We close the books on a wonderful 2019 and enter 2020 with a high degree of confidence that this will be another great year for the Lakewood Community. We live in interesting times. Election years can always be a wild card, but the U.S. economy is strong and we anticipate that momentum will carry through 2020. It is our fondest wish for this year that all members can truly enjoy what Lakewood has to offer and that we relish in our good fortune and, together, we continue to protect and enhance our beautiful community.

I was somewhat surprised to see that only about 10% of the surveys were returned. Next year we would love to hear from the rest of the 90%. It would help the Board greatly to move forward with better knowledge of what all of this community was thinking.

The biggest change you are going to see this year, based on our approved budget, will be with the marinas. Over the last few years LPOA has undergone a steady effort to install modern replacements to the original marina docks. This year we are upping that effort and replacing all of the remaining original docks.

Last month we approved our budgets for 2020. I encourage those that are interested in knowing how your dues are spent to take a look. The big picture is this - each year the majority of funds collected from your dues goes to yearly maintenance, repairs and administration. After those expenses are accounted for, approximately $1.3 million remains. It is with these remaining funds our Board has more discretion. A significant portion of this money is used to build reserves for future major projects. This foresight is designed to avoid the need for a dramatic dues increase like we experienced a few years ago. The LPOA Boards, in recent

I have discussed the concept and progress in prior publications. Now it is fully approved and fully funded. And I’m excited! I firmly believe that one way to significantly enhance our community and property values is to decrease the current 10 year wait list for boat slips. This will be a major step in that direction. Your Generosity is Appreciated! Your donation of warm socks for the homeless is much appreciated. Lakewood residents donated more than 300 pairs of socks that were delivered to Uplift Organization, Inc. Uplift volunteers, several who are Lakewood residents, go out into the streets of the Kansas City area providing these much needed items. Socks are the most requested, yet least donated item for the homeless. Uplift is located at 1516 Prospect Avenue in Kansas City. They dedicate their efforts toward the support of those who are homeless, providing basic human needs, care and compassion that are not usually received from other organizations. Their urgent needs are socks, hand warmers, coasts, sweatshirts and pants, scarves, stocking hats, boots, jeans 32-36, and thermal underwear for men and women. Thank you, Lakewood, for giving to those who need our help.

The Ripples // January 2020

2020 Boat Registration Stickers

Stickers are now available at the LPOA office. The stickers are $34.50 for non-motorized and $88 for motorized boats. There is an additional $8 charge if you do not purchase your stickers for your previously-registered watercraft before May 1, 2020. There is a $21 charge if you would like for staff to attach your stickers for you.

February 19 is Boat Slip Moving Day Per LPOA Policy 5 (Boat Slips), LPOA has set aside an evening to allow current Primary Lessees to change their Boat Slip assignment to another open slip. If you are a current Primary Lessee and wish to move to a different boat slip, plan on attending this meeting: Wednesday, February 19, 2020 6:00 p.m. Lakewood Oaks Clubhouse 651 NE St. Andrews Circle, Lee’s Summit, MO 64064

Here’s how it works.

When you sign in at the meeting, you will draw a random number. Numbers will be called in numerical order. When your number is called, staff will show you the available slips, and you’ll have the chance to move to any available slip. Once you’ve chosen your new slip assignment, that’s all you need to do. LPOA staff will send you the new contract to have executed and returned to the Administrative Office. Once everyone in attendance has had the opportunity to change assignments, staff will fill the empty slips with the waiting list, and there will be no further chances to make any changes. If you are not available to attend in person, feel free to send a representative in your place. Make sure this person has your name, account number, and slip number. If you are happy with your current slip, there is no need to attend. Just start counting the days until you’re on the lake! If you have any questions, please direct them to Nancy Sykes or Sean Bachtel at 816.373.4326.

Many of our Lakewood neighbors fly to warmer climates for the winter. It is important to let the LPOA office staff know if you are one of our “birds”. This helps us reach you if questions come up regarding billing, boat slip leases or other issues. Additionally, we are the first contact of the Police and Fire Departments in the event there is a problem with your home. Please take the time to call the office at 816.373.4326 and let us know when you’ll be gone and when you are returning. We can add an alternate address on your account once your leave, so you will receive your LPOA mail. Once you return, it will revert back to your Lakewood address. You can email Cari Brown at cari@lpoa. com or call the office. Lakewood’s monthly dues statements are sent out “Return Service Requested”, therefore, the Post Office WILL NOT forward them even though you have a forwarding order in place at the post office for your mail.

nother talented Lakewood artist will be exhibiting his underwater photography in the Argyle Gallery during the months of January and February. Rick Scaletty started scuba diving as a hobby in 1986. He was fortunate enough to be able to dive in some of the most beautiful places in the world since then. Amazed not only with the beauty of sea life, but also how the survival of so many sea creatures depend on their symbiotic relationships, it became his passion to capture these special moments in the water with a camera. As the years of scuba diving passed, Rick became more and more aware of the changes in the reefs and the marine life. In many places he has observed first-hand how fish and sea life populations have been drastically reduced or become nonexistent. Coral reefs have become bleached out graveyards or are choked out with the prolific growth of algae.

“According to marine biologists, about ninety percent (90%) of the Great Barrier Reef is dead or dying, as global warming causes sea temperatures to rise faster than corals can adapt to the changing environment. Pollution by plastic waste and destructive commercial fishing practices are devastating to sea life."

who see his art learn to appreciate the significance of our natural world and become better stewards of our planet. “Through education, knowledge and awareness, humans can learn to live in harmony with all life forms in the sea or on the land. But this begins with awareness at the individual level.” Rick contributes to increasing that awareness by donating 25% of proceeds from the sale of his art to ocean conservation. Rick and his wife, Kathy, have been enjoying life in Lakewood since 1985. DID YOU KNOW? The LSUR is 100% funded and supported by community donations. The funds go directly to operations, with no one receiving a salary. The need for equipment, vehicle, insurance, training, travel expenses, and much more depend on people like you to keep these services going.

I

n November, the Lee’s Summit Underwater Rescue & Recovery Team (LSUR) pulled a car from Lakewood’s East Lake that had been driven in the lake by a 14-year old during the middle of the night. Luckily, he escaped unhurt. This is a prime example of one of the many services provided by the LSUR. Lee’s Summit Underwater Rescue & Recovery Team began its cooperation with the Jackson County Sheriff ’s Department in 1966 after a tragic drowning in a local area lake. Several divers saw the need and recovered the body. To meet the demand of requests such as weapons/ evidence recovery, small aircraft recovery, human and animal rescue/recovery, swift water/river rescue, ice rescue/ice diving recovery, land/water based missing person searches and sonar searches, they later formed their own 501 (c)(3) totally staffed by volunteers. These specialty-trained men and women operate 24/7 to assist the Kansas City Metro area in rescue and recovery. The Team does not charge law and fire agencies for their specialized work. However, the general public is charged for personal property recovery to offset the cost of the search operation. No charge is ever requested for giving water safety presentations, which they provide to area schools and the general public.
