Bound by trust
Dear Customers, colleagues and partners, in 2008 the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group was blessed to realize a total of 138 ropeway projects with 120 customers. We would like to thank our customers and business partners for this trust in us and the co-operation. We do not take this co-operation and partnership for granted. On the contrary, it must be fostered constantly and confirmed by extraordinary performance. You, our estimated customers, help us to achieve successful projects with your creative ideas and suggestions. This trust is the basis for the lived partnership and the foundation of our common success. In the last year, we were able – by the way, still as the only ropeway manufacturer worldwide – to realize all types of ropeway systems from the surface lift to the 3S installation. Let it be the first mobile surface lift in Steibis, Germany; the world-record 3S lift “Peak 2 Peak“ in Whistler Mountain, Canada; the world‘s first chairlift with chairs that can be used by 7 children and only one accompanying adult in Serfaus, Austria or the first of four planned urban gondolas in Algeria. Thanks to this, we were able to confirm our position as market leader worldwide and even expand it.
In the future, we will as well concentrate on our core competences and give our best to build the best ropeways in the world. Absolute focus on quality, constant innovation, competence and partnerships based on trust are the pillars of our business culture and therefore lived reality every single day. Our most sincere gratitude goes to our customers, employees and partners for their trust. You have contributed to our success to a considerable extent.
Michael Doppelmayr Werner Inderbitzin Hanno Ulmer

The Harderbahn, which already featured an electric drive when the lift first opened in 1908, runs from Interlaken to Harder Kulm. Even that long ago, care was taken to preserve the natural landscape when planning the lift line. The route traces an arc to avoid having to cut a path through the forest. Two completely new panorama carriers were installed to coincide with the lift’s centenary. These cabins are in the traditional red of the Harderbahn and offer passengers enhanced comfort as well as a fantastic view thanks to the panorama windows in the roof. In addition, the electric control system was upgraded in line with the new configuration.

Reversible aerial ropeways
Jackson Hole in the State of Wyoming is a valley carved deep into the Rocky Mountains. Most of the valley belongs to the Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is one of the most well-known skiing and hiking regions in the USA. One of the region’s emblems is the “red box” – an aerial tramway dating from 1966 – which has now been completely rebuilt. The new installation with 100-passenger cabins replaces the iconic tram, which last carried 52 passengers in the winter and 45 in the summer season, and had less than half the transport capacity (300 passengers) of the new tram.

A special feature of the tram design is the integrated rescue system, which made it possible to dispense with a separate rescue ropeway. The rope guidance system in the terminals is based on a “fail-and-save” principle, ensuring that the cabins can always be run back to the terminals or the nearest rope-down rescue point.

24-FUN Gletscherbus 1 Zillertaler Gletscherbahn GmbH & Co KG Hintertux, Austria
Hintertux is the only ski region worldwide with a three-section Funitel system. The latest Funitel, Gletscherbus 1, went into service in November 2008. The three sections now lead from the base station in Hintertux (1,500 m) to Sommerbergalm (2,100 m), Fernerhaus (2,660 m) and Gefrorene Wand at an altitude of 3,250 m, covering a total length of 5,538 m. The desire for comfort, operational reliability and the best in ropeway engineering is the key factor which inspired the construction of the first two sections (Gletscherbus 2 and Gletscherbus 3) in 1996 and 1999 respectively. The crucial argument in favor of using the Funitel technology is always the system‘s wind stability. Hintertux lies right in the path of the “föhn“ wind and is consequently exposed to high wind speeds. It is therefore essential to ensure that passengers can be brought back safely from the glacier even under adverse weather conditions.

Gletscherbus 1 is equipped with 24 CWA cabins and achieves a transport capacity of 3,200 passengers an hour each way at its maximum speed of 6 m/s.

3S ropeway
Whistler Mountain, one of the biggest, most well-known ski regions in North America and venue for the Alpine competitions of the 2010 Winter Olympics, celebrated the opening of its Peak 2 Peak Gondola and the world’s longest 3S lift on December 12, 2008. The 3S lift links the two ski mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb. With a maximum speed of 7.5 m/s (= 27 km/h), the lift crosses the Fitzsimmons Valley in just 11 minutes. In the past, skiers were very hard pressed to ski both mountains in one day. Thanks to this convenient connection, however, this is an experience that guests can now enjoy to the full.

With an overall length of 4.4 km, the world’s longest rope span of 3,024 m and a maximum height above ground of 436 m, the Peak 2 Peak breaks all the records for an aerial ropeway of its kind. Up to 2,050 passengers per hour can be transported in each direction with the 28 gondolas. Each cabin is designed to carry 28 people (24 seated, 4 standing) and offers the guest an unforgettable ride experience. The Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group remains the only ropeway manufacturer worldwide to have implemented this modern lift system.

The new “Parsenn combined lift in the Heuberg Arena, Kleinwalsertal, is the first of its type in Vorarlberg. It replaces a surface lift built in 1968 which at approximately 1,350 m in length once ranked among the longest in the world. The modern combined lift with quad chairs (45) and 8-seater gondolas (15) uses a 3:1 carrier mix and marks another leap in quality for this popular ski resort. For ski schools and families in particular, it represents a vast improvement in comfort and safety.

Constantine is the first of four Algerian cities to have a detachable 15-passenger gondola lift built for urban transport. Three more are to follow. The lift (2 sections) is fully integrated into the public transport network in Constantine where it acts as a feeder, bringing commuters from residential areas to the city center (mid station) and commercial areas. This lift is extremely popular and carries around 15,000 passengers on a daily basis, operating from 6 am to 10 pm. The urban transport company which runs the local buses, Enterprise de Transport Constantine (ETC), is also responsible for operating the city’s lift. The huge time saving over the bus or the car and the low emissions are just two benefits which make the gondola lift an excellent alternative for urban transit applications.

Doppelmayr built Poland’s first 8-MGD in the Giant Mountains, not far from the city of Świeradów-Zdrój. Nestled between the borders of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, the spa town of Świeradów-Zdrój is a popular health and ski resort. Construction of the new 8-seater gondola lift to the nearby Stóg Izerski, the 1,107 m “Heufuder”, not only increases the appeal of the popular hiking region but also opens up a new skiing area. Sobiesław Zasada, the investor and owner of the conglomerate Sobiesław Zasada AG, has set itself the goal of making sure its ski resort offers optimal comfort and state-of-the-art equipment.

The particular importance of the SkiWeltbahn is that it links up with the Westendorf Choralmbahn. This means that the entire SkiWelt now forms a consistent network for the first time and the foundation has been laid for creating the world’s third biggest interconnected ski area.
Vertical rise Inclined length Speed Capacity
The new station of the SkiWeltbahn lies directly on the main road opposite the bottom station of the Hochbrixen lift, a 6-MGD from Doppelmayr built in 1986. These two buildings are linked by a new pedestrian bridge over the busy major road, which provides safe and convenient access for skiers. This quantum leap in terms of convenience won the region highly acclaimed recognition: the hard-to-win title of “Best European Resort Development” awarded by the London-based “Where to Ski & Snowboard Guide”.

8-CLD-B-S Familienbahn Gampen Seilbahn Komperdell GmbH Serfaus, Austria
Serfaus is part of the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area and has long been known as a family and child-friendly ski resort. A new milestone was set with the installation of the Gampen lift in 2008: It is the only chairlift approved for carrying seven children of 90 cm body height and above with just one accompanying adult. In particular, this significantly lightens the load for ski schools. The approval was achieved through a whole series of measures such as double restraining bar, special seat divisions, newly designed safety handles (Skippies), automatic opening and closing of the restraining bar as well as low transit speed in the loading and unloading areas. Since it opened, the Gampen 8-CLD-B family lift, which can carry 3,000 passengers/hour, has met with an enthusiastic response from families, children and ski schools.

The new 8-seater chairlift with orange bubbles went in to service on the Giggijoch at the start of the winter season 2008/09. It replaces a fixed-grip triple chairlift built in 1982 and is not only an eye-catcher thanks to its orange bubbles, but also plays a major role in helping to disperse concentrations of skiers and consequently in enhancing the attractiveness of the ski slopes in this sector. With orange bubbles and comfort upholstery, the new lift offers everything the modern skier’s heart desires. And it has already been given two nicknames: some call it the “Dutch lift”, others refer to it as the “orange taxi”.

The Lipno ski region in the southwest of the Czech Republic lies close to the Šumava National Park which also extends beyond the Czech border into Austria and Germany. The three new quad chairlifts Lipno Expres, Promenádní and Střecha are all equipped with the Doppelmayr Chairdrive. Numerous other projects were completed as part of a general upgrade of the ski resort in 2008 and have made Lipno into a modern family-oriented ski region. The generously dimensioned “Fox Park” for children and the modern fun sport area are further examples of the extensive refurbishment.

“Mobile” surface lift in Steibis! Imbergbahn & Skiarena Steibis in Bavaria’s Allgäu region can now boast yet another attraction. The platter lift known as the Imbi-Sonnenlift went into operation in the “Kinderland” section in the 2008/09 winter season. The special feature of this lift is that it was designed with “mobile” steel and concrete foundations that are not fixed in the ground. Specially developed for small ski areas and special applications, this is a surface lift which is extremely flexible and can be installed rapidly and even temporarily. The Imbi-Sonnenlift is approximately 200 m long and transports up to 500 passengers per hour.

RPC RopeCon® Simberi Allied Gold Limited Papua New Guinea
The Australian company Allied Gold mines gold ore on the small, remote island of Simberi*, 250 kilometers south of the Equator. No infrastructure existed for transporting the gold ore from the Sorowar mine down through the impenetrable tropical rain forest to the coast. As there would be no point in building a road in view of the excessive downpours which would simply wash it away, the RopeCon® provided the ideal solution.

With just 3 tower structures, the installation could be optimally incorporated into the untouched landscape and covers a length of 2.7 km. The 220 kW of electrical power generated thanks to the gradient are utilized by the gold refinery. This further reduces the already low running costs of the RopeCon®, providing an additional benefit for the customer. * 80 km² island belonging to the Tabar group in Papua New Guinea

CLS MGM CityCenter Shuttle MGM Mirage Design Group Las Vegas, USA
The fifth APM (Automated People Mover) system from DCC, which has been built for the MGM CityCenter in Las Vegas, is to go into operation in November 2009. With a transport capacity of 3,000 passengers per hour and direction, this APM represents a major part of MGM’s 7-billion-dollar mega project. The 650 m long system connects an intermediate station at the new CityCenter Hotel Resort with the existing Bellagio and Monte Carlo hotels. The new APM system is elevated at a height of 25 m above the ground, giving passengers a fantastic view and providing an impressive demonstration of the benefits of rope-propelled systems for urban applications. The CityCenter APM is already the second DCC system in Las Vegas. The extremely light trains from DCC run on a specially prefabricated guideway, which reduces the time required for installing the system and also addresses ecological considerations. Covering an area of 265,000 m², the construction site has proved to be one of the biggest challenges which DCC has ever had to master.
