Palma Areca No 6: Precedents and Intentions Casa 1000 is a residential project I designed in 2007 in Cancun, Mexico. It served as the design precedent for a house I later designed and built called Palma Areca No 6. Though the projects differ in size and audience, the core idea for both projects is the same: a sober architecture that uses local materials, available construction methods and favors cross-ventilation. Palma Areca No. 6 is a single family house located in one of the Cancun’s new suburbs towards the southeast of the city. This suburb, known colloquially as “Colegios” for its close proximity to multiple schools, has ignited a real estate boom among young families and professionals. The Palma Areca No. 6 house was built in 2013 using concrete block masonry bearing walls and a semi-prefabricated concrete slab system. As in Casa 1000, the design’s intent is to produce a simple yet beautiful architecture using local materials. An example of this idea is the use of machiche hardwood in elements like the garage, pergola and balcony railings; and sascab, the characteristic, almost white, sand of the area, which creates a fine mortar applied to all exterior walls.
