Well Earned Retirement 28 Years Service to Lyttelton Civil Defence Pat Owen is a long serving Lyttelton community member. Over the years Pat has been helping this community in a variety of ways. Much of her work has been churched based. But of her non church based work, Civil Defence was an area she was most interested in. Just recently Pat retired from this role after 28 years of service in the organisation! Pat was presented with a certificate of appreciation from the Christchurch City Council Civil Defence and Emergency Management Team at the recent Harbour Basin Civil Defence Christmas function. Pat has been part of the official Civil Defence team since the unit began officially in 1985. Reflecting on her work all these years Pat said ”I have kept a letter from Sir Hamish Hay, Mayor and Chairman – Christchurch Combined District Civil Defence Committee dated 10 February 1986, thanking our church (Holy Trinity Church Lyttelton) for taking responsibility for the catering in an emergency.”

“Pat’s skills were put to the test in the February 2011 earthquake”

Over the years Pat helped collate vital information on various businesses and assets that could be useful to have in an emergency. Pat was also very skilled in catering something that she practised all the time at the then Holy Trinity Church and often for the ANZAC Day morning teas. One of Pat’s legacies to the current team is a very well organised kit for use in an emergency. Plastic containers hold stationary, task lists, job descriptions, and a myriad of things from torches to safety vests. Pat’s main role has been to head up a Welfare Centre team if needed in an emergency. Her skills were put to outstanding use for the main earthquake in February 2011. Together with Ken Maynard the pair were the main coordinators for the civil defence response in Lyttelton. They literally worked days on end to help the local community. All her years of training paid off for this event and she helped run a very well organised Welfare Centre at the Lyttelton Recreation Centre. Pat’s work has been acknowledged over the years. “About four years ago, I received the Community Service Award presented by Mayor Bob Parker, mostly for Civil Defence work and parish work. Over the years in Civil Defence I have learned much, helped lots and certainly after February 2011, felt I had actually earned my Community Service Award” she said. Pat will be a hard act to follow, so many years of volunteer service to the one organisation. Thank you Pat, from the Lyttelton community for your selfless dedication to the welfare of the local residents. Kiwi Bank Local Hero Michael Davies: Coastguard Canterbury

Residents of Christchurch got the opportunity to honour their 'local heroes' at an award ceremony held at Addington Racecourse's Legends Lounge in Christchurch.

“give thanks to those who have improved the lives of others

As part of the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards 2014, the 16 winners of the Kiwibank Local Heroes category were presented with specially made medals to officially recognise their achievements.

Christchurch MP Hon Ruth Dyson and Christchurch City Councillor, Paul Lonsdale, were on hand to present the medals and congratulate the recipients on their awards. "These fine people embody the qualities that have long held our community together. Their charity, selflessness and generosity have touched upon the lives of so many and make our community a better place to live. That's why we stand with them tonight and honour them as Christchurch's very own local heroes," Mr Lonsdale said. The recipients of the Kiwibank Local Hero Awards for Christchurch were: Ali Hughes, Anna Midgley, Elissa Smith, Emma Twaddell, Flatman, Kelly Dugan, Kevin Anthony Greene, Luke Di Somma, Lynda Butterfield, Michael Davies, Michael Peach, Nicola Hockley, Pauline Walker, Sara Sterne, Susan Robinson, and Tony Lister. Now in its fifth year, the annual Kiwibank Local Hero awards are the ultimate recognition for good deeds in the community. Each year, people in the community can nominate anyone they think has made a powerful impact on the lives of others. They may be involved in business, leadership, voluntary work, community and environmental groups, education, sporting clubs, working with the disadvantaged or have displayed courage in overcoming a personal adversity. This year, some 115 medals will be presented nationwide over the next few weeks with one national Local Heroes winner to be announced at the New Zealander of the Year Gala Awards in Auckland in February next year. Kiwibank CEO, Paul Brock, said that Kiwibank was proud to be supporting local communities celebrate their outstanding citizens over the past five years. "New Zealand has a long standing tradition of community service. It's therefore equally important that we have a tradition, like the Local Heroes awards, where we can give our thanks to those who have improved the lives of others in their communities." The national winner of the Kiwibank Local Heroes Award will be selected from three finalists, who will also attend the New Zealander of the Year Gala Awards. In December, the judging panel - comprising representatives of all the awards patrons, presenters, sponsors, community leaders and independent experts - will decide the Ten Local Heroes semi-finalists with the three finalists to be announced in the New Year.

New School Concept Released Master Plan Drawings Available for Viewing Online Links to the master plan drawings can be download at https:// sites.google.com/site/lytteltonschoolmerger/home/masterplan. The master plan is primarily about the locations of buildings and features so what you will see will be shapes representing roughly where a building would go. As we move into the detailed design phase, we will begin to see exactly what those buildings will look like. You will find two PDF drawings on the web site: a 3D view and a plan view. PLAN VIEW In this drawing, the red shapes show the location of the office, hall, library and potentially kitchen and technology spaces, while the orange shapes are teaching spaces, also called "learning commons". Learning commons will accommodate around 75 children in a modern learning environment. The two commons at the north end of the site will be on built up terraces and will be one storey buildings while the commons at the south end will be two storey. Some of the key features of this plan are the connections across the levels, shown by the black dashed lines, as well as trying to keep the outdoor play spaces at the heart of the school. Having the hall and admin block on the corner of Sumner Road and Oxford Street provides a good connection with London Street and aims to set up the hall as a key community space. We've aimed to retain the large oak tree and hope to see the entry of the school as a place where parents can gather and meet during pickups and drop offs. Note the connection onto the grassy flat, a key part of the new school. We propose to create direct access to the grassy by opening up portions of the gaol steps wall.

“plans show locations and rough shape outlines only

3D VIEW This view shows the site with a bit of depth and perspective. It's a challenging site with many changes in elevation across the area. This view gives you a better sense of the bulk and placement of the buildings. Note how there are terraces built up around the base of the gaol steps wall. In addition to the mitigation steps necessary to ensure that the wall is safe, we propose that these terraces will be built up to lessen the impact of the wall and provide some green spaces for plantings. Due to safety concerns, the children will not have access to the upper terraces. The placement of the buildings on the built up terrace further serves to lessen the impact of the wall though we need to maintain a setback from the wall to provide access. We further propose direct access to the grassy through the wall though we are still in negotiations with the Historic Places Trust and the Council as to the extent of that - there's no getting around the fact that it is a Category 1 Historic Place. Orienting the buildings in this way, particularly with the space generated next to the loess bank, provides an open space that could connect directly to the police site should it become available at a later date. We recognise that buildings and the spaces they provide are important, but not as important as what happens within them - that's about kids, and teachers, and parents and whanau. Ultimately, we are aiming to have a great new school for all the children of Lyttelton. Article and Images: Lyttelton School Merger Update, December 5 2013

Movember Month on Sumner Road Fulton Hogan Crew Support Cancer Charity Residents living on Sumner Road in Lyttelton may have noticed something different to the outfits of the Fulton Hogan crew working on the retaining wall. Over the month of November the whole team got involved for the good cause of men’s health awareness. The men let their hair down and left the shaving equipment in the cupboards to create extremely good looking moustaches. Overall the Fulton Hogan crew working on the Sumner Road retaining wall raised over $1025 for their Movember efforts. Growing a ‘mo’ is something that many men prefer to do as part of a group; being more relaxed about potentially looking a little foolish for a month. Especially crew member Mark Rogers [called Chops] with his glass half full concept got a fair few comments around the shops in Lyttelton. With some pressure on friends and families to support their moustache growth the crew managed to collect over a thousand dollars. A great effort that will contribute nicely to the global funds, last year the whole of New Zealand raised 1.6 million. This money goes towards supporting prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health initiatives. In New Zealand the funds go directly to the Mental Health Foundation and the Cancer Society. The actual moustaches were short lived though: only two crew members kept the hair growth on the upper lip. All the others, ordered by their wives and partners, shaved it off on Sunday. The Fulton Hogan crew who took part in the Movember charity include: James Herbert; Jason Wagner; Kevin Julius; Liam Lohan; Sam Gardner; Mark Rogers; Nick Willcox; Frank Prendergast; Steven Kerr and Eugene Adair who was off sick at the time of the photos. Black and White Gone The Loons Working Mens Club Progress With the bolding painted black and white facade now gone The Loons Working Mens Club is certainly looking quite humble these days. But rest assured this step represents the phenomenal progress being made by crew and volunteers of The Loons Workings Mens Club. Apparently there is going to be quite the hive of activity over the Christmas holiday period on site, so keep posted for further progress updates in the New Year. Rushani’s Cake for Greatness Acknowledging Local Volunteer: Flo McGregor For the sixth ‘Cake for Greatness’ Rushani baked a carrot and caramel cake for long time volunteer Flo McGregor. As Rushani reports: Flo is a kind woman with a loving heart and generous soul. For those with children at Lyttelton Main School, you would have no doubt seen Flo at school helping out with various activities the school holds. She herself was a past student of Lyttelton Main School, and is the grandmother of one of the senior students (standing to the left of Flo in the photo) and so has long-term connections to the school. But what makes her so worthy of a celebratory cake? It was more a case of where to start! Flo is always at the school from 9.00am to 9.30am helping the five and six year olds in Physical Education as well as special needs students. Whenever an extra pair of hands are required, Flo is happy to help, whether its helping the junior children getting dressed into their Kapa Haka uniforms, helping during Book Week, bringing flowers into the school office, sports day help - the list truly is endless. And it's not just the school that Flo helps out with, but also the Community House, Sea Cadets, Rapaki village with the elderly, the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre, plus plenty more. With just two weeks left of school, Rushani hopes this was a sweet ending to a year at Lyttelton Main School filled with love and support, all thanks to Flo. A thank you also to Liza Rossie, a teacher at Lyttelton Main School for the nomination and to Abbie Napier, a reporter from The Christchurch Mail [did you all see the front cover story?]. Rushani says she is going to squeeze in one more Cake for Greatness this year. Rushani is always eager to hear about who is in the community doing great things, so if you would like to nominate a local group of people, business or individual who deserves special recognition and a well deserved treat with their morning cuppa, send your nominations to Rushani via her Facebook page, and try to give some specific examples of community kindness/greatness/ awesomeness, where possible. Get your nominations in for a very special delivery next week, that may also feature on the television next year! You will also find Rushani at the Lyttelton Farmers Market, every second Saturday, with a range of delectable home baked treats. And stay tuned for breaking news on Rushani’s Pop Up Cake Shop under development. Rushani’s Cake for Greatness: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rushanis/222728904531644

Making a Difference Introducing Lyttelton Harbour Gift Vouchers From this December onwards, locals and those from further afield will be able to shop in the Harbour with a brand new “gift currency”, the Lyttelton Harbour Gift Vouchers. The vouchers are available for purchase in $20 denominations from the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre. They present themselves as an excellent option for Christmas, anniversary and wedding gifts, for work bonuses and leaving presents, or simply as a kind gesture that makes a difference. Recipients will be able to spend these vouchers in a number of different businesses around the Harbour. So far 29 businesses from Lyttelton, Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour have registered. The opportunity for more businesses to join is still open. Nina Taylor of Project Lyttelton says that one of the key distinctions of the Harbour Vouchers from other typical vouchers is the diversity of choice they offer to their recipients. You will be able to spend your gift at any of the lovely little stores, in restaurants, cafés or pubs, at some of the farmer’s market stalls, or use them for a pampering or handy service in the harbour. “There are a lot of options available and you are not bound to just one specific store or location to spend your vouchers in. “ The Lyttelton Harbour Voucher initiative is a collaboration between the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre, the Lyttelton Harbour Business Association and Project Lyttelton. Mrs Taylor says that the main purpose of this initiative is to strengthen the local economy and create awareness of the importance of buying locally to keep our businesses alive, vibrant and diverse. “A healthy and vibrant local economy is seen as a cornerstone of an active and resilient community. Our purchasing choices do make a difference in how well our local economies function and serves us.” Participating businesses: Bells Pharmacy Coastal Living Fisherman’s Wharf Godley Cafe Harbour Co-Op Irish Pub London St Books Antiques Roots SnoClothes Storm Hairdressers

Governors Bay Community Pool OPEN Governors Bay Community Pool is a well-loved facility. The pool is used by the school for swimming instruction during the summer. On Tuesday 2 December 2013 the facility's main pool opened for the summer 2013 -2014 season. The paddling pool will open shortly. But community volunteers are need to keep this swimming pool open. The pool is owned by the Council, but completely run by volunteers. Families are needed to volunteer with the weekly pool maintenance roster. This involves a simple water test twice daily, putting the cover on at night, vacuuming the pool at the end of the week and other basic duties. A training session in December will be organised. If you can help with the roster please contact Karen Bellamy ph: 3299 005 or email karen.tim@xtra.co.nz. Many Thanks. Article: The Bay News #65

Traffic Issues Registering Complaints with the City Council The Christchurch City Council traffic engineers would like to ensure residents are aware that if they have complaints to make about specific occurrences or issues relating to traffic, for example, speeding, parking, maintenance, noise - they should report their concerns to the Christchurch City Council main call centre 03 941 8999. When making a report, include as much detail as possible about time, location and nature of the occurrence. In this way the report will be registered and directed to the most appropriate person for action, and there will be a record of complaints about specific issues. This will give the engineers information they need to plan and undertake any remedial measures. Article: Governors Bay Community Association via The Bay News #65

Lytel Gallery December Artist: Tom McNeight Tom McNeight while not a resident of Lyttelton has had an association with Lyttelton over the years. Some of you may remember him from his stall at the Grassy Market. His work features at the Lytel Gallery from December 1 to December 29. I have worked as an artist for the previous twenty five years. Before that time I was employed as a construction labourer, chainman, deckhand, meat worker and taxi driver. Having an inquiring mind I pushed on with painting and writing in my thirties and have done ever since. I am intrigued by life and the world and I try to portray such sentiment in my work. I also try to show my deep love of the New Zealand countryside and my respect for its people. I paint in oils and acrylics. My work is very loose. I don’t concern myself with detail very much in my paintings. I believe in saying what is on my mind through my artworks as opposed to merely representing what it is I am attempting to paint. I try to express my deeper feelings and ideas regarding my life and the world. Article: Images: Artwork:

C’Mon Pick Up Your Poo! Be a Responsible Dog Owner - PLEASE All too frequently there calls for people to collect their dogs poo. Some recent calls to the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre have been highlighting the problem yet again. Please don't think because a house is unoccupied, an area is out of sight or an area not looked after that your dog can poo in the area. Some residents have even been leaving doggy bags for the poo so that people might get the message. They still don't seem to. An area of particular concern is the Lyttelton Recreational Ground. It's not ideal for sports players to have to mix with poo on the field. In one particular case a player had a small cut that got badly infected because of faeces on the ground! Where do dog owners think all this faeces goes? It goes down the drains and into the harbour, and then we wonder why the water quality isn't great. Stop and think when you are out and about. It's not that hard to collect your animals waste. Be a responsible dog owner—PLEASE.

Sumner Road Retaining Wall Repairs SCIRT Works Notice Update Stage Two Update: Stage two of the Sumner Road retaining wall project is now expected to be completed by the end of January 2014. We have installed more anchors than originally programmed to ensure the wall will be resilient during any future earthquakes. Stage Two is shown in orange in the aerial image below.

Stage three: From February 2014 work will begin on stage three of the retaining wall project, pending consents. We will update you before work begins on stage three. Stage Three is shown in Blue on the image above.

Christmas Break: From 20 December 2013 until 14 January 2014 the crew will be taking a break. During this period the site will be condensed and one traffic lane of Sumner Road will be reopened to allow residential access. Over the Christmas break, from 20 December 2013 until the week of 14 January 2014: • Sumner Road, past the containers/site office, will be open to eastbound traffic only. • Eastbound traffic will need to detour via Oxford Street, Exeter Street, St Davids Street, Stevensons Steep and Reserve Terrace. • It is not safe for a priority give way system as there is limited visibility past the containers to oncoming traffic on Sumner Road. A one-way system is the safest option.

Sound As an Ancient Healer Five weeks ago, Courtenay Stickels left her role as a community worker for Community House in Lyttelton to step into the work that really calls to her: music and healing. In 2008, after a series of powerful ceremonies in Perth, Courtenay - a singer from western Australia - attended a three day sound workshop with a well-known and respected Australian sound healer. A brief technique of singing to the body’s energetic system was taught over the space of about an hour and in that time, Courtenay felt the simple act of singing to someone’s body with clear intention and love was the deepest and most rewarding offering of sound she had ever made. The technique married her ability to sing with her love of facilitating transformation and healing in others. After 15 years of performing and recording, this was a more direct way of channelling her voice straight into the body of another - working closely with how they were responding and holding space for energy within them to shift and release. Courtenay calls these experiences ‘sound baths’ as they are a literal bathing of the body in sound and song. Five years (and several sound baths) later, she has fleshed out this technique to a full sensory experience that incorporates her voice, nine different instruments, touch and massage, essential oils and the burning of sacred wood. The intention with them is to penetrate mental chaos, deeply relax the body and activate the inner world so the recipient may have their own path/wisdom/healing revealed directly to them. Courtenay is now available to offer these sessions in a ‘sound cave’ she has set up in her home. Phone: Mobile: Web:

Port Hills Zoning Review Announced Results of the Port Hills Zoning Review announced today will give property owners certainty and provide options for people to move on from areas posing a serious risk to life, Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says. The outcome of the review of all zoned properties in the Port Hills means a change of zoning for 270 properties – with 237 going from green zone to red zone, and 33 going from red to green. Zoning in the Port Hills is based on life risk from rock roll or cliff collapse. Owners of eligible properties in the Residential Red Zone may decide to accept a Crown offer to purchase the affected properties. “I’m very conscious it has been a long and frustrating wait for Port Hills property owners to get this news, though some of the delay has been outside our control,” Mr Brownlee says. “We had to wait for clarification from the courts about our zoning process, and we needed to make absolutely sure the final zoning decisions are correct, not just for those who live in the area now, but to protect people in the future. “Some of the property owners had indicated they wanted their land zoning to change from its initial status. But many did not actively seek a review, and it is these people who may be surprised by the outcomes of today’s announcement. “Since last evening CERA has been endeavouring to call all property owners who asked for a change to their property’s zoning, or whose land zoning has changed, to advise them of the outcome, and to provide them with the best possible support and opportunities to attend face to face meetings for more information on their personal situations,” Mr Brownlee says. Of the properties that have changed in the review, nine were originally zoned red and the former owners have settled with the Crown. These former owners will have the option of purchasing back those properties from the Crown. A further nine properties that will be rezoned green were previously eligible for a Crown offer as red zone properties. The owners of these properties will be able to continue with that offer process if they choose to, despite their properties changing to be zoned green. The zoning review was undertaken by a panel led by Dr Keith Turner, who also led the panel that undertook the zoning review for the flat land in Christchurch. Mr Brownlee says CERA has produced specific information for the 44 different areas in the Port Hills that have zoning implications to make it easier for property owners to understand their own situation. Each of the 44 areas and their zoning implications are detailed at www.cera.govt.nz/port-hills with videos to explain the outcome in each of these areas. CERA has been able to proceed with the zoning review announcement after the Court of Appeal judgment released this week in regard to the legal challenge by the Quake Outcasts group.. The Court of Appeal found that CERA’s zoning process was lawful, and that the Crown needs to review any offers made to owners of uninsured properties and vacant land to ensure they are consistent with the purpose of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act – Section 3 – and in accordance with the Act – Section 10. A process for undertaking this review is being developed and until a position is settled upon the Crown is unable to make offers for these categories of land and property on the flat land and in the Port Hills. Lyttelton school merger update IN THIS ISSUE      

FROM THE APPOINTED BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE LYTTELTON MERGED SCHOOL

Kia Ora Koutou to all our families This will be our final newsletter for the year. It is a review of our work to date, as well as letting you know what is to come.

feedback and meet the needs of the children. The architects will be selected before Christmas and the Board has worked with the Ministry of Education through the selection process.

School Organisation

Architectus have been our Master Planners and have worked well with the Appointed Board to create an exciting layout for our new school. The plan mitigates the effect of the gaol steps and creates a pathway between the school and the grassy. We were pleased to share their concepts with the community last week. The plans can be found on the Merged School website https://sites.google.com/site/lytteltonsc hoolmerger/home.

Last week we shared the basic organisation of the Merged School. The Board decided that children already at school will stay on their current site and that new enrolments, apart from new entrants, will attend the campus according to the current zones. This will help us to manage class sizes. There were many factors that were instrumental to this decision including:  Feedback from parents, in conversations and also in emails and phone calls, who expressed concerns around siblings on different sites, travelling to school, and possible impact on their children  Staff input, who were mindful of meeting the needs of children by managing the amount and rate of change for the children  Discussions with Board members and Principals from merged schools in

We were all impressed with the amount of time and effort Architectus has put in to come up with workable solutions around the gaol wall. Finding a solution involved meetings with the Historic Places Trust and the Christchurch City Council. The commitment of the Board members has been impressive as they have learned new skills and worked to ensure the plans reflect community

other parts of the country who recommended that the least change until moving to the new school minimised the impact on children  The disruption for all children, and subsequent impact on their learning if there was a wholesale change  Losing the huge advantage of being a full primary school with the interaction between our children across the year levels We believe the decision to bring the new entrants together on the Hill Campus from the date of the merge allows us to develop our new school from Day One. This will also allow more space on the Town Campus, as there will be 28 Year 8s on that site in 2014.

Staffing Structure The staffing structure is designed to bring consistency across both campuses. There will be three vice principals who will have responsibilities across both campuses. These people will work to develop consistency of practice and expectations in their specific areas of Curriculum, Pastoral Care including behaviour guidance, and SENCO

LYTTELTON SCHOOL MERGER UPDATE | Issue 5 (Special Education Needs Coordinator) across all classes on both campuses. The three team leaders will have team members on both campuses and they will work with their classes to meet the needs of their students and provide support for the teachers within their team. They will also work to build relationships between their teachers and their students through shared planning and assessment as well as activities that bring the groups together to enhance the development of relationships and consistency of practice. Six classroom teachers will take the number of classes to 12 between the two campuses. Teacher aides will continue to work with specific children and ensure specific programmes continue to run. There will be two office staff, one on each campus to continue the important reception tasks, and they will also have specific roles within the school.

Other Actions  Whole School Professional Learning Development has been planned from Term 3 2014 as we prepare to move to our new school and new look classrooms built to the Modern Learning Environment (MLE) criteria  We recently held a Teacher Only Day with all staff from Lyttelton Main and Lyttelton West to decide on an overall theme for 2014 which is “Connections”  Sue Walls and Diana Feary have met with School Travel Plan personnel from the Christchurch City Council to discuss road safety issues, and possible strategies, for the children on the Town Campus in regards to access to the grassy  There has been a very productive meeting between Board representative and Rapaki as our tangata whenua to build a strong and positive relationship with the new school

TIMELINE October 2013 Diana Feary appointed as Principal Designate

 Completing the process to decide on a name for our school  Running workshops for parents, families and community in the new year to: o Develop the Vision for the new school o Contribute to and develop the School Charter o Contribute to and develop Tikanga within our school o Participate in planning workshops for the new school  Including the community in developing a positive culture for our new school by supporting activities to bring children from both campuses together  Further consultation with Rapaki

November 2013 Master Plan delivered Staff appointed for new school

Throughout our decision-making, we have endeavoured to hold a picture of what the new school will be like, and work back from there. This was one of the reasons we discounted organising the children on the two campuses according to year levels. Our children (and teachers) would have needed to adjust to not having the older or younger children on site with them, and then readjust as we came together again in our new school. It does make a significant difference to the dynamics within a school to have a narrow range of year levels on one site.

July 2014 Board of Trustee elections

We thank you for your ongoing interest and support in our new school at this exciting time and hope this newsletter outlines some of our processes and fills some of the gaps for you. We will be in touch again when we return to school in the new year.
