Design is man’s quest to balance form and function – to the extreme at times. Some argue that man’s first action of design was finding a smoother rock to sit on. We’ve come a long way since then and our local designers have been hard at work improving on the rock’s amenities - now called a chair – either improving tested equations, others going at it in an entirely different way. On the decor we’ve got a hold of none other than Dale Chihuly, whom MGM commissioned to work his magic on their lobby and lounge. Nights are getting hotter in Macau, and the venues are doing their best to keep you dazzled – lights and ambiences. Been having that feeling that it’s time to renovate your inner-spaces? Well, we’ve put together quite the exclusive list of goodies with just the right assets to tempt you. Speaking of which, we’ll let you in on a gadget worth your craving: European masters Phillips’ were definitely aiming high on form and function when they designed their Relationship Care product line. Next month we’ll talk about Beauty and Grooming. She’ll have centre stage (surely deserved) but we’ll be sure not to forget the demands behind the metro man. We’ll seek out the most exclusive spa experiences in town and tell you what beauty salons will do the trick for you. Looking for the perfect manicure? We’ll let you know the closest thing we’ve found. We always crave your feedback. The first issues of ESSENTIAL were met with enthusiasm from many a reader and we thank you for your encouragement and suggestions. If you have something to share please keep it clean and write to us at ESSENTIAL@macaubusiness.com. Go ahead, indulge yourself in the best the city has to offer and enjoy, but remember, design is a way of life!

“Mirror, Mirror, on the wall,

who is the fairest of them all?” Mirror 1 (Good Taste) Plain lines are a sure bet. Simplicity keeps you safe. Your taste is your statement to society, it better be good! Can’t afford the real stuff? Mix it with fakes.

If well done it is hard to spot

Well placed mirrors can make a small room look bigger Go for those that extend your image. Youíll look better - and taller.

Big frames are great ways to highlight mirrors

Mirror 2 (Bad Taste) Never over accessorise.

Don’t you know what it says about you? Functionality is a must in good design. Your house is your mirror - never forget that! Try to avoid fake ëtimedí pieces. A truly bad look. Avoid replacing a wall in the house with a mirror. You donít live in a hotel.

Fat and unhappy about your looks?

Make them smaller around the house Big frames also look better on bigger mirrors unless you are making a statement.

01 Thou shall chose a style you can afford and follow your instincts. 02 Thou shall not make for yourself any carved image of your neighbour’s house or of your favorite movie star. 03 Thou shall not take the name of a designer and simply hire him or her to make changes in your house just because of his or her name. 04 Thou shall not turn thy home into an impersonal and non-functional space stuffed with brand names. 05 Honour your needs and not the brand. 06 Thou shall not murder good design by hiring a company to copy and adapt it to your personal taste. 07 Thou shall not commit adultery. Well…depending on how fit your co-conspirator is 08 Thou shall not steal (designs)... unless they are really good! 09 Thou shall not bear false witness when you are using fakes…acknowledge them! 10 Thou shall not covet thy neighbour’s house (when building yours…). the theft of some ‘little’ ideas is forgiveable.

rchitect Rui Leão is Vice-President of the Architects’ Association of Macau (AAM). He grew up in Azores, Lisbon, Sao Tome e Principe and Macau and received his Architecture degree from FAUP / Porto. Together with his partners, Manuel Vicente and Carlotta Bruni, their firm VLB Arquitectura e Planeamento, has developed extensive planning design work in Macau. In parallel, he has recently concluded the renovation work on the Quartel dos Mouros / Macau Port Authority building, which is part of the ensemble of buildings in Macau, recently awarded UNESCO world heritage status.

Has also exhibited in the 2004 and 2005 editions of the Salone Satellite of Milan’s Salone del Mobile, and in the 2005 edition of Experimenta Design / Lisbon Biennale. Their design for the Nam Van Square in the centre of the Nam Van reclamation scheme, which deals both with the proximity to the water, and a complex road infrastructure situation, integrating all components into the design, was awarded an Arcasia Gold Medal in 2006, and has been exhibited at the 10th Mostra Internazionale di Architectura of the Biennale di Venezia and at the 7th Bienal Internacional de Arquitectura de São Paulo.

Loop

Loop is a seat that permits a variety of seating positions, from the very formal to the very informal. It is a molded strip in fiberglass, that from its base to its arm evolves in a fluid continuous and bending curve, creating complexity for the eye and comfort for the body. It is designed to be a pedestal for the body that rests on it.

Babel Babel bookshelf was created having in mind a perfect balance, geometry and clean lines. The prototype was among twenty-two entries selected from a field of over 300 and was shown in The Furniture Society booth at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City in May, 2008.

Sigillum Sigillum is a vertical exhibitor for displaying a variety of objects and products. It is a free standing structure that will enrich your space, whether it be a shop, an office or home. It occupies space like a sculpture, absorbing its environment. Rather than just displaying an object, Sigillum enhances the object on display, by making it float on its spiral. It can be easily assembled-disassembled and stored in a little space, and can be added to as required.

iv

E-scher E-scher is a chair that represents the search for the ‘line’ between sculpture and design. This is a work in progress, its objective is to optimize opposing functions in one same piece. Rui Leão’s creation is, at the same time, three chairs in one. It is a statement that goes beyond meaning and functionality in one piece.

Interview “This month we unveil something that will make you dream…”

Dream a little dream of glass When you walk into MGM Grand Macau don’t be afraid to look at the ceiling or the front desk or perhaps wander through the long corridor leading to the jazz bar. Displayed throughout are American artist Dale Chihuly’s pieces – the timeless, poetic teller of fairy tales in a world where everything is fragile and light. A first glance at the ceiling gives you a taste of paradise as you bask in the glow of a warm reddish colour, more than a dozen little chandeliers forming blooming flowers. “Fiori Di Paradiso” – “Flowers of Paradise” – is a glass installation measuring 55 feet long and 30 feet wide, and next to it, behind the front desk, you’ll find “Fiori di Paradiso Drawing Wall”, depicting explosions in the form of flowers, colours and little whispers.

The wall consists of 45 different glass panels. Along the corridor leading to the jazz bar take in several unique pieces alluding to the world of the sea and to a colourful universe so intense it makes the trip worthwhile. Spend time just to appreciate these delicate hand blown pieces of art designed with nothing else but a breath of life. Dale Chihuly lives in Seattle and his works are displayed in over 50 museums worldwide. Among them the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institute in New York city; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Muse des Arts Decoratifs, Palais du Louvre, in Paris; the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in Japan.

A class act US artist Dale Chihuly loves glass, so much so that he has had a 40 year love affair with the stuff. Now his work is on display at the MGM Grand. From his studio in Seattle he tells Essential to handle with care Some pieces look so fragile that we fear touching them. Are there special care instructions owners should follow? Glass is much stronger than it looks. Don’t worry about it breaking. Just handle it with care. Mind you, if you’re in an earthquake zone, glue them down. What’s your relationship with your art? Once a piece is sold or on display, do you go to see it? Because I’m a prolific artist I work with the glass all the time. When I’m traveling, I often have the opportunity to see or re-visit my work. This is a gratifying experience. We compose many of the installations we do for shows, exhibitions and commissioned projects here in my studio in Seattle, so it’s nice to be able to see the artwork completely installed on-site.

vi

Big Spender The art work of Konstantin Bessmertny It is often said that artwork is the best investment of them all – because seldom does the value of a good piece depreciate. If you have an eye for pin-pointing potential investments you will agree with us that Konstantin Bessmertny’s paintings fall into the category of “If I only knew!” If you did, you would have become a little wealthier today. The Russian born artist lives in Macau and spends his time in Hong Kong where galleries show him, sell him and promote him. Infact, they do anything for him, for his name represents a certain excellence seldom seen in Macau. For the last decade, while developing his satirical style by exploring the deepest dark and funny side of this SAR, the price of each one of his paintings has skyrocketed. Remember his old time exhibitions? A few thousand would have been enough for a great painting of his Long gone, dear friends. We all have regrets…

How do you perceive Macau’s art market? The opportunity to sell artwork at the MGM in Macau is very good, and especially good for glass.Universally, glass is something that people can relate to and understand – the color, the form and the way light passes through it. Do you like the installation at MGM Grand Macau? Do you like seeing it ‘side by side’ with a Degas sculpture? I love that my work is located near a Degas sculpture - Degas is one of the greatest artists of all time. I’m very proud of the installations that I’ve done in Macau, and I hope that I have the opportunity to do more work there in the future.

Some of Konstantin Bessmertny’s works are worth hundreds of thousands of patacas now. Frankly, we don’t want to guess how much you’d need to splash out to hang one of these beautiful representations of Macau’s sins on your wall. Well, this Essential issue is all about décor and design and nothing looks better than a great painting hanging in the living room to greet guests and make you feel special. Bessmertny is currently working on some major commissions, but we guess if you are willing to spend big you might get a rendezvous. But be aware! The artist is not on the money trail, his art is primarily for arts sake, warts and all. It will say a lot about your attitude if you can get him to paint for you…. Good luck and spend wisely!

Details Made in Macau Prototypes

What makes these pieces interesting as design works is what lies beneath them as a common denominator: Think locally, go globally

Belonging Keith Pang Born in Macau, Keith Pang is an industrial designer with a taste for all things design: product, exhibition and graphic design. Besides being selected for the “40 under 40” award by Perspective Magazine, in Hong Kong, he also won the excellence award from Perspective Magazine for Best Product: “Belonging” www.akindesign.com

Deviantscape Chair Joao Bruno Soares Macau born architect and artist Joao Bruno Soares is said to have an interest in “unorthodox perception and cognitive experiments within the scope of private and public realms”. He has been selected for the Architecture and Design “40 under 40” award by Perspective Magazine in Hong Kong.

DNA Outdoor Benches Together Keith Pang You always need extra seats prepared for your guests. A table can store up all of that without any extra space.“Together” is a little table with four chairs combined in a simple shape. You can easily find your seat when you are gathering with your friends. Sizes: L 780mm x W 450mm x H 420mm Materials: plywood, stainless steel

viii

Manuel CS Equipment designer Manuel CS lives between Portugal and Macau. “DNA” is a collection of benches created using a modular logic. According to the authors definition, they are like “chromosomes” - the modules can be combined in different ways to allow for new ambiances: “The system can design a unique identity for each urban site, in keeping with change as an index of quality of life in the city.” DNA Outdoor Benches, wood and stainless steel

Dora Tam The local designer was educated in Canada, received a major in jewelry and metallurgy and was one of the 29 winning designers in De Beer’s Diamonds - International Awards 2000. Tam designed for major jewelry houses in Hong Kong from 1992 to 2000 and launched Dora Tam Design in 2001.

Revolve ConstrAction Nuno Soares Portuguese architect and urban planner Nuno Soares took this concept to the extreme when he created his “ConstrAction” line in 2005. With tables that turn into beds, sofas and shelves, this hardworking little piece of design ingenuity is also eco-friendly, employing second-hand materials such as scaffolding and plywood. He was also selected for the “40 under 40” award by Perspective Magazine, in Hong Kong last year.

Fashion

SOMBRA

Lines Lab Not satisfied with a Graduate Degree in Equipment Design, Clara Brito furthered her studies of fashion at the Milan Polytechnic Institute. Together with Manuel CS she established the brand Lines Lab in 2006 in Macau and ever since has been presenting affordable and interesting alternatives to urban wear. In this issue we show the brand’s accessories CUT SAR (shoulder bags) and SOMBRA (umbrellas)

SOMBRA (shadow) its a collection of umbrellas that are being developed by Lines Lab to be launched in the market for the next 09-10 Fall/ Winter Collection. The brainstorming discussion around this product reached the conclusion that what was important in this object was not the material part of it, but the light/shadow effects that it would produce. There is a special collection of SOMBRA dedicated to Berardo Collection Museum (Lisbon) and it will be distributed exclusively by the Berardo Foundation.

StarWorld

Best casino interior design To gamble within the halls of an award winning casino is a bit like breathing: easy, because they’re everywhere. However, some are a bit more special than others. The International Gaming Awards (IGA) distinguished StarWorld Hotel and Casino with its “Best Casino Interior Design 2009” Award. StarWorld’s facade, interior and decor beat Monte Carlo’s Casino, Shangri-La Storm in Russia, The Palazzo in Las Vegas and the Isle Capri and Opera House in Britain. The hotel-casino opened in 2006 and among other awards received the “5 Star Diamond Award” from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences in 2008, and Higher Flyer Award by the Hong Kong Business Magazine in 2007. In 2008 the IGA’s award went to Crown Macau, in Taipa.

Rossio Rossio offers an array of classic and fusion dishes including Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Mediterranean and Southeast Asian favorites. Specially designed by internationally renowned, avant-garde interior design firm, Super Potato Group, earthy elements and an open kitchen design enhance the experience, while savoring every bite of their gastronomic creations.

Roka The Roka Restaurant main dining area can seat up to 100 patrons. It has a large Robata Grill with over 30 seats offset by clean and minimal stone, wood, glass and earth designed by Japanese interior designer Noriyoshi Muramatsu of Studio Glitt in collaboration with Tokyo design firm Super Potato.

Blue Bar Bar Azul, akin to Blue Bar in The Four Seasons Hotel Macau is a jewel box-sized space with lacquered blue wall coverings, blue velvet drapes and one striking wall done in iridescent abalone seashells. The Portuguese word “Azul” means blue, and the colour makes the concept of the interior design. There is also a wall embedded with small LCDs and the idea behind this is to create a place where major sporting events can be viewed without the venue being close to being viewed as anything like a sports-bar. The LCDs revert to creating ambience and visual imagery as a digital art installation when there is no sport on view.

Veuve Clicquot Lounge La Grande Dame, as Veuve Clicquot is known, is developing an exclusive network of lounges worldwide and in Asia its very first has opened in Macau. Patrons can enjoy flutes and bottles of La Grande Dame as well as a full selection of current and past La Grande Dame Vintages and Vintage Rose. With two distinct indoor and outdoor areas, the atmosphere changes but the class remains the same. Outside along the Grande Praia, the Veuve Clicquot Lounge has a cozy terrace featuring two limited edition “love seats” designed by famous New York City celebrity interior designer Karim Rashid. Here, guests can gaze into the European-inspired piazza, with its Portuguese facades and take in the hum of activity as guests walk through the heart of the property. For a completely different feel, simply walk inside.

Book worm

Coffee table design No, we’re not talking about coffee, or tables. Sure, they’re important and must fit their purpose, but what makes the difference is what you put on top of it. We found the perfect thing, no matter the decor you’ve chosen because, after all, knowledge don’t take up (much) space. Phaidon, one of the leading publishers of books on the visual arts has re-edited their “Design Classics”. Now you can buy either the three volumes separately or just get the whole thing (you know you’ll want it anyway). The first volume, “Pioneers”, depicts the ESSENTIAL design products, that were made possible thanks to startling new inventions, discoveries and cost effective techniques that revolutionised our everyday lives and established a benchmark for great and enduring design. Next in line is “Mass Production”, which demonstrates how by the middle of the 20th century, production had increased worldwide and manufacturers had become conscious of the concept of good design (the day had to come, right?). To end it all “New Technologies” shows how commercial air travel, the colour television and the computer, global access and communication play an increasingly important role in design. And, did we mention that each volume depicts a whopping 333 design items with a fact sheet and complete description? You wont feel short for inspiration in the next... season?

Veneer

Imagine your girlfriend pops out to the shops for some groceries and comes home with a vibrator? Panic? Turn up the football on the telly? Maybe grab that extra strong beer from the fridge? None of the above. Don’t be scared, she’s probably just unhappy with her sex life as you might be. Also, don’t take it personally. You can always claim vibrators are a growing global phenomenon. After the launching of Durex and Trojans’ little pleasure machines, Phillips - yes, the venerable razor brand and x-ray readers manufacturer - has decided to bring some ideas into your bedroom. Apparently a clean shaven face is no longer good enough, so the Dutch brand have launched the Warm Intimate Massager. The add is classy and very tasteful. You have to think carefully to connect the dots… The new line is called “Relationship Care” and, it seems, it promises to add some spice to your life. What makes it better than all the others? We don’t know, but for sure the little device looks good and smooth – made to measure with its round and ergonomic shape, and what’s more you can grab it with one hand. Still feel you’re not the type for saucy games? Forget the vibrator. Think about great lingerie and soft silk linen under your skin and of your beloved partner. Why not get food into your bed or even a heart shaped mattress? Whatever might be said, sex is all about design. Starting with your partner, right? An appealing object makes you want to touch it, feel it and even smell it. What is the point of a good design if it doesn’t induce a certain sense of possession? Isn’t that what it is all about? Human beings trying to wear whatever pleases them to attract others. This is the, er, bottom line. We please ourselves by pleasing others. If you’re senses are still not stirred about how design can be sensual, we guess you’ve got a real problem...

A thin layer of wood, usually of fine quality, that is bonded to a heavier surface of lesser quality wood. Most new furniture is made of veneer construction. Macau is no different…

Samsung’s first solar-powered full touch phone ‘Blue Earth’ Samsung Electronics has unveiled ‘Blue Earth’, the first fulltouch screen cell phone to run on solar power. With a ‘flat and well rounded shiny pebble’ design, the Blue Earth adopts a solar panel on the rear of the device that allows the user to make a call anytime, from anywhere. So far Samsung has not released any pricing or market availability information for the Blue Earth, but it is expected to give the phone the full hands-on treatment at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona.

Hopeful The ‘Immaculate’ arm concept

Master student Hans Alexander Huseklepp at AHO, come up with the idea of turning a handicap into an object of fashion and identity. “Immaculate is a neurological prosthetic, connected to the users central nervous system. The exterior of the prosthetic is textile clad in Corian plates. The Corian allows embedded technology to be seamlessly integrated, and in union with the textile gives the prosthetic a clear graphical identity. Each joint is a globe joint, allowing a larger freedom of movement than a normal human arm.”

Innocents The objective was to draw attention to people who are innocently imprisoned and show at the same time that even a small donation can have a big impact. A simple trick (whereby you pull out the card) demonstrates that everybody can rescue the imprisoned with just a small action.

Protection Hanyoung Lee invented this Virtual Wall to be placed in front of pedestrian crossings. The “wall” allows drivers to feel like there is a wall in front of the crossing to protect pedestrians.
