Hunting in Unit 66
Colorado Unit 66 is renowned for its diverse wildlife and excellent hunting opportunities. Tags and Licensing
To hunt in Unit 66, hunters must participate in Colorado’s draw system for big game licenses. The application period for the draw typically opens in early March and closes in early April. Hunters can apply for licenses online through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) website or by phone. It’s crucial to apply during this period as tags are allocated based on a lottery system, with preference points playing a significant role in the chances of drawing a tag. • Elk Tags: Unit 66 is known for its over-the-counter (OTC) bull elk tags during the second and third rifle seasons, making it accessible to a broader range of hunters. However, cow elk tags and archery tags typically require participation in the draw.
• Mule Deer Tags: Mule deer tags for Unit 66 are available only through the draw system. This unit is highly sought after due to the quality of the mule deer population, so obtaining a tag can be competitive.
• Black Bear Tags: Black bear licenses are also available through the draw, with some tags offered OTC during certain seasons.
