Lakewood Artist Exhibits

Two artists will display their art in the Argyle Gallery during the months of January and February.

It’s always a pleasant surprise to see the early morning views of Lakewood from our “sunrise” photographer, Janet Beebe. Janet will once more be exhibiting her “Around the Lake” photos in the gallery and wants to wish everyone in Lakewood a very Happy New Year.

We also welcome a new artist to the gallery. Julie Phillips has lived in Lakewood since 2000 and is founder of Phillips Insurance Agency. With a passion for art and learning, Julie studied speech pathology at CMSU, then obtained a BSE in theater, attended the Kansas City Art Institute, and achieved a Master’s Degree in Marketing from Rockhurst. Along her educational journey, Julie fell in love with the Impressionist Art Movement. She has studied and is strongly influenced by every impressionist artist between 1860-1864. Her mediums are oil, chalk and pencil. Julie loves to golf in Lakewood and play pool, when she’s not creating her next piece of art.

Be sure to drop in to the Argyle for a hot toddy and an excellent dinner on a cold winter night, while enjoying the talents of two more Lakewood artists

David True

Crime Fighter Turns Crime Writer

Lakewood Artist Series

A place to present artists of all kinds and mediums.

Did you know we have a real crime fighter right here in Lakewood?

Lakewood resident David True retired in 2013 from an exciting (dangerous at times) career in investigation and law enforcement. David (Dave to his friends) started out as an Army Explosives Ordnance Disposal Specialist; spent several years in St. Louis law enforcement; 26 years with the ATFT; and another 13 years with Yellow/Roadway Corporation as a corporate security manager. He has pursued and investigated criminals throughout Missouri, with the purpose of being certain the “bad guys” were eventually locked away. Dave and his wife Kathy raised their family (Justin and Lauren) in Lakewood, moving here in 1976 and building a second home in 1988. They love the community for all the amenities, location, and the best neighbors.

Dave is still teaching and holding training workshops on security issues, but now devotes much of his time to research and writing. His recent book Gangsters, Outlaws and Mobsters – A Missouri History of Twentieth Century Crimes and Criminals is an extraordinary compilation of high-profile criminal cases with ties to Missouri--Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde, Machine Gun Kelly, and many more. His recount of local Kansas City crimes, such as “Union Station Massacre,” reveals details you may not have heard. His advice for anyone who wants to write a book is to “do their research, corroborate with experts, be persistent, and not waiver from their goal.” Dave admits there are other books in his future and intends to keep writing as long as he has stories to tell.

You are invited to St. Andrews Pub on Saturday, January 22, 1:00-4:00 p.m. for a book signing event. Chat with David True about writing and Missouri criminal history, while he signs your copy of Gangsters, Outlaws and Mobsters.
