AM GOING TO FOREGO discussing COVID-19 because between writing and publishing this article,
things will most likely have changed multiple times. Please follow all procedures discussed in the most recent communication.
With a noticeable uptick in play at the club over the past week, it is very important to book a tee time for your next round. If you want the best opportunity to get the tee time that you want: • Call the Golf Shop Tuesday before noon with your tee time requests • Between noon and 2:00 p.m., golf staff will compile requests and via a lottery system put members into their tee times • After 2:00 p.m., tee sheets will be open online so you can see your exact tee time • After 2:00 p.m., you can begin booking your own times online or add your name to your group In our next software upgrade we will be able to open up tee sheets just like normal but add openings the following Wednesday and Thursday to make it easier for membership to plan their golf week. If you are not receiving e-mail updates about the club, please let us know so that we can update your information. With new ideas coming out and restrictions changing rapidly, that is our quickest way to communicate with you.

Hello, Lakewood members and residents. I would like to thank all the members that are supporting the Club by ordering take out from the Argyle. This may not seem like much to you, but it helps us generate some income and keep some staff members working. These are some unique and difficult times we are faced with. None of us have ever seen anything like this before, so please don’t take this lightly. Do your part, stay safe, and practice social distancing. Hopefully, life will be back to normal soon. Remember, this is your Country Club, and we are here to serve and support our members.

THE GODDARD SCHOOL® IS COMING SOON TO
LEE’S SUMMIT (LAKEWOOD)
From the LOCC Golf Club Committee The Golf Club Committee is assThe Golf Club Committee is assisting in the search for the best option of online tournament and weekly registration. Currently, USGA Tournament Management Club Premium (Golf Genius) seems to offer the most comprehensive product that meets our needs. In the interest of maximizing the pride we all have in our golf course here at Lakewood, your Golf Committee is excited to launch a “Caring for the Course” program. The goal of this program is to add just a little extra TLC to the great work Steve and his crew already do on the course every day. We’ve all stood on any given hole and seen a smattering of broken tees laying on and around the tee box, a few fairway divots left unattended, or more, fresh ball marks on a green than are players in your group. While we all step up and address a few of those situations, it’s a daunting and pace-of-play-impacting task to think each of us can fix everything we see. So, the Golf Committee isn’t asking that you fix everything, but on top of your normal care, please give a special focus on just ONE HOLE assigned to you. The staff has assigned holes based on a member’s last name, and assigned an equal number of members to each hole. What can I do to assist in “Caring for the Course”? • • • • •
On your hole, clear the tee-box of broken tees and place them in the box (par 3s) or put them in the trash. Replace or tamp down divots on tee box or in fairway. Pick up any sticks you happen to walk by in the rough. Repair unattended ball marks on the green. Ensure yourself and players in your group are entering the sand bunkers from the low side and properly raking after playing. • Take note of anything on your hole that you think is array and bring it to the attention of Brian Bateman. What hole on the courses am I assigned to? Last name starts with:

I want you to know that at The Lakewood Clubhouse -Argyle Carry Out and Pub Grab ‘n Go - we are taking all precautions to keep your food safe. Not only that, you’ll get fresh, made-to-order, healthy food. We’re here for you. When shopping at a grocery store, wipe down the cart with disinfecting wipes upon entering the store. Experts recommend that when you get home from the store, wipe down all food containers with soap and water, as well as thoroughly washing produce. If you’re purchasing a fruit like apples, think about how people pick them up, look at them and return them to the shelf. You will be better off buying produce that is pre-packaged or bulk, such as apples in a bag.

Greens aerification went very well; the weather was perfect. By the time this article reaches you, the greens should be well on their way of healing. The four trees on the right side of #8 green have been removed. It is really a different view from the fairway. We will be getting the stumps ground, graded and grass installed soon. Hope to see you all on the course (at least from a distance).

Fitness Tip of the Month ALICIA ZELLER, RAISING Z BAR FITNESS You’re at the tee looking down the fairway and begin to check your surroundings. At this point you may notice your anxiety level rise a bit. What club am I going to choose? What’s the wind direction? All the obstacles to the hole. And, now your practice swing. You begin to align your body correctly and strike the ball. In the process of checking your surroundings and hitting the ball, did you ever think about the way you are breathing? Was it fast? Did you hold your breath? As you were taking your shot, did you feel anxious? Was your heart rate elevated? Could you concentrate? Did you overthink the shot? Do you know that your breathing can control all of this and more? Yes, it is that simple! The secret to controlling your mind is through your breathing! The mind follows the breath,
so the key to controlling your mind is controlling your breath. Breathing exercises can reduce anxiety, depression, fatigue, and muscle tension. When your mind is at peace, so is your breathing. Your breathing slows down and comes from the naval point. When you are stressed, your breathing changes into more shallow chest breath. This type of breathing pattern will signal the body to become stressed, with a higher heart rate and blood pressure. Many golfers unknowingly hold their breath or take shallow chest breaths when hitting a challenging shot or important putt. Your breathing can affect your heartbeat. The more you can control your breathing, the more you can manage

your tension. Shallow, fast breathing can cause over breathing, fatigue, and twitchy muscles, along with reducing blood flow to the brain. This can result in mental confusion, tension headaches, and indecisiveness. As you properly breathe, these challenges can be overcome, and you can create a more effective golf game allowing you to enjoy your round of golf! As you inhale, your inhalation breath works your sympathetic nervous system. This is your stress, fight or flight mode, telling your body “let’s get ready to work.” Your exhalation breath works your parasympathetic nervous system. This is the “calming” of your mind and body.
Here are a couple breathing exercises that you can do to control your breath as you check your surroundings on the course. Evaluate your breathing Put one hand on your chest and one hand on the navel. Where is your breath coming from? How is your breathing? Fast or slow? Are you breathing from your mouth or your nose? All your breathing should come from your nose. Now take a deep breath in through the nose, and a long exhale out your nose. Is your hand moving on your chest or naval point? If your hand is moving on your chest, you are shallow breathing. This type of breathing is a shortness of breath that can cause over breathing and extra stress on your body. For you to have effective breathing, your breath needs to come from the naval point. When you inhale, your abdomen should move out, and on your exhale, the abdomen should move in. The airflow should be smooth.
Box Breathing Exercise This breathing is for reducing stress and staying calm. This is a four-corners breathing; you’re basically making a box with an inhale, hold at the top, exhale, hold at the bottom. Beginners would start with an equal cadence of 3 second inhale - hold at top for 3 seconds - 3 second exhale - 3 seconds holding your breath at the bottom, and then repeat. More advanced is a 5 second inhale, hold, exhale and hold. You could repeat 2-3 minutes.
