From the General Manager, Mark Reid I think we have all accepted the reality that COVID-19 will be a part of our lives until such time that an effective vaccine if available. In the meantime, we will just continue to adapt, improvise and overcome. In spite of it, we are all having fun and enjoying this wonderful summer. Outside of the building and on the golf course we have very little limitations or expectations other that our hopes that everyone has a fun day and a fantastic round of golf. Inside the building we continue to have some limitations in order that we achieve our mission of
protecting our members from the spread of COVID-19 and get to the finish line with zero incidents. We will be working closely with members to plan our showcase member/guest tournaments this year around these limitations while assuring a quality event. As we continue to work under the orders of the Jackson County Health Department, we don’t anticipate having the ability to have indoor banquet capacity for these events or any of our other tournaments through the end of this year. If something changes, we can quickly adapt. Staff will be wearing masks in the building until further notice. The exception to this is if they in their office/workspace or socially distanced from our members.
This is for your protection, as well as Staff. Obviously, no one likes wearing a protective mask, but it is us doing our part to help assure that our members are protected against spread of the virus while they are in our facility. The Argyle is still an oasis during these times of concern about public bars and restaurants. I have been told by very cautious people that they felt that the Argyle arrangement and service put them at ease and they were able to enjoy a wonderful night out. We continue to be pleased with the rising level of membership and the enthusiasm we see each day. So we will all carry on and continue to make the best of each and every day and have fun while we do it. Enjoy!
The celebration of family, a tradition of civility and a commitment to excellent facilities and services will always be the hallmarks of Lakewood Oaks Country Club. Members embrace a shared tradition of 651 NE St. Andrews Circle Lee’s Summit, MO 64064 816.373.2505 LakewoodOaksCC.com

Beat the Heat
After a moderate June, golfers know that July and August and even September can be full of days with heat indexes up to 110 degrees. If you want to play or practice, you have to be smart. You have to protect yourself, and you have to know when to play and when not to play. Here are 5 tips to help you through the dog days of summer:
1. Hydrate That doesn’t mean wait until you are thirsty to drink water. It means drinking some water before you get to the course, and then constantly drinking water a little bit at a time throughout the round. Don’t play the front nine with no water and then drink half a gallon at the turn. And you‘ll note we are talking about water, which is far better for you on a hot day than a few beers.
2. Sunscreen Let’s be honest. Very few of us actually take care of our skin in the sun as well as we should. But playing in the scorching sun of the summer without proper protection is just inviting problems, including the
4
LAKEWOOD OAKS COUNTRY CLUB
long-term threat of skin cancer. So always have sunscreen with you and re-apply it during the round.
3. Wear a hat This can help keep your face and neck protected from the sun, as well as just helping to keep the direct sun off your head. And that can keep you cooler (not cool, but cooler) during the round. A wide-brimmed hat will help keep the sun from pounding on your neck, but any hat will keep the sun from frying your forehead.
4. Take other precautions How often do you see someone on a hot day in the desert standing in the sun on a tee box when there is
shade just three or four steps away? Take any opportunity you can to stay away from the sun. And maybe get one of those towels that can be soaked in cool water to wrap around your neck. You’d be amazed how quickly you start to feel normal again with a cold towel on your neck.
5. Don’t press your luck! If you feel a little fuzzy or woozy or weak, get off the golf course. Check out the Clubhouse. Have a tall lemonade or iced tea or more water. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are nothing to be shrugged off. Brian welcome all questions and suggestions, so feel free to contact him 816.541.2455 or brian@logc.org.

Wine of the Month GEN 5 OLD VINE ZIN
For five generations the Lange family has lived and worked their land in Lodi, California, always striving to leave the land in a better state for the next generation. The results are several outstanding wines – something for everyone.
FAMILY HISTORY In the 1870’s their great-great-grandparents emigrated from Germany to Lodi, California. They started a small farm growing watermelons. In 1916 their great-grandfather expanded the firm by purchasing a grape-ranch. Their grandfather continued carrying on our family’s agricultural roots and gaining experience on our land. Their parents greatly expanded the vineyards. In 2007, with all five members of the fifth generation onboard, they built their own winery, LangeTwins.
SUSTAINABILITY The Lange family has sustained a relationship to the land for five generations by valuing sustainability. GEN5 is certified green by Lodi Rules. They implement the following practices: Renewable Energy, Water Management, Habitat Conservation, Riparian Vegetation, Crop Protection, Soil Balance, and Vineyard Establishment.
FEATURING GEN 5 OLD VINE ZIN Gen 5 Old Vine Zine is a blend of two estate vineyards: 90 year-old vines impart intensity while 20 year-old vines produce bright fruit. And their reviews show it: Top 100 Best Buy (‘14), Wine & Spirits; Best Buy (‘15), Wine Enthusiast; Double Gold (‘15) SF Wine Comp. Very Cool: A Top 50 Selling Zinfandel in the United States! This wine is featured in The Argyle. Easy to enjoy by itself, with appetizers or a meal.
Ask for it by name and see what you think.

Chef’s Whim EXECUTIVE CHEF MOLLY MYERS
Benefits of Eating Farm-to-Table Executive Chef Molly Myers shops early at area farmers’ markets on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and travels to local farms to visit with farmers, forecasting and planning purchases from new crops that are just coming into season. This brings excitement from the Lakewood Oaks culinary team in creating specials around locally grown produce such as eggs, cheese, pastas, honey, and fresh baked items, just to name a few.
Other benefits:
She believes by offering nutritious food, something folks can’t get everywhere. Here are some other “food for thought”.
Improves our local economy. Helps support small-to mid-size local farms by giving them business.
Local food is often more nutritious. Because it’s not shipped long distances, locally grown food is often tasty and healthy. To keep food from going bad during travel, some fruits and veggies are picked before they are able to completely ripen and absorb nutrients. While this allows produce to ripen en route so consumers have access to fresh foods year-round, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says this means foods often lack nutrients that would be there if allowed to ripen before being picked and shipped.
Not being shipped means less diesel fuel needed for trucking – better for our environment.
Offers great variety. This not only means fresh fruit and vegetables, but also meat, cheese and other dairy products, nuts and even baked items.
Join us in The Argyle for Chef Molly’s evening creations or call ahead for carryout or curbside service, 816.541.2452.

Turf Talk
STEVE GRIESINGER, COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
T
HINGS ARE BEGINNING TO HEAT up here at LOCC. As the temperatures and humidity go up,
so does the amount of hand watering and the disease pressure. You will be noticing personnel out on the greens doing some hand watering. We like to hand water so we can control the water to
dry areas only and not overwater areas that have adequate moisture, to control fungus and to have the best putting surfaces. So please be patient with these employees as they will do their best to get out of your way when approaching the green. It sometimes takes a few seconds to get the hose rolled up. Also, even with an awesome irrigation system and a huge lake, there will be brown or off colors areas around the course - especially the areas that have horrible soil and the outer edges of the irrigation system where there is not proper coverage. Hot and humid weather can bring on disease issues that will affect our turf grass, as well as your yards. Be careful of overwatering grass. Just because it is turning a little off color green and a little brown does not mean it is from heat stress or lack of water. Fungus loves hot, humid temps and loves to be overwatered making for even better environment for disease. Heat stress from a little less watering is easier to handle than fungus. I look forward to seeing you on the course!

From the LOCC Golf Club Committee Let’s Get To Know Some of Our Newest Members Doug Horn: After 30 years of living in Lakewood, the Horn Family has
finally joined Lakewood Oaks Country Club! Pictured are Doug and Sara Horn with their two children, Mary and Doug. Mary and Doug are home this summer before returning to school in the fall. The Horns are looking forward to great family fun on the course this summer, hoping for a par or two and a good meal at the Argyle.
Steve Effertz: We just celebrated our 43rd anniversary June 10. Leila doesn’t
play golf so I joined as single. I was member approximately 25 years ago - so returning to the fold! I’m a lawyer with Schaffer, McIntosh & Effertz (Larry Schaffer is both my brother-in-law and former law partner; since he’s retired) and been in practice about 41 years. I’ve joined up with Larry’s golf group and now getting to play a couple of times a week. Since COVID-19, I’ve had more free time, and look forward to playing a lot of golf and getting to know more fellow golfers. Leila is retired church secretary. We have son and daughter who live and work in Lee’s Summit and three grandkids.
Mitch Dopp: Lauren and I have been married for 3 ½ years. We currently
live in Overland Park, but I grew up in Lakewood. Lauren is from Kirkwood, MO. We both graduated from the University of Missouri. I served six years in the Marine Corps Reserves. I grew up playing football, basketball and baseball. I didn’t really start playing golf until I got to college, but I am currently training to make a run at the Champions Tour in 2038. I’m in a family business, ROS Office Furniture. We supply commercial businesses with high-end new and preowned office furniture. My wife is a civil engineer with Burns & McDonnell and specializes in green infrastructure – water department
Marc Murphy: Hey, there. Just a single guy with no kids that runs a
LOCAL pub :) My family consists of two awesome dogs, and I spend my free time shooting pool or chasing a white ball all over people’s back yards. I’m a motorcycle and classic car enthusiast. Traveler. And mostly just a big fun idiot.
Matt Perry: I am with my son Hayden, playing in a local parent-child tour-
nament last August. We have lived in Lakewood for almost three years, but just joined the golf club recently. Hayden has been golfing with his mother and I since he was three, and we really enjoy spending the time together as a family. Lakewood is a beautiful course (and neighborhood) to call home, and we are very excited to be members of the course and the community!

Welcome back to the Lakewood Clubhouse, the Argyle Restaurant, and a new art exhibit by local artist Dick Lacy. Dick’s unique art is already on display in the Argyle Gallery and will be until mid-July. Dick and his wife JoAnn have happily lived in Lakewood for 13 years. After Dick designed and built a home for Paul Splittorff, the pitcher recommended his builder to other players. Dick ended up building homes for 13 additional Royals players. He spent 40 successful years building single homes and developments throughout the area.
Dick has been retired
In 2015, Dick’s life was interrupted by cancer, and those difficult times helped him find a way of expression that was unique to him. Dick has produced over 400 pieces of work since he began, and a few of his favorites are now on display for you to see and appreciate. He refers to his art as Graphic Design.

Dick and JoAnn met during his time in the USAF, while he was assigned to Whiteman AFB.
