Queen’s Farewell Message

Yan

QUEEN’S FAREWELL

Just one year ago, a week before the pageant, I was begging the staff to let me drop out due to my fears. I’m so grateful they didn’t let me because winning the pageant itself, and what followed in my year of reign, ended up being beyond my wildest dreams.

As a woman who studied Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and now works at Waymo as a software engineer, I was used to hiding parts of my personality, subduing my feminine side and other interests in order to fit into what I was “supposed to look like”. However, my pageant journey has taught me to be proud of all I’ve accomplished and that I shine where I stand out from others (even physically when I wear heels at 5’8!). I found my true self after my MAG experience and had one of the busiest years of my life yet - I applied to business school, accidentally became a Tiktok content creator (find me on @lisatok__!), started pageant coaching, and tried modeling for the first time. Just one year later, I’m moving to Boston to attend Harvard Business School in the fall, how crazy is that!

I want to especially thank all of my friends and pageant sisters who warmly rooted for me, and the staff who first believed in my potential when I didn’t. The legacy of Miss Asian Global queens that have come before me is a formidable one - Forbes 30U30 founders, Hollywood actresses, real estate extraordinaries. I’ve only just begun my journey, and I wish the new queen the best of luck on finding hers too.

With love, Lisa

Queen’s Farewell Message | Lisa Yan

Dear friends and supporters of Miss Asian Global Pageant,

As my reign as Miss Asian America comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I have experienced this past year. This role has been a transformative chapter in my life, shaping me both personally and professionally.

Throughout my time as Miss Asian America, I have had the privilege of meeting individuals from all diverse backgrounds, each with their own unique stories and perspectives. By listening to their experiences, dreams, and challenges, I have gained a deep understanding of the shared struggles, triumphs, and the limitless potential in our strong community. The connections and friendships made through this journey have been instrumental in shaping my path forward, giving me the support and love needed to pursue my dreams fearlessly.

One of my primary goals as Queen was to empower women to embrace their authenticity and channel their confidence. Through community outreach programs and speaking engagements, I witness firsthand the incredible impact that self-empowerment can have. I am continuously inspired by other women in the MAG community who have overcome adversity and broken societal barriers.

To all my pageant girls–remember that your story is your greatest strength. Embrace your heritage, celebrate your accomplishments, and never be afraid to dream big.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the honor of serving as Miss Asian America. The memories created together will forever inspire and drive me to make a difference in the world.

With heartfelt gratitude,

On August 8, 2015, Stephanie Lin was crowned Miss Asian America. Stephanie became the first Taiwanese American to win the Miss Asian America crown and she has made consequential impacts on behalf of her ethnicity and gender on a global stage.

In demonstrating the uniqueness of Taiwanese culture to the world, Stephanie rocked an authentic Paiwan tribe princess dress, embellished with boar tusks, shells, and eagle feathers.

Stephanie is an award-winning television broadcast journalist based in San Francisco. She is the recipient of two Emmy awards and at least 5 Emmy nominations. She is recognized by the Associated Press and the Radio Television Digital News Association for her coverage of California’s deadly wildfires. Stephanie also worked behind the scenes at the TODAY Show, CNBC, SNL, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Prior to her life in the news, Stephanie worked in tech, leading global marketing campaigns for video game development companies in the Bay Area. She is a graduate of UC Berkeley and the NBC Page Program.

We had the opportunity to sit down one-on-one with Stephanie to discuss her life since being crowned Miss Asian America.

Alum’s Journey

STEPHANIE LIN

Q: “Did you encounter any barriers getting into the news industry as an Asian American woman?”

A: “I have always had a strong work ethic, and I think that may have helped me break through a number of invisible barriers that can exist in any industry for a woman or other marginalized person. The hard lesson I’ve had to learn is the value of speaking up

Q: “Stephanie, it’s great to see you. For those who may not have had the opportunity to meet you, can you please tell us something about yourself?”

A: “I’ve always been a news nerd. I used to watch ABC 20/20 every night with my parents. The storytelling really drew us in as a family - and it was a great way for me to get out of doing math homework! I was also inspired a lot by the anchors, Barbara Walters and John Stossel. So you can imagine how surreal it felt when I landed my first job out of college at ABC News in New York, and worked on the same floor as these world-class journalists. Another fun fact: I am a gamer. I own every Nintendo console since the SNES!”

22

Alum’s Journey

and self-advocacy. It is essential to learn how to be your own champion - something that isn’t always taught and might even be looked down upon in some cultures. Having said that, I think systemic challenges continue to persist in many workplaces. The Asian American Journalists Association recently found local TV stations in major metropolitan areas did a poor job proportionately representing the AAPI population in their communities. There’s value in having journalists and newsroom leaders who reflect and understand the viewers they represent.”

Q: “What impact has winning the title of Miss Asian America had on you?”

A: “Winning has widened the spectrum of people in my world. I love that I am still in touch with friends I made through participating in the pageant those years ago. One of the things that I don’t think we talk about as much is the Miss Asian Global community. There are a lot of people involved with putting on the longestrunning Asian pageant in the U.S., and you meet such interesting people being a part of it. You also develop new skills and learn more about yourself and what you’re capable of. On a separate note, I appreciate the ongoing work by Rose Chung (Founder) to keep the spotlight on San Francisco Chinatown and Asian American women. It’s important to come up with creative ways to continue the dialogue and preserve AAPI history. We are fortunate to have leaders like Rose in the community.”

Q: “What would your advice be for this year’s Miss Asian Global court?”

Q: “What stories have you done that you are most proud of?”

A: “We all remember how scary a time it was during the COVID outbreak, and how hard that period was for at-risk groups. I got a tip about a senior living facility of 600 people still waiting to get access to the vaccine, months after the shots had become available. They were not getting any response from the local or state authorities. So, I worked my sources, made calls, and fought hard to get answers for these seniors - even getting pushback from the office of a local representative. After my story ran, resources were assembled to get those 600 seniors to a clinic to get their shots. I like to think that story helped save lives that day.”

Q: “You are an inspiration to many young women, but who inspires you?”

A: “My mother is a woman who inspires me greatly. She overcame a lot to come to the United States with my father, both of them navigating hurdle after hurdle to build new lives here. My mother was top of her class in Taiwan with an incredibly bright future there, but she chose a different path so her children could chase their dreams. She is well-read, beautiful, and so resilient. She is the wind in my sails.”

A: “Have fun! Keep an open mind because there will be people from all walks of life and backgrounds that you will meet. Our beauty is in our diversity and the different stories we offer to the world. Remember to live in the moment and hold on to the connections that you make. You never know who might offer a helping hand down the road.”

I am committed to improving health education for the Asian American elderly. While working in healthcare, I learned of the dangerous practices that result when patients are uninformed. For example, patients will share prescription drugs, reuse needles, and delay treatment without understanding the potential consequences. Using my platform, I plan to work with local clinics, pharmacies, adult day services, churches, and my own medical school to provide better educational resources for our seniors. While studying nutrition at Berkeley, I witnessed countless community members without food and shelter. This led me to volunteer at the Suitcase clinic and prepare warm dinners for them. With the Miss Asian Global platform, I hope to serve by partnering with leaders and non-profit organizations. Please support me in raising awareness about nutrition and addressing the lack of social infrastructure in disadvantaged communities.

“Don’t bring shame to our family.” These words rotated through my mind as I battled with depression and anxiety for 10 years. But today, I stand before you transformed. That’s why I started a podcast called “Creating Confidence”. Through this platform, we shatter the walls of silence, redefining what is “normal” to talk about. With my pageant sisters and healthcare professionals featured on my podcast, I advocate for accessible mental health education. Let’s break the stigma and reshape cultural perceptions of mental health.

When I was 12, I was diagnosed with scoliosis and put into a back brace for two years. This “S” shape curve of my spine introduced me to swimming and prevented my condition from worsening. This showed me that school sports not only helped to maintain health, but also teach life lessons such as honorable sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership skills. Because of sports, I turned my disadvantage into an advantage. Join me in spreading the importance of school sports. For many students like me, it is more than just exercise, it’s a chance at life that would have otherwise been out of reach.

Hate crimes against the AAPI community have surged due to xenophobia and racism. As a Chinese American from California, this hits close to home. Having faced bullying for my Asian features ignited my commitment to volunteer work and understanding the importance of compassion. In the last 3 years, over 10,000 incidents were reported, threatening our society’s safety and values. I now co-host public safety workshops, teaching self-defense with Grandmaster James Carter and Michael Ma to empower our community. Together let’s raise awareness, build a safer community, and combat hate crimes.

Fair labor laws, and worker rights impact us all. Workers endure exploitation, low wages, and unacceptable working conditions. My grandmother’s long hours and sacrifice at a towel factory drove me to learn about our labor laws. From this, I pursued a degree in Labor and Employment Studies and interned at a labor union. There, I witnessed the efforts to improve working conditions. My Role Models

My journey as a Miss Asian Global delegate can be best summarized in a single word: "transformaaon." Hailing from Hong Kong's bustling Global Financial Hub, and currently working in Commercial Banking, I found myself internalizing convenaonally masculine traits to maintain a professional image. However, to my amazement, the pageant journey helped me rediscover my feminine side, striking a harmonious balance between my femininity and professionalism.

Building the connecaon with my ancestry also came as a delighhul

Building deligh transformaaon. As a first generaaon immigrant, I had once concealed my ethnicity to assimilate and fit in. It was MAG that connected me with other Chinese immigrants, who had paved the way as role models in their communiaes. Their inspiring life journeys taught me to fully accept myself and ponder on how to ualize my skills and knowledge to become a role model in my own life.

This transformaaon would not happen without the support from my This a would family. I had long admired my father as the primary breadwinner and the embodiment of success. However, as I grew, I began to recognize the incredible sacrifices my mother made for our family. She served as the pillar of support for my father's career while simultaneously managing a funcaonal household. Witnessing her strength and versaality, I came to see her as a true superwoman and a new role model. This newfound appreciaaon was my inspiraaon to join the Wells Fargo's Employee Resource Groups, with a mission to provide beeer support for working women like my mother. Primed with the lessons from MAG and my transformaave journey, I aspire to become an industry leader one day, ready to serve and uplii the community!

The title of Miss Asian Entrepreneur was earned by exemplifying the winner's leadership and self-confidence in embracing challenges by utilizing her extraordinary skills in communication, organization, and acting with integrity. The Board of Directors expresses its deepest gratitude for the valuable contributions made by each delegate, which have enabled Asian America Foundation to continue in its mission of serving the community through its programs. This gallery pays tribute to the motivated and resilient individuals who garnered the highest funds through sponsorships and advertisements. Founder, CEO & Head Monster Monster Products Inc.

Noel Lee has revolutionized product categories in the high-end accessory business with premium speaker and interconnect cables, PowerCenters, and most recently, headphones and wireless speakers. But the real magic is how he taught CE retailers around the world that selling accessories is critical to profitability in an industry where the margins on hardware are disappearing.

In 2008, Lee transformed the portable music industry with the creation and marketing of the Beats by Dre line of headphones. Using his knowledge of acoustics, manufacturing, and sound, he created headphones that delivered the bass and impact that urban and hip-hop music demanded. He then taught retails how to sell them and more than doubled the size of the industry.

Noel has been awarded dozens of industry leadership and philanthropic awards including being inducted in the CTA Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the prestigious Plus X Awards in Berlin.

With over three decades of business, Monster is the largest privately-held Asian-owned business in the Bay Area. It continues to lead in innovation, having been granted more than 500 patents with 100 more pending worldwide, offering more than 5,000 products in more than 160 countries. Lee is still running the show and designs and voices every product including headphones and Bluetooth speakers. Today millions of consumers are enjoying Monster designed or manufactured products.

A Note From THE HEAD MONSTER

To the Asian American Community

I would like to extend my congratulations to Rose Chung and Vincent Ma on Asian America Foundation’s 38th Anniversary of the Miss Asian Global Pageant. Your organization has been providing the younger generation the opportunity to be recognized for their excellence in leadership, confidence and community service.

In this time of Covid-19, the efforts to produce this competition have been challenging. We applaud you for your innovation in pivoting the operation.

For more than two decades, we have been supporting the Miss Asian Global Pageant with scholarships and highly coveted Monster products to show our appreciation for these young women’s ambition and achievements. I commend each delegate for their platform to help others and bring awareness to meaningful causes.

All of you have an incredible "Monster attitude". We are grateful for the efforts of Rose, Vince, the volunteer team and the delegates for helping us to deliver the Monster message. It's the attitude of never giving up and thinking of creative ways to grow in the face of adversity.

Happy 38th Anniversary, and may you all be around for another 38 years empowering women.
