From the General Manager, Mark Reid May brings us one step closer to full normal operations here at the Lakewood Oaks Country Club. All of our outdoor activities will be done without a mask. Inside the Clubhouse, Jackson County still has a mask mandate in effect. We are watching this closely as Johnson County, KS, has dropped their mask mandate. The four counties of the metropolitan region have generally acted in concert with each other over the past year. We know many of our members have been vaccinated and are following CDC guidelines for being around other vaccinated individuals. We are back to two per cart, and this has greatly improved cart maintenance and availability.
We are focused forward on a fun summer and lots of great golf. Needless to say, we are focused forward on a fun summer and lots of great golf. We have installed new chilled water fountains with bottle fillers at the restrooms buildings on no. 5 and no. 15. These fountains are operational, and we believe this will return us to an adequate water supply while on the golf course. We are very pleased that April and May have presented, so far, optimal weather for the Golf Course grasses. Steve and his crew have been very busy this spring and the result is that our course is in great condition.
Ms. Rachel Yaros joins our Lakewood Oaks Team as the new Art & Communications Director, a shared position between the Lakewood Property Owners Association and The Lakewood Oaks Country Club.
Ms. Yaros will be managing the graphics and marketing communication needs throughout Lakewood utilizing her specializations in visual graphic design and branding to help us enhance our member communication, as well as our social media outreach. You may reach her at rachel@lpoa.com

Help Keep Your Practice Range in the Best Shape Possible We would all enjoy a larger grass hitting area on the practice range, however we are virtually landlocked. That does not mean that we are stuck with a subpar hitting area. Instead it means that it takes a bit more budget and maintenance time, and most importantly a better way to hit shots. To maximize the use of the grass on the driving range tee, please place your ball at the grassy back edge of your previous divot, removing just a small portion of grass with each swing.
Step 1 Practice in a linear pattern by placing each new shot directly behind the previous divot.
STEP 2 Leave a strip of turf between each line of divots roughly 4” wide.

Though May 5 is in the past, I thought you might enjoy this marinade you can put on any meat to give it that special kick!

CHEF’S WHIM: RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Cinco de Mayo Marinade Ingredients: • • • • • • •
1 tablespoon Cumin 2 teaspoons Taco Seasoning 1 teaspoon Onion Powder 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder 3 tablespoons Olive Oil 1 tablespoon Wine Vinegar Juice of 1 Lime
Directions: Put all ingredients into a small bowl and whisk. Place steak, chicken or pork in a zip lock bag. Add Marinade. Coat the protein. Seal and refrigerate at least one hour. You can also add this to 1 pound of hamburger. Mix well and shape into patties and grill.

WGA WGA (LOWGA) The 2021 WGA season started on April 24 without annual Opening Day Event. It was a beautiful day to see our returning WGA members as well as meet some of the new members! The “Go Low Shamble” paired golfers of all abilities together to create a fun event for all. Congratulations to Logan Moresi, Sheri Rehmer, Cindy Jackson-Kiley, Val Young, Mary Pat Burson and Joanie Hartnett on winning the first KC Cup match of the season versus the Deuce! Lakewood Oaks won two out of the three matches played. Great job, ladies! We have some great events scheduled for May. In addition to the Wednesday and Saturday play dates, we will be hosting a Guest Day on Wednesday, May 5 and the Two-Lady Scramble on Saturday, May 8. To Tree, Or Not To Tree Presented by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America

To the golfer, the biggest hazards on the golf course are bunkers, ponds, creeks and gullies. To the golf course superintendent, the biggest hazards on the golf course can be trees.
But the first responsibility for any superintendent is to provide a highquality playing surface based on the available resources. Unfortunately, trees compete with turf for the basic nutrients needed to flourish – oxygen, water and sunlight. This battle is waged most often near putting greens and tees where trees often form an amphitheater-like setting. As the trees encroach the closely cropped turf on the putting and teeing surfaces, they restrict airflow and sunlight while using up the available nutrients. To compensate, fans will be placed in these areas to aid air circulation, but sometimes that tactic is but a short-term solution. With apologies
Perhaps unlike any sport, golfers have a special affection for their playing surface. Golfers talk about golf courses with a reverence that should be reserved for a temple or shrine. Rare is there such admiration expressed for a tennis court, a soccer field or a basketball court. Because of their affinity for the golf course, golfers often cringe at the prospects of having trees trimmed or removed. After all, the tree could be a memorial to a friend or family member, it may have been planted by school children or its life may parallel that of the golfer. Whatever the reason, tree maintenance is not as easy as pulling the chainsaw cord. The most important part of a tree maintenance
To hear one complain about trees is almost blasphemous. After all, poet Joyce Kilmer wrote that “poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree.” It’s not that superintendents dislike trees. To the contrary, one of the primary reasons superintendents choose the profession is because they enjoy working with the environment. In fact, golf course superintendents closely monitor the health of trees because they do enhance the

program may be communicating the reasons why such action is necessary. Turf health is one issue and human health is another. Tree maintenance programs are important to reduce the risk of falling limbs that could potentially harm golfers. As a means to reduce their liability, some golf facilities have communicated and have enacted well-defined policies regarding tree risk reduction policies. In addition to turf quality and safety, the strategy of play is frequently determined by trees. Golf course architects use trees to define boundaries such as separating fairways, creating doglegs, providing for depth perception and making challenges by blocking a certain angle of entry.

Superintendents must take into account how the course was intended to play before tree modifications or plantings are enacted. Often times the golf course designer is long gone after a course has matured and grown. Trees that did not affect the strategy based on the original layout mature and create shot making that is contrary to the original intent. Despite the emotional attachment to trees, a well-planned and executed tree maintenance program often gains quick acceptance, even among the most ardent foes. Under the direction of the golf course superintendent and assisted by a golf course architect and skillful arborist, tree maintenance can be executed with the results being barely noticeable to even the keenest eye. In the end, all benefit as turf quality improves, safety is enhanced and the course plays in the manner in which it was intended.

Lakewood Artists Exhibit Written by Patti Browder
Mike Lewis During the months of May and June, come by and revisit the photography of our talented neighbor, Mike Lewis, in the Argyle Gallery. We have enjoyed Mike’s photos several times in Lakewood, beginning with the first Lakewood Art Show in 2009.
Mike’s most recent exhibit in the Argyle Gallery was a travel photo journal from Cuba. The colorful photos captured the uniqueness of the country and its people, as well as a glimpse of the country’s rich history.

Summit Art photographers were given access to the Crestview Dairy Event Venue ahead of time and got to roam the 31 acres to capture images which were displayed during the April event. During the past year, Mike took advantage of the time at home to look through past images. He focused on learning new post-production techniques and experimenting with those new ideas to enhance the earlier photos.
While looking over old images, Mike says he came to realize how much his background as a journalist has influenced his craft. From the LOCC Golf Club Committee Optimizing Our Tee Sheet Golf season is officially underway, and we are starting with one of the highest membership levels we’ve seen in years at LOCC. With us being near max capacity, it has become really important that we help each other out by changing a few ways that we manage the tee sheet to maximize course access for everyone. We don’t want to have to turn away additional memberships or lose existing members just because we don’t effectively optimize the tee sheet. We have hit a key threshold of membership that each incremental member creates a materially positive impact on the budget flexibility for continued course improvement.
Please review the following Tee-Sheet Management Protocol When Booking a Tee Time on the Web site: List all the Members and/or Guests that are scheduled to play with you. If you don’t know each of the players at the time of booking the tee time, please use the “TBD” feature on the booking system. When Booking a Tee Time by Calling the Pro Shop: The Staff will be asking how many are in your group and the names. If you don’t know each of the players at the time of booking, the staff will use “TBD” as a placeholder. Updating TBDs on Your Tee Time: Once you have identified who you’re playing partners will be, please take the time to update those TBDs to player names or remove the TBDs if the size of your playing group changes. The Pro Shop staff will begin reaching out to those Peak Time tee times with TBDs still listed 48 hours from start time. Combining Groups During Peak Times: Just as is standard practice at premiere country clubs throughout the country, the Pro Shop staff will be working to combine playing groups to fill out Peak Time tee times. For example, if there is a twosome scheduled at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, the staff may ask to add another twosome to that tee time. This allows all members the greatest opportunity to tee times on the busiest days and an opportunity for members to potentially meet fellow members! Cancelling Tee Times: Call the Pro Shop or go online and cancel your reservation when your schedule changes and you can’t play. Check-In With Pro Shop Before Start of Your Round: As is standard with all golf clubs, the Pro Shop staff requests that we start having members check in with the Pro Shop before heading out to the first tee. This will allow for better communication and improve overall member experience. Let’s All Do Our Part: We’ve been able to be somewhat lackadaisical about the tee sheet the last several years but we need everyone to change a few habits to help sustain these membership levels.
