Lakewood PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION

August From the General Manager, Mark Reid

For over 45 years the Lakewood Property Owners Association has been communicating with the members of the Association through the Ripples magazine. In 2019, the means of communication is vastly different than it was in 1973. But with all the various options, we still publish the Ripples magazine and mail it to your homes, as the Ripples is the official communication medium for the Association. We also produce the electronic version that can be viewed on line. The issue you are reading today is the newest evolution of the Ripples magazine. We have contracted with a very talented graphic design firm to produce a fresh, fun and visually pleasing magazine. Not only does this professional publication enhance your viewing experience, we are also able to significantly reduce our annual costs of producing the magazine. We’re going to be using links to reduce some of the expense of the publication. As an example, if there were a five-page governing document that the Board changes the language within, in prior publications we would publish the entire document in the Ripples for sometimes up to three (3) months. Now, we will have a heading that informs the reader that the specific document has been changed pending membership review. Then there will be a link to click on (electronic version) or enter the address of the link into your browser in order to view the entire document with red-line changes. This reduces costs and frees up space for social content, advertising or other feature items of interest. We sincerely hope you enjoy reading this month’s edition. Additionally, our graphic design firm is also designing the ClubLife Newsletter. ClubLife is only published in electronic format and can be viewed at www.lakewoodoakscc.com. If you have questions about the Ripples or ClubLife or suggestions for interesting content or just want to submit your awesome photograph for consideration, please email Kathy Hoff, kathy@lpoa.com.

We wish you the best of what the remainder of the summer offers in Lakewood as we head into Labor Day. Enjoy our lakes and pools! In addition to the usual Board business, we are investigating some potential new agendas that we hope will improve and protect our amenities. We will be considering multiple items as we look forward to beginning the annual budget preparation process in September, which will culminate in a new Budget for 2020, approved in November. We enjoy hearing from you throughout the year, and together we will continue to improve our beautiful community.

Getting to Know your Pro-fessionals Steve Hancock, Patrol Supervisor/Codes Enforcement

I

t’s not an easy job to keep calm and carry on. That’s what Steve Hancock, Lakewood Property Owners Association Patrol Supervisor/Codes Enforcement person does every day. He’s the nice gentleman who receives members’ complaints and follows through to be sure they are taken care of. Steve started with LPOA in 1994 in the Maintenance Department and has been Patrol Supervisor since 2012. That’s 25 years of service to the LPOA. Every day is different, but he never gets tired of visiting with the members, whether they are the fishermen, club members or those who come to his office.

community service people and road community service drivers. They also take care of cleaning and fueling the rental pontoon boats and making sure folks get off safely for a few hours of fun on the lake. Leading up to the fireworks on the 4th of July, he gets all the permits and coordinates the details with others, including the Lee’s Summit Police Department, to be sure everything is run correctly and safely. Steve remembers a time he was out on the lake on a cold day with a co-worker. They were dressed appropriately in overalls, boots, and hats. His buddy asked him if he thought a person could swim with all that gear on. About that time, the boat tipped and Steve fell in. It only took him two seconds to climb back on board, as the water was freezing. After he got back from changing to dry clothes, the guys said, “Well, we answered that question!” If you’d like to talk with Steve, contact him at 816.541.2426 or steve@lpoa.com.

June Community Service Report Sean Bachtel, LPOA Director of Community Relations

First, there are many events that occur during the summer. The pools open Memorial Day Weekend, Wine and Nine Golf Tournament in June, the ever popular July 4th festivities and the Sail and Paddle Club broke the world’s record for people on a paddleboard on the same day that the Activities Committee hosted a luau, July 20. Once the kids are heading back to school in August, there’s the Concert on the Rock, then after Labor Day everyone attends the Smokin’ in Lakewood BBQ Competition. Huge kuddos to your Activities Committee volunteers that work tirelessly to bring you these wonderful events. Our staff certainly enjoys working with

this team to make the season so successful. Behind the scenes, though, it’s business as usual, although at a much heavier volume and faster pace. Between May and July, 151 architectural applications have been processed and reviewed, 239 violations have been opened (58 of which remain open), and 16 appeals have been processed and heard. A big thanks to Judy Alyea, Chairperson of ARB/ARC, Steve White, Chairperson of Appeals Committee, and their teams for handling the volume of work that goes into this process throughout the summer. And we’re only half way through the busy season.
