From the General Manager, Mark Reid As we enter the last quarter of our fiscal year, we are sweetening the great deal already offered by our very popular 40th Anniversary promotion. New members can join October 1 - December 15, 2019 under the applicable golf membership category in the 40th Anniversary Promotion AND pay no dues until the January billing. That’s right, a bonus of up to three (3) months of golf for those who join quickly. We are also rewarding our loyal members this fall. For every new member that is brought in as a referral and the referring member is listed on

the new membership contract, that loyal member will get a $100 golf shop credit. We want you to know that we value the importance of our membership in getting the word out and recruiting new members. We have had a great 40th Anniversary. We will be working hard to continue the momentum of adding new members through the end of the year to assure that we don’t lose ground again through normal attrition. The Snazzy Jazzy fundraising event held at the Club last month was a huge success! I was so proud of all of the Garden Club members who spent countless hours planning and hosting this classy evening. This event will yield more of the timeless and beautiful art that is located throughout

Stop by and pick up some gifts – and something for yourself.

H

OW DID YOU PLAY?

What did you shoot? These are two of the most asked questions at The Club. Well, one group last month had an answer that has never been uttered

in the 40 years that Lakewood Oaks has been in existence. When Rick Sutcliffe brought out a group of guests, he knew one if his guests had the potential to shoot a really good score. Even though his guest had only played Lakewood a handful of times,

he ended up shooting the unofficial course record of 61 that day. To be fair, his guest Robert Streb, is a PGA Tour winner and has had great success in his professional career. Streb’s 10-under-par round bested the old unofficial course record of 63 (Tyler Brown & Tom Pernice, Jr) by two shots. Whether you are playing to break your personal best or the course record, the scorecard pictured below might just give you a bit of extra motivation. Brian welcome all questions and suggestions, so feel free to contact him 816.541.2455 or brian@logc.org.

If a ball is found in that time but it is uncertain whether it is your ball, you must promptly attempt to identify the ball and are allowed a reasonable time to do so, even if that happens after the three-minute search time has ended. This includes a reasonable time to get to the ball if you are not where the ball is found. If you do not identify your ball in that reasonable time, the ball is lost. If the ball is lost you must take relief using the stroke and distance penalty.

A

QUICK LEAF THROUGH

the Rules of Golf reminds us that the ‘Leaf Rule’ is golf ’s version of Sasquatch. Does it exist? No. Consider that if you hit a ball into deep rough and are confident it’s in a certain area, you still have to find it. Same thing with leaves, with an exception, and you have three minutes to locate your ball. When Ball Is Found: Leaves may be considered an abnormal ground condition when they meet the definition of ground under repair: grass cuttings, leaves and any other material piled for later removal. But, any natural materials that are piled for removal are also loose impediments. If a player’s ball is in the general area and there is interference by

an abnormal course condition on the course, the player may take free relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in the relief area. (See Rule 14.3):

The Exception: If a player’s ball has not been found and it is known or

virtually certain that the ball came to rest in or on an abnormal course condition on the course, the player may use this relief option instead of taking stroke-and-distance relief: • The player may take relief under Rule 16.1b, c or d, using the estimated point where the ball last crossed the edge of the abnormal course condition on the course as the spot of the ball for purposes of finding the nearest point of complete relief. • Once the player puts another ball in play to take relief in this way: – The original ball is no longer in play and must not

be played. – This is true even if it is then found on the course before the end of the three-minute search time (See Rule 6.3b) But if it is not known or virtually certain that the ball came to rest in or on an abnormal course condition and the ball is lost, the player must take stroke-anddistance relief under Rule 18.2.

• Reference Point: The nearest point of complete relief in the general area • Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: One club-length, but with these limits: • Limits on Location of Relief Area: – Must be in the general area, – Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and – There must be complete relief from all interference by the abnormal course condition. Recipe Preparation

If you haven’t soaked the beans, do a power soak: Place beans in a large pot, cover with water by 1”, and bring to a boil over high heat. As soon as the water comes to a boil, remove pot from heat, stir in a palmful of salt, cover pot, and let beans sit 1 hour. Pulse carrots, leek, and garlic in a food processor until finely chopped. Heat ⅓ cup oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium. Add chopped and diced vegetables, season generously with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring often, until vegetables start to sweat out some of their liquid, about 4 minutes. Vegetables should be very soft but have still have their color. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover pot, and cook, stirring every 5 minutes or so and reducing heat if mixture starts to brown, until vegetables are softened and juicy, about 15 minutes.

Recipe of the Month: Pasta e Fagioli

If you are ready for some warm, delicious soup, Pasta E Fagioli takes a little time, but well worth the effort. It has lots of fall vegetables and yummy seasonings. Serve with a crusty bread. enjoy!

Ingredients

1 can small artichoke hearts, coarsely chopped 6 garlic cloves ⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling Freshly ground black pepper 1 smoked ham hock 1 15-oz. can whole peeled tomatoes 1 bunch Tuscan kale, ribs and stems removed, leaves torn 1–2 Parmesan rinds (optional) 2 bay leaves 1 Tablespoon chiffonde fresh basil 8 oz. small pasta (such as ditalini) Finely grated Parmesan, crushed red pepper flakes, crusty bread (for serving)

Add ham hock and cook, uncovered, stirring and scraping bottom of pot every 5 minutes, until soffritto is starting to brown in places and has lost at least half of its volume, about 10 minutes more. Add beans and their soaking liquid, tomatoes, and kale; season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then add Parmesan rinds (if using), basil and bay leaves. Reduce heat to medium-low and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook soup with lid askew, adding water (or stock, if you have it) as needed to keep beans submerged by 1”, until beans are very tender, 1–3 hours, depending on size and age of beans. Fish out and discard Parmesan rinds. Remove ham hock and use a fork to pull meat off the bone. Return meat to soup; discard bone and any large pieces of fat. Cook pasta in a large pot of boiling well-salted water, stirring occasionally, until very al dente, about 3 minutes less than package directions. Drain pasta and add to soup, then taste and season with more salt

Lodi has been a hub of agriculture, including grape growing, in California’s Central Valley for many decades. Much of the grape production has always been simple table grapes. Wine grapes were grown too, but most were of ordinary quality and ended up blended in large production jug wine brands. The Lange family settled in the Lodi area in the 1870’s and grew watermelons. By the very early 1900’s, the Langes expanded their farming to a variety of food products, including grapes. Like many area farmers, most of the wine grapes were sold to large producers. Fourth generation twins, Randall and Brad, took an active role, and quality over quantity become a serious goal. The fifth generation would attend colleges and return to the family wine growing operation with bigger plans. In 2006, the Lange family built a winery and began producing wine from the vineyards they had tended for decades. Having farmed the land for generations,

the family knew the best grapes for the wines they wanted to produce. The Lange family has emphasized renewable energy and soil, air and water management in the vineyard. The family has also been a driving force in developing “Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing”. Gen 5 “Old Vines” Zinfandel combines grapes from 90-year-old vines for complexity with 20- year-old vines which add bright fruit. There is plenty of spicy fruit showing in this wine to match up with hearty pastas and Kansas City BBQ. You can find this vertical wine at The Argyle by the glass or bottle. Come by on Friday evenings and with the purchase of an entrée, you can get the bottle half price. A great wine for a great price!

A great wine for a great price!

conditions continue, the greens will get firm and fast. This makes for great golfing conditions, so come out and enjoy. Rough renovations will continue with aerification, seeding, and fertilization. We have intentionally not aerified the green banks, as it is very intrusive to golf play. With the plugs and thatch laying around the greens, it makes it a problem,

not only for golfers, but also for machines mowing the greens and green banks. This maintenance will be done sometime in late fall/ early winter when golf play is slower and the grass needs less water and mowing. Enjoy the weather and hope to see you on the course!

Fitness Tip of the Month ALICIA ZELLER, RAISING Z BAR FITNESS

Have you ever found yourself running late to the course and your anxiety starts building as you think of what needs to be done before you tee off? If you find yourself in a situation like this, sometimes it is better to skip the big bucket of balls and take a few minutes to warm up the body and get mentally ready for the game. It is important for you to find your rhythm before you hit the golf course. This can be difficult when you’re pressed for time. As you start walking to the driving range or golf course, you could start whistling. Whistling neutralizes your energy and it can relax your stress. Whether you have plenty of time or you’re running late, it is important that you stretch before you play. Stretching can increase your range of motion, provide more power and possibly result in a longer drive. Start at the top of your body with 10-15 arm circles, and then switch directions for 10-15. Next, swing your arms across your body a few times. These stretches activate your shoulders, back and chest, along with finding your body’s rhythm.

HIP TWIST. While standing, rotate your hips back and forth, a little twist to get a rotation going. This movement will prepare your body for striking the ball. Slow practice swing with two clubs in your hands, repeat a few times.

LEG SWINGS FORWARD AND BACK. Place your club in front of you and lean on the handle. Spend 20 seconds swinging the leg forward and back, then switch legs for 20 seconds. This stretch will work the hamstrings, quads and glutes. It will also help maintain your posture.

LEG SWINGS SIDE TO SIDE. While the club is still in your hands, take your leg in and then swing out to the side and then across you. Repeat on opposite leg. This stretch works on your hip adductors and abductor stabilizing your hips.

SQUATS. This will get your lower body warmed up. Make sure the knees don’t pass your toes. Doing a few of these stretches will help you find your rhythm, warm your body up and increase your range of motion while decreasing your stress.

From the LOCC Golf Club Committee CARING FOR THE COURSE

In the interest of maximizing the pride we all have in our golf course here at Lakewood, your Golf Committee is excited to launch a “Caring for the Course” program. The goal of this program is to add just a little extra TLC to the great work Steve and his crew already do on the course every day. We’ve all stood on any given hole and seen a smattering of broken tees laying on and around the tee box, a few fairway divots left unattended, or more, fresh ball marks on a green than are players in your group. While we all step up and address a few of those situations, it’s a daunting and pace-of-play-impacting task to think each of us can fix everything we see. So, the Golf Committee isn’t asking that you fix everything, but on top of your normal care, please give a special focus on just ONE HOLE assigned to you. The staff has assigned holes based on a member’s last name, and assigned an equal number of members to each hole.

Lakewood Oaks Country Club The celebration of family, a tradition of civility and a commitment to excellent facilities and services will always be the hallmarks of Lakewood Oaks Country Club. Members embrace a shared tradition of congeniality, high standards of personal conduct and continuity of family association. Set amidst grand oak trees and surrounded by picturesque lakes, the 6300-yard golf club community’s natural environment provides an exquisite backdrop, imparting a celebrated tradition of luxury and geniality that members have treasured since the Club’s earliest beginnings. An immediate sense of serenity can be felt by all who enter. Members and their guests enjoy a bustling lifestyle that is both casual and relaxed, yet refined and exclusive. The Lakewood Oaks Country Club is a place to gather with family and friends and celebrate what is truly important in life, with the people who matter most.

What can I do to assist in “Caring for the Course”? • On your hole, clear the tee-box of broken tees and place them in the box (par 3s) or put them in the trash. • Replace or tamp down divots on tee box or in fairway. • Pick up any sticks you happen to walk by in the rough. • Repair unattended ball marks on the green. • Ensure yourself and players in your group are entering the sand bunkers from the low side and properly raking after playing. • Take note of anything on your hole that you think is array and bring it to the attention of Brian Bateman.
