4 The Ripples // January 2022

January

From the General Manager, Mark Reid

Beginning a new year is always exciting. I always start the year hopeful. Just like Missouri weather we are always navigating frequent changes and making the best of it. This year, one of my fondest hopes is that America can get inflation under control. Last year’s inflation rate has caused a significant dues increase that is now showing up on your billing statement for the first time this month. If you are an avid reader of the Ripples magazine, you would have known it was coming because we started discussing it in April of 2022. What I dislike so much about inflation is that a significant dues increase gains nothing. It just keeps the Association at the same financial status in terms of purchasing power and reserve level. It is fortunate for members who are receiving social security that the SSA raised Social Security COLA by 8.7%. It gains the recipients nothing, but they are not falling behind either, just like the Association.

As of November 2022, the US City Average Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell to 7.1%. This is encouraging and allows for a little bit of New Year hope that it will continue to decline through the year. We have a modest amount of work to do in 2023 in terms of improving the Lakewood Community. There will be no big projects this year as our focus is on debt reduction as the Federal Reserve Board trend has been to rapidly increase interest rates to tame inflation at the risk of sending the country’s economy into recession. Obviously, in any community, a recession can bring a whole different subset of problems to navigate.

So once again, we begin the year with hopes for the best and plans in place should things not go the way we had wished. We will continue to share our thoughts along the way.

Lakewood Property Owners Association // Serving Our Members Since 1973 5

From the Boardroom Terry White, Board President

2023 will be a special year for Lakewood. Lakewood Property Owners Association was incorporated in 1973. Our neighborhood and HOA will celebrate its 50th anniversary! It is our golden jubilee. We will celebrate being “home” to thousands of residents over the years. With all the improvements made to amenities the past ten years, we are looking our best at the age of 50.

Though the first lots were recorded in 1971, and the first homes were constructed in 1974, 1973 is the year of incorporation, thus an anniversary. I am looking for a resident who has lived here for much of those 50 years. Maybe there is more than one. If you moved into your home here in the mid to late 1970’s or very early 1980’s please reach out to me at terry.white@lpoa. com. I would love to hear from you. Additionally, if you have photos or other media you would like to share and potentially get featured in the Ripples, please reach out to Cariann@lpoa.com.

I have heard from a few of you with multiple generations in the same family who have purchased homes in Lakewood. One of these families is the Bertkens. Steve met his wife, Barb, 38 years ago, just half a mile from where their home is now. Steve’s Mom, Beverly Bertken, Steve’s nephew and his wife, Michael and Alli Berkten, along with their son Miles, all call Lakewood home. It would be fun to spotlight others if you are among this group with multiple generation homeowners and have not yet reached out. Tell me your story if you do not mind.

LAKEWOOD ARTISTS SERIES

JANUARY ARTISTS EXHIBIT IN THE ARGYLE

A New Year brings a new exhibit to the Argyle Art Gallery from two Lakewood artists we have enjoyed before, and another recently discovered talent.

NICK ERKER

Nick Erker was influenced by American realist artists and inspired by their ability to compose works that transpose the viewer into the story. Primarily working in watercolor on wood panels, he is able to capture the people and stories from his childhood with vivid emotional expressions and larger-than-life personalities. Nick has devoted his career to educating others in art and design and currently teaches art at Fort Osage High School. Last summer Nick held a two-month solo exhibition at the Art School KC in Lee’s Summit titled “Heartland.” He also completed some major commissioned paintings this past year, including two very large 8.5x10 ft. altar paintings for a church in Colorado. Nick and his wife J’Nan have lived in Lakewood for over ten years.

14 The Ripples // January 2022
Returning Artists Nick Erker and Jennylynne Gragg | Introducing Tanya Jana-Ford
emotional expressions and larger-than-life personalities.

JENNYLYNNE GRAGG

Also returning to exhibit in the Argyle is Jennylynne Gragg. This year she will begin her nineteenth plein air painting season starting with an event in Augusta, MO, and participating in four other plein air events this coming summer. Jennylynne and her husband Michael, use their travel trailer to attend the different events, bringing with them a cozy home environment, and any art supplies needed, During the months of December and January, Jennylynne takes a break to do commissioned portrait works of animals and people, including an impressive longhorn cow. You might also see Jennylynne driving around Lakewood in her Ford Transit Van, sketching local scenes for an upcoming series.

TANYA JANA-FORD

Our third artist in the New Year exhibit is Tanya Jana-Ford. Tanya has lived in Lakewood with her husband, Tracy, for nearly four years and they welcomed their first baby daughter, Divya, in September. Tanya earned a Masters in Architecture in 2013 and continues to practice.

Tanya also teaches piano and has always been familiar with abstract art in the form of music. Her passion for art (abstract and tangible) transformed during the challenges of COVID. She began experimenting with more abstract painting and was excited about the results that came from more fluid work with the colors she couldn’t control. The Fluid Pour Art process is driven by the colors selected, amount of silicone within each color, and how it is poured on the canvas. Once the paint is poured, amounts of silicone start to show itself within the poured paint. Tanya then moves the layers of poured wet paint with a blow dryer or straw. Each result is different and creates a unique piece of art every time.

In addition to art and architecture, Tanya loves gardening, teaching/playing the piano and being around the lake or one of the pools.

All artists featured in the gallery are Lakewood Residents. If you are an artist, or know someone in Lakewood who might be interested in showing their artistic talent to the community, get in touch with Carole Gray, cjegray@gmail.com; or Sharon Stackelhouse, s.stackelhouse@icloud.com. We are never surprised and always delighted to find new talent in Lakewood.
