MASTER

CHOI JUNG HWA

A Man On A Moral Mission

By Matthew Sylvester

Part 3

In the previous two articles Master Choi spoke about his childhood, his relationship with his father and the art of Taekwondo. In this, the final part of this interview series, Master Choi speaks about society and the moral duty martial artists have. The Moral Crusade has begun There’s no denying that society the world over, but especially in Britain, seems to be in meltdown. Not a day goes by without some child being kidnapped, abused or bullied (physically, online, over their phone or a mixture of all three). We are facing a greater terrorist threat now than we have for a long time. Finally, people as a whole either don’t seem to care, or are then attacked for seeming to care. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your views) the Church is no longer the guiding force it used to be, youth

6 TKD/KMA WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK

groups such as the Brownies, Guides, Cubs and Scouts all seem to be losing out as the apathy spreads and more children stay at home playing computer games or glued to a computer screen. Role in so society One area that is experiencing massive growth is martial arts. Martial arts have been cited as being the largest participation sport (after football) in the United Kingdom. Master Choi firmly believes that martial arts can be used as a positive force for moral and social change.

We initially talked about how he would like to see people view Taekwondo in the future. Master Choi would like to see Taekwondo playing a bigger role in society, bringing more education to families; “As we progress more in the material world, I think we are losing much of the morality as human beings. I think TKD can substitute that loss.” During his opening speech to the attendees of the weekend seminar, Master Choi stated that the ITF were the guardians of Taekwondo and that nothing should be changed within the system.

This included the patterns as well as normal techniques. Obviously such a statement has ramifications, the biggest being the possibility of Taekwondo stagnating. I asked Master Choi how he saw Taekwondo progressing if his intention was to preserve Taekwondo as a system rather than as a concept. “Much of the technical aspect that we practice has been completed by General Choi. There are confusing aspects of Taekwondo that need to be clarified which is what I mean by improvement. I remember General Choi said ‘I have barely had time to teach technique to my students, to teach morality takes a long time, I hope our sons can finish the job for me’. In other words General Choi’s time was [based on] more physical teaching and our time is more moral. By becoming good examples, becoming good brothers and sisters so we can imbue more morality, explain [morality] and also become part of the learning process of morality. I hope we can achieve it, I’m sure we will.”

about black belt it means a person who knows many and much, a made person. Their duty to this society is very heavy and very deep. Unfortunately a lot of people only take the sensational part of Taekwondo and do not give to society what is needed.” Sensationalisation of Taekwondo Is it fair to blame people for the sensationalisation of Taekwondo however?

Taekwondo and martial arts in general are sensational to an unknowing public and as with the case in sparring, discussed in the previous article, Taekwondo has concentrated on this due to what could be called a lack of leadership. Master Choi believes that this is because Taekwondo is taught by instructors rather than teachers. To read the rest of this article pick up a copy of Combat magazine available from WH Smith and all good newsagents.

Black Belts There is a certain perception that the general public has with regard to black belts. That perception seems to be that they are immediately bestowed with greater wisdom, patience and almost superhuman abilities as soon as they wrap the often coveted belt around their waist. Black belts become not only invincible in battle but also seem to become the equivalent of knights of the round table. Students quite literally hang on every word that they utter, often to the point where they ignore commonsense. Master Choi is of the opinion that; “The white belt represents innocence, not knowing anything. When we talk WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK TKD/KMA 7

A pre event interview with Master

Kytu Dang By Kevin Jervis

Europe’s first WTF World Poomsae Champion! Kytu, thank you for agreeing to be interviewed at this time when I am aware that you need to be focussed on competing tomorrow in your category here in Incheon at The Second World Poomsae Championships. That’s fine. Actually I have already completed all of my preparations for this event so I am more than happy to share my thoughts with you. Before I talk about this competition I am sure that people would want to know a little bit more about you. I am aware that you currently hold the rank of 7th Dan. How long have you held this rank? I tested for 7th Dan back in 2002. What did that involve? Well basically everything physically. I also wrote an essay about the biomechanical movements of Taekwondo and the effect Taekwondo can have on a player’s relationship with friends and family, especially since Taekwondo became an Olympic sport. Sound and healthy training can be accomplished by utilising correctly executed movements and it is very important that players adequately balance their training requirements while ensuring healthy relationships with those close to them. If players get this right, they can make their relationship with others much stronger. Not too much or too little. It is important to get this balance spot on, especially for the elite Kyorugi players who can become isolated within what I would call the Taekwondo Society. They must be aware of it and there is a need for such players to socialise more in everyday life because Kyorugi players cannot compete all their life. It will suddenly come to an abrupt halt. Is that why Poomsae competition interests you the way it does? Most definitely. In Poomsae, competitors have a much 10 TKD/KMA WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK

wider age span. It is possible to compete from a very young age right up to when for example a business man is retiring as a manager. Everyone can compete. Poomsae doesn’t require the same level of commitment as Kyorugi and players don’t suffer from the same type of injuries which may hamper a competitor’s ability to even train. Also in Poomsae it is easier to work, compete and sustain good relationships with your family while still having fun. The mentality of people in Kyorugi and Poomsae is also totally different. In what way? In Kyorugi, players want to beat even hurt their opponent but in Poomsae, even though players are competing against each other, it is not possible to be involved in any dirty tricks. That way no one is disliked by their opponent and no one becomes offended. Also in reality, in Poomsae competition you are only really competing against yourself. It is also very easy to make lasting friendships with people you compete against. Is that the same internationally? Yes. For instance, players from Denmark like to compete internationally not to just pit their skills against foreign competitors but to also meet up with friends that we have made over many years on the international circuit. These friendships continue to grow as a result of this. When will you be eligible for 8th Dan? It will be possible for me in 2009 so I am already beginning to prepare my essay subject. Would it be possible for you to give us an insight into what you are planning in respect of this? I have produced a Taekwondo 3D instruction training program so people can view it on a computer. As part of this I have been working with electronic body protection equipment

companies. I have gained a lot of experience by doing this which will be included in my essay. It will cover such things as the advantages and disadvantages of using the electronic scoring system in competitions, training and coaching. Who tested you for 7th Dan? Master Choi Kyong An 9th Dan from Denmark. He is the master who recommended me although I actually took the examination in Korea. Have you ever competed in Kyorugi? Yes. I was in the Danish national team from 1976 until 1986. During this time I was the undefeated Danish Champion. I competed in my first world championship in 1977 in Chicago and made it to the semi final only loosing out to Chinese Taipei. I was only 14 years old at the time. I also fought in many other international tournaments in countries such as Germany, Holland and Turkey where I won a gold medal in the early eighties. Where were you born? I was born in Saigon, Vietnam. I left there as a refugee in a boat and went straight to Hong Kong where I lived for 4 months. I went from there to Denmark in 1975. Why Denmark? It was an accident really. I had family in France and America but these countries were not taking refugees in. I applied for Denmark and the USA but Denmark came first to collect us. It was a Danish merchant ship. They had to have

permission to collect us and we were the first refugees to go to Denmark. My mother and older brother were in France before the Vietnam War ended in 1975. She was working there as an officer in the Vietnamese Embassy so she was already out of the country. I left Vietnam together with my dad, my two sisters and my younger brother. It was the biggest rescue ever as there were around 3500 refugees on the boat. We had to change to another ship as it nearly sunk with all the extra weight. When did you begin your Taekwondo training? In Vietnam in 1973. You are the current WTF World Poomsae Silver Medallist having taken part in the first World Championships last year. You are obviously here to compete for the Gold Medal this time. What have you been doing to improve your performance? Trying to do what Korea wants us to do by performing the Poomsae slower with less power and less rhythm. Do you find that difficult? No, but a little boring. I don’t want to offend anyone but in my opinion I do not think this is the way to display Poomsae. Poomsae is fighting with an imaginary opponent but it is not fighting when we perform it in this way. Do you run a club in Denmark? Yes but my students more or less run it for me so I can spend more time training and being with my family. Have you taken many people to black belt? I would estimate I have personally taught 400 to 500 students who have gone on to gain black belt status. That is because I also have clubs in Norway, Portugal, Poland, Australia and Germany. What advice would you give to National level competitors who wish to do well at these world level competitions? I don’t want to be disrespectful to the WTF so I hope this comment is taken as constructive criticism but it is currently difficult for top class competitors to remain focussed and motivated because the WTF are not clear enough about what is required for a winning performance. Information given is often changed at a later stage. The only way to prepare for events such as these world championships is to practise your Poomsae using several different styles and to be flexible enough on the day to change your style to meet the judges’ requirements. I will be prepared to do this tomorrow but I find it unacceptable at this level. I like to see a Poomsae practised and performed as a complete piece of art not just one single move followed by another. It should be compared with someone telling a story with passion with your own personality as opposed to just reading it straight out of a book.

Master

VOHRA a first class instructor

In our last interview we covered how Master Vohra became the highest ranked official WTF Taekwondo Master in the United Kingdom. Not only is he officially the highest ranked WTF 8th Dan in the United Kingdom, but he’s also the country’s only 1st Class instructor. July was a truly unique month for him as he first qualified as an 8th Dan and then went straight through to his 1st Class Instructor’s course. The regime that he had to follow whilst on the course was very regimented indeed. Doboks had to be worn at all times, whether or not they were physically training or in the classroom and they were expected to sit up straight and stand whenever an instructor or lecturer entered the room. So strict was this regime that the students were given press-ups if they were late. Anyone who failed to follow the rules was told that they could either follow the rules or go home. Master Vohra has given Taekwondo & Korean Martial Arts magazine an exclusive insight as to what the now tried and tested course actually consists of. “Every day in the course started at 0830 and then ran through to 18:00. We were then expected to self-study from 1800 onwards.” The week started with all of the students present (over 100) submitting all of the relevant documents along with the $200 registration fee. Considering that this is a five-day course taught by some of the highest ranking officials in the Kukkiwon and WTF, $200 for such training is an amazing deal. Included in this price were the textbooks that all students were expected to read and make notes in. Kim Byung-un was their first lecturer

14 TKD/KMA WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK

and he more than set the tone for the rest of the course. “He explained the general format as to how things operated and gave a two hour lecture on the Kukkiwon and how it operates. No matter what grade the students were, Kim Byun-un explained that the Kukkiwon is solely responsible for the development of Taekwondo as well as the certification of all black belts. He went on to explain that the WTF was solely the sport section. With this in mind, he explained how Taekwondo is a complete martial art and not just a sport. Tae is 25% Kwon is 25% and Do is 50%. If we’re looking at examining someone we have to look at the ‘Do’ over the plain kicking and punching.” The course instructors also made sure that everyone present was able to cover the full martial art rather than one specific aspect. Basic movements were taught in the dojang by Lee Jong-Kwan. “He was kind enough to have given us private training for my 8th Dan the week before. Mr Noh, Hyng Jun then took us for basic forms Taeguk 1-8 which carried on through to 1800. Three hours of training under the World Champion of Poomsae was a real honour.” Because certain countries or groups might have their students doing things differently in their patterns, the objective of the course was to ensure that everyone is now singing from the same

hymn sheet. All of the information presented on the course was contained in the textbooks and the instructors also made their presentations available for all present. During the week the attendees were also taught Poomsae by Master Noh Hyng-Jun and Kang Il-Pil who took them through the black belt forms. As the forms got higher and more advanced, Master Lee Chon Kwon (who had taken Master Vohra for private lessons) took on for the higher Dan Pomsae. Previously, Taekwondo was ‘blind’ to the different body shapes of students the world over. Stances, for example, were set at ‘1.5 shoulders long, 1 shoulder wide’. Now however, instructors are being told to take individual body shapes and needs into account. “We were told that we had to take an individual’s different build into account by Master Lee so all the techniques are now taught sp that depending on body shape, students can still deliver techniques that are effective for them.” So in-depth was this course that Master Seo Jung-yoon gave a lecture covering fundamental club management. In this lecture he taught the attendees on how to run a successful club, as well as how to treat students and ensure high retention. The Head of Planning and Development Kim Byung-Sung’s lecture went into promotions (gradings), student eligibility, and even what they

should look for including correct eye control and breathing. The attendees were then taught an unbiased and complete history of Taekwondo from the start through to modern day by Master Ha Ung-yong. Aside from the more traditional and business orientated aspects of Taekwondo; students were also taken through a twohour presentation of the World Taekwondo Federation rules by Master Lee Sang-Hun for two hours. Often when someone gets a black belt it is assumed that they are immediately able to teach Taekwondo to all and sundry. This is not the case however and the Kukkiwon recognises that it is very important to ensure that even high-ranking Dan grades fully understand the best teaching practices and methods. With this in mind, Master Son Chun-Taek gave an in-depth presentation of Taekwondo teaching methods. During his speech he covered the format of how you teach people, how to treat children and how to get the best out of people. The 1st Class Instructor’s course is the most in-depth courses on Taekwondo that anyone (regardless as to whether they are ITF or Kukkiwon/WTF) can attend. This is backed up by the fact that not only do attendees cover patterns, teaching methodology and how to run their schools, for example, but they were also taught how to plan and conduct demonstrations. Master Lee Kyu-Hyun of the Korean Demonstration Team taught demonstration theory with the attendees watching DVDs of the demonstrations whilst being talked through the format of the demonstrations. This was then followed with an open question session. A theme that was constant throughout the course was the emphasis placed upon teaching Taekwondo correctly and in the best manner possible. Master Sun Jung-Kyu taught Taekwondo counselling. “The presentation carefully covered the roles of teachers, and coaches. Specifically this explained how important it was to be a good role model, how important it was to have a good selfimage (always making sure that you’re well groomed and wearing a clean and ironed Dobok for example). He also told us that we should be good ambassadors for Taekwondo and leading by example, always making sure that we teach techniques properly.” One of the more practical sessions was Fighting Theory by Yang DaeSeung. “He was a gold medallist four years on the trot. He actually took us in 2005 as well and this time he gave an

even better delivery of the lecture. It boiled down to basic techniques being good for fighting, covering movement, and taking it from there.” As you can see, if you’re planning to attend any of the 3rd, 2nd or 1st Class Instructor’s courses you’re going to have a very busy time indeed. Not only is there a lot of class work and theory to be covered (both during the day and in the student’s own time) but there is a lot of physical training as a lot of time is spent covering the basics of Taekwondo and the patterns. You can then expect to have a short exam. On the last day, there is a presentation and for Master Vohra this “was highlight for me as I was number one on the course and got I

also got a commendation letter which was something that I truly didn’t expect. This was presented by the President of the World Ta e k w o n d o Academy.” Mr Oh Dae Young,,Ph.D World Tae Kwon Do Academy Kukkiwon Academic Section Head at Kukkiwon was also at the presentation. Aside from the Masters giving the presentations, there were a number of other people who helped keep things moving. As Master Vohra explained; “Master Young Nip Na was in charge of students from the United Kingdom and we enjoyed a couple of meals and drinks. He showed us traditional Korean hospitality. When I went to Daejung, I was introduced to Master In Kwon Jang 6th Dan from Seoul. Who said that this was the first time he’d ever met a foreign 8th Dan and was very impressed that I was attending the Kukkiwon to grade. He made the effort to come and see me and invited me to have a meal with himself and his wife.” Master Vohra has such good relations with the Kukkiwon and the WTF that he was “honoured to be invited to a

meeting with Master Yang Jin Suk, the General Secretary of the WTF we had a quick meeting and introduction because earlier this year I did my International Referee’s course in Cairo, Eygpt.” In closing, he said that he wanted to express his gratitude to the International Department International Director Mr Lee Hyun Sun because, without their hard work, it would not have been possible for him to have attended the course. It was through them that he was able to obtain the special documentation he needed that allowed him to continue his stay and register for the course.

The 4th

Korean Hapkido Federation European Championships report by Jade Alexandria Smith - UK Branch Secretary As hosts of the Korea Hapkido Federation European Championships, the Duk Moo Academy is pleased to announce that the 4th Korea Hapkido Federation European Championship will be hosted by the Duk Moo Academy UK Branch of the Korea Hapkido Federation and will be held in February and March 2008 in the City of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Hapkido is a uniquely comprehensive traditional Korean martial art that has the most varied types of techniques, offering extensive training in many disciplines, including kicking techniques, joint-locking and pressure point techniques, throwing techniques, takedowns and submissions, striking techniques, break-falling skills, breathing techniques, and an array of weaponry - including the long staff, sword, cane, fan, short staff, middle staff, belt and rope. Most essentially, Hapkido is devoted to the simultaneous discipline of the mind, body and spirit and, therefore, Hapkido festivals such as the Korea Hapkido Federation European Championships and Grandmaster Seminars are important, not only for allowing participants and spectators the opportunity to share and enjoy the beautiful art of Hapkido, but also for 18 TKD/KMA WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK

the physical, mental and spiritual development of Hapkido practitioners and other like-minded martial artists. Some of the most senior and highlyrespected Hapkido Grandmasters within the Korea Hapkido Federation and the world’s Hapkido community will be making special visits from Korea to the UK in order to attend the event. One of the Grandmasters attending, and holding a Special Hapkido Seminar as part of the festival, will be Grandmaster Kim Duk In, Founder and President of the Duk Moo Academy and universally respected as one of the few people who helped develop the art of Hapkido. Grandmaster Kim is a Senior Advisor to the President of the Korea Hapkido Federation, Oh Se Lim, and he is the Korea Hapkido Federation’s 9th Dan certificate number 3. A Former Managing Director and Chief Examiner of the Korea Hapkido Federation, he was also the appointed Instructor for the 1st-6th Korea Hapkido Federation Black Belt Instructor Seminars. Grandmaster Kim has a wealth of knowledge and experience in Hapkido and Korean martial arts. He was the 1st person ever to be appointed Chief Instructor of the Korean Royal Military Academy (the Korean equivalent of West Point in the

USA). He taught the Korean Special Forces, and the Presidential Bodyguards of Korean President Park Chung Hee at Cheong Wa Dae (the Korean Blue House Official Office and Residence of the Korean President). He also appeared as an Action Director and Stuntman in a movie made about General Nam Hee. After being selected to do so by the Korea Hapkido Federation, he travelled to other countries in order to help promote Hapkido throughout the world. He was one of the pioneering Masters who 1st introduced Hapkido in Columbia and he was the 1st Korea Hapkido Federation Instructor to teach Hapkido in several European countries, introducing Hapkido in France, Switzerland and Sweden. Grandmaster Kim’s family has a 37-generation history of senior military warriors and of possessing good-quality weapons and martial arts techniques, and, in addition to developing Hapkido, Grandmaster Kim also learnt martial arts techniques and gained a wealth of knowledge from his Grandfather, General Jul Chung Kim Kyung Sik (a senior martial arts warrior and a senior official in charge of the King’s bodyguards at the end of the Chosun Dynasty). Also making a special visit from Korea in order to attend the event will be the

International Director of the Korea Hapkido Federation and Chief Instructor of the Duk Moo Academy, Grandmaster Seo Myung Il. Grandmaster Seo has taught Hapkido for over 30 years and has been, and still is, one of the best next-generation Senior Masters. He completed, and was selected as the Group Leader at, the very 1st Korea Hapkido Federation Masters’ Course in 1970. Later, he taught and promoted Hapkido in the United States and held a position as the Representative of Kangwon Province in Korea. During the festival, Grandmaster Seo will hold an International Meeting with academies and organisations already in, or wishing to join, the Korea Hapkido Federation. The Korea Hapkido Federation is the oldest, largest, most prestigious, and the main governing and certificating body of Hapkido in Korea and the world. He will discuss with them the benefits of Korea Hapkido Federation membership and the rules that they are expected to follow in order to maintain the standards of the Federation and ensure the proper instruction of Hapkido, including teaching methods and Official Korea Hapkido Federation Keup and Dan testing requirements. With the cooperation of the Korea Hapkido Federation, the festival this year will once again be organised by Grandmaster Kim Duk In’s son, Master Kim Beom. Master Kim is the Korea Hapkido Federation’s UK Director and Official Representative, the Technical Director and Chief Instructor of the Duk Moo Academy in Europe, and the President of the United Kingdom Duk Moo Academy. Master Kim has held special seminars or demonstrations throughout the world, including in Korea, France, Morocco,

Switzerland, Sweden, Ireland, Greece, Spain, Panama, Belgium, and throughout the UK. In Korea, he taught Hapkido at a Korean Police Academy Branch and he taught Taekwondo to Air Force Troops for 3 years. In France, he taught the Police Nationale’s RAID Police Force and he assisted Grandmaster Kim Duk In, in expanding and developing the popularity of Hapkido in France, teaching Hapkido at various locations, and helping to establish the Duk Moo Academy France Headquarters in Paris. Then, following an invitation from the Morocco Taekwondo Federation, he taught throughout the country, holding gradings, Black Belt seminars, and instructing the Competition Team of the Morocco Taekwondo Federation. Following an invitation from the United Kingdom Mudo Academy, Master Kim moved to the UK in order to teach them Hapkido and assist them in developing their self-defence programme. Since then, he has taught Durham Constabulary, developing seminars and demonstrations as part of their SelfDefence Instructors Curriculum and training officers on Officer Safety Training Courses at the Constabulary’s Headquarters. In addition, Master Kim has travelled to various martial arts schools in England and Scotland in order to teach and assist them, established and developed many Duk Moo Academy Dojangs in the north-east of England, and opened the School of Korean Martial Arts (SKMA) in the south of England. The UK, and particularly the northeast of England, has been so fortunate to have already hosted 3 Korea Hapkido

Federation European Championships, and now be chosen to host the 4th Korea Hapkido Federation European Championship, simply because it is the region where Master Kim Beom is currently based. Once Korea Hapkido Federation unification has been achieved and the Duk Moo Academy’s School of Korean Martial Arts has had an opportunity to expand and develop in the south, it is planned that the Duk Moo Academy and the Korea Hapkido Federation will try hosting a big Korea Hapkido Federation European Championship festival in London. The Duk Moo Academy has strong affiliations with leading international Korean martial arts academies and federations based around the world and the huge successes of the events hosted by the Duk Moo Academy are very much related to the support received from the Duk Moo Academy’s extended family of leading Grandmasters. Grandmaster Shin Sung Hwan (President of the Chung-Ho Taekwondo Academy, the Taekwondo Research Institute and the World Mudo Taekwondo Federation, and Founder of the Traditional Taekwondo Improvement Union) and Grandmaster Ji Young Tae (Moo Hak Taekwondo Academy President of Ashan City, Chung-Chong County Ashan City World Taekwondo Federation President, and Pro-Taekwondo Technical Director) made special visits from Korea in order to support the 1st Korea Hapkido Federation

European Championship and hold Special Taekwondo Seminars as part of the friendship festival. Master Kim June (Planning Director of the Korea Hapkido Federation and Secretary-General of the Duk Moo Academy) also visited from Korea in order to add his support to the event and hold an Official Korea Hapkido Federation Keup and Dan grading on the evening of the 1st day of the festival. It was the first time that the Korea Hapkido Federation had sent representatives to inspect the development of traditional Hapkido in the UK and many of the world’s leading Korean Grandmasters - including Oh Se Lim (President of the Korea Hapkido Federation), Grandmaster Han Bong Soo (Founder and President of the International Hapkido Federation and known as the Father of Hapkido in the USA, after being the 1st person to introduce Hapkido in the USA - in 1967), Grandmaster Song Young Ki (Founder and President of the Han Moo Academy, the Korea Hapkido Federation’s 9th Dan certificate number 2, and the then Korea Hapkido Federation Technical Director), Grandmaster Kim Duk In, Grandmaster Kim Jin Pal (Founder and President of the Jin Pal Hapkido Martial Arts Federation, Instructor to movie stars such as Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Angela Mao and Carter Wong, and former

Personal Bodyguard to Korean and American Presidents), Grandmaster Seo Myung Il, and Master Thomas Lok (President of the Jin Pal Hapkido Martial Arts Federation (Canadian Sector)) - sent congratulatory letters, expressing praise for the efforts made by Master Kim Beom in promoting and teaching Hapkido in the UK and added their encouragement, support and best wishes for the event. The 2nd Korea Hapkido Federation European Championship was supported by the attendance of, and the 3 Special Seminars held by, Grandmaster Han Bong Soo, Grandmaster Kim Duk In and Grandmaster Kim Jin Pal. Grandmaster Han Bong Soo and Grandmaster Kim Jin Pal made special visits to the UK from their Headquarters in the US, and took the opportunity to meet up with their Hapkido brother, Korean-based Grandmaster Kim Duk In. After watching the European Championship and awarding medals and certificates to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed participants in each category, each Grandmaster held a special seminar concentrating on different elements of Hapkido. During the festival, students were also honoured to be tested by Grandmaster Kim Duk In, when he held an Official Korea Hapkido Federation Keup and Dan grading on the final day. All

3 Grandmasters took time out of their very busy schedules to attend from their Headquarters oversees and, undoubtedly, all participants who attended this festival were honoured and privileged to learn much from their wisdom. The 3rd Korea Hapkido Federation European Championship was supported by leading Korean Grandmasters based in Latin America, as they attended to support the Championship and meet up with Grandmaster Kim Duk In, who made a special visit from Korea for the event. Grandmaster Kim Duk In’s sworn brother, Grandmaster Park Song Il (Founder of Hapkido Panama, teaching Hapkido in Panama for over 30 years), visited from his Headquarters in Panama and both Grandmaster Kim Duk In and Grandmaster Park Song Il held Special Seminars on the final day of the festival. In addition, Grandmaster Shin Yang Ki (Pioneer of Hapkido in Argentina) visited from his Headquarters in Argentina in order to add his support to the event. On the final day of the festival, students were also honoured and privileged to be tested, in an Official Korea Hapkido Federation Keup and Dan

grading, by a panel including Grandmaster Kim Duk In, Grandmaster Park Song Il, Grandmaster Shin Yang Ki and Master Kim Beom, as well as other watching European-based Masters. Now in its 4th year, it is hoped that this year’s festival will once again build on the tremendous successes of the previous Korea Hapkido Federation European Championships and Grandmaster Seminars hosted by the Duk Moo Academy UK Branch of the Korea Hapkido Federation, by further developing, unifying and popularising Hapkido in Europe. The festival has grown from strength to strength and more and more countries are expressing a desire to participate and take the excellent opportunity to share knowledge. Many academies, organisations and Masters from around Europe, including from France, Greece, Hungary, Spain, Belgium, Ireland and the UK have attended the events already hosted. Though it is a European Championship, students from all over the world, and Masters and Instructors from non-European countries including Korea, Canada, China and India have also attended in order to learn from the wisdom of the visiting Grandmasters. For the event this year, the Duk Moo Academy and Korea Hapkido Federation are already in negotiations with 20 countries, including a country from the African continent. In addition, the event will once again be attended by the Duk Moo Academy’s European-based Masters and students, including Master Dimitris Ifantidis and some of his Duk Moo Academy Greece students, Master Sung Daeman and students from the recently opened School of Korean Martial Arts in the south of England, and Instructor Nicolas Marrocco with a team of Duk Moo Academy France students.

Festival Schedule: Friday 29 February 2008, 18:00-22:00: Black Belt Seminar and Grading A Black Belt Seminar will be held on the 1st evening of the festival for Korea Hapkido Federation members. The Seminar has been organised by Master Kim Beom, with Special Guests Grandmaster Kim Duk In and Grandmaster Seo Myung Il attending. During the Seminar, an Official Korea Hapkido Federation Keup and Dan grading will also be held. Saturday 1st March 10:00-16:00: Welcome Ceremony and Championship Competition The visiting Grandmasters will be officially welcomed and, after a special Black Belt demonstration by the European Duk Moo Academy, the 4th Korea Hapkido

Federation European Championship competition will begin. Individual participants will demonstrate techniques in categories such as self-defence, punch and kick defence, knife defence, kicking techniques, Nak-Bup (break-falling techniques) and Jang Bong (long staff). Participants will be judged according to their grade-level. For example, in the Nak-Bup category, Dan grades will be asked to perform advanced Nak-Bup techniques such as side-rotational breakfalling, as opposed to the length and height tests for Keup grades. In the team categories, groups of 3 or more participants are invited to demonstrate an array of techniques, including self-defence and kicking techniques from a multitude of situations. In another team category, teams are invited to demonstrate a form, for example with the Jang Bong, in synchronisation. All participants will be assessed in terms of their all-round skill and manner, including their courtesy, strength of self-confidence, and the accuracy, speed and fluidity of their techniques. Sunday 2nd March 10:00-16:00: Grandmasters’ Seminars This year, the Official Korea Hapkido Federation Keup and Dan grading has been moved to the 1st day of the festival, so that a full schedule of longer Grandmaster Seminars can be held on the final day. The Grandmaster Seminars will cover different aspects of Hapkido and participants will learn much from their wisdom. For example, Grandmaster Kim Duk In’s Seminar will cover advanced internal Hapkido techniques such as chiropractics. At last year’s festival, Grandmaster Kim Duk In told all Duk Moo Academy participants that, because of the Duk Moo Academy’s reputation of possessing highlevel internal techniques, it is important that all Duk Moo Academy Black Belts maintain this reputation and are skilled in chiropractics. He has promised to teach them, as well as non-Duk Moo Academy participants, when he attends for the 4th

Korea Hapkido Federation European Championship festival. Grandmaster Kim’s seminar will also cover the different Hapkido techniques, for example grabbing and throwing techniques, which can be used in sparring competitions. Though not well-known in the UK, Hapkido sparring competitions are popular in Korea and around the world. The Korean art of Taekwondo has now become popular as a sport but, due to its syllabus, Taekwondo sparring is limited to kicking and striking techniques. The vast syllabus of Hapkido, covering complete self-defence in any situation, means that Hapkido sparring competitions have a vast array of different techniques. The entire festival will be held inside the Lipman Gym, Northumbria University. As a friendship event, men, women and children, of all ages and of all martial arts, regardless of affiliation, are invited to participate in the Grandmaster Seminars and demonstrate and share techniques at the Championship event. All spectators and supporters are also welcome to attend the Championship event. The Korea Hapkido Federation European Championships and Special Grandmaster Seminars present a good opportunity to learn from the wisdom of Grandmasters, not only Korea Hapkido Federation Grandmasters, but the most highly respected non-Korea Hapkido Federation Grandmasters too. It is hoped that the festival will be a good opportunity to share knowledge and, most importantly, for all martial artists to share and experience the true sprit of martial arts. MARTIAL ARTS WARRIOR SUMMER CAMP 2007 Weekend Warriors Train Hard! Tae Kwon Do Schools of Excellence, ERMAA and survival martial arts academy hosted their Annual Martial Arts Summer camp in Worcestershire on the first weekend of September 2007. The event took place at the fantastic location of Malvern Outdoor Education Centre, set in the hills of Malvern. The event was attended by more than 30 students from the UK, all of whom had many different martial arts styles between them. It was an excellence opportunity to get together and meet new friends and to experience many different styles of martial arts, all in the great outdoors. The styles that were on offer at the camp were Tae

Kwon Do, Escrima, Jiu Jitsu and Systema. Course organisers Russell Perks, Sebastian Bird, Mario Di Paola and Nick Di Paola kicked off the event in unique style with cold water dousing which took place every morning. Over the weekend all students participated in a wide variety of martial arts including the kicking style of Tae Kwon do, which included many self defence applications including flying kicks, set sparring, pad drills etc. There was weapons training, such as Tonfa, Jo staff, Kubotan and street self defence from Jiu Jitsu and Systema which is a Russian martial art which included knife throwing and more unarmed combat

against single and multiple opponents. Across the two days of training the centre included other additional activities which including orienteering, obstacle course and the superb zip wire. On the close of the first day of training everyone relaxed by the BBQ enjoyed the clean fresh air and watched a thrilling professional firework display, leaving everyone wanting more! The event was a great success and was enjoyed by all. Chief instructor Russell Perks said, “A combination of martial arts and fresh air was a perfect weekend away, but it wouldn’t have been the success it was without the help and dedication shown by all the instructors, so to them I have words of thanks. And of course to all the students for participating and having a good time, which is what it’s all about! Thank you to you all”. Next year’s Martial Arts Warrior Camp is still in the early planning stages but we would like to hear from any student or instructor who would be interested in taking part or teaching at next year’s event. Korea’s World Taekwondo

HAMADANG A Haven for University Talent The 2007 Korean World Taekwondo Hamadang took place from 1st to 4th November 2007 in Suwon, South Korea. The event as always was run and organised by the Kukkiwon and is open for foreign competitors to enter and compete in all the non fighting disciplines of Taekwondo such as Poomsae, self defence and breaking techniques. As in 2006, the event this year again attracted competitors from all over the world with strong teams from countries such as Japan, China, Canada, the USA and Mexico. The London Taekwondo Academy, a member group of the BTCB also sent a team to compete headed up by LTA’s chief Instructor, Master Usman Dildar. On a personal note, Master Dildar was very pleased by the etiquette and Taekwondo spirit shown by his students during the event and who were all very well received by other players and instructors from many other countries. He commented, “This event can only be

By Master Kevin Jervis 26 TKD/KMA WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK

described as a Martial Arts Extravaganza and is a wonderful opportunity for students from all over the world to test their skills in all the non fighting aspects of this wonderful martial art. Everybody here is so friendly and respectful to each other. It is fantastic not only to bring a team here to participate but to also witness first hand the amazing talents of the competitors, especially the Korean University teams who are absolutely awesome. Every time we come here it is also an opportunity to meet old and new friends from all over the world. Taekwondo really does unite everyone in friendship.” It was an absolute pleasure to see the LTA at this event. They are probably one of the most courteous and friendliest groups I have had the pleasure of getting to know. The attention they received from the many Kukkiwon and WTF officials that were present was clear to see and without doubt helps to keep the UK’s relations with these organisations very strong. The event itself is still growing in size and popularity, especially with teams from

many of Korea’s Universities competing against each other. According to Kim Eui Won, a 25 year old student from Kyung Hee University, the number of university teams from Korea competing against each other at this event has doubled in the last two years to around 40 teams. He explained that around 20 to 30 students from his University’s demonstration team were there to compete and he was personally very eager to get on the floor and display his skills, specialising in multiple board breaking and somersaulting while kicking through pieces of wood held high up in the air. Unfortunately he just had to wait his turn while literally hundreds of university students took to the floor before him. There are around 300 Taekwondo students within the Taekwondo department at his university with around 20 to 30 of them forming part of its demonstration team. They all study other subjects during their

this time. He stated, “I had to learn English to be able to have a conversation!”

Taekwondo students will train for around 2 hours a day 5 days a week. Some of them just study Taekwondo, some compete in Kyorugi, while others such as Kim Eui Won specialise in Taekwondo demonstrations.

He went on to say that the Hamadang is Korea’s no 1 tournament for his university’s demonstration team who have increased their training regime in the last 2 months in the hope of bettering last years placing when they collectively gained second place at the event.

The university often displays Taekwondo at pro basket ball and soccer events and other Taekwondo tournaments. This often takes them abroad to countries such as Thailand, China, Japan and Russia with funding usually coming from the event productions. Competition to join the university’s Taekwondo department is fierce with only around 80 places available each year.

Kim Eui Won lives in Suwon and hopes to run his own Taekwondo School in Korea once his 4 years are up at the university. He surprisingly informed me that it is still quite common to make a good living teaching Taekwondo in Korea but for now he was concentrating on helping his team compete for that sought after 1st place.

I wished him and his team luck but was not fortunate enough to see him and his team compete the following day. In any case, this event is more about the bringing together of students from all over the world and the taking part in it than winning it. It was a very memorable experience to see and just as master Dildar pointed out, the way that this event brings people together from all corners of the globe in friendship really does show that Taekwondo truly is Korea’s gift to the world. Foreign students wishing to know more about the Hamadang or other events run by the Kukkiwon can visit their website at www.kukkiwon.or.kr

Hundreds of applicants apply who are all subjected to a number of physical tests such as speed kicking, sprinting, sit ups, basic kicking and special kicking. All these tests are conducted over the course of a day and although students are expected to hold the rank of 2nd Dan, exceptional students holding 1st Dan are occasionally accepted. 90% of them leave as 4th Dans with a small number being promoted to 5th Dan depending on their rank when they began their 4 year course if they were accepted. Kim Eui Won joined the university after doing his military service in Pakistan where he taught Taekwondo to the Pakistan national team. Stephen Thompson Proudly Presents...

THE ULTIMATE MARTIAL ART BUSINESS SEMINAR Is it possible for a single school to gross over £30,000.00 in one month every month? One man does, and has done it for years. For the first time Stephen Thompson, owner of a chain of schools in the UK is sharing his PROVEN strategies and reasons why his schools are one of the highest grossing in the UK.

What can S-M-A-R-T do for you? There is no better job out there than being a Martial Arts Professional. Teaching martial arts has always been a passion for me. As a younger man competing was everything. I could not wait for the next tournament to come around. In my tournament career I have travelled all over the world, but I do not want to bore you with that, I just want to assure you, I am a real martial artist. I Love Martial Arts and what is had done for me and my family. I always wanted to teach full time, and tried. My first clubs went well, apart form, of course summer, when things would slow up, and I was back doing my trade, being a poor carpenter.

I have had a decade of building systems! You see there is not one system out there that tells you what to do from the start, well, there is now. Over one weekend, I am going to tell you how I run my schools and how I have been so successful.

What will you learn? If you are thinking of opening a school, or if you have one already, it does not matter. The systems that you will learn on the seminar are the same ones that my staff use every day to generate £30,000 a month from one location. In actual fact you will be able to see the schools in action if you wish to visit one of my locations as a V.I.P. I will even share with you the running school numbers!

“Martial Arts should not be about making money” I have heard this so many times, and you know what, I was once like that! But the gift that God gave me was the ability to do martial arts. It just made sense to me. But I can tell you, having to put my hand in my pocket to pay for hall rent because I did not have enough students to pay it, hurt more than any punch or kick I took on the mat. If you have been in Martial Arts for any length of time you will probably have seen some great martial artist. But all to often, these people had to stop teaching because they could not afford to carry on. I believe martial arts is a wonderful sport and has so much to offer everyone, so this is why my martial art schools must run at a profit. This way I can make sure they stay open, and I am giving a great career to my instructors. Whether your goal is to build a massive organisation, or just to make sure your school is paying for itself, do the S.M.A.R.T thing, and ask for more information.

Instructors = £45K a year? My Instructors wages, that’s right not the owner - the instructor running one school Listen. I know you can go along as you are, hey, who says I have something better than the next guy. BUT, you have to wonder, if you had my systems; systems that work; that have enabled me to grow from 1 school that was out of a church hall twice a week, to now running 4 full time locations with hundreds of students.

Norwich WTF 2007 Club Championships Norwich WTF held its 2007 club competition at Norwich Sportspark. This fantastic venue, within the grounds of the University of East Anglia, has excellent facilities and has become a welcomed home for the group since their previous venue in lakenham closed down earlier in the year. Club members battled it out through the various categories in Poomsae (technical) and Kyorugi (fighting) determined to gain medals in what turned out to be a very exciting evening. In the final of the 8th (yellow belt) to 4th (blue belt) Kup Poomsae category, Master Haplin

30 TKD/KMA WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK

Lenore Seaman came up against Gary Askham. Despite Gary performing his techniques with speed and power, Lenore put in a superb performance showing excellent execution of technique to take top spot and the first of the evening to secure a gold medal. In the 3rd to 1st Kup final and just as expected, Marvin Slaytor found himself up Andy Connolly. Marvin had been training hard in preparation for his upcoming BTCB black belt grading so was the odds on favourite to win gold but unfortunately for him he lost his focus mid way through Taegeuk O Jang seriously effecting his

marks, putting Andy well ahead. Andy came out for his second Poomsae of the final, Taegeuk Yuk Jang, and played it safe with a steady performance gaining good marks. Marvin put on a fine display for his final Poomsae but just had too many marks to make up and had to settle for second place with Andy taking gold. The black belt Poomsae category was well contested with numbers almost reaching double figures. Everyone performed Poomsae Koryo and despite some fine performances Andy Crysafi and Matt Fever’s really stood out securing good enough marks to see them go to the final where they both performed Poomsae Keumgang. It was very difficult to differentiate between these two very talented competitors who both displayed Keumgang with precision and power but ultimately Matt did just enough to take top spot and the final Poomsae gold medal. Master Con Halpin, a 6th Dan Black belt from the Brotherhood Taekwondo club in London had made the trip to Norwich to act as senior Poomsae judge for the evening. Master Halpin has been BTCB National Poomsae champion for many years and has represented Great Britain at many international events at one time being ranked number 5 in Europe. As the Poomsae competition was held prior to the Kyorugi, Master Halpin then kindly agreed to put on a Poomsae display during the break. Master Halpin hadn’t been training particularly hard in recent weeks due to other commitments but nevertheless he then displayed Poomsae Chonkwon with amazing form much to the delight of everyone present who could then see first hand the type of standard that would be required to become an international competitor. The Kyorugi competition then kicked off in dynamic style with really spirited performances in the Kup grade semi final from Tom Adams who went up against Felix Tang from Hong Kong and Gary Askham who virtually went head to head with Andy Connolly. However, Felix and Andy kept their cool in both semi finals and managed to outpoint their opponents to secure a place in the final which Felix went on to win. He

did this in style by picking Andy off with a variety of techniques using good footwork and timing although it was not all plain sailing as Andy managed to score some points with several well placed kicks. Shaun Banham then out pointed Lenore Seaman in a mixed bout showing much promise for the future. The Dan grade fighters then took to the floor with everyone fighting their hearts out. Paul Charlish had one of the most difficult draws of the evening coming up against Ken Reeve in the quarter finals. This was one of the toughest fights of the evening. Both fighters are well over 6 feet tall, are strong and are very capable kickers. Paul managed to do enough to win the match but no doubt battling it out with Ken took its toll and he was unable to repeat the performance in the semi final against Matt Fever. Fitness played a big part in this result with Matt, a fitness instructor from Bannatyne’s gym, coming out on top. Adam Want, Marvin Slaytor and Walt Barker all scored well against their opponents in the semi and quarter finals but as in the final of the Poomsae competition, Andy Crysafi and Matt Fever both had strong performances throughout the competition resulting in them meeting up again in the final. With Andy having to settle for second place against Matt in the Poomsae he was now determined to take gold in this Kyorugi final. The match turned out to be everything you would hope to see in a final with both fighters going all out for a win. Kicks and

Matt Fever in action

punches were exchanged at a terrific pace and there was little to distinguish between them. However, Matt’s fitness yet again was to be to his advantage as Andy began to tire, allowing Matt to just edge it by out pointing him and taking his second gold of the day. At the end of the evening, Norwich WTF Chief Instructor, master Kevin Jervis praised everyone present for the commitment and determination shown throughout the evening and thanked Master Halpin and Tony Cherrington for their

assistance at the event. An awards ceremony then took place with Master Halpin presenting the medals to all first and second placed competitors in each category. Master Halpin then addressed the competitors praising them for their efforts and for the hospitality shown to him throughout his stay in Norfolk and stated he hoped that such visits would become a regular occurrence with perhaps joint competition evenings involving his own Brotherhood group in London.

BATTLE of the

SOUTHEAST! Report by Jonathan Choi

Much have I seen and known; cities of men. And manners, climates, councils, governments, Myself not least, but honoured of them all; And drunk delight of battle with my peers, Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy. I am a part of all that I have met. - Lord Alfred Tennyson, Ulysses

Legend has it that there were 300 Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae. Last Sunday, Rayners Lane Taekwondo Academy was represented by just eleven fighters at the battle of St. Albans. These brave few threw themselves into the fray with scant regard for life or limb, sure, they might have been outnumbered, but they could never be outgunned. The Maunders duo of Wesley and Abigail, and the Berry brothers Liam and Ryan led the vanguard into the Patterns division, spearheaded by Charlotte Fox. As our crack squad of hellions poured unto the breach and took their positions around Rings Two and Three, the Academy’s supporters whooped and cheered. Limbs flew, snapping into blocks that flowed like freshly spilled blood into

strikes. Again and again, stepping and punching in a logical sequence against one or more imaginary opponents. Power. Precision. A final crescendo. Kihups rang throughout the arena like a hail of bullets. Scorecards flapped like battle pennants. Amid the fog of war, it was hard to see who had won. Mr. Fox peered intently at the far corner as the smoke cleared. “I think... yes, Ryan’s won something!” he cried, and indeed he had, grabbing a third place and the first of many glittering prizes for the Academy. Seconds later, Abigail emerged triumphant. Gold for an impeccable rendition of Dan Gun. Without even a chance to savour the flavoursome tang of victory, it was on to Junior Sparring. A sea of armour-clad Juniors thronged the hall, straining at the

leash of courtesy to face up and get involved. Charlotte and Abigail’s pads screamed Girl Power but not in the way the Spice Girls ever intended. Pink footpads and pink gloves flashed through the air, landing point after point. The sidelines hummed with activity as the Judges flipped scorecards as fast as they could be flipped. Within a couple of intense, short rounds, the girls had earned themselves and Rayners Lane Taekwon-do Academy another Bronze and Gold respectively. The sibling duo of Liam and Ryan mirrored the effort in their events, taking home another medal apiece. Some muscular punching earned Ryan Gold, while the elder Berry brought home a brave Bronze. Meanwhile, Wesley was facing a tough route to the final. By the cunning expedient of repeated hammerfists to the top of his opponent’s head, the young fighter had racked up a 5-0 lead. Then disaster struck. A foul was called and Wesley’s score reset all the way back to 0-0. The 8th kup laughed in the face of the deduction. He fought his way back to another win, only to be checked in the final by an older blue belt fighter who somehow managed to fight in with the yellow belts!. Wesley walked away with his head high and a Silver trophy, vowing that next time, the Gold would be his. The Junior bouts complete, the rival factions took a breather. A peace, ignorant of all the combat that had gone on minutes ago, blanketed the hall. It was Christmas in No Man’s Land, and both sides emerged to chat and stretch together, wilfully ignoring that morning’s hostilities. The troops feasted on little hot dogs while the commanders picked daintily at fancy pastries. Sworn enemies regaled

each other with unlikely war stories, and compared scars - souvenirs they’d brought from wars gone by. But this war had not yet been won. As the Generals totted up their victories to date and planned for the next onslaught, an uneasy tension returned, and the threat of impending violence snaked its way between the rival camps. The latest reports from the front came in and all eyes turned to the scoreboard. The Academy’s warriors were sitting in a distant second place, eyeballing the trophy for best club. No number of hot dogs could satiate the hunger of Rayners Lane Taekwondo’s troops. Before too long, battle resumed. In the senior 3rd Dan + Patterns division, Mr. Anslow impressed the judges with the 4th Dan pattern, Ul-Ji, beating the excellant patterns man/nemesis Mr Snow (5th degree) and his rendition of YongGae. In third place was Mr Whithead (3rd degree) who perfomed Choong-Jang tul. These grizzled veterans barely had time to rest their battle-worn bodies before they were called up to duel in the Veteran’s Sparring event. Hampered by a 20kg weight difference, some slippery mats and some even more slippery kicking, Mr Anslow narrowly lost to the event’s host, and eventual winner, Mr. Snow, who was in fine form on the day and must have been secretly training for his first foray into the veterans divsion. Thankfully, Anslow Sabum-nim more than redeemed himself, winning with some dynamic hands and feet in the final round-robin matchup. The bout was an entertaining toe-to-toe, brawling war with Lincoln LTSI’s Mr. Hurt. It was surprising to see the quality of the techniques in this division considering its a veterans section, with all the oppoenents showing the younger black belts some crisp jumping techniques, technical kicks and fast hand combo’s. Mr. Avis stood out from a crowded field in the 1st and 2nd Dan Patterns division, with a crisp and powerful showing. Colin ‘The Engineer’ Avis took home Gold and brought the Rayners Lane Taekwon-do Academy’s medal count crashing its way into double figures. Hope against hope, the tide of war seemed to be turning. Mysteriously, the crowding of the black belt Patterns division was only exceeded by the dearth of competitors in the Sparring division... perhaps our reputation preceeds us somewhat! In the black belt sparring final, the Whirling Dervish Mr. Gautum faced up to Mr. Avis. Mr. Gautum used his awesome experience to produce some silky combinations and used the slide-y conditions to good effect, flooring Mr. Avis several times in the first round. The Engineer rallied in the second,

but it wasn’t enough to prevent Mr. Gautum avenging his earlier loss in the patterns division to Mr Avis. Still, Mr. Avis got to take home another Silver. To quote the poet, Homer (Simpson), “De-fault. The two sweetest words in the English language!” The Black Belt Destruction event was contested by a similarly shallow field but the challenge was on none the less. Stepping up to duel against some boards of adamantium-like strength, Mr. Gautum composed himself and measured up with immaculate poise. Mr. Gautum eyeballed the target and an expectant hush descended on the assembled spectators. The calm before the storm. Silence turned to violence. A battle-cry rent the air, shaking the hall, and the blade of a foot sword blasted towards its victim. Even in the dying days of the USSR, no Red Square saw anything like the brutality of the next few seconds. The aforementioned ‘red square’ being one of the UKTA red boards which I believe is equal to 3 standard boards... and these were fresh out the packet on the day! Vik the Elder bludgeoned his way through three out of the four breaking techniques to steal away the honours from a field consisting of Mr. Anslow and Mr. Avis. His final technique, a screaming knifehand strike that sledgehammered its way through the Iron Curtain. Finally, it was time to roll out the big guns. Richie, Doun and Lyndsey answered the call to arms and assembled at their respective rings for Patterns. Within minutes, the top two places in the 10th to 7th Kup division had gone to the two young Turks performing Dan Gun. Stepping off the podium with a big grin, Doun was admonished by Mr. Anslow. “More humble Dunny!” But only sparring - the art of hitting people when they’re trying to hit you back - could feed the hunger: The hunger to prove one’s worth as a student, as a fighter, as a human. Doun and Richie flew through their first two fights. Edgy and excited, Richard ‘The Butcher’ Baker was unable to get past the bargepole reach of his next opponent - a mountain of a man with a ferocious over-the-top punch. Doun ‘Albert’ Choi was dwarfed by the same fighter in the final, but did battle nevertheless. It’s often said that pain is just weakness leaving the body, but Doun didn’t feel too strong when he impaled himself on a fierce side-piercing kick. Massaging his kidney back into shape, he picked himself back up off the floor to finish and lose the fight with a couple of points and a semblance of dignity. Meanwhile, Lyndsey ‘The Little One’

Reynolds, was battling in a crowded field of coloured belt fighters. In Patterns, the 1st kup placed fourth in a well-contested division. As for Sparring, Lyndsey threw her trademark barrage of punches at her leggier foe, but the judges were insufficiently impressed. The Little One had to console herself with a Bronze and dreams of what could have been. The Academy’s final prize of the day was picked up by Doun, who side-piercing kicked his way through a somewhat easier red board to pick up a Destruction trophy. A ceasefire was declared and combatants on all sides downed arms. Rayners Lane Taekwon-do Academy’s troops dusted off their wounded and began to disband, heading home for their hero’s welcome. “War! What is it good for?” Edwin Starr once asked. His conclusion? “Absolutely nothing”. The elite squad of Rayners Lane fighters who did battle that day would beg to differ. All had proven their mettle, and were content with a second place earned by an undermanned squad in hostile territory, to a capable and larger army. Then something amazing happened. The final scores trickled in, and totals were totted up. Rayners Lane (and a dazzling array of poorly spelt variations Ryner Lanes, Rayner Lanes, Ranyers Lane): Nine Golds. Five Silvers. Five Bronzes. Lips moved and brows furrowed as the assembled warriors practised their basic arithmetic. FORTY-TWO POINTS! We had done it. We had edged out our enemies with a narrow two point victory - a margin even thinner than LTSI’s floor mats. As Charlotte hefted the Area Title Trophy, almost as large as herself, even Mr. Anslow allowed himself the humblest of smiles. He deserved it. After all, the Spartan’s didn’t even win. ILT International

Instructors Course 3rd/4th November 2007 On Saturday 3rd November over 150 students gathered at the Vauxhall Recreation Centre in Luton England for the 3rd ILT International Instructors Course. This was an open seminar for anyone whether already studying a martial art or merely wanting an introduction to what styles are available and if any suit them. The course was hosted by Master Hiron John (VII degree - President of ILT TaeKwon-Do, England). The day started at 12:00 with registration followed by a vigorous warm-up, compliments of Mr Andy Betts VI Degree the students then divided into groups so as to rotate around each area and experience the multiple martial arts on offer. Instructors for the day included Master Cliff Witcher (7th Dan Ju-Jitsu) who introduced the students to the hard style of Zen Kenpo jujitsu through small circle applications, kenpo attacks and pressure points. Master Witcher also gave a demonstration of the heavier throws found in his style - a favourite among the

younger members. Mr Daniel Morris (III Degree) also introduced. Aikido but focused on throat attacks and utilising walls in your defence. Mr Max HooQuartey (III Degree) introduced Tai Chi whilst Mr Jason Bernard demonstrated kung fu. Mr Kevin Kelly from Ireland and Phillip Bartlett (IV degrees) took the students through some Korean kickboxing sparring drills. Miss Michelle Day 1st Dan introduced students to the weapons of nunchaku and escrima whilst Mr Andy Betts (6th degree) showed Jo, (4ft staff) attacks and defences and how to defend against short weapons such as knifes and broken bottles. The day concluded with presentations of certificates for courses & gradings and student of the year trophies. Everyone received a commemorative poster of the event, a fitting end to a very enjoyable day. All students left happy with their new found knowledge, many retreated to the bar for some well earned refreshments before proceeding to a local restaurant for a hearty meal and some socialising. For most it was an early

night as there was more training planned for Sunday. Sunday 4th was dedicated to the patterns found within TaeKwon-Do. This seminar was conducted by Master Hiron John who took the students through the fundamental movements found within the patterns (a set series of movements in defence and attack against imaginary opponents). The method of teaching allowed anyone, whether a TaeKwon-Do student or not to be able to participate without confusion and develop their own skills with the knowledge gained. The day concluded with the grading of over 125 students. Special congratulations to Mr Kevin Kelly from Ireland and Mr Chris Knights from England who both achieved their 4th degree black belts. Also, congratulations to Mr Adam Drury, Mr Leigh Kelly, Mr Tyler Yoxhall, Mr Joshua Allman, Mr Leo Allman, Miss Theda Harriott, Miss Michelle Day, Mrs Fiona Conway and Mr Kevin Willoughby who all successfully passed their 1st degree black belt grading. www.ukti-ilt.com (Tel: 01582 508336)
