SECTION B
Situated amidst the wetland of Mission Creek, the project aims to explore edge conditions. Specifically, the street, houseboats, and water thresholds were emphasized. By rearranging the houseboats that currently occupy Mission Creek, introducing a tidal pool between two entrances, and reshaping the building to allow for easy street access, the building merges with the surrounding environment. This edge condition is further explored in the exterior and interior of the building itself. The skin of the building (perimeter) peels away to create pockets of enclosed space - this method allows for an undisturbed, fluid space. On the facade, the edge rises to make light wells and skylights. The overall design mimicks abolone, sea creatures that inhabit the surface of rocks.

URBAN DWELLING

One of the main features of the high-rise apartment is a lap pool that doubles as an energetic wall piece for the downstairs dining room. The angled, floating walls direct movement between private and public spaces in an open, fluid space. The outdoor, two-story ”patio” provides a space for gardening and growing trees in a high-rise structure. In addition, for smaller plants and flowers, a large botanical garden shoots up the entire height of the building - a splash of color against a canvas of concrete and glass. 3 experiences on the stairs Eyesight just barely over bookshelf

By situating one’s body in between two mirrors, the notions of double negative and space are distorted. A reflection of a reflection creates an “infinity space,” that which may not exist in tangible, present time. Regardless of this lack of physicality, mirrored space represents the dimension between physical reality and twisted, tunnelling, mirrored space. As such, the double negative in this case transforms into a winding space of infinite symmetries.

19th Street
Gates form a physical border and play a key role in distinguishing who is and who is not permitted within the premises. Upon observing the gates in Potrero Hill, it was found that a variation in distance of the entrance door from the street existed, as well as the spacial qualities, including shade, darkness, and minimal space, created within these bounded “nooks.” The intervention attempts to play off of the disjointed interaction that exists between separate “nooks” by creating loops and slopes that bend in such a way so as to create nooks of different characteristics.

Specific emotions are induced by physical surroundings. Rather than overwhelming the mind by encompassing the physical body with architecture upon entrance, the physicality of the object is separated and raised, thereby permitting a brief moment of contemplation...that which relaxes but lasts only until a slight tilt of the head upwards... Space is indeed as much physical as it is mental and emotional.

Inspired by texture and materiality, the structure mimics a clam/coral shape. In the daytime, it functions as an open fish market to promote a sense of community. At night, the structure unfolds to create an enclosed, private party venue. Attracting a younger crowd, the fish market machine transforms into an illuminated ribbed dome that uses the dynamics of light to create a new experience.
