anything we could use to grow plants along the fence? Please let us know!

Lyttelton pre-schools and kindergartens Busy C’s - Nestled high on the hill in Lyttelton Busy C’s is an inspiring child care centre committed to all things green. Kidsfirst Kindergarten - Terracing at its best a very garden active kindie that has recently resumed cooking at the Centre which is great news The Centres are already doing great things so we are looking to get them networked together and with the Lyttelton school reception classes to exchange ideas and possibly even have a pumpkin contest later on in the year.

So lots starting – what about you! Would you like to be involved? As spring approaches the gardens will be getting busy. Can you spare a few hours a week to volunteer in one of the programmes – no gardening knowledge required just willingness to mentor and work with children in the garden or in the kitchen. Or are you an avid grower that could donate plants or spend a few hours sharing your knowledge with the students? Or a business that could provide materials, supplies or even sponsorship. If you are please email me Jacqueline Newbound, Facilitator Grow Harbour Kids at growharbourkids@lyttelton.net.nz or contact Project Lyttelton on 03-328 9243 and we will see what can be done when a community works together!
