January 2020
From the General Manager, Mark Reid One of the last business items of 2019 was to refinance the remaining balance on the note we have with Central Bank of the Midwest. It was sort of a milestone, as we’ve had the note with Central Bank of the Midwest for 10 years. We are now more than halfway through the 20 year amortization. We are also very pleased that we were able to maintain the same interest rate of 4.25% that we have enjoyed for the past seven (7) years. I still remember, in the height of a terrible
recession, that we were worried that interest rates would be sky high when we needed to renegotiate when the note ballooned at the end of its seven year term. All for naught. We now comfortably move into the last 10 years of financing with debt of $1.4 million. Over the past 10 years, we reduced the debt by $1.2 million and we have invested over $350,000 back into the facilities and golf course. Again, this was all done during a deep and seemingly unending recession and the long period of financial healing that followed.
Table of Contents
U.S. and Midwest economy with great momentum and outlook will provide, in our opinion, the tailwinds to move us through the 2020 election year with no threat of a recessionary downturn.

Wine FAQ To start the New Year, instead of a column featuring a specific winery, I want to try and address a few common questions on wine and wine service. Wine consumption among Americans has increased significantly in recent years, as the American consumer has become more comfortable buying wine in a wine shops and ordering in restaurants.
FRANK CASCONE, CLUBHOUSE MANAGER
Hello, Lakewood Oaks Members and LPOA Residents! The holidays are over and now we go through what I call winter limbo where the boredom sets in - can’t golf or do any projects outside. So why not visit the Argyle and have some great food and drinks to combat the winter blues? The Argyle reopens for 2020 on January 15. Stop by and celebrate the new season in the restaurant. Lots of fun events planned for 2020 so watch your e-blasts and Ripples for dates and times. As always, if you’d like reservations, call me at 816.541.2452. FRANK CASCONE, Clubhouse Manager Fcascone@logc.org
Q I find wine labels, especially of imports, to be confusing. How do I read them? A Most New World (USA, S. America, Australia and NZ) wines are named for the grapes from which they are produced. For example, US law requires that in order to use a varietal name (Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are some of the most common), the wine must be at least 75% of the named variety. Many Old World (Europe) wines are named for the region, or even specific sites, where they are produced. Legally, the producers are required to use particular grapes and methods in order to use geographic names. For example, wines from Burgundy are produced from Pinot Noir for reds and Chardonnay for whites. In Bordeaux red wines use Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and others, while whites are made from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Recently, red blends have become quite popular. As there are no legal requirements on what grapes are used, it is helpful if producers list the grapes on either the front or back label. Blends of Zinfandel, Syrah and Petite Sirah are usually fruit forward. Cabernet and Merlot blends are more classically structured and balanced. Q How should I match wine with food? A The easiest rule is to drink the wine you like with food you enjoy. Beyond that, pairing lighter and simple wines with lighter dishes and matching full-bodied and complex wines with robust meals works best. We have all heard the basic rule of drinking white wine with fish and red wine with beef. Generally, this works well, but there ae many exceptions. Salmon and tuna are delicious with lighter reds like Pinot Noir. Q How should I serve wine? Should I use special glassware? What temperature should wine be served? A Often we tend to serve red wines too warm and white wines too cold. Unless one has a dual-temperature controlled storage unit, there is an easy way to achieve proper temperatures. Simply remove whites from the refrigerator for about 20 minutes prior to serving and place reds in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes ahead of serving. Although there is some evidence that good crystal and specialized glassware will enhance flavors somewhat, I like to use decent, all-purpose glasses for everyday use. Using 12-14oz (filled half to two thirds full) tulip shaped glasses works quite well. Keeping wine service relaxed and uncomplicated while enjoying with friends and family is ideal. When the Argyle Restaurant at the Clubhouse opens again January 15, please stop by and enjoy some of handselected wines. Cheers!

STEVE GRIESINGER, COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
Happy new year! January starts the grounds crew New Year off with a “GRIND”, literally. We have approximately 30-reel type cutting units. Some mowers have three per mower and some have five. These reels will need to be dismounted from the machine, torn down to replace bushing, bearings, bed knives, etc. We will then relief grind and spin grind all the reels so they are razor sharp for the season. We will maintain the precision edge throughout the season by backlapping the reel every so often. Most years, one grind will make it through the season, but sometimes we will have to grind again during the season. So, for the next several weeks, the shop will be singing to the sweet sound of metal on metal.

Rick Scaletty started scuba diving as a hobby in 1986. He was fortunate enough to be able to dive in some of the most beautiful places in the world since then. Amazed not only with the beauty of sea life, but also how the survival of so many sea creatures depend on their symbiotic relationships, it became his passion to capture these special moments in the water with a camera. As the years of scuba diving passed, Rick became more and more aware of the changes in the reefs and the marine life. In many places he has observed first-hand how fish and sea life populations have been drastically
Sessions are help at the Lakewood Oaks Country Club, downstairs in the August Room. Contact Mary Duryea at lakewoodyoga@gmail.com if you would like more information.

reduced or become nonexistent. Coral reefs have become bleached out graveyards or are choked out with the prolific growth of algae. “According to marine biologists, about ninety percent (90%) of the Great Barrier Reef is dead or dying, as global warming causes sea temperatures to rise faster than corals can adapt to the changing environment. Pollution by plastic waste and destructive commercial fishing practices are devastating to sea life.” In his environmental activist role, Rick uses his underwater images to show the beauty of the underwater world that is rapidly disappearing. His hope is that those who see his art learn to appreciate the significance of our natural world and become better stewards of our planet. “Through education, knowledge and awareness, humans can learn to live in harmony with all life forms in the sea or on the land. But this begins with awareness at the individual level.” Rick contributes to increasing that awareness by donating 25% of proceeds from the sale of his art to ocean conservation.
Rick and his wife, Kathy, have been enjoying life in Lakewood since 1985. Stop by The Argyle Gallery and view the fascinating underwater world through the artistic lens of this talented scuba diver/photographer, Rick Scaletty. Have a drink while you enjoy the exhibit and stay for a delicious dinner in the Argyle Restaurant.

DO YOU WANT TO PLAY BETTER GOLF? DO YOU WANT TO HIT THE BALL FURTHER WITH BETTER ACCURACY? DO YOU WANT A FASTER CLUB HEAD SPEED? If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, you need to “strength train!” It is never too late to begin strength training. Strength training helps you to maintain your muscle mass as you age. The stronger you are, the better performance you can have in your daily activities. Yes, this includes playing golf! Not only will strength training help your golf game, it will decrease arthritis pain, lower blood pressure, and lower the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. As we age our muscles begin to shrink. Less muscle mass means less strength and the likelihood of injuries from falling increases. Strength training will help people retain muscle as they age. Adults over 60 need to lift weights more often than younger adults to maintain muscle mass. The good news is that you can reverse your muscle loss by resistance and strength training to rebuild your muscles. Never lifted weights or worked out? Unsure where to begin? Don’t let that stop you! Reach out to a Certified Personal Trainer to help you build your muscles faster and with proper form to avoid injury. If you’re interested in speaking to or hiring a Certified Personal Trainer, please reach out to me. I have over 10 years of experience and numerous training certifications. The best part is, my studio is located in Lakewood!
