From the General Manager, Mark Reid As I write this on the 1st day of March, the issue of the novel coronavirus is front and center in the news. We do not view this as a headwind to our operations here at Lakewood Oaks Country Club, now or in the future. If we just look at the statistics from the CDC for the October 1, 2019, through February 22, 2020, for the flu in the United States, you will see that there were 32,000,000 (yes, million) to 45,000,000 flu illnesses that resulted in 18,000 to 46,000 flu deaths. Currently, in the US, there are 88 cases of coronavirus with two (2) fatalities. We all watched the stock market get routed last week. One thing is for certain, nothing spreads faster that

first day of spring is not until March 19, I think we can all agree that we are ready for the warmer temperatures now. With springtime right around the corner, there are a few changes at the Club that you need to be aware of. First of all, the USGA has us back in active season and we can post our golf scores again using the World Handicap System parameters. Within the new guidelines you will hear terms like net double bogey, soft cap limits, hard cap limits, abnormal course or weather condition adjustment, target score, exceptional score adjustment, etc. While it may seem a bit confusing, it is actually very similar to the GHIN system that we are used to. You can go to the link, https://www. usga.org/content/usga/home-page/ handicapping/world-handicapsystem/WHS-resources.html , if you would like to learn more about the World Handicap System or simply stop in the golf shop and we can answer any questions that you may have.
Also affecting our March rounds is the removal of the cedar split rail fence on the Front 9 (Holes 1, 2, 6, 7). With those boundary markers being removed, we will be adjusting our “Out of Bounds” marking on those holes. We will continue to evaluate the best course marking procedure over the next few months. In the meantime, we are using the interior edge of street curbing as the boundary marker (no free relief from boundary markers) on any hole that does not have a sidewalk. If there is a sidewalk along the hole (parts of #1, #6, and #7), the interior edge of the sidewalk is the OB line. Again you do not receive free relief from the interior edge of any sidewalk or curb. You will receive stance, swing, and line of flight relief from any street signs that are in bounds. Updates to changes in this procedure will be broadcast over the next few months. Central Links Golf (formerly the Kansas City Golf Association) is scheduled to evaluate our course
for Slope and Course Rating in May. Central Links will also be giving recommendations on handicap hole allocations. Our Handicap Committee will take all recommendations into account before any changes are made. Finally, we are in beta testing of the online event registration that will be used in 2020. If you see the USGA Tournament Premium package on the website, it is not currently functional. However, as we get closer to MGA and WGA Opening Days, step-by-step instructions will be made available to get everyone signed up for any event or tournament.
Even though the weather isn’t perfect yet, we should be past the worst that winter had to offer. Looking forward to seeing everyone out on the links as we get to the warmer and sunnier days.

THE GODDARD SCHOOL® IS COMING SOON TO
Wine of the Month
LEE’S SUMMIT (LAKEWOOD)
BLACK CABRA MALBEC
Wines from Argentina, especially Malbec, have grabbed the attention of the American consumer. The Malbec grape was once common in Bordeaux, France, but after the phylloxera epidemic of the 1880s wiped out European vineyards, Malbec was sparsely replanted. Meanwhile, the Malbec grape had found its way to Mendoza, Argentina, and became a favorite red wine of the locals. The people of Argentina are significant consumers of beef, and Malbec is a classic pairing with grilled steak. Malbec remained an unknown to most American wine consumers for some time, but starting in the early 21st century, Americans began to discover the magic of Malbec. Black Cabra is produced at Tapiz Winery, formerly owned by KendallJackson, but now locally owned by Patricia Ortiz. Cabra is ‘goat’ in Spanish, and many wild goats roam the lower Andes above Mendoza vineyards. One particular “cabra” became interested in the workings of the vineyards and winery and became something of a pet for winery workers. Black Cabra wines are named for that wild goat. Black Cabra Malbec has medium to full body and rich dark fruit flavors accented by spice and earth. It is a delicious match with beef and hearty pastas. From Argentina to The Argyle – Black Cabra Malbec is waiting for you!

We will be aerifying the greens this month. If the weather has turned for the better, we will begin on Monday March 23. If not, we will try to start on Monday March 30. So barring any equipment and/or weather delays, we will be closed for a couple days depending on which start date. I thank you for your patience while we accomplish this necessary evil. March is a very busy month as we will be finishing up the board-directed split rail fence removal, tree trimming, and stump grinding. However, the main goal is to energize the irrigation system, which is the number one priority so we can perform necessary agronomic practices (i.e. fertilizer apps, aerification, etc.). So let the water FLY!

STEVE GRIESINGER, COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
QUICK FACTS ABOUT GOLF COURSES

How exciting, it’s March… the beginning of spring golf season! A fresh slate to your handicap and new beginning of the 2020 golf season. One of the few downsides of spring golf is rain and the conditions the rain brings to the course. Are your hips, knees and balance ready for the soggy conditions?
When your hips are tight and/or weak, you will not be able to get a full range of motion on your swing. It’s important to make sure your knees and hips can stand the elements of the course. Unfortunately, hips that are tight and/or weak can cause problems all season long.
When the course is soggy, you walk on unstable, sloppy, muddy ground. Your walk becomes different, your swing changes and you may experience some minor aches and pains in your lower back, hips and knees.
Most people don’t value the importance of their balance and they underestimate what their balance can do to their golf game. If you lack controlled balance on the golf course, you will have deceleration in your club

head. Your balance is the foundation to a good golf game. Strong balance helps control the flow of your swing, a greater range of motion, and it also creates strength behind the swing. When your balance is controlled, it will allow more stability throughout your swing, which will result in more distance and accuracy in every shot.
Here are a few great exercises that will help strengthen your core, including lower back, hips and knees, so you can become that strong golfer this year, with less injuries. Less than 10-15 minutes per day you will gain strength in your body and improve your game on the golf course! Elevated Glute Bridge or Hip Thrusters. Hold in a bridge
Bodyweight Squats or Wall Squats. Avoid bending too deep
position for 60 seconds and then bring your hips to the floor and lift your hips back up, continue for another 60 seconds.
and make sure your knees stay behind your toes at all times! 30-60 seconds.
Side Leg Raises, Supermans, Plank and Side Plank for 30-60
seconds each
Calf Raises. Slowly raise your heels
as high as you can and then lower. This movement can be done on the steps or the floor. Calf raises are great for balance! 30-60 seconds.
Straight Leg Raises. This exercise
helps strengthen your quads, without putting strain on your knees. Lie on your back, bend one knee and keep one foot on the floor, lift your opposite leg up straight. 30 seconds on each side.
Step Ups. Place one foot on a step
or a bench, step up with that foot and then step down on the same foot. Repeat on both sides for 10 times each.
On a side note, exercises should NEVER cause knee pain. Muscle soreness after a workout is normal, however, sharp shooting pain means STOP.
