The national, regional and local significance of the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area (WHRA) has been recognised by the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area Act 2008, which seeks to promote the protection and enhancement of the heritage features of the area for present and future generations.

The heritage features include: • The terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of prominent indigenous character • The different classes of natural landforms and landscapes • The coastal areas • The natural functioning streams of the eastern foothills • The quietness and darkness of the Waitakere Ranges and coastal parts of the area • The visual backdrop to the
