01 | RE-MATERIALIZING IN THE FALLOWFIELD LOOP
ACADEMIC Studio 1, 2, and 3 Manchester School of Architecture PROJECT TYPE Group Work #Post-Industrial #Wildness Landscape #Circular Strategy #Public Engagement COLLABORATORS Mangting Lyu (Group Leader) Hui Lu PROJECT LOCATION Manchester, United Kingdom PROJECT YEAR 2020-2021
PROJECT OBJECTIVE Based on the existing artistic atmosphere, publicity and materiality in the post-industrial Fallowfield Loop, we aim to combine circular strategy with crafting activities to make the improvement of the natural environment of the region a social public participation activity. In our approach, the temporary event hubs, which are spontaneously designed and constructed by people applying circular economy methods in the Secret Lake Re-materializing Workshop, can provide more flexible public space in wild natural environment. The workshop and hubs begin with people's collection and reuse of materials, and end with being dismantled and reassembled. Also, we believe this is an opportunity for the public to participate in the improvement of the Fallowfield Loop and enhance their sense of
belonging to the local area. This is also a way for people to understand natural entanglements and establish personal connections with nature in the activities of material collection and woodland management. Improving environmental conditions does not only require macro-level slogans and measures. The subtle collection and construction activities that everyone can practice in daily life can contribute to reducing carbon emissions. In this way, nature and man are regarded as a dynamic whole. The architect is no longer the one who decides everything, but the curator of public events. At the same time, architecture is no longer a kind of eternal monument, but can change with the dynamic changes of the landscape and become the recorder of the collective memory that maintains this unfinished state.

ACADEMIC Professional Studies 2 Manchester School of Architecture PROJECT TYPE #Adaptive Reuse #Heritage #Island #Landscape COLLABORATORS Mangting Lyu (Group Leader) Yimeng Zhao PROJECT LOCATION Poveglia, Italy PROJECT YEAR 2019
PROJECT OBJECTIVE The island of Poveglia sits in Northern Italy in the Venetian Lagoon that sits between the cities of Venice and Lido. Only approachable by boat, the island today is completely abandoned, isolated from the public and derelict. The history of the island as a plague field and asylum is, in a sense, the history of “the abandoned”. It is also the history of those who have been discriminated and prejudiced. Through the renovation of the existing buildings, we provide people with rich public activities, pre-intervention for psychological issues, and finally new opportunities for the scarred island. We aim to reuse the Poveglia in two different approaches. On the one hand, we make use of the architectural remains, such as the structure, layout and height of the original buildings. Then put new activities into the existing space. On the other hand,
we make use of the original positive spatial atmosphere on the island, such as light, materials and landscape to bring positive emotional experience to the visitors. As a result, the two approaches are combined to make a sensitive renovation of the old courtyard building, healing not only for people but also for the island.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE Located in a quiet valley, the Banshan Hotel is a supporting facility for the 11th Jiangsu Garden Expo. The hotel is located on the landscape axis of the Expo, facing the main exhibition hall on the south side. In this project, I collaborated with the design team to develop the concept of the hotel as a part of the terrain. I put forward the idea of placing the hotel functional area underground and connecting the upper volume with the ground as courtyards and viewing platform because I believe that as a building located in nature, it has the potential to connect the landscape and people. This idea became the basis for the project to move forward. The hotel rooms area adopts a crossshaped courtyard layout to strengthen the symmetry and guidance of the central axis. The building volume on the second floor of the hotel rooms is
located below the ground elevation, creating a semi-underground landscape courtyard. The building only exposes one storey height above the ground, reducing the impact on the surrounding mountains and forming an organic community relationship with the environment. In addition, I made test and presentation models, which not only promoted the development of the project, but also let clients clearly understand our ideas on the relationship between architecture and terrain.

04 | XUZHOU OFFICE BUILDINGS
PROFESSIONAL AZL Architects PARTICIPATION Concept Development Technical Drawing Diagram Drawing CAD Drawing Development 3D Modelling PROJECT TYPE #High-Rise #Office Building #Urban PROJECT LOCATION Xuzhou, China PROJECT YEAR 2018-2019
PROJECT OBJECTIVE The project is located in the newly planned area of Xuzhou as an office and financial district. Therefore, we aimed to connect the Dalong Lake scenic area on the south side of the site and the district through the landscape axis, so as to provide better walkability for this urban area. The four towers in the project spread out from high to low along the entire central axis, forming a unified urban interface. At the same time, the building complex becomes lower from the middle to the sides, forming a changing city skyline. There are green roof platforms at different heights of the building to provide a comfortable place for communication and rest. Together with them, the continuous sunken plazas in the building complex provide various scales for the urban space, create more public spaces and enhance the vitality of the
neighbourhood. In this project, I took an active part in reporting to the clients by drawing and displaying the analysis diagram. They easily understood our design team's idea of office building as a part of the landscape axis, and this experience also made me more confident in the later presentation. In addition, I led the research on the facade construction and ventilation methods of office building. After analysing and comparing different material choices and ventilation methods, I choose the combination of stone facade and inner casement window under the mentorship of senior architects, which satisfied the client in terms of aesthetics and cost. This experience enabled me to design efficiently and independently under tight timelines.
