Residents who irrigate from the lake should expect to receive their bill in October in the amount of $200. The fee is not for use of lake water, but rather for access to the lake water. Access means you have an irrigation pump and intake lines installed. If you have one or both of these items, you are required to pay the irrigation fee. If you choose to not pay for the fee, you will need to remove the pump and/or intake lines before December 31, 2022 and notify the LPOA office by calling 816.373.4326.
From the General Manager, Mark Reid
When we talk about what is important to the members of the Lakewood Community, lakes and trees generally top the list. As most of you know, we have had to evolve this year in our methods for controlling aquatic growth in the lakes. Warm water, lots of sunshine and lots of nutrients created perfect growing conditions for the aquatic plants. This was seen in many areas throughout the United States and some severe cases of algae growth and fish kill in California. We will continue our program into next year to assure that we are ahead of the problem.
Trees are not as fortunate. Currently, the stress of drought and disease is negatively affecting some of our mature trees. When I walk some of the common ground areas and see the number of trees that are being attacked by bores, carpenter ants and other insects, I find it concerning. For now, we are focused on the management of the diseased elm trees and the ash trees that are being killed by the ash borer. I want to be clear that I wish we never had to take down a single tree. But it is our duty to remove the diseased and dying trees and then replace them with native trees that will thrive in our regional climate.
The LPOA maintenance department has a schedule of trees that are to be removed. We have been working with arborist contractors to remove the tree on the schedule. If you see the contractors and have a question or concern about a tree, please contact me at the office 816-373-4327 or email me at mark@lpoa.com. It is very important that members do not go onto the common ground and try to direct the contractor or stop their work. Additionally, our maintenance personnel have their job to do and should not be chastised for performing that work.
I look forward to another wonderful fall season and our Lakewood trees are what provide the awesome colors that we enjoy so much, whether that be a mature tree or a newly planted tree that will provide for the next 50 years plus of enriching our environment.

From the Boardroom
Terry White, Board President
L.M. Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables, once wrote, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers!” After some of the oppressive heat of the summer I suspect many of us feel this same way.
Summer is “the season” for Lakewood, but in fall there is still much to appreciate. Yes, our pools are closed, but the lake is still there for all to enjoy the quiet from a paddleboard or kayak on a calm brisk morning, or from a boat, or relaxing on a pleasure dock. Pontoon boat rentals are available through October 16. This can be a great time to cruise the lake with less traffic and enjoy the changing colors of the trees. All three playgrounds are ready for your kids and grandkids. The sports fields are full of young teams practicing fall ball or soccer. No matter your stage in life, it is simply a great time to be outdoors.
We will end this special month with some people’s favorite holiday, Halloween. I remind you, and please talk to your driving teenagers and young adults, to drive carefully in Lakewood, all the time, but especially on Saturday, October 29, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. while our Lakewood Activities Committee hosts the Not So Scary Scavenger Hunt. Thank you to all of the volunteers who put this together for our community. I know you hear it often, but these events are all thanks to our neighbors who volunteer

to make Lakewood the best place to live. The same driving reminder goes out for Halloween, October 31, especially after dark. There are some areas of Lakewood that will see an abundance of kids that night and we want everyone to have a safe experience.
Enjoy the fall on the days we have sunny blue skies and lots of color in nature. Though summer is my favorite season, I agree with Montgomery, and am glad we live in a place where there is October.

FALL ART EXHIBIT
IN THE ARGYLE
Written by Patti BrowderA place to present artists of all kinds and mediums.
Judy Pizzurro
Lakewood resident, Judy Pizzurro, needed a new craft to keep her busy during the pandemic. After making copper jewelry in a studio for several years, she wanted to try something new that wouldn’t require the use of a blow-torch in the house. After she discovered the process of Alcohol Ink, it became her new creative passion.
Judy and her husband, Frank, have lived in Lakewood for 22 years. Judy majored in theater and taught theater in high school for 12 years and middle school for another 20 years. After retiring from teaching, a friend invited her to work with the local Spinning Tree Theater. Judy became a member of the Board, and began arranging fund-raisers and planning events. When COVID shutdowns ended, Spinning Tree reinvented their mission to work with disabled and non-disabled children producing theater where the children can interact with professionals. Judy continues to
assist with planning and promoting these children’s productions at Johnson County Heritage Center.
“I’m still trying new techniques. It’s messy, but it’s fun.”
Judy’s new creative activity for the past two years has been working with Alcohol Ink. The process
involves adding 90+% alcohol to the intense alcohol ink. After dropping the ink on a non-porous surface, she can add movement with an air compressor, hair dryer, or a straw for example. As the work dries, it reveals a pattern of colorful designs and unique textures. For Judy, learning this technique involved lots of experimenting on different surfaces, including special paper, glass and ceramic tile. She produces one-of-a-kind designs on Christmas Ornaments and greeting cards and participates in local shows and boutiques.
“I’m still trying new techniques. It’s messy, but it’s fun.”
Judy also has a love of gardening and reading and is a long-time member of the Lakewood Bookies Book Club. She and her family enjoy the lake from their boat every summer.
All artists featured in the gallery are Lakewood Residents. If you are an artist, or know someone in Lakewood who might be interested in showing their artistic talent to the community, get in touch with Carole Gray, cjegray@gmail.com; or Sharon Stackelhouse, s.stackelhouse@icloud.com. We are never surprised and always delighted to find new talent in Lakewood.
