New Festival for Lyttelton Harbour Lyttelton Harbour Kura Festival of Learning Project Lyttelton has dreamed up the Lyttelton Harbour Kura festival of learning. For nine days, Lyttelton Harbour will become a hot spot for the sharing of skills, ideas and knowledge, as well as a lot of fun at workshops as diverse as Stilt Walking, Fermentation, Ambidextrous Drawing and FeltMaking. On offer are over 50 workshops at various locations around Lyttelton Harbour and ranging in length from full day workshops in the Community Garden or on Quail Island, to shorter one hour sessions. The festival also boasts a number of special events. We will kick off on the morning of Saturday 28th September with a “Drumathon” at Lyttelton’s transitional civic square. Bring a hand drum, or borrow one on the day, and join drum tutor Doug Brush to create a percussive feast. The following Saturday, 5th October, will see the Random Acts of Music team and Lisa Tui engage spectator participants in a co-created music event at the Lyttelton Farmers Market. Showcasing once again the inventiveness of our local community, the Lyttelton and Diamond Harbour TimeBanks will run Speed Skill Swaps, where people can come together and share skills right there and then. On Saturday October 5th and Sunday October 6th, visitors to London Street will be able to watch a selection of short films in the Picture House, a two person cinema. Films are curated by LIFT Library and include programmes on earthships, permaculture, DIY energy, money and its alternatives, transitions towns and more. The Kura is the brainchild of Nina Taylor of Project Lyttelton’s Harbour Resilience Project and Lucette Hindin, Events and Marketing CoOrdinator. Hindin says: “With so many interesting and talented people kicking about the Lyttelton area, it seemed about time we had the opportunity to celebrate and share the great knowledge and experience of the people of our area. Final Design Approved for Lyttelton’s Civic Square Last week the Christchurch City Council approved a design for the development of Lyttelton’s civic square. In the plan the town’s cenotaph is placed at the rear of the site and a waharoa (entranceway) at the corner of Canterbury and London streets. The waharoa will feature a fish hook and anchor, representing the coming together of two cultures, and earth-toned pavers in a traditional Māori weaving pattern will be used on the lower level of the site. The design includes a sheltered performance area, seats/raised planters constructed from reclaimed timbers, a grassed terrace, hand-operated pump with water flowing down a brick-lined rill referencing the historic stormwater drain beneath the site, and a public toilet. A children’s play area uses the natural slope and there is space for the St Joseph’s Church bell, if donated. Following community consultation in June 2013, a development plan for Lyttelton’s civic square site at 44 London Street was considered at the Lyttelton/Mt Herbert Community Board meeting on Thursday 22 August 2013. One hundred and forty named submissions were received during the consultation period from 10 June to 1 July 2013. Feedback from residents, businesses and other stakeholders is reflected in the plan. The design also includes three transitional projects to be relocated on the site, including a mandala artwork of ceramic tiles in the shape of ‘Lyttel’ people produced by local school children. The other works are the mosaic seat and the ‘Fifth Ship’ using the nautical flag alphabet. Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button is pleased that the civic square, one of the key action points in the Lyttelton Master Plan, is coming to fruition. “This is visible progress and will be a big boost for the Lyttelton community. The Lyttelton Master Plan was one of the first approved by the Council and I’m excited that this proposal is now about to become a reality.” Paula Smith Lyttelton/Mt Herbert Community Board Chair says this proposal is a celebration of the process and the Board’s objectives at work. “This is a true community partnership in earthquake recovery and also about rebuilding our town centre with character. The community really got behind the project and this end result is going to be a great asset, a place residents can gather and celebrate our unique port community.” Now that the plan has been approved, the next step is to develop the detailed design and a call for tenders for the construction work. Quail Island Annual Planting Programme Many Hands of Support Help Save Quail Island Since 1997 dedicated volunteers have worked to restore the native ecology of Otamahua / Quail Island. The Trust has eradicated most pest (except for mice and two recently sighted rogue rabbits) from the island and planted more than 75,000 plants as part of a planned 20-year eco-restoration project in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Ngati Wheke of Rapaki. During August 2013, the following organisations have shown their support for the great work that the Otamahua / Quail Island Ecological Trust are undertaking on the island:
Black Cat Cruises Transport to Quail Island is a large cost for the Trust so they are very grateful that Black Cat Ferries has again supported the planting season by providing free transport to get volunteers to the island over August. Providing free transport to Quail Island, for eight return trips for volunteer groups has helped to enable the trust to plant another 2629 plants on the Island.
Lyttelton Port Company A big thank you goes out to the Lyttelton Port Company for providing transport for the 3000 plants which were moved to the Island. Thankfully the weather was good this year for the project. Thank you to the volunteers who helped with shifting all the plants. What a great job done by all involved.
Honda Tree Fund Honda Tree Fund is thanked for providing $1800 towards the cost of the 2,639 plants which have gone into the ground on Quail Island during August. The volunteers, Peter, Tony and Bernice had to deal with some very cold weather during the planting.
Christchurch City Council The Trustees thank the Christchurch City Council for the donation of $8000 received under the memorandum of understanding agreement. The trust is grateful to Liz Garson, Christchurch City Council, who worked hard to secure this funding.

Volunteers And of huge importance are the Volunteer groups who contribute more than 5,600 hours annually, weeding, planting and monitoring mice traps. As the plantings mature, the island is slowly being transformed. Native bird numbers have increased as trees mature and provide more nesting sites and a more varied food source. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the planting during August. Lyttelton Time Bank Builds and Mobilises Resources University of Canterbury Research on Community Earthquake Response A University of Canterbury researcher has found the Lyttelton Time Bank was a builder and mobiliser of resources during the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Marketing lecturer Dr Lucie Ozanne says her research found a surprising partner in emergency management, a local community time bank, saying “we saw a strong role for the Lyttelton Time Bank in promoting community resiliency following the earthquakes.” A time bank is a grassroots exchange system in which members trade services non-reciprocally. This exchange model assumes that everyone has tradable skills and all labour is equal in value. One hour of any labour earns a member one time bank hour, which can be used to purchase another member’s services. Before the earthquakes struck, the Lyttelton Time Bank had organised over 10 percent of the town’s residents and 18 local organisations. It was documenting, developing and mobilising skills to solve individual and collective problems. Across the 30,000 trades before the earthquakes, a stronger social network was built through these exchanges. During the quakes, the Lyttelton Time Bank had the best local communication system through which vital information flowed to members and local residents. Using a range of communication modes, timely information was provided to residents on practical and safety precautions, as well as the availability of clean water, food, services, and other resources. Dr Ozanne says as a partner working with emergency workers and first responders, the Lyttelton Time Bank had a strong knowledge of the community. It acted as a hub organisation activating its extensive social network through which valuable resources could flow. When at-risk families and groups were identified, time bank members offered home visits, emotional support, food, accommodations and repairs. Problems were solved in the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes, such as dismantling chimneys that could be safely removed, freeing emergency workers to assist on projects that needed greater skill. Time bank members visited elderly residents providing emotional labour, which freed medical personnel to deal with more acute medical problems. After emergency personnel left the community, the time bank provided on-going support in the months and years that followed. Individual assistance continued to be provided to residents, such as helping with home repairs or finding rental accommodations when houses were deem uninhabitable. The time bank was particularly adept both working with other community organisations to solve larger community problems and harnessing human labour and resources to complete these initiatives. Research suggests that community resiliency improves when communities can quickly mobilise a range of resources. This is a real strength of the time bank model since resources are identified, developed and activated through hundreds and thousands of trades. “My research suggested the time bank model can be expanded to assist in emergency planning and management. Investments in local time banks are an economical method of building a trusted and practiced local communication infrastructure, which is critical during a crisis. Moreover, time banks currently identify and develop communities’ assets,’’ Dr Ozanne says. Rumour Has It... The Lyttelton Mt Herbert Community Board have recommend Albion Square – Ohinehouroko as the new name for the Canterbury Street and London Street civic square corner. Ohinehouroko, meaning establishment of a place of new peacefulness and also believed to be the oldest name for a pa site within the Lyttelton township area. And of recent times, Albion, in reflection of the corner building demolished after the February 2011 earthquake.
Parcel Collection Idea Do you find it difficult getting your parcels home form the Farmers Market? Can't park close enough, too far back to the car? The Lyttelton Information Centre and the Lyttelton Farmers Market are going to trial working together to solve this problem. Our idea is you shop at the farmers market and then bring your purchases to the Information Centre. We'll happily store your goods until you return later in the afternoon to collect them. We have a drop car park out the front so it will be easy for you to return and collect your things prior to 4pm. Goods stored will be your responsibility and we can't offer any refrigeration but it should be perfect for items that don't need refrigeration and many of those items are often heavy.

Local Body Elections Community Association “Meet the Candidates” Are you following the elections? How will you make an informed decision? At this critical time in the Cities history it is important that the community engage in the process, so it was exciting to see the large number of local people coming to the event. For this year’s local body elections there is a really good field of candidates standing, and for the first time in many years there is a wide range of high calibre choices. Each candidate had the opportunity to speak for three minutes, to tell us about themselves. The speaker sequence was chosen at random. Following each candidates introductory speech, questions from the floor were answered and even challenged. It was a great chance to learn about the candidates and see how they handle the spot light. Christchurch Retaining Walls Group A website has been set up as a point of contact for people in Christchurch who are having issues with retaining walls. If you would like to join the group, you can visit their web site and complete an online contact form. The only criteria for joining the group, is that you have a retaining wall of any type protecting your property, or which is your responsibility. The purpose of our group is to share information regarding EQC retaining wall settlements. Under the Earthquake Commission Act 1993 EQC are obliged to pay 'indemnity value' for retaining walls, however the Act does not define 'indemnity value' and there are several methods of calculating this - the difference between the methods can be material. Come along to a redflax recreative workshop and learn how to transform a pillowslip into a pretty dress for your little princess! Bring 2 favourite pillowslips (retro/vintage are best) and a sewing machine (if you have one – there will be some available) and get creative. Dresses can be created for girls aged 2 – 8 or 9 yrs. You don’t need to be a good sewer for this workshop - you will learn basic sewing techniques, the art of shirring, as well as making straps, and fabric yo-yos.
