BRITAIN TO STAGE FIRST EVER

INTERNATIONAL

TAEKWONDO OPEN Britain will stage its first ever major taekwondo Open later this year when Manchester’s Sportcity plays host to The British International Open from 1st2nd November. The creation of this major international tournament is further testament of Britain’s rapidly growing status within the Olympic sport, having successfully staged the World Olympic Qualifiers last year. The event, which will be open to both domestic and international athletes, is being supported by UK Sport and Manchester City Council. There will be no qualification process for aspiring competitors which means top British club athletes will have an invaluable opportunity to gain vital experience against Olympic, World and European Champions. John Scott, International Director of UK Sport said “Setting up this annual event is an integral part of British taekwondo’s aim to become one of the top taekwondo nations in the world, allowing world class competition to take place on an annual basis in the UK. This event will allow all of the 16 British elite team members and the entire British Junior squad the opportunity to experience fighting on home soil in front of the home crowd.” Councillor Mike Kane, Manchester City Council’s Executive member for Arts and Leisure, said: “Manchester will be thrilled to welcome this international event to our city in addition to the national championships already planned in September, especially after the success of the national championships at the end of last year .” “Over the next 12 months there will be many more fantastic opportunities to see world class sport in our world class city, including track cycling, swimming, football, running, paralympic events and squash as part of Manchester World Sport 08.” Adrian Tranter, Chairman of the British Taekwondo Control Board (BTCB), commented: “It is with great pride that my tenure as Chairman coincides with Britain hosting its first ever international open. Taekwondo in Great Britain has enjoyed an unprecedented period of growth and success in recent

years. Our elite Great Britain squad is one of the best in the world so it is fitting that we should be staging an international calibre tournament. The BTCB have worked hard over the past few years to promote Britain’s role within Europe and it is great that we will now be staging this annual tournament which will give all our athletes a chance to pit their skills against the best in the world.” Other International Opens staged in Europe have often attracted fighters

from over 50 countries including Asia, South America and Africa and have proved a vital stepping stone in developing the careers of Britain’s athletes. Great Britain enjoyed considerable success at last year’s German and Dutch Opens winning 12 medals which included four golds. These impressive performances have since been followed up with Britain qualifying three out of a possible four places for this summer’s Beijing Olympic Games. Sarah Stevenson

First Strike for Keighley! Strike Taekwondo Club welcomed Grandmaster Vohra 8th Dan Black Belt to Oakbank Recreation Centre, Keighley on Sunday 30th March. Grandmaster Vohra (Picured) who is the highest ranked Kukkiwon Taekwondo Instructor in the U.K. was in Keighley to conduct a grading, demonstrate techniques and teach a training seminar. The students were graded on their kicking and hand techniques, self-defence, sparring, terminology, patterns/forms and also, for one student breaking wood. Rhiannon Taylor successfully broke the wood with a standing front

kick and jumping front kick. All students were successful in passing their grading and were presented with their certificates and new belts by Grandmaster Vohra on the day. Those who successfully passed their grading were Nathan Ward, Leah Moorby, Natalie McSharry, Sam Plummer, Dominic Williamson, Adam Whitaker, Connor Range, Robyn O’Rorke and Rhiannon Taylor. More students then arrived to take part in the training seminar which followed. Grandmaster Vohra demonstrated and taught a range of techniques which included basics and jumping kicks. RUMBLE JUNGLE in the

by Tracey Leonard (Secretary of the L.T.S.I.)

12 TKD/KMA WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK

Rumble in the Jungle: On Sunday 9th March, over 250 competitors (of which 89 were fielded from the L.T.S.I.) took part in what many claim is the L.T.S.I.’s tournament of the year, considering it is not run as a National event. I.T.F. and A.M.A. schools from all over the U.K. attended the 5th South East Opens which was, once again, being hosted by senior Instructor, Mr. Chris Snow, 5th Degree. Master Harry attended and offered support to the L.T.S.I., which was a real confidence boost for them - there were also many 6th, 5th and 4th Degrees who showed willing and gave full support. Once again, up for grabs was a four foot regional title for the best school - the members would have to work hard to de-seed the 2007 winners, Rayners Lane Tae Kwon Do. This years’ event was a major milestone, as the L.T.S.I. had kitted out four rings with mats for sparring and one ring for destruction - this move showed how serious the group are with regard to making events possibly the best and safest they personally can within the U.K.

road. Teams were quickly put together, ensuring all rings were run by totally independent umpires all day (as always). The tournament commenced and standards were somewhat varied (never the less, standards were high). In the pattern sections, scores were put forward and, as normal, some parents complained (Chris asked why some parents seem to think they have a 9th Degree Black Belt built into them!) The umpires were fair with judging, but, at times, even Chris said “What were they looking at?” On a few occasions, Stuart (who was overall ring supervisor) asked why some judges had given really low scores, but it seems many outsiders have different interpretations of how patterns should look and what has to be scored in such events. The proceedings moved forward well, as the kids tournament exploded into sparring - schools such as Aldershot T.K.D., Rayners Lane and Hemel L.T.S.I. battled to get to the top of the leader board, but all knew that St. Albans were lurking in the background, waiting to stamp their authority in the afternoon event. Never the less St. Albans ‘A’ were doing fine at this time, despite four students being unable to compete,

placing the team at risk and giving a bad knock to the latter scores. At 12 noon, the kids’ event was nearly over - Aldershot T.K.D. and Rayners Lane were still fighting to be top dogs, with Hemel L.T.S.I. snapping at their heels. As the 13 years plus tournament started, over 35 1st and 2nd Dans took to the floor to execute some fabulous patterns. The L.T.S.I. taking both silver and bronze medals in this division was a great achievement, proving that the L.T.S.I. is taking the patterns more seriously than ever - the gold was taken by Aldershot. Over in ring three, the 3rd Dans and above were doing battle. Aldershot Instructor Paul Adams and tournament host Chris Snow had drawn for a fight off for gold - many were shocked to see the pair receive a very unfair 5 amongst two 8’s given by the panel, which consisted of two 5th Degrees and a 6th Degree. Up again, both made a valiant attempt to impress the judges - rather than give the score though, shockingly the three judges spoke for about five minutes and then announced the winner! Many could see Chris was fuming, as the rules state NO conferring and give a score immediately, but this was not to be. Chris was placed into silver position.

At 7am, Chris and many of his members were on site - the big van was parked outside the loading area and all 150 mats and tournament items were being passed through the doors like a well oiled production line. Various jobs were assigned to all members and family members who were there to help where possible. At 8am, the entourage had laid all rings out and set up every area within the arena, including the upstairs canteen. What a task to undertake, but if anyone can do it, the L.T.S.I. can, as everything is fine tuned by Chris. By 8.45am, most of the visiting schools were on site - a few were not though, due to the M10 closure that weekend. All officials that were there were called to the canteen area, where both Chris and Stuart Smith, 3rd Degree, would highlight the L.T.S.I. ‘rules of play’ for the day. The new rules, which are 95% I.T.F. but tweaked to ensure A.M.A. students can understand them, meant all had to browse the Umpires book sent out by Head Office that week. After confirmation that all had read them, it was time to get the show on the WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK TKD/KMA 13

Next up was the sparring and, boy, did we see fireworks in the under 12’s Black Belts section! St. Albans member Ahmed Abdelkafi and Longeaton member Ben Dale had beaten other rivals to fight off for the Gold. In a clash, the two tore lumps out of each other but Ben was victorious, placing Ahmed into a well deserved silver position. In the under 55kg 13’s to 15’s section, St. Albans member Adam Aliousalah fought hard, placing himself into gold position - his final was hard but fun to watch. Next came the 56kg 13’s to 15’s section where, again, the lethal weapon Stephen Townshend would decimate the section, placing club mate Elliott Moulster and Matthew Sproston, Northants G.T.U.K. into bronze positions. Andrew Smith, Hemel L.T.S.I., fought a good fight against Stephen,

14 TKD/KMA WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK

but height and power was against him from the start - never the less, he picked up a well deserved silver. Next up came the over 16’s Black Belts under 74kg section and was this to be a slobber knocker! Ben Pethick (I.U.T.F.) made his way to gold, placing David Lewis (G.T.U.K.) into silver position and Michael Janes (Luton L.T.S.I.) and James Bradshaw (Aldershot) into bronze. Onto the over 75kgs Black Belts, Yordan Krastev (Hay T.K.D.) was a great fighter, beating all rivals to the post and making the gold his. In silver position came Adrian Cush (Aldershot T.K.D.), with both bronze medals going to Colin Avis (Rayners Lane) and Martin Wesolowksi (Hay T.K.D.) The next event was the ‘Old Timers Division’ (or at least that’s what many

were saying) - the over 35’s section. Up first was Chris Snow (St. Albans L.T.S.I.) and Adam Thorne (Braintree G.T.I.). Well, Chris is 6 foot 2 but Adam looked much bigger than him! The bout started and Chris fired off side and turning kicks like a machine gun, but Adam advanced forward, forcing Chris off the mat (and on his butt!). Chris changed strategies and went for the head with a well time axed kick in the face of Adam. Adam returned after a brief time out after getting dizzy and pushed Chris on the back foot - after a tie and a 30 second add on, Chris would find the edge and move forward. The second bout would see Stuart Anslow and Russell Bellinger in a very hard bout, exchanging blow after blow to outdo the other. Stuart found the edge, meaning he would face Chris in the final - this was a rerun of the Invitationals where Chris beat Stuart! Not this time though, as Stuart used a cunning game plan, making sure he stayed close and forcing Chris to fight on hands. The pair looked like rabbits as blows rained on each other at lightning speeds! The fog horn blew and both competitors cuddled (ah bless, what sportsmanship!) It turned out that

the bout was extremely close, but both were happy there would not be extra time as the mats had drained all their energy levels and they have given their best. Chris said “Silver is a good award for me - Stuart deserved the gold”. Onto the adults breaking - this was a tough feat, as two red boards were loaded into the frame. All contenders hit as hard as they could with 360 Degree jump back kicks. Chris fell on his butt (again!) and said “The mat moved!” (Was that just an excuse, Chris?!) The first round had been and gone and all were given a second go. Chris was up and focused - he hit the boards with sheer power and they exploded, but the official gave a foot fault. Drats! After nobody broke again, it was decided by all the winner would be Chris. As Chris smiled, he gave all competitors £50 each and said “Thanks for that!” (Only joking.....) The adults sections were tough, but bout after bout was run fair and square. The tables had turned and St. Albans was up in the top three Aldershot held their own and motored ahead, with St. Albans and Rayners Lane trying to take the area title. The ‘Aldershot Army’ had taken the gold in a few divisions, but were put into silver positions in many sections by arch rivals Rayners Lane and St. Albans. A very valiant effort was made by both Rayners Lane and St. Albans, who held their own throughout the day.

all Instructors for their continued support at such a high profile event for the L.T.S.I. He thanks the helpers who give up their time to support the event, especially Paul Townshend who drove the van and helped organise the set up of the event on the day. We must also thank John Moulster and Mandy Tansey who helped with the projection areas and Jeff Stewart for being on the door most of the day. Thanks also go to my mum Mrs. P. Leonard for helping me out in the kitchen all day, either feeding the officials or the competitors / their families. Chris asked for a special mention to go to Stuart Smith (who is as loyal as they come to the L.T.S.I.) - he worked hard on the day, ensuring all rings were running with no problems and breaks were given to all officials when they needed them. This year saw the new tournament program being used, which meant NO problems with the brackets at all. The program, which was designed for L.T.S.I. events, is being customized so all Tae Kwon Do communities can use it at future events - it will be sold via the company that built it after the L.T.S.I. informed them they had no interest in owning the rights to it, as it was deemed a better idea that all can use it. The L.T.S.I. are now preparing for the

first ever ‘Team Opens’, due to be held in June this year. The event, which will be open to all groups, will be run on I.T.F. styled rules and looks set to be an event that many will attend. More information on the L.T.S.I. can be found at their national website on www.uk-ltsi.com. The L.T.S.I. was formed in 2004 and has around 18 classes and about 400 members. They are affiliated members of the I.T.A. and I.T.F., but run their office and schools totally independent to any organization in the U.K. If you would like to take part in their events, please call their Head Office on 01727 822612 or visit the site for further information.

What followed after was a brief presentation of the County title to Mr. Adams, who had fielded three teams into the South East Opens and done a good job in preparing his members, winning it fair and square. Next was a surprise for Mr. Anslow, who was awarded a bronze Japanese figurine by Chris on behalf of the L.T.S.I. for his continued support over the last five years. There were many hard bouts - so much so, contact levels were even criticised by the event supervisor. The L.T.S.I. are currently looking at ways to clamp down on hard contact - one suggestion is placing their own referees on all rings, as many other referees allowed contact to go when it should have been capped from the start. As usual, Chris would like to thank WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK TKD/KMA 15

DUTCH OPEN British Taekwondo Team Returns From Dutch Open With An Impressive Eight Medals! Monday 25th February, 2008 The Great Britain taekwondo team have returned from the 35th Dutch Open in the Netherlands with a stunning eight medals. Their successes, which included a gold medal for Beijing hopeful Sarah Stevenson, is an increase of a gold and silver medal compared to last year results when Britain colleted six medals at this same event.

with a total of five medals which included a gold for junior competitor Jordan Gayle (Aces Taekwondo Club, Manchester) who beat Tahir Gulec from Germany in the final to win the 59kg competition. Michael Harvey (Aces Taekwondo Club, Manchester) and Adam Corrigan (Allen Taekwondo Club, London) both won silver medals in the -58kg and -84kg weight categories respectively with Corrigan only losing out to 2004 Athens bronze medallist Yousef Karami of Iran in a competitive final.

Stevenson (All Stars Taekwondo Club, Doncaster) beat Nina Solheim of Norway in the final of the -72kg category to clinch gold, her gold was one of three medals which came from female British athletes competing at the event. Louise Mair (Elgin Taekwondo Club, Scotland) also took gold having overcome a tough Iranian opponent in an enthralling semi-final. Louise’s final opponent withdrew from the final due to injury. Finally, Bianca Walkden (Elite Taekwondo Club, Liverpool) also won a junior gold in the +68kg weight category completing an exciting weekend for the female squad members.

Finally, bronze medals were won by Davoud Etiminani (Fusion Taekwondo Club, London) who lost in the –72kg semi-final to Hungarian Istvan Kiraly whilst 17 year-old Aaron Cook (Scorpion Taekwondo Club, Doncaster), competing as a senior, also won bronze in the -78kg event losing out to World 2007 World University

Games gold medallist Rouholla Table Kahangi of Iran, the eventual winner of the category. Gary Hall, Performance Director for Great Britain, said afterwards: “This is the perfect start for the team as they enter what will be a crucial 2008. It is particularly nice to see Louise Mair winning a gold which is a tremendous achievement to bounce back so quickly from the disappointment of not qualifying for Beijing last month. With the team in its current form I am hugely positive about the progress we have made and the potential to make an impact at the European Championships, which take place in April. Although Beijing is the primary focus we must take each tournament as it comes and next on the agenda is the German Open in two weekends time, an event where I hope to see the same levels of effort from the team.”

Stevenson commented: “This is the second year in a row the team has performed exceptionally at the Dutch Open and I was especially happy to see Louise and Bianca leading the way by also taking gold medals within their weight categories.” Stevenson, whose achievements helped the British female team finish second in the overall medal table, added: “To finish second overall is an amazing achievement especially when you consider that the winners Germany fielded a total of 46 squad members where as we had a squad of 16 including 5 female members. Had both Farren and Stella (the two female members who did not medal) not been unfortunate with picking up injures in their matches we could have easily topped the table and I just hope that we can all carry this momentum forwards to the European Championships in April.” The men’s team also enjoyed success WWW.TAEKWONDOMAG.CO.UK TKD/KMA 19

E.M.A. DERBY

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS The SGS & Torite Tae Kwon Do Club took a team of 9 players to the Albion Sports Centre, Derby on 16th March 2008 to compete in the County Championships of which 5 members had never competed before, but were nervously looking forward to the event. Arriving at 10.45 am we saw a queue a other teams eagerly lining up to gain entry having come from Leeds, Nottingham, Leicester, Derby, Peterborough and ourselves plus one large team of 28 players coming from Sheffield. There were over 120 entrants by the close of registration

alone in the Forms Section, meaning every section had at least 6 entries with the largest being Musical Weapons which had 27 entries. The day started well with young Morgan Creasey taking Gold in the U16 coloured belt section and team mate Liam Morrison taking Silver. This was followed with Paul Spencer making 4th place in the Weapons U16 and Silver in the U16 black belt traditional patterns. Next came the Team events and with 3 teams from our Club there was also some interclub competition going on, all within the best possible taste of course. In the U16s Jacob Chadwick-Dobson’s team took Silver with Paul Spencer’s

team following behind taking Bronze. Morgan Creasey also took Silver in the under 4’4” points sparring. Not to be outdone, the 6th form Torite team of Sarah Forth, Helen Boyd led by Josh Richardson took Silver in the adult team forms. Finally, instructor John Burke came back to compete after 4 months with a shoulder injury to take Silver in the black belt adult forms and Gold in the Veterans forms. John would like to thank all students and parents for their support and making sure they arrived at their departure site on time. Well done to everyone.

2008 ANNUAL INSTRUCTOR &

SENIOR TRAINING COURSE The Lions Tae Kwon Do Schools (a.k.a. ‘LTSI’) run quite a few events each year, many of which are open. The Instructors’ and Senior Training Day isn’t one of those because it happens to probably be their single most important event of the year! This year’s course was held - as per usual - at the LTSI’s Head Office in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Chris Snow is the only 5th degree registered with the ITF in the group, so it was natural he’d take charge of it. Chris has been training 22 years and he’s LTSI’s head and founder. LTSI has been operating for nearly 10 years, beginning in January 2001 with just one class and about 40 students. Now it has just over 400 members and 16 classes running every week. Six new instructors were qualified at the 2008 course, which Chris likes to refer to as ‘a course in management’. He calls it that because he regards the black belt as someone who manages the students’ development through supplying them with the tools needed to succeed. To be a coach, Chris asserts, demands many things - not just teaching, but knowing the law, setting good trading standards, establishing a leadership presence in the dojang - plus collecting and administering the finances needed to operate effectively for the students’ benefit.

The actual course began at 8.30am with a 90-minute PowerPoint display that emphasised the pitfalls and the rewards of teaching. Next it was time for the practical! Lisa from LTSI’s Northern schools was first to demonstrate her teaching ability and she covered many basics. Then it was John’s turn. John is a St. Albans member and former karate instructor. John taught the self-defence sections in the ‘Dan Gun’ pattern. Another St. Albans student - Lee stressed the importance of stances. Alicia (again from St. Albans) explained why the guard and stepping back after a counter were being applied in all schools. The practical was interesting, tough and enlightening for all concerned. It was followed by a written test and all 12 candidates made the grade with

pass marks of 75% and above. The course finished at 2.30pm with the return of the test sheets. The LTSI AGM began just 15 minutes later at 2.45pm and it concluded happily by 6.30pm. Then the festivities began at a local restaurant. Chris prefers it that LTSI is a small group of such dedicated family members because quality, rather than quantity, is their goal. Check out the course by visiting LTSI’s web-site at www.uk-ltsi.com. The site also contains ITF pattern videos!

BLACK BELT GRADING SUCCESS After 3 and a half years training and 4 hours of being on the grading floor, Daniel and Thomas Peacock passed their Junior Black Belts on the 23rd February 2008. They were helped along with 3 other members who were taking their pre-Black Belt grading, those being, Megan and James Taylor and Matthew Edgoose and what an inspiration all 5 were, giving 110% throughout. After going through all basic stances, kicks, punches and blocks they had to perform straight attack defence, knife defence, releases from grabs and

chokes, one for one kicking and sparring. After all that it was time to show they had power in their moves by doing a multiple break of 4 boards, each piece of wood being 8” x 12” and 3/4” thick. Two breaks had to be performed with lower limbs i.e. kicks and two with the upper limbs, punches, elbows, knife hand etc. and performed in a flowing and continuous cycle. Finally it was then time for them to perform all Kup patterns and then Koryo Poomse. The Juniors had 5 press-ups with Seniors doing 10 press-ups before and after each pattern also with a 50 metre run in

between. All students going for their Kup Grades and Dan Grades passed under the rules of the B.N.M.A.A. Daniel and Thomas also had to write a 500+ word essay on ‘how Tae Kwon Do affected them in their day to day life’, (Seniors had to write 1000+ word essay). Instructor, John Burke, would like to thank Paul Spencer for his help in showing lower Grades the basics expected of them plus Simon Etchells for his assistance on the Grading Panel. Best Junior Grade trophy went to Tabea Paul and Senior Grade trophy went to Liam Morrison. Once more, well done to all.

All successful Students with Thomas and Daniel centre front row.

Zone Out at Seni08 will see the world’s biggest martial arts expo and festival reach its landmark 10th year. A celebration of the entire industry, Seni is visited by thousands of dedicated martial artists, exponents, instructors and enthusiasts and is widely regarded as the most complete inter-active martial arts experience. It’s easy to see why because Seni boasts over 150 trade stands, hundreds of demonstrations, seminars and live events over 15,000sqm at London’s Excel in the heart of Docklands. Alongside the themed zones there is a film festival and an enviable schedule of appearances by the very best National and International Masters, celebrities and sporting legends, making the Seni weekend the must-see event in the fighting arts calendar. At it’s heart, however are the 6 themed entertainment zones, each distinct in nature-’Classical Warrior’, ‘FightSport’, ‘PowerSport’, ‘Survival’, ‘Tournament’ and Olympic Youth - with each of the zones delivering pro-active exciting feature events and talent to enable the show to appeal to the widest range of fighting art practitioners, visitors and enthusiasts across the Seni weekend. As 2008 is an Olympic year, we’ll look first at the Olympic Youth Zone....

The Olympic Youth Zone. 2008 sees Seni take place at the Excel within the 2012 Olympic borough of

Newham and Seni has worked closely with the Borough to ensure that the five combat disciplines, Boxing, Fencing, Taekwondo, Wrestling and Judo feature heavily in the programme of events through the Olympic Youth Zone. Taekwondo has always featured strongly at Seni, with the first Olympic gold medallist Michael Mouroutsos hosting training sessions and fighting a demonstration bout. TAGB World Champions Warren Vice and Andrew Deer fought a 3 round Masters of the Mat bout at Seni07 and Seni08 will see a Junior Taekwondo tournament take place on the brand new EFMA Disneyland Resort Stage. Judo has had an illustrious and continuous history at Seni with stars such as Neil Adams, Winston Gordon and Craig Fallon participating. Previous years have also seen demonstrations by the Army Judo Demonstration Team and Seni08 will see demonstrations by the feted Royal Marines Demonstration Team. New for 08 is a fencing tournament headed up by Linda Strachan, Commonwealth Games medal winner, Olympian and seven times British fencing champion. Strachan competed in individual and team events for the Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992 games and famous-

ly doubled Madonna in her fencing sequences for the Bond Movie ‘Die Another Day.’

Fightsport Zone Fightsport Zone is the ultimate experience for fans of the full contact arts as the zone encompasses Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Kick and Thai Boxing. Across the weekend there is a non-stop programme of live events, such as the ‘Ringmasters’ Thai Boxing elimination contest which is back in the ring at Seni08 with even more categories-62kg, 67kg, 72kg, 77kg, 82kg, 87kg and 97kg. Due to Ringmaster’s growing popularity there will now also be a 57kg female and a junior category too. For entry details contact Lee on info@ringmasters.tv. Last year Seni hosted the Newham ABA challenge and Seni08 will see the show go one step further as Seni is proud to be hosting the ABA London finals throughout Saturday 26th April. The ABA finals will give boxing fans the opportunity to check out the stars of the future as such professional stars as Lennox Lewis and Amir Khan started in the Amateur ranks. Finally, The Fightsport Zone gives the fans the opportunity to meet a host of top professionals from the worlds of boxing, Muay Thai and MMA and previous high-profile Zone celebrities have included Johnny Nelson, Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham, Matt Skelton, Clinton Woods, Royce Gracie, Chuck Liddell, Anderson Silva, Ernesto Hoost and Don ‘The Dragon’ Wilson.

Classical Warrior Zone The martial arts have a rich cultural history, steeped in tradition and nothing reflects this more comprehensively than the Classical Warrior Zone at Seni. It is the zone that represents and reflects fighting arts originating from Japan, such as Kendo, Karate, Judo, Aikido and Ju Jutsu. Arts from China, such as a variety of Kung Fu styles, full contact San Shou, Tai Chi, etc and from Korea arts such as Taekwondo, Tang Soo Do and Kuk Sool Won. South East Asian arts covered include Escrima, Kali, Silat and European styles such as Fencing and Savate are also covered extensively in the Classical 34 COMBAT WWW.COMBATMAG.CO.UK

Warrior Zone, which features a non-stop series of demonstrations on the custom built classical stage. Showcase events have included an England versus Holland 3 on 3 Karate challenge and a TAGB Battle of the World Champions for Masters of the Mat, the event highlight for the classical warrior zone.

Powersport Zone Powersport has become a tremendously popular zone at the Seni show and showcases alternative combative sports such Arm wrestling, strength and endurance events such as Strongman and Natural Bodybuilding, visitor challenges such as Dragan Challenge, Skipping, Bench Press and Grappler Championships. ‘Powersport’ Zone reflects the growing crossover between the martial arts and health and fitness industry and aims to provide advice, interaction and products to complement their training and lifestyle. Seni07 saw eight times Mr Olympia Ronnie Coleman made guest appearances and look out for more big names and challenges at Seni08.

Tournament Zone Seni07 saw the introduction of a dedicated tournament zone to promote a host of unique top-quality open championships in keeping with Seni’s commitment to promoting and raising the profile of all martial arts. The result was a series of stunning championship initiatives as the show played host to new events such as the London Wushu Open, the Capoeira Campeonato and the Seni Karate Classic across 16 matted areas in 4 fighting arenas across 2 spectacular days, making Seni one of the largest open tournament events in the World! The growth continues as not only do stalwarts such as The Gracie Invitational, the Capoeira, Karate, Freestyle and Wushu return, there will also be the Wing Chun Chi Sau Open and for the younger martial artist 2008 will see Seni launch the irrepressible EFMA Disneyland Resort Stage, featuring a non-stop feast of showcase tournaments and inter-active challenges including Karate, Taekwondo and BJJ. The highlight will be a demonstration challenge where everyone will get the opportunity to create and put on their own display onstage, with the winner getting to demonstrate at Disney! If your club would like to get involved in the challenge contact us on info@senishow.com

interactive taster workshops, hard hitting displays and exhibition stands in recruitment and career paths, training and accreditation courses, security, bodyguarding and outdoor survival products and services. Reality based arts such Krav Maga and Russian Systema, as well as armed forces combat are prevalent in this zone and, as is the norm with Seni, big names within the industry have conducted acclaimed workshops and seminars-men such as SAS veteran Robin Horsfall and renowned instructor Mick Coup. It also hosts interactive challenges such as climbing walls, assault courses and shooting galleries, all with the intention of keeping you active, educated and entertained when visiting the Survival Zone.
