NEWSLETTER OF THE LAKEWOOD OAKS COUNTRY CLUB

New Year’s Eve Party THE PRO SHOP

Golf Like a Pro LAKEWOODOAKSCC.COM

December 2019

From the General Manager, Mark Reid It has been a wonderful year. As staff, we witnessed a very fun and energetic Club this year, as well as larger tournament participation. We feel that this is an indicator, along with an overall increase in attendance of our Club social events and dining, that the resurgence of the Golf and Country Club lifestyle in the Midwest is beginning. It has been over five years where industry analysts have stated that “flat is the new up”. We are pleased to believe that we are exiting this period.

We have just finished our last project of the year, and now sunlight will once again shine on the area of #2 fairway and eliminate the chronic winter kill of the zoysia. The remaining stumps will be ground down by the grounds crew, and the fairway and rough will be rejuvenated in late spring/ early summer. We now set our sights on next year and furthering our method of continuous improvement. We are planning improvements to the main hallway between the Golf Shop and the Pub, as well as the Golf Shop beginning in January.

Table of Contents

From all of the staff at the Lakewood Oaks Country Club, we wish you a safe an joyous Christmas holiday, as well as a prosperous new year.

4 Golf Like a Pro 5 The Pro Shop

This year’s New Year’s Eve 2020 celebration will be spectacular! We will have streaming video and entertaining media on three screens throughout the Banquet Room. The Multiphonics band will have everyone dancing up to, and beyond, midnight. If you haven’t made reservations and wish to attend, please make them soon, as we are well on the way to this being a sold out event.

will be a lot of planning and preparation happening over the next few months for 2020, the main focus will be adjusting to the World Handicap System. The R&A and USGA have combined efforts to revamp the handicap system. While the goal of the new World Handicap System is the same as the old GHIN system, most calculations and processes will be modified. Lakewood Oaks’ Handicap Committee is working to get the information out to the membership, implementing all the changes for the MGA and WGA events, and putting all required and encouraged safeguards into effect to protect all handicapped competitions and casual play. Committee or Golf Shop for clarification, as I am certain that others will have similar questions. Three major changes for us right out of the gate: • We will continue to post scores until December 31, 2019, at Lakewood Oaks. • All players must have a unique email address associated with their World Handicap System handicap (two players cannot use the same email address). If you are sharing an email address with another person, please contact the golf shop so that we can get that changed. • January and February we will not be able to post scores from the Kansas City Area. Even though the Handicap Committee will be breaking down the World

Handicap System into relevant pieces for Lakewood Oaks, let’s consider this a data dump for those that want to go through the entire 128 pages of the new system. In order to view the new handicap manual, simply click on this hyperlink https://fsga.org/ files/cm/Rules%20of%20Handicapping_USGA_Final.pdf. Wine of the Month 2016 TRUCHARD CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Tony and Jo Ann Truchard met in Texas, where they were both born and raised. Shortly after marrying in 1964, Tony graduated from medical school and completed his internship at Walter Reed Memorial Army hospital. After his residency in San Antonio, Tony received orders to report to Korea to serve as an Army Medical Officer. However, what would later prove to be a touch of irony as Jo Ann slipped on a grape in a grocery store and broke her knee less than a week before delivering their fourth child. Realizing the potential hardship, the Army rescinded Tony’s Korea orders and sent Tony and family to northern California. Tony and family would explore northern California on the weekends and one excursion would lead them to Napa Valley. Tony, with some farming experience as a boy, thought owning a vineyard would be a fun hobby. The Truchards harvested their first grapes in 1974. Over the years, the Truchards purchased 400 contiguous acres in the Carneros region of southern Napa Valley. Grapes from the Truchard estate became highly sought after by many prestigious Napa Valley wineries. Often the Truchard name would be featured prominently on the labels of top producers.

The Carneros district, with climate influenced by the San Pablo Bay, is often too cool for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to fully ripen. However, a hilly portion of the Truchard’s vineyards, with southwestern facing slopes, provides an excellent site for growing Cabernet. The 2016 Truchard Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Malbec, is full and complex, yet is elegant and balanced. The deep flavors of cassis and blackberry will match well with a great steak. The Argyle carries this lovely wine. ECEMBER AT THE

Clubhouse will be hopping! We have specials and handcrafted, holiday cocktails all month in The Argyle (plus the regular menu). There are special events scheduled, holiday get-togethers at the bar and dinner with friends. The Culinary Staff here at LOCC is ready to make your visit a memorable one. Reservations are highly recommended by calling 816.541.2452. We hope to see you soon. It’s also the season of giving and paying it forward. Going on seven years of volunteering, some of the Culinary Team from The Clubhouse will be joining

me early Christmas morning -4:00 a.m. - preparing meals for retired KCPD Richard White’s Annual Senior Citizens Christmas Dinner. This dinner has been going on for 40 years and is attended by hundreds of senior citizens without a place to go for Christmas. I’m proud of these team members. They take time away from their young children and families to help others. Also, I want to thank our Culinary Team for supporting the ‘Socks for the Homeless Drive’ that is going on at the Clubhouse until December 20. Everyone is welcome to give by dropping off new socks under the Christmas tree in the Clubhouse lobby.

Ingredients 1 large egg One 8-ounce wheel Brie One 17.25-ounce package of frozen puff pastry (2 sheets), thawed All-purpose flour, for dusting 1/3 cup whole-berry cranberry sauce Executive Chef Molly Myers was recognized by Forbes Magazine as an up-andcoming culinary rock star. From her stint at Hotel Oread in Lawrence, KS, to her experience running Broadview Country Club in Carthage, MO, Chef Molly’s menus have been celebrated by patrons and the press for years – including outstanding reviews by the Kansas City Star.

¼ cup quality orange marmalade ¼ cup walnuts, finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, finely chopped 2 teaspoons fresh chives, finely chopped

Preparation Directions: • Preheat oven at 425 degrees F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. • Whisk together the egg with 2 tablespoon of water in a small bowl for an egg wash. • Cut the sides rind off the Brie, then cut the Brie into 32 even pieces. Set aside. • Unfold a puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Roll out into a 13” square. Cut into 16 squares. Repeat with the second sheet so you have 32 squares total. • Mix cranberry sauce and orange marmalade together. • Top a pastry square with about ½ teaspoon the cranberry and marmalade mix, ¼ teaspoon walnuts, and pinch of Brie. • Combine chopped thyme leaves and chives and add a pinch to the top of each appetizer. • Use your finger or a pastry brush to brush the edges of the pastry square with egg wash until lightly coated and tacky. • Pinch 2 opposite points together, then pinch the remaining 2 points together so that you have a little package. Repeat with the remaining pastry square and filling. • Transfer the bites to the prepared baking sheets and brush with the remaining egg wash. Bake until puffed and gold brown, about 15-20 minutes.

Enjoy!

Playing golf during the winter months can add extra havoc to your golf game. Your body is cold with frozen fingers, the ground is hard, not to mention the extra layers you may have on. When you play golf during the winter months, it is imperative you stretch and warm up before you approach the first tee box. The most effective stretches you can do to warm your body up is “Dynamic stretches”. Dynamic stretches are different from “static” stretches. Dynamic stretches are movement based stretches that prepare your muscles and joints for use. There is no holding in a position as the traditional “static” stretch. Dynamic stretching will help improve performance in your sport, increases full range of motion, and decreases the risk of injury. Doing dynamic stretches will help raise your body heat by circulating the blood and oxygen to your muscles, loosen your muscles and lubricate your joints. A few dynamic stretches you can do beforehand or while you’re playing are:

Fitness Tip of the Month

ARM CIRCLES

Advertise your business in ClubLife!

Raise your arms to shoulder level and start making circles with your hand at moderate speed and then widen your circle. Reverse directions

TORSO TWIST Hold your driver overhead with hands wide as possible, and twist your body side to side. Slight bend in your knees and keep your hips and legs stable, core is engaged as you twist your body back and forth.

LEG SWINGS Hold a club at your side if you need it for balance and swing your leg front to back. Repeat on the other side.

Contact Kathy@lpoa.com

Aim for 15-20 reps for each exercise. If you find yourself “freezing” while playing, run/jog in place or do jumping jacks for a minute until your body warms up. Keep in mind that dynamic stretches will help your golf game during all seasons of the year. These stretches will prepare your body before you play. Allow 5-7 minutes of stretching as part of your warmup. During the winter months it’s imperative you warm up your muscles to avoid injury.
