CHINESE NOSTALGIC LAND
Speculative Design
In 2049, China’s Ministry of Culture announced a “Ban on Unproductive Entertainment.” This policy restricts the development of superficial and vulgar diversions in tourist areas. The intent is to promote the full integration of traditional Chinese culture into the leisure and recreation aspects of people’s lives. In response, provinces and cities nationwide are mandated to implement the strategic thinking of “Serious Transformation on Entertainment”.

A GREATER BAY AREA? 2.0: SPECULATIONS ON TECHNOLOGICALLY CONDITIONED FUTURE URBAN PUBLIC REALMS
This new policy has received a strong response from the local government of Macau, with the Chief Executive of the city declaring: “In recent years, the improvement of heritage restoration and replication techniques has consolidated the technical foundation necessary for integrating traditional serious culture with everyday leisure. As we move beyond One Country, Two Systems, Macao is entering a new era. We should vigorously implement the “Serious Transformation on Entertainment,” encouraging more people to enjoy the authenticity of traditional Chinese culture. Given Macao’s long-standing role as gateway to China, what better place than here to achieve integration of traditional Chinese culture into the diversions of life.” With that declaration, the world’s largest Chinese cultural theme park officially opened in Macau, named Chinese Nostalgic Land (CNL).
