Kamyaran is a small city located in the western mountain range of Iran. The city is bordered by rural communities and farmland. The fundamental challenge of the peoples of small towns with agricultural careers is the dichotomy between urban and rural life. The Majority of these people have some kind of service job in the city and practice their ancestors’ occupations at the same time. They tend to desire the comfort associated with urban life in combination of the nostalgia and simplicity of countryside life. In the “Kamyaran House” project, the bipolarity of life [and, in fact, the wishes of the employer] has been the foundation of the design process.

In this sense, the project's design was guided by the following objectives:

• Arranging four patterns of rural house levels in the urban housing section based on its location

• Applying local materials to the project facade like cut-broken stones and Cheekh, a native shading

• Placing openings to create pleasant flow of the air resulting in a natural ventilation

We started the work by examining the spatial characteristics of employer's dwelling houses in the Village, and identified the basic patterns of the rural home organization.

1. Veranda: as the main space of gathering family members during the day.

2. Sanitary lay-out: People in the area insist that the toilet should be outside the residential area.

3. Yard: A space for children's play, ritual ceremonies and ancient celebrations.

4. Closet and the place of recluse: A private place for the father, facing a vast view of the agricultural lands.

By taking advantage of the project's unique location we transmitted these four main patterns to the urban home modeling.

Isfahan is located in the heart of Iran. The city may look like a mirage to those who have just crossed the country's central deserts. The city's lifeblood may be traced back to the river that gave life to it, the Zayandeh Roud . The river's vitality increases as it branches out into creeks flowing through every city neighborhood like a vein. Therefore, both river and creeks are highly valued by citizens . The project site was situated on a former garden plot at a spectacular point that Niasarm Creek gets so close to the Zayandeh Roud riverside.

Based on the particular characteristics of the project location, the following concepts were incorporated into the design:

• Division of the residential complex into two blocks in such a way that conserves most of the existing trees while providing adequate light for the apartment units.

• Taking advantage of the existing trees on the south part of the site for shades

• Double-height windows on the south side of the building to create a panoramic view of the river.

• Designing hallways that connect the apartments and facing the river, allowing for views of the water from a variety of levels and allowing the fresh air from the ZayandehRoud river flank to circulate throughout the building.

• Creating double-height balconies with the potential for tree planting for the southern units on different floors.

Final geometry

The story of entering the house is not confined to the outside–door–inside trilogy. From the tall plane tree on the creek bank, the story moves to the central yard with its old trees, which beckons the building's occupants inside. There, you'll find various bridges linking the northern and southern blocks of the project; these are extensions of the passageways that lead to the apartments on different floors. They are reminiscent of the old alleyways in Isfahan, with their large width and open views towards the river and the trees of the riverfront.

The experience is designed to give the tenant the feeling of leaving the city into a urban oasis resulting in a complicated, extended, exciting, and discoverable scenario , which is the main idea behind the houses between the river and the creek.

Forty centuries ago, Isfahan served as the Safavid Dynasty's capital city in Iran. The golden age of Islamic architecture occurred about this period. One of the most prominent architectural trends of the time was the protection of individual privacy, a value that has persisted in modern urban dwellers' attitudes toward their homes. Therefore, to protect residents' privacy, the Municipality mandated that the windows located on North, West, and East should not overlook the neighbors under the level of 1.70 (eye sight level) meters in each floors.

Due to building's open lay out, keeping the its privacy while maximizing its exposure to natural light and views was a major challenge. Brick, the material utilized in practically all of the facades in Isfahan's old city, is being employed as a skin bonded to the structure in an effort to address the challenge. The brick skin is reminiscent of a garment wrapped over the building's body.

The challenge was to design a commercial-office complex to be built on a vacant plot in front of western side of the Laleh Park in the capital city of Iran. The Park is one of Tehran's major public green spaces, serving as a cultural and recreational hub for the city. It houses the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Carpet Museum of Iran.

There are some architecturally valuable buildings in every city. This value could be employed by local architects to design and form their buildings to create a city with harmony in the form of buildings . We called this design architecture a cultural hub , and it is defining the architectural identity of a neighborhood . Thus, in this project, the formal identity of the “Tehran Museum Of Contemporary Arts” which was located in the vicinity of the site, was employed as the basic elements of form finding.

We applied this concept to address further project challenges to achieve the following project objectives.

• Modifying the building orientation from main crowded streets to Laleh park by modular arrangements of forms

• Using movable, translucent concrete panels to filter off western sunlight

• Defining two kinds of balcony:

• Tiny terrace: A small terrace for short breaks like a short call or relaxing in every office units

• Refresh zone: A large open space for long breaks and social interactions in every story.

The region of northern Iran, bounded by the Alborz Mountain Range and the Caspian Sea, is well-known for its extraordinary natural beauty. The lush Alborz Mountains may be admired alongside the boundless ocean. Therefore, The primary destination for domestic tourists is this region, especially those living in the nation's capital, who often rent villas to spend the weekends and vacations in tranquility.

The main goal of the project was to build a residential-recreational complex that offers its residents an extraordinary lifestyle and experience . Owing to the unique site proportions, we were able to create an introvert spiral green ramp with a gentle slope for walking and bicycling on various levels. Additionally, this ramp allowed both vertical and horizontal connections between the different parts of the complex. Along with the green Ramp, large public green traces were designed on various floors to not only provide residents with a unique open space for relaxing and interacting but also to create gaps in the building's volume, thereby enhancing natural ventilation and granting apartment units a more expansive view of the surrounding mountain and sea . In addition to the these public traces, a small green traces were designed for each unit to create an active and dynamic private spaces in different hours of the day for all the family members.

MASTER’S DEGREE DESIGN STUDI O

Rescaldina is a small town in the Lombardy region of Italy. Rescaldina's local administration wanted to modernize the library due to its age. Thus, the project sought to transform the existing Rescaldina Library into a new student home , increase the building's energy efficiency, and design a new structure as an extension of the building (Parasite Architecture). In this case, the building's structure was kept intact but the envelope and floor plan were changed to accommodate the new function and reduce energy consumption by altering the building's exterior, roof, and floor details and employing Passive Design Strategies . In addition, construction and architectural issues posed by the addition of Parasite Architecture to the building had to be resolved as part of the project.

Based on the orientation and the climate of the Rescaldina, we redesigned the Library to reduce its energy consumption. The innovation we used to achieve this goal was:

• Distribution of greenhouses in different parts of the building to harvest solar heating in the winter.

• Designing the new facade and windows to optimize the solar radiation during the summer and winter and equipping different elements of the building (roof, walls, floor, etc.) with appropriate isolation.

• Improvement of internal lighting in areas near the north façade with the installation of ceiling openings

• Distributing the various functions of the student’s residence in different parts of the building based on their needs for cooling or heating during the day and night (service and servant area).

• Employing an organic form to connect the various elements of the building and control the amount of light radiating through the windows.

We used Dial+ software to analyze the energy usage of the building. As a result, the heating demand of the building was reduced by 90%, and the cooling demand by 80%.

The project is situated on the outskirts of the old city of Yazd, Iran (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), next to the Baghe Dolat Abad, a historical garden and landmark in Yazd and inside the buffer and protected zones defined by UNESCO. The garden is separated from the project site by a waterway.

The project aims to create a new housing complex following UNESCO’s buffer zone rules, to enhance and re-qualify the current urban context in addition to the condition of the protected zone’s historical monument. The project addresses the theme of habitat in a wider sense, deepening the contents of various scales involved, from the reconfiguration of the urban context, that is in the relationship with the infrastructures and open/public spaces, to Architecture and constructive details.

The project proposes novel morphological and topological innovations based on an in-depth analysis of traditional existing morphology and typologies of private/ public buildings and environmental factors.
