The “Motown In The School” Package
History of the Motown Alumni Association The Motown Alumni Association started as an idea Billy Wilson directed to Martha Reeves of Martha and the Vandellas on March 1, 1995. She had just come home from the funeral of comrade Melvin Franklin (bass singer of the Temptations). She was distressed that the only time she gets to see her former work mates was when someone dies. Billy Wilson who was working with her on a community program she created in Detroit, asked her “Why don't you put together an alumni association”? Reeves said “Where did you come up with that cockamamie idea”? Then she said, “Why don't YOU create an alumni association”? Not knowing anything of the politics, and or nature of any ones issues, Billy Wilson decided to put the organization together. Wilson met Gladys Horton of the Motown group Marvelettes at an industry event, and stayed in communication with her via phone. Horton thought the Motown Alumni Association was a great idea, and allowed the MAA to use her name as an endorsement. Starting as a DBA based Internet only service, the Motown Alumni Association was created in 1995, but officially registered August 23, 1997. The MAA has obtained a measure of growth since its conception: 25,000 members worldwide 26-branched around the world Owner of MAA News Magazine (online only) Co-owner of DBMA Magazine (Detroit Black Music Awards) - Online Only Owner of the Email service MAA NEWSLETTER -5,000,000 email subscribers (unique and extended) Owner of Motown Alumni Association @ Facebook – Over 3,288 subscriber Owner of MAA NEWS Magazine @ Facebook – 2,034 subscribers Owner of the Motown Alumni Association (Personal site) – 5,201 subscribers Partnered with the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame in Sharon, Pennsylvania to facilitate a VGHOF Annex in the city of Detroit. The companies will run as a separate business venture, independently operated. DPS will negotiate a shared revenue plan with each operation. The Motown Alumni Association will administrate and manage the facilities on behalf of DPS to monitor the revenue sharing. DPS revenue potential will rely on tourism dollars. All promotion, marketing, and sale will rely on the organization and their method of financing their associations.
