We are pleased to announce that Mr. Todd Schneekloth has joined us as our new Food and Beverage Director. Todd comes to us from the Lawrence Country Club where he served as their Executive Chef. Prior to his Country Club service, Todd managed the culinary services for a group of high-end hotels. As we have utilized a Food and Beverage Director position before, we are pleased to get back to this key position which assures that all sections of the Food and Beverage operations, kitchen, dining room, pub, banquet, snack bar, all work efficiently and in harmony for maximum customers, as well as stakeholder satisfaction. Todd’s strong culinary ability, crafted over 25 years of outstanding service, will complement Chef Molly’s role as Executive Chef and provide additional teamwork when required during the busiest of times. Please join me in welcoming Todd and getting to know him, as he is eager to get to know all of our members. We are also pleased that we are able to hire a U.S. Army veteran.

From the General Manager, Mark Reid

Looking back into Lakewood history, I remember the drought of 2012 when we were all praying for rain that seemed so elusive at the time. In August of 2012, the lake was over 10’ below full pool and many of our marina docks and pleasure docks were on the ground. In August of 2019, we are more than pleased that we have had a full lake for virtually the entire summer. In fact, when we are normally down several feet, due to evaporation during the hottest months of the year, we are currently spilling excess water in August. When we were in a drought, we studied the design criteria of the dam to make sure that we were doing everything possible and that the decline of lake level was just an anomaly. The lake was designed around a normal Missouri year whereas we would expect approximately 36” of annual rainfall. So, in my opinion, we are seeing a little higher rainfall than a normal Missouri summer, but we are all enjoying the benefit and the beauty of a full lake all summer long.

Lakewood Calendar of Events

From the Boardroom Larry Fields, Board President

Lakewood’s ‘official’ summer activities have come to an end. We had a successful swim season. We enjoyed the second year in our newly renovated pools. We made some improvements to the golf course. We even broke a world record! All in all, a very successful summer! And although summer may be ‘officially’ over, I expect there will be several more days of lake use remaining this year for those so inclined to use it. As I have said before, the lake is LPOA’s uniquely awesome asset. Over the years, several rules have been put in place to protect the lake and those using it. In response to suggestions, comments and emails from some of you, here are a few reminders. ighting: When your boat is operating at night, you should be runL ning your front lights and stern light (aka anchor light). You should not be driving around the lake with your docking lights on. They are not headlights. Driving with them on around the lake tends to make it difficult for others to see. I’m not sure what the official rules are for those led lights some of you have on your pontoons, but they look cool, and I’m jealous. “No-Wake”: Our lakes are “NO WAKE” lakes. This is for your safety and the safety of your neighbors. I’m confident everyone is aware of this rule. I’m equally confident that there are several of you that believe you are exempt from this rule. You are not. Boat Insurance: New this year, boat owners are required to have LPOA added to their boat insurance policies. Those of you who don’t have boats on the lake are likely unaware of this new rule. It is designed to protect your investment in the LPOA in the event of a boat-related injury leading to a lawsuit. This has been inconvenient for some of the boat owners, but in the Board’s view, that inconvenience was outweighed by the greater good for us all. The Board’s major focus will soon be turning to budgeting for next year. As always, your voice is welcome - whether it’s to raise an issue or voice appreciation for excellent job done by our staff.

T

he Argyle Gallery will feature another talented Lakewood Artist, Jennylynne Gragg, during the months of September and October.

I hope to help people connect with the intimacies around us, and focus on the portraits of what many people miss when they wander through our world. Jennylynne became a full-time artist in 2006. She took a hiatus from art to care for her mother in 2010, and in 2015 resumed her craft with workshops and classes with national artists and daily painting. She focuses her art in oils and pastels, using a process that starts with transparent paint and builds the color out from there, using brush and palette knife techniques. Jennylynne feels painting en plein air enhances her studio work. She paints alla prima in the studio to carry on the feeling she achieves when painting en plein air. Jennylynne believes art is communication and paintings a conversation.

In addition to her gallery venues, she takes commissions for pet portraits, gardens, flowers, and landscapes. She also creates from studies and photos of places she has traveled. Jennylynne has enhanced her skills with art education classes from the community college and with nationally known artists. Many wonderfully creative people have contributed to her passion for pastels and oils. Jennylynne and her husband, Michael, have lived in Lakewood with their pups since 2010. They enjoy all the amenities and love living on their cove with awesome lake views. She often paints throughout Lakewood, but her favorite spots are on her seawall and garden or gardens of friends. “To me, the intimate scenes of nature, the intricate beauty of flowers, the shimmer of water in its many forms, the patterns on trees, and the softness of an animal’s coat inspire me in my quest of art. I hope to help people connect with the intimacies around us, and focus on the portraits of what many people miss when they wander through our world. I paint what I love, what excites me, what soothes me, and hope that my viewers find a similar joy when they view my art.” Please be sure to come up to the clubhouse and see another talented Lakewood artist display her creations. Take time for a cocktail and/or dinner in the Argyle for a unique and enjoyable evening.

In fact, he is the presenter for LGC’s September program, “Orchids and More.” Since the fire in the caves where Birds’ Botanicals was located, he and his daughter and business partner, Vashti, have been keeping the KC area in orchids by selling at city markets and to wholesale florists in the area. David is an expert in propagating and raising orchids and will share his knowledge with the club. It’s amazing how far his plants have traveled before blooming in his greenhouses. He also raises succulents and carnivorous plants. We’re glad to have David back, and he has stories to tell! David will also have plant to sell. Guests are welcome. 9:00 – 9:30 Refreshments 9:30 – 12:00 Program and Business Meeting Lakewood Oaks Country Club David Bird is still around!
