Building on a Foundation of Alumni Support University of Missouri Alumni Association September 2006
Vision The MU Alumni Association shall be the pre-eminent resource for the University.
Mission Statement The MU Alumni Association proudly supports the best interests and traditions of Missouri’s flagship university and its alumni worldwide. Lifelong relationships are the foundation of our support. These relationships are enhanced through advocacy, communication and volunteerism.
To the MU Alumni Association: The University of Missouri is one of the great academic powerhouses of our nation. It has gained that stature over time because of the level of excellence attained by our faculty, students, staff and alumni. But excellence alone does not assure our success. Mizzou’s role as the state’s premier land-grant, research university has been nurtured, supported, advocated and protected for well over a century by the sons and daughters of this great flagship. In this, the Sesquicentennial year of the MU Alumni Association, I thank our alumni and friends who have supported Mizzou through their membership in the Association. I know that I speak for the 20 presidents and chancellors who have preceded me when I say that thanks significantly to this alumni commitment that dates to 1856, Mizzou has celebrated record enrollments, record research, record fund-raising and record facility enhancements to this magnificent campus. To those alumni throughout the world who proudly wear the black and gold, we salute you and say: You can leave Mizzou, but it will never leave you. With best regard on your 150th anniversary,
Brady J. Deaton Chancellor

Front cover: Students and alumni gathered during the controversy over the fate of the Columns, circa 1893. The inferno that consumed Academic Hall in 1892 spared the six limestone Columns. Few people know that the University’s Board of Curators originally resolved that the Columns would have to come down, but some alumni and local citizens objected to their removal. Gideon Rothwell, president of the board, had ordered a pair of mule teams hitched to the Columns, with instructions to tear them down. At this point, alumni learned of the board’s plan and added their voices of protest. In fact, the president of the MU Alumni Association, Gardiner Lathrop, made a persuasive speech to the curators. The board resolved that its previous resolution would be rescinded. The Columns would remain standing.
