specialty tea house Quirky design entirely inspired by the beautifully crafted clayanimated film: “Mary and Max.” It is this story of an unexpected friendship which inspired unexpected elements of the tea house design. Max’s life in New York is portrayed in black and white and Mary’s life in Melbourne, Australia shown in sepia tones. The unifying color is red. project duration: four weeks square footage: 4480

Tea House chosen as type of restaurant to design for a few reasons: Mary’s father worked at a teabag factory and Mary loved the name ‘Earl Grey’ so much she dreamed about marrying a man with that name. The clay animation aspect of the film drove my design to feel sculpted by using uniquely shaped molded materials and furnishings. Classical tunes throughout the film inspired the piano lounge to greet guests as it was placed near the front entry. An aviary lounge was placed near the back patio doorway as both characters had unique pets - Mary: rooster named Ethel Max: a parrot, a goldfish, and a one-eyed cat. Images from maryandmax.com
