Historic & Present Contex t

Shown below is a 19th century map of Cincinnati compared to that of today. The black areas of topography are considered “steep grade.” Through this project, our goal is to reestablish the more connected fabric of the past, shown on the left map.

ALLEYWAYS OF COMMERCE

ALLEYWAYS OF COMMERCE Professor Terry Boling 4th Year Undergrad Spring 2020

Lyceum Fellowship Competition Entr y Alleyways of Commerce was my submission for the 2020 Lyceum Fellowship Competition. The prompt was “Belt Tightening - Bungalows for a Millenial Family.” Our site was located in the Grand Crossing neighborhood of the South Side of Chicago. We were asked to rethink the post WWII bungalow and design a modern day version. Understanding the historical design context, demographics and shifting definitions of family to be more expansive and inclusive, we were asked to define, design, and deploy a new housing prototype for Chicago.

I proposed to convert the detached garages into shops, bakeries, salons, cafe’s, offices, etcetera, creating an “Alleyway of Commerce.” The Alleyway would become a lively, revenue generating machine for the neighborhood. The garages and the alleyway would be zoned for light commercial use, and vehicles would not be allowed during business hours.

E. 77th Street

Looking to the future, car ownership and use declines, the North and South running streets of the neighborhood would be converted into “Green Promenades.” These park-like spaces will allow residents to connect with nature as well as one another.

4

Future Spread

Neighboring blocks will begin to develop their own alleyways of commerce and green promenades.

5

Commercial Strip

Residents can access resources such as a grocery store, recreation center, library, as well as various shops and restaurants.

6

Cross-laminated Timber

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a prefabricated wood panel. It is made of planks of glued wood layered together perpendicularly. Lightweight yet very strong, with superior acoustic, fire, seismic, and thermal performance, CLT is also fast and easy to install, generating almost no waste on site. The proposed building is estimated to cost $230 per square foot to construct (4,665 SF total).
