LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER “As a musician, you have to keep one foot back in the past and have one foot forward into the future” - DIZZY GILLESPIE
As my family would attest, I’m not much of a musician. I do love music with a passion, though. Every chance I get, much to the amusement of staff, I turn up the volume in the office and pipe through music from around the world. I find it takes me to other places and, when it comes to designing M.J. Bale’s collections, helps me find an internal rhythm of sorts. Menswear, in particular men’s tailoring, is a lot like music. There’s a harmony and texture inherent in both forms, with the end-user hopefully finding a new and effortless
With that in mind, we’re proud to bring you our AutumnWinter 2018 collection, a range of formal (tailored) and casual (unstructured) garments to help you hit some high notes. We’ve gone deep on inspiration from the 1930s: soft flannel suits, rich navy three-pieces, grey and blue suits in Prince of Wales and windowpane checks, unstructured blazers and new velvet & corduroy jackets. In terms of coats, there are wool Crombie-style overcoats, navy trenches and soft cotton pea coats. We also have vintage knitwear inspired by our time in Valle d’Aosta, Italy, in autumnal colours of merlot, hazelnut, green and grey; we’ve likewise tweaked our chinos with a new palette.

It was a no-brainer for us to shoot this campaign in New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, and we hope you enjoy these scenes of our Australian brand in one of the world’s most unique and culturally-diverse cities. I’ve always been a fan of jazz since discovering Miles Davis and Donald Bird in my university days. The indefinable elements of the genre – hybrid styles, contrasting notes and chords, the creative tension between structure and spontaneity – is similar to the sartorial approach of a well-dressed gentleman in 2018. And much like life and dressing well, jazz teaches you to learn the rules before you can break them. Here at M.J. Bale we aim to create garments of integrity for men of character; garments that tell a coherent story and deliver our customers a sense of joy, but also help give you confidence and authority. Similar to Bach’s palindrome – melodic notes played both forwards and backwards at the same time – the role of classical menswear is to look towards the future, but also cover the past.
Keeping ahead of the easy-care evolution in tailoring, we’re also introducing a collection of high performance clothes engineered from natural fibres to enable customers to perform at their best when on the trot. Following on from last year’s ‘Coolest Suit on the Planet’ campaign, and with an objective to get Merino wool ‘next-ofskin’ and under the suit, we’re also introducing business-casual shirts made entirely of Merino wool, as well as the 100% cotton non-iron Dry’n’Fly shirts. I consider these two the ultimate shirts for the wandering hero AKA the constant traveller. We trust you like this issue of the Manual, our 10th edition. Hopefully within the pages you’ll find an insight into M.J. Bale’s spirit and wear these garments when you bring forth the music inside you. On July 5, 1981, trumpeter Miles Davis, jazz’s so-called ‘Prince of Darkness’, returned to the stage in New York after a 6-year hiatus. “Rebirth of the Cool” ran the headline in the Los Angeles Times, calling Davis’ return in New York “the most anxiously awaited event in the world of jazz.” The headline was a reference to both Davis’ 1981 comeback and his original album — Birth of the Cool — that captured his band sessions over the period 19491950. The sound Miles Davis and his eight-man ensemble ushered forth in Birth of the Cool was a more serene, unhurried and softer evolution of be-bop jazz. Whereby be-bop, as immortalised by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and saxophonist Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker, was spontaneous and up-tempo. Davis’ ‘cool’ jazz was patient, smooth and elegant. Whereas be-bop broke all the rules of jazz, Birth of the Cool re-wrote them. Similarly, M.J. Bale’s Autumn 2018 collection represents a renaissance of smooth, graceful tailoring. Labelled ‘Rebirth of the Cool’, this collection celebrates a variety of revivals: the rebirth of Australian men’s tailoring, rebirth of merino wool as a sartorial ‘total look’ (coats, suits, shirts, ties & knits) and rebirth of character — all necessary elements for the M.J. Bale man to thrive in 2018. We headed to New Orleans, USA, to shoot this campaign, because few cities represent the art of reinvention while staying in one place like the ‘Big Easy.’ They say that everything must change in order to stay the same. With that in mind, this collection is created for the man exploring the world and also evolving his own character; a man keeping abreast of the past while confidently moving forward towards his future.

HOW TO BE AN ORIGINAL While a lot of us strive in life for character and distinction, we can often end up as clones of someone else. Here is M.J. Bale’s crib sheet on how to be an original man, as mentored by jazz’s biggest legends (and old mate, Hemingway).
Nicknamed ‘Pres’, as in the ‘President of Jazz’, Lester Young was the essence of rhythm, melody and mojo. Known for his soaring solos and what Living in Jazz author, Dan Morgenstern, calls a “floating style, where he would kind of float above the rhythm”, he changed the musical landscape of jazz throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. What Lester Young had was a core individuality. He was an original. He didn’t copy anyone else. He didn’t want to be anybody else. When playing in bands it was said that he would often join in half a beat late just to remind everyone that they were on his time. “I try not to be a repeater pencil,” Young once said. “You dig? Originality’s the thing. You can have tone and technique, but without originality you ain’t really nowhere.” Easy to say, but how to do?
student relationship, Lester Young said, is that we can tend to become “copycats.” “Of course, you have to start out playing like someone else,” he said. “You have a model, or a teacher, and you learn all he can show you. But then you (need to) start playing for yourself. Show them that you’re an individual.” Or, as Charlie Parker put it: “Master your instrument. Master the music. And then forget all that bullshit and just play. KNOW WHEN NOT TO PLAY: “It has taken me all my life to learn what not to play,” said Dizzie Gillespie. This was echoed by Thelonious Monk. “Don’t play everything; let some things go by… What you don’t play can be more important than what you do.” In other words: be more flexible & less reactive. Let anger, pride and ego sometimes just pass by you.
“Master your instrument. Master the music. And then forget all that bullshit and just play.”
PLAY YOUR BARE ESSENCE: Be authentic. Be true to who you are. Play the music inside you, not somebody else’s. “Play like you play, - CHARLIE play like you think,” observed Count Basie, who, to paraphrase, noted that real innovators innovate just by being themselves. “Play the bare essence,” adds Dizzie Gillespie. “…let everything be just what it’s supposed to be.” PLAY YOUR OWN WAY: In order to mature as grounded, level-headed individuals we all need mentors, guides and educators. There comes a time, though, when we need to cut the cord. The problem with the teacher-
LISTEN UP: Duke Ellington always said that the first thing he looked for in a musician was not whether they knew how to play, but whether they knew how to listen. The art of listening is a skill we often forget. As Ernest Hemingway advised, “When people talk, listen completely. Don’t be thinking what you’re going to say. Most people never listen. Nor do they observe. You should be able to go into a room and when you come out know everything that you saw there and not only that. If that room gave you any feeling you should know exactly what it was that gave you that feeling.”

In 1938 Cab Calloway published Cab Calloway’s Cat-ologue: A Hepster’s Dictionary. Described as the “first glossary ever compiled of the colourful and unique words, phrases and expressions employed by jazz musicians”, it contained a number of mostly-forgotten (mostly) words or phrases jazz musicians use to describe men’s style and acting the dandy. Here are a few of our favourites.

Cogs (n.) - sun glasses. Creeps out like the shadow (v.) - “comes on,” but in smooth, suave, sophisticated manner. Dicty (adj.) - high-class, nifty, smart. Drape (n.) - suit of clothes, dress, costume. Dry-goods (n.) - same as drape. Duke (n.) - hand, mitt. Frisking the whiskers (v.) - what the cats do when they are warming up for a swing session or getting dressed in sharp threads. Front (n.) - a suit of clothes. Got your boots on - you know what it is all about, you are a hep cat, you are wise. Got your glasses on - you are ritzy or snooty, you fail to recognize your friends, you are up-stage. Ground grippers (n.) - new shoes. Hard (adj.) - fine, good. Ex., “That’s a hard tie you’re wearing.” Hep cat (n.) - a guy who knows all the answers. Hincty (adj.) - conceited, snooty. Hip (adj.) - wise, sophisticated, anyone with boots on. Icky (n.) - one who is not hip, a stupid person, can’t collar the jive. Jeff (n.) - a pest, a bore, an icky. Jelly (n.) - anything free, on the house. Killer-diller (n.) - a great thrill. Lead sheet (n.) - a topcoat. Orchestration (n.) - an overcoat. Sharp (adj.) - neat, smart, tricky. Ex., “That hat is sharp as a tack.” Threads (n.) - suit, dress or costume (see drape). Togged to the bricks - dressed to kill, from head to toe. Trickeration (n.) - struttin’ your stuff, muggin’ lightly and politely. Vine (n.) - a suit of clothes. Yarddog (n.) - uncouth, badly attired, unattractive male or female. Zoot (adj.) - something exaggerated (as in ‘zoot suit’).
A hybrid of styles, with its origins found in gospel, blues, spiritual, big band, classical, ragtime and African slave songs, jazz is the most mercurial of all musical genres. Like appreciation of Tao (‘the way’), it can be neither pigeon-holed as a concept nor a philosophy. “I don’t have a definition of jazz,” said Thelonious Monk. “You’re just supposed to know it when you hear it.” With that in mind, and with hundreds of classics to choose from, here are six of the top jazz albums to get you initiated with the genre. PRESERVATION SOCIETY 53 years since he first visited Preservation Hall, David Pumphrey, a partner emeritus with Heidrick & Struggles in Sydney, reflects on the iconic New Orleans venue, jazz rhythms and his signed Sweet Emma Barrett record (the one you see below).
I arrived in New Orleans in August 1965 aged 20, a wide-eyed student from St Andrews University in Scotland. Although London was a pretty lively city in the 60s, I had never been to a place quite like New Orleans. It was vibrant and robust with bars and jazz venues littered around the city, but it had a somewhat earthy and evocative feel to it. I was staying with American family friends who lived on the banks of Lake Pontchartrain. The husband of the family was a clarinet player. He played jazz and had been to Preservation Hall, on St Peter Street in the heart of the French Quarter, a number of times. He told me that Allan and Sandra Jaffe, a young American couple, had opened this jazz venue only a few years earlier with the formation of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Given it was already the coolest place in town I said without hesitation, “Well, let’s go there.”
played his trombone down the telephone. It was that type of place – just tremendously informal. Sweet Emma Barrett’s nickname was the ‘Bell Girl’ because she used to wear a red beanie and had bells on her garters, so that when she put her feet on the pedals of the piano the bells rang. Sweet Emma was one of the all-time greats. Her music was raw, but she was one of those great characters whose thumping of the piano was perfectly in sync with the tempo and rhythm of the band. She was the star. At the end of the session I bought her record and went up to the piano and she signed it for me, whereupon the others in the band followed suit. That record I purchased is the one you see here in the pages of this Manual.

Looking at the pictures M.J. Bale has taken here at Preservation Hall it’s remarkable how little the layout of the place has changed. It’s exactly as I remember it. There were just wooden benches that you sat on in a non-air-conditioned room, and no drinks were allowed. You listened to the jazz a mere six feet away from the performers and there they were, just belting it out. The audience was totally involved – very interactive, just clapping and shouting and swaying away. The only change I see is that the price for a request of the Saints is now $20. In 1965 it was $1! During my first night at Preservation Hall (I have subsequently returned four times) the band was a group of long time jazz greats who Allan Jaffe had persuaded to return to the stage after a long hiatus. It was pianist Sweet Emma Barrett’s band that had Percy Humphrey on trumpet, his brother, Willie Humphrey, on clarinet, ‘Big’ Jim Robinson on trombone, Josiah ‘Cie’ Frazier on drums, Emmanuel Sayles on banjo and Alcide ‘Slow Drag’ Pavageau on bass. Halfway through the set ‘Big’ Jim got up and went into the passage next to where we were sitting. An audience member was speaking to a friend on the phone and Jim went there and
What is the soul of New Orleans? Well, it’s very evocative in terms of mood. Take the funerals. Alcide Pavageau, the bass player, was called ‘Slow Drag’ because he was the guy who led the funeral marches. When they were walking to the cemetery to bury the person it was a moody type of rhythm that the band played. ‘Slow Drag’ slowly dragged the procession along in a solemn march. Then after the funeral the mourners turned around and danced all the way back with the band in full swing. You go from this moody, slow, reverential type of jazz on the outward journey, to this great swinging, free-flowing traditional jazz on the return. I found that sort of rhythm very haunting in terms of emotion. Jazz is one that plays on the emotions, because bands can increase tempo and rhythm and move from one situation to another according to the mood. My other great passion in life are the plays of William Shakespeare. Shakespeare never made judgements about the characters in his plays. He simply put all their strengths and weaknesses on the table, so to speak, and left it to the audience to make their own decision. Likewise, jazz musicians put in front of you all the different rhythms you can have; it’s up to you to decide which ones fit your lifestyle. I guess you could say life is about rhythms, while success is about picking the right one at the right time.

OLD SCHOOL COOL M.J. Bale’s digs in New Orleans – and the scene for many of these campaign pics – Hotel Pontchartrain is southern hospitality & old-world charm personified.
A HOTEL NAMED DESIRE The heritage 106-room, 12-storey Hotel Pontchartrain, located in New Orleans’ residential Uptown area, was built in 1927 as an apartment building. Over the years legends like Rita Hayworth, Pavarotti, President Ford, Frank Sinatra and Truman Capote all doffed their slippers here; playwright Tennessee Williams wrote A Streetcar Named Desire while staying in the hotel. REBIRTH OF THE COOL Renovated in 2016, Hotel Pontchartrain is listed as one of Travel & Leisure magazine’s top new hotels in the world. “We kept the old school vibe,” says the hotel’s General Manager, Cody Bertone. “There’s a lot of history within these walls… when you stay here you don’t need to leave the hotel to have an authentic New Orleans experience.” THE REAL DEAL “We’re a hotel where locals come,” says Bertone. “You can feel the energy on a Friday night when you’re rubbing elbows with the locals. People cut loose and enjoy it.” HIT THE CARIBBEAN ROOM Try some Mile High Pie in the hotel’s eclectic and well-patronised restaurant, the Caribbean Room. IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING The best rooms to stay are the oversized Calliope King suites. Half of the rooms overlook St Charles Avenue, making it the perfect vantage point to watch the Mardi Gras.
BEST MONTH TO COME? There is no bad time to come to the Big Easy, according to Bertone. “We turn everything into a party. We find any excuse to cook and drink. There’s nowhere else in the country, let alone the world, that you can find this bunch of eclectic people all coming together to create something special.”

GUMBO Made from stock, peppers, onions, rice, seafood (crab, shrimp) or meat with an added mystery thickener, gumbo is a staple eaten for the last 300-odd years and considered by many to be the official dish of New Orleans. PO’ BOY A shrimp-filled sandwich served on a crisp baguette, the po’ boy is eaten by everyone here in New Orleans - and we mean everyone. Great for when you’re on-the-go.

7 CRAWFISH Crawfish are the American South’s freshwater version of scampi and are caught – mostly sustainably – in the Louisiana swamps and marshes. They’re boiled with garlic, salts and spices and served in everything from soup and gumbo to spread on pizzas. You won’t miss the scent as you pound the streets – crawfish is practically on every menu, particularly between March and June when in season.

SUPERDOME: Home stadium of the New Orleans Saints NFL team and college ’Sugar Bowl’ football. With a capacity of around 73k, the Superdome is a must-visit for lovers of Colosseum-style sport.
BOURBON MULE A twist on the traditional Moscow mule, this one is made from American bourbon, fresh lime juice and ginger ale and is usually served in a copper cup to keep it cold as the witch’s proverbial. It’s refreshing as you like, particularly on a sweltering summer’s day. Also worthy of a mention is the Mint Julep cocktail.
UPTOWN: Ride a streetcar along St. Charles Avenue and take in in New Orleans’ old world charm. FRENCH QUARTER: The quintessential New Orleans experience. 300-years-old this year, the French Quarter is the city’s oldest neighbourhood and a bohemian hotspot. Take in the lively bars (avoid the more drunken touristy ones – See Hand Grenades & Hurricanes in DRINK column), street musicians, tarot card readers and poets; chill and get some sun in Louis Armstrong Park. MAGAZINE STREET: The ‘high street’ of New Orleans. Sixmiles-long, so great for those travelling with partners wanting to chill and casually shop while you scurry off to the Superdome (see above)
SAZERAC A New Orleans speciality dating back to the 19th-century, Sazerac is made from American rye whiskey (Russell’s Reserve is a fine drop), Peychaud’s bitters, Angostura bitters and a sugar cube. You can find vesions infused with absinthe if you’re lucky/unlucky.
CANAL STREET: New Orleans’ traditional ‘main street’ and good place to kick off a tour of the city. Check out the super retro Joy Theatre for live concerts. PRESERVATION HALL: Spiritual venue of traditional New Orleans jazz. See David Pumphrey’s PRESERVATION SOCIETY essay on following page for the down low. GARDEN DISTRICT: Leafy, elegant and mainly residential. The upscale Commander’s Palace on Washington Avenue does a jazz brunch every Saturday and Sunday morning from 11am. Good for a hair-of-the-dog weekend recovery session.
HAND GRENADES & HURRICANES We’re totally joking. Avoid these like the bubonic plague. These two drinks are what the tourist drunkards on Bourbon Street drink by the gallon (literally, they come served in jugs), and usually by 12pm. The names kind of say it all... are we absolutely clear on this, gentlemen?
WAREHOUSE DISTRICT: Super underdeveloped area with great energy. The new Ace hotel recently opened in the district. HOT TIN ROOF The rooftop bar of Hotel Pontchartrain (see following page). Grab a mint julep, Sazerac and/or bourbon mule and mingle with the cool crowd while you take in a cracking view of New Orleans FAULKNER HOUSE BOOKS: Former home of Nobel Prize-winning novelist William Faulkner and wellcurated book store operating as a “sanctuary for fine literature’. Located in Pirate Alley, just a couple of blocks from Café du Monde.
COFFEE Much like the rest of America, the standard of coffee in New Orleans is mercurial at best. Even in coffee shops it’s far from great (be forewarned). In saying that, Stumptown Coffee Roasters in the Ace hotel do a fine drop to perk you up from all that nasty jet lag. Grab a salted chocolate chip cookie while you’re there. Delicious.
