The Ripples // March 2021
March From the General Manager, Mark Reid
Pandemic, Rolling Blackouts, Polar Vortex. Bad. Moderna, Pfizer, J&J, Perseverance Rover Landing on Mars. Good. Whenever there is something that makes our lives difficult, there is always something very positive happening that enhances and enriches our lives. So we keep moving forward, working together to make things better, and relish in the fact that spring is almost here and we can get back to being in the great outdoors. Everything is in place for another wonderful spring and summer in Lakewood. We can’t wait to see everyone out and about again, in the parks, at the clubhouse and on the Lake. I’m sure our four-legged best friends are planning to walk their humans extensively after a long bitter February. We try to protect the Association from damage in many ways every day. Our Zebra Mussel prevention program is one of those ways. It is not top of the news by any means, but it is an annual, methodical program that if enforced every year, we retain the hope that we will be spared from the invasive species in our lakes and the resulting serious damage it will cause. For this very reason, we needed to make sure that all floatable water craft are registered with the Association. When you register your watercraft, you agree that you will be vigilant in assuring that the watercraft you have registered and placed in our bodies of water will be free of zebra mussels. This means also that a friend or relative cannot bring their unregistered watercraft, that may have been used in a local lake that contains zebra mussels, and place it on our lakes. The Board of Directors amended the Rules and Regulations in February in order to create a new class called “Light Watercraft”. This class covers watercraft that can be physically lifted and portaged by one person and is propelled solely by the use of a handheld paddle. Therefore, under this class, paddleboards (rigid or inflatable) and kayaks will be required to be registered and bear a LPOA issued sticker. The cost of registration and the sticker is $5 annually. If you have not done so already, please familiarize yourself with the LPOA Rules and Regulations regarding zebra mussels and watercraft. Rules and Regulations can be found on the lpoa.com website under Members Area, Governing Documents, Rules & Regulations. If you haven’t registered on the website yet, you will need to do so to see the Members Area. Go to the home page and click on Register (on the black line) near the top right-hand side of the page. We all realize how popular and enjoyable the use of light watercraft is in Lakewood. This is in addition to our other motorized and non-motorized watercraft. It is one of the huge benefits of Lake life. We understand that in peoples’ busy lives it can seem like a hassle to have to come to the office to register your watercraft. Please never forget that the real hassle is the catastrophic damage that will occur if our lakes become infested with zebra mussels, as there is no current remedy to eliminate them.

Board of Directors’ Meeting Actions taken February 11, 2021
While reading the February Ripples, which by the way is the official publication for Lakewood, I was delighted to see that the Activities Committee had already planned their schedule for 2021. The Lakewood swim teams have requested dates for practices, and the Board has approved. The Board has approved the pool contract for 2021. As with any planned activity in Lakewood, it is all subject to change due to Jackson County Health Regulations. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for more traditional summer activities. I’m writing this article on February 15, and the REAL FEEL temperature is -33 degrees. I know we are all looking forward to warmer temperatures...burrrrrrrr. May the LUCK of the IRISH be with you! Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Zebra Mussels Awareness
In order to prevent the spread of Zebra Mussels, Lakewood has been very proactive in its efforts. This includes gates at both of our boat ramps and the adoption of procedures for inspecting watercrafts entering the lakes. To keep this process as efficient as possible, we ask membership to “Clean, Drain and Dry” their boats and trailers between bodies of water. The following tips will help ensure our lake remains free of this invasive species, and to quickly serve our members when entering the exiting the lake. When requesting access to the ramps, please call Community Services as 816.373.1500. Please call at least 20 minutes in advance to launch or remove a boat from the water. If the boat has been in foreign waters: • Power wash the craft and trailer at 140 degrees temperatures, flushing the motor and live wells. • Allow time to dry prior to launching at Lakewood. Prior to staff inspection at time of launching, ensure: • The boat, trailer and any other equipment are clean and can likely pass the inspection. • There is no standing water, weeds or plants attached to either the trailer or boat. • That the trailer and boat are properly licensed. • That a currently Lakewood sticker is attached • That you carry your valid Lakewood I.D. when approaching the gate. No one without a valid I.D. will be allowed to launch, regardless of the condition of the craft and trailer. • If Zebra Mussels are found during inspection, the craft will need to be washed and quarantined, as defined by LPOA rules and regulations. The incident will be reported to MDC, as well. Coordinate any work done by contractors with LPOA staff. Contractors will not be allowed access to the lake without inspection and the member’s permission. 12

May 13 (Thurs.) New Board members seated during New Business at May Board of Directors meeting
Three Seats Open for Election in 2021 Board of Directors Election There are three (3) Board of Directors seats up for election in 2021 ---At Large Representatives. All three seats are for three-year terms. If you are interested in committing yourself to a rewarding experience in service to your community and would like to play a role in the future of Lakewood, then you might want to consider declaring your candidacy for one of the open Board of Directors seats. However, the decision to serve on the LPOA Board of Directors is not yours alone. Those who will benefit from your leadership ---- your Lakewood friends and neighbors ---- will determine who represents them. Each year, during the annual election, LPOA members cast their ballots for the candidates they feel can best serve the community. Those members who take the time to vote deserve an excellent slate of candidates to choose from. That means qualified candidates --- LIKE YOU --- need to declare their candidacy for the 2021 election. Election to the LPOA Board of Directors is also election to the Lakewood Holding Company (d/b/a Lakewood Oaks Country Club) Board of Directors. LHC is a wholly owned subsidiary of LPOA and therefore
governed by the LPOA Board of Directors. Any LPOA member, in good standing, who is interested in running for one of the three open Board of Directors seats may pick up a “Petition for Candidacy” at the LPOA offices (651 NE St. Andrews Circle) beginning February 11, 2021. Completed petitions (with at least 20 signatures of LPOA members in good standing), candidate questionnaires and pictures must be filed in LPOA offices by 5:00 p.m. on March 10, 2021. Please note the Election Timetable preceding this article. In order for the Election Committee to certify an interested LPOA member as a candidate on the 2021 ballot, the candidate’s petition, questionnaire and picture must be returned to LPOA offices not later than 5:00 p.m. on March 10th. All items on the “Candidate Questionnaire” should be answered. This information will be printed in April Ripples. If you are interested in declaring your candidacy and/or have any questions, please call LPOA Staff at 816.373.4326.
