Maarten den Breeijen Born 07-07-’89 in Eindhoven, Netherlands

About My background is in Industrial Design Engineering, but in my way of working I have a more artistic approach. It is a challenging and exciting combination. I see myself as someone between two worlds; I don’t really feel like an artist, but I am not a hard-core engineer either. As an Industrial Design student I work often behind computers and produce 3d models and renderings as results. I find it also important to get away from computers from time to time, to make prototypes and art projects. ACTION PAINTING WAGON MASTER COURSE INDUSTRIAL DESIGN, AALTO ARTS Material

The Action Painting Wagon brings joy to experimental painting

Recycled wood

sessions with children by combining painting with music.

Various

The paper is placed on top of a speaker (which is placed in

Second hand stuff

the center of the tabletop). Different musical experiments can be carried out, which will cause the painting to vibrate

accordingly to the intensity of the sound. The final design of

140cm*94cm*82cm

the furniture was developed after a series of creative painting

(table)

sessions with children from Espoo, Finland.

INCREDIBLY CLUMSY TABLEWARE PERSONAL PROJECT Material

Paper is a fascinating material. A wad of paper is made within

3D printed nylon

seconds, giving an incredibly complex and unique shape. With modern software it is still difficult to digitally reconstruct these

Dimensions

shapes.

21cm*29cm*5cm (plate)

Incredibly Clumsy Tableware is 3D printed tableware, trying to capture this contrast. The cutlery is roughly cut from paper

Photography

and the plate is simply an wrinkled A4 size paper. The paper

shapes are scanned with a 3D scanner and edited with 3D software.

3286 PENCILS PERSONAL PROJECT WITH PIERRE BUTTIN Material

An installation consisting of 3286 IKEA pencils, trying to

show the beauty of mass production. Industrial processes are often accused of producing similar looking products, whilst

Dimensions

craftsman are making unique products which are supposed

to have some sort of soul. Take a closer look to these mass produced IKEA pencils and you can see that they are all a bit

different. Placed together they create an unexpectedly rich

composition of texture and color. The installation was displayed in gallery Atski, Helsinki

JOHNBOX FINAL BACHELORS PROJECT FOR JOHN’S, TU DELFT Material

Concept for a minimalist music player, capable of playing and

ABS housing

storing only one album. I made this concept for John’s, as my

final bachelors project. John’s is a small Dutch company that

that is only capable of calling.

Dimensions

From more than twenty bachelor projects for John’s, three

concepts were selected by the company. The Johnbox was chosen by John’s as one of the winning designs, with

possibilities for further development.

CRISIS CHAIR PERSONAL PROJECT WITH PIERRE BUTTIN

Material

The Crisis Chair is made by stacking two IKEA Lack tables on

2 Lack tables

top of each other. Its costs of 10 euros makes it a nice pick for people who want to afford original designer furniture while on

a recession.

53cm*53cm*106cm

The chair was displayed at Stockholm Furniture Fair ‘12 Photography

alongside expensive designer furniture. Due to financial

difficulties there was no money to finance a stand and the chair was driven around at the fair while we proclaimed our message of recession. The Crisis Chair received positive critique from numerous designers at the fair and was also mentioned on design blogs.

BUNGALOW FURNITURE MASTER COURSE INDUSTRIAL DESIGN ENGINEERING, TU DELFT Material

Starting point for this project was the purchase of an old

Tent material

smelly bungalow tent on the internet. The assignment was to

Lamp + fitting

use only the material of this tent to design furniture. I wanted

Electrical wiring

to reuse all the different elements of the tent in unexpected ways to create classic looking furniture with a twist.

LAZY AIRPLANE PERSONAL PROJECT Material

With this project I tried to search for the limits of 3D printing.

3D printed Nylon

Using a wall thickness smaller than 1 mm it is possible to create strong and flexible shapes with the same density

as paper. The airplane can comes ready-made from the 3D
