November 2019

From the General Manager, Mark Reid November is the month to remember what we are truly thankful for. Family, friends, health and wellbeing are generally at the top of our list each year. For those of us who serve our members in this Country Club environment, we place our members at the top of the list, as well. Every day we are privileged to be able to interact with our membership and hear their stories and get to know them as if we were all family and friends. For this we are truly thankful, and on behalf of all of the Staff of the Lakewood Oaks Country Club, we wish you a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving. As we finish the year we are focused on the performance of Food and Beverage.

We have made some efficiency changes to reduce overhead while maintaining the quality expectations of our food and beverage offerings. We have also extended the Happy Hour to 6:30, which affords our customers an extra hour of savings. We are seeing a rebound after a soft summer. I hope you all take advantage of the Argyle and the St. Andrews Pub through the holidays, and let’s finish the year in grand style. The New Year’s party this year will be very remarkable! Dance music will be provided by MultiPhonic, and the whole vibe will be sure to please all age groups who attend. This is one of KC’s top-tier R&B party bands.

Wine of the Month TRENTADUE OPR RED

A GREAT DEAL JUST GOT BETTER!

For many years, the Trentadue family tended cherry and apricot orchards in what we now know as Silicon Valley. As development crept in to Sunnyvale in the 1950s, Evelyn and Leo Trentadue looked to move farming operations elsewhere. In 1959, land was plentiful and inexpensive in Alexander Valley of Northern Sonoma County and the Trentadues sold their orchards in South Bay and moved north to Geyserville. Like the Sunnyvale property, the Alexander Valley farm included a number of fruit orchards, but also a smattering of wine grape vineyards.

JOIN THE CLUB NOW PAY NO DUES UNTIL JANUARY 2020

By the mid-1960s, the Trentadue family was concentrating more and more on grape growing. Soon they were making and bottling their own wine under the Trentadue Family label. For over 50 years, the Trentadue family has been producing a variety of high quality wines, but specializing in red wines from mostly their estate vineyards. Some of the Trentadue vineyards were planted in the late 1800s. It was then common for Italian immigrants to plant an array of different red grape varieties in the same vineyard. Wines produced from these vineyards are called field blends. One particular vineyard block produced distinctive and flavorful wines, and Trentadue “Old Patch Red” was born. The popularity of OPR has forced Trentadue Winery to expand grape sourcing to other estate vineyards and neighboring vineyards, but OPR has maintained its style. The current release is a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignan and Syrah. It delivers full-bodied, dark fruit flavors that match well with straightforward and hearty fare like pizza, burgers and red sauce pastas.

PREFERRED LIES OR “WINTER RULES”

NOVEMBER November 28 Golf course/shop closed for Thanksgiving

DECEMBER When occasional local abnormal conditions might interfere with fair play, the affected parts of the course can be defined as ground under repair. But adverse conditions such as heavy snows, spring thaws, prolonged rains or extreme heat can sometimes damage the course or prevent use of heavy mowing equipment. When such conditions are widespread on the course, the Committee can choose to adopt a Local Rule for “preferred lies” (also known as “winter rules”) to allow fair play or help protect the fairway. Such a Local Rule should be withdrawn as soon as conditions allow. There are drawbacks to adopting preferred lies: First and foremost, implementing this Local Rule conflicts with the fundamental principle of playing the ball as it lies. It also generally tends to lower scores and a player’s handicap index. Although a player and handicap committee may not see an issue with this, it can be

10 LAKEWOOD OAKS COUNTRY CLUB

penalizing in a competition when the player cannot play preferred lies. The truth is that scores made using preferred lies are acceptable for handicap posting purposes, but players and handicap committees alike should be judicious in implementing them. Consulting the club’s handicap committee for guidance and exercising good judgment when applying the Local Rule independently is the best course of action to ensure the accuracy of a Handicap Index. AN EXAMPLE OF THIS LOCAL RULE MAY LOOK LIKE THIS:

“When a player’s ball lies in a part of the general area cut to fairway height or less [or identify a specific

area such as ‘on the fairway of the 6th hole’], the player may take free relief once by placing the original ball or another ball in and playing it from this relief area: • Reference Point: Spot of the original ball. • Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: [Specify size of relief area, such as one clublength, one scorecard length or 6 inches] from the reference point, but with these limits: • Limits on Location of Relief Area: – Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and – Must be in the general area.

Ingredients 3 Tbsp. unsalted butter 4 shallots, finely chopped 1 russet potato, peeled and diced into 1-inch cubes 1 Tbsp. minced ginger 6 ripe, sweet pears (Bartlett or Bosc), peeled and diced 1 tsp chopped fresh sage 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves

½ tsp ground cardamom 3 Tbsp. maple syrup 32 oz. chicken stock ½ cup heavy cream Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Gorgonzola Dolce, crumbled (for garnish) Hazelnuts, toasted and chopped (for garnish

Preparation Melt butter in a large pot over medium-low heat. Add shallots and cook until soft and translucent, 5 minutes. If the shallots begin to brown, lower heat. Add potato and cook undisturbed for another 5-10 minutes. Add ginger and cook for another minute. Add pear, sage, thyme, cardamom and maple syrup and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add chicken stock and bring to a simmer; simmer for 15 minutes or until potatoes and pears are very soft. Remove from heat. Add soup to blender 1 ½ cups at a time and puree until smooth. Liquid will still be very hot so do not add more than a third the capacity of the blender at a time. Once the entire mixture has been pureed, return to pot and add cream; reheat over medium-low heat. Season with salt and pepper to taste; add more maple syrup as needed. Serve topped with Gorgonzola Dolce and hazelnuts.

Indoor practice was about the only option for a few months last winter in Kansas City area. Unfortunately, there is currently not an area at the LOCC clubhouse that can accommodate indoor practice. However, we have come up with a temporary solution as we continue to explore options at LOCC. We are pleased to announce that Lakewood Oaks Country Club members will have a special 25% discount with Jess Hansen Golf Academy.

Turf Talk STEVE GRIESINGER, COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

As I sit here typing this article on Halloween Eve, it is sleeting and snowing. Hopefully the weather will turn for the better in November, as the Board of Directors has approved the removal of the four trees at the dog leg on the right side of fairway. The contractor and I will be in constant communication to have this done when ground is solid enough to handle the equipment. So please be on the lookout for this activity.

when it is dormant. We will remain with this program until the zoysia fairways begin turning back to their green color in the spring.

As the weather begins to turn colder, the carts will be allowed off the paths (weather permitting), however, please keep the carts in the rough as much as possible, as the zoysia grass cannot handle cart traffic

The greens are really good right now. I have heard that comment several times this fall. I hate to say it, but it is directly related to the weather. When the daytime temps do not get any higher than 60-70 degrees, we can do some things to

At some point time in November, we will install two pins on the greens to reduce wear and tear as the greens begin to freeze. The greens freeze sooner and easier than other turf areas due to the sand base and lower turf height. Please move the flags from one hole to the other as your group plays throughout the winter. We will change the pins as weather permits during the winter months.

golf greens that can create ball speed. I have also heard, “I wish the greens were like this all year around”. If we had temperatures just like we have in the fall, the greens could be like this all year around. The problem is we don’t have weather like this in the summer. Also the height of cut on the greens has not changed one time all year. You might ask, “How do you create ball speed without changing the height of cut?” There are several different ways: rolling, topdressing, brooming, less moisture, verticutting, growth regulators etc.) So enjoy while the weather is good. Hope to see you on the course soon.

Fitness Tip of the Month ALICIA ZELLER, RAISING Z BAR FITNESS

As we close the golf season, it is time to think about the off season and what you can do to improve next season. As you reflect on this past season, what do you feel your strengths and weaknesses were? Self-awareness is the key to any success. If you have the ability to recognize your own thoughts and emotions, you will become successful in your golf game, relationships, business and overall life.

Self-awareness is a

Self-awareness helps you become more self-aware. As I tell my clients, “You don’t know until you know.” The more you know, the more you can adapt yourself towards healthier behaviors. What makes you tick? What are your habits? What are you thinking when you play golf well? What are your thoughts when you don’t play as well? Once you start practicing self-awareness, you start figuring out what you want, and you begin to pay attention to things that cause poor performance. The more you know, the more you can begin to shift your attention and focus on your best skills. By practicing self-awareness, you will discover what makes you perform at your best.

confidence, not only in

A few things you can do to help improve self-awareness in golf is to keep a performance journal. Write a brief summary of your game and mention your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and results of the game. Notice any patterns? How are you feeling about yourself? Are you being complimentary or self-critical? What kind of day did you have? Did you work? Was work stressful? The more information you include, the better you get to know yourself!

mind strengthening and

Meditation can also help your performance. Meditating just three minutes a day can affect your electromagnetic field and your blood circulation. Meditating not only lowers your heart rate and stress levels, it will also help you be more self-aware in your thoughts and feelings.
