his edition of ES brings you a dubious pleasure: the 2010 spring/summer collections are finally out, for all to delight and covet. The down side is: you’ll have go through the whole winter before you can don any of these new glorious creations. But what’s life without these conundrums! Directly from the fashion capitals of the world we bring you the latest trends, what’s hot and what’s not. Think velvet, leather and lace, tribal and flower print, just to name a few keywords you’ll have to remember for next season. We start off dramatically with John Galliano’s cinematic view of women and move along through the Haute Couture family, from De La Renta to Vuitton, Hermès and many, many more. Guys will be happy to know that we’ve saved you some eye-candy too, after all ES is all about equal opportunity. Because there’s a very fine line between ‘trendy’ and ‘unfashionable’ which more often than not comes in extra shades of grey, we rounded up some ESSENTIAL items to wear for almost every occasion. But remember, nothing says it worse than wearing the wrong thing at the wrong time – not even being caught with last seasons’ drabs at a trendy dinner party – so be sure to check out our Day & Night rulings. And, especially for the working readers, we’ve put together a few guidelines of what not to wear around the office. If you’re into statistics and lab experiments, check out our ‘Fashion & Sex’ columnist report on human behavioural responses to beauty. The findings were... unexpected. Next month ES comes full circle to celebrate Christmas, arguably our favourite holiday. There are few other better excuses to waste the days away at the arcades, window shopping and maxing out credit cards - all in the spirit of the season, of course. And there’s always a loooong shopping list, for Him, Her, the Kids, the Gadgets, for the Home, the Office - plus all the gatherings and events that take place during the holiday season. You’ll be lost without a guide! We always crave your feedback. The first issues of ESSENTIAL were met with enthusiasm from many a reader and we thank you for your encouragement and suggestions. If you have something to share, please keep it clean and write to us at ESSENTIAL@macaubusiness. com. Go ahead, indulge yourself in the best the city has to offer and enjoy!

Babydolls

Camisoles

As comfortable and delicate as they feel and look, all that lace won’t last long if you “really” sleep in it often…

Wear them for your comfort at home. Just make sure your neighbours are not looking. Camisoles for summer – sleeveless and exposing the midriff, who doesn’t wear them?

Equivalent to light short dresses over the knees - fresh and easy to wear

Bustiers

Kimonos

Great if your objective is to get them taken off by your other half, otherwise they can get uncomfortable

Great as a throw on, what else? Kimono inspired dresses or jackets, made of embroidered silk or cotton. French label Kenzo is a specialist and you get to wear them on a daily basis!

Jeans over bustiers – great for summer looks. Remember Madonna’s dramatic example wearing a JPG creation?

Corsets

Pyjamas

Too great not to be shown…

Only for cold winters, and preferably made of flannel…

Corset and skirt – “Grand Dame” style, Hollywood favourite for the red carpet

Pyjamas during the day… in China, maybe…

Garters

Mules

Unless you are getting married.

In the bedroom might be the only place you should wear them… so out of style!

We wonder what else you can do with them…

No. no. no. Please, too big a faux pas!

Suspenders

Pasties (nipple covers)

Well. They make everything better…

What can we say? They look great if your bust size and form are right!

Picture Larry King… do you feel the bad vibe? Keep to the night option…

In Brazil, beach goers often wear them instead of going topless…

Winner? Daywear… you can wear the same you wear at night but during the day!

sins at work What not to wear

How good are you at avoiding fashion faux pas? A bad judgment can scupper that promotion you have been longing for, or even that job you want! 1 Exposure of cleavage – showing too much is often considered the main problem at work. Studies show that women who go to work dressed in very sexy attire are most likely to be passed over for a promotion! 2 Short Skirts – too short is not good either. People might think you are trying to compensate for what you lack

in professionalism. Do you want people to look down instead of looking at you straight in your eyes? 3 See-through – If what you are wearing, in certain lighted areas, becomes see-through, you have stepped over the line. It is not a conservative attitude - it is simply respecting others. 4 Over-accessorising – besides the

obvious part: you don’t want to look like a Christmas tree. Wearing costume jewellery with too much make-up is a no-no. 5 Too much perfume – When people start passing out around you, you’ll know. One or two sprays are good enough depending on the brand you are wearing. Keep it to a minimum.

JOHN GALLIANO

SPRING 2010 COLLECTION

A cinematic view of women ohn Galliano, the enfant terrible of world fashion, proposes a new, hightech look for the Spring/ Summer collection – creating a cinematic dream like scenario. The Spring 2010 collection is considered one of his best ever. His Paris show was one of the most talked about events of the fashion week. Galliano said his inspirations were old Hollywood heroines. The result is a collection filled with poetry, highlighted by the use of chiffon dresses cut with lace insets, plissés, puff-shouldered blouses, 66

back tulle, point d´esprit sleeves and film gel! Its palette of ice blues, powder pinks, strong yellows and silver lamés were masterly combined. His romantic image, a signature style developed throughout the years, strongly present in this collection, is underlined by a futuristic look. The Galliano woman for Spring is daring, strong and modern, yet the Galliano man somehow comes out of history, with Napoleon Bonaparte as the inspiration.

The creator used a mix of tailored and not tailored pieces: denim jackets with cuffs encrusted with embroidery; coats became multilayered, providing a floating sense to the wearer. The models were Napoleon soldiers, some resembling Arabic nomads in the desert, wearing tulle layered coats in black and desert based palettes, including yellows, reds and oranges. Harem shorts seem to be in vogue again, as well as head wraps, according to Galliano.

Angel sleeves: Long loose flowing sleeves, very popular in the sixties and seventies. Androgyny: A look of indeterminate gender, often featuring traits associated with the opposite gender to the wearer. Aviator sunglasses: Fashionable, oversized style of sunglasses, often worn by pilots. Baroque: Descriptive term for expensive, extravagant and elaborate ornamentation, verging on the excessive, and of the style of popular art, music and architecture in the 17th to mid-18th century. Blouson: Bodice or jacket gathered into a cuff at the waist. Bomber jacket: Waist length cropped jacket with a rounded or puffed out body. Large but fitted arms are elasticized at the wrist, sporty looking often with zip fastening from waist to neck. Brocade: Rich weave fabric with a woven design of raised figures and floral motifs, pattern emphasised by contrast in weave or colours. Catsuit: All-in-one garment, usually zipped or buttoned from navel to neck. Popular in the 1960s owing its name to the tight, slinky feline silhouette the wearer would adopt. Cocktail dress: The short knee length dress shape of the 1920s, lightweight wool, satin, silk and velvet fabrics are usual and often cut to reveal the shoulders and arms. Damask: A fairly thick and glossy fabric of many textile fiber combinations. The pattern can appear to be both dull and matte depending on which way the yarn has been woven. Traditionally used in gowns and upholstery. Draping: Technique of hanging fabric in folds or covering with fabric in loose folds. In draped garments, hemlines are often uneven. Fatigues: Military combat apparel. Funnel: A large over-sized neck shape, stands away from the neck. Similar to the turtle neck but larger. Unlike the polo neck in that it doesn’t roll or fold over. Gilet: A sleeveless over-garment similar to the waistcoat though often baring a zip front. A sporty addition to the wardrobe, popular also in leather and fur. Hipster: Style for skirts and trousers where the waist band fits low on the hip rather than the waist. Made popular in the 1960s when they were often worn with a large belt. Jodhpur: Trousers worn for horse riding, very full from hip to knee and tight over the calf. Finished with a piece of elastic under the foot. Lame: Shiny fabric made with either gold or silver metallic threads. Luxurious and glamorous. Neoprene: A man made fabric, used for wetsuits and other water sports attire. Has a stiff, body hugging quality that seals body heat in. Peep toe: Popular shoe style where the front section is cut away to reveal the wearer’s toes. Poncho: Traditionally a circular piece of fabric with a hole cut away for the head. Acts as a cape/jacket and is more often knitted with tassels. Spaghetti straps: Very fine, ribbon-like dress straps, popular on Summer dresses. Trompe l’oeil: An optical illusion created by a knitted design. Popular designs are collars and buttons sewn into the actual garment. Tweed: A soft thick fabric, woven from contrasting woolen yarns. Popular fabric for coats and suits for both men and women. Owes its name to the traditional woolen mills alongside the River Tweed in Scotland. Velour: Similar to velvet, soft material of short pile. Used for tracksuits and other sports wear items, made popular in the 1970s.

Spring 2010

Isaac Mizrahi

Sporty yet classic, Mizrahi’s Spring collection is full of contrasts, with silk blouses paired with little wooden hand-bags, suggesting a weekend trip out in style.

Zac Posen

Some outfits make us think we are in Barbie land. Posen’s Spring collection is made of pastels and dark colours, with skirts and pants in soft fabrics.

Mulberry

King among king’s, someone dressed in a De La Renta will always be fine, no matter which collection they are wearing. Pale yellows and greys are a must in Mr. De La Renta’s Summer.

Ralph Lauren

So chic and so sober it looks like the Summer is not there! Classic lines and colours, it makes the perfect fit for less daring but equally fashion conscious women.

Denim mashed up loosely, an inspiration taken from the “Dust Bowl” – an era of workers on the farm, cowboys and pioneer women…

Anna Sui

Louis Vuitton

She plays with colours and patterns in an explosion of life. Not new in Sui’s collections, but this time one will be able to mix it up without really caring.

70

Oscar De La Renta

Marc Jacobs created a very eighties style collection for the venerable fashion house. Hair fantasies abound, mixed with a certain Japanese fashion sense.

Carolina Hererra

A classic among classics. Madame Hererra proposes what she would wear herself. True to her taste, the Hererra house is a sure bet whatever the occasion…

Kenzo

Michael Kors

Calvin Klein

Hermès

Marc Jacobs

Vera Wang

Antonio Marras’ designs for Kenzo have “sun” written all over them. Juicy faded chiffons, gold filaments, and heads wrapped as if we are going on a trip to the Middle East.

Simple and yet conveying meaningful messages - the Calvin Klein women for the Summer are strong and sure, with minimal looks yet still complex.

More colourful then the lower priced counterpart, the Jacob’s collection is luxurious with daring matches.

Pastels in a Spring collection for the first time. Is veteran Kors softening? No, just being different from… himself! Clear and clean lines for Summer.

Sporty and coloured. Jean Paul Gaultier for Hermès proposes a classic elegance with a healthy look to it. Headbands have returned and the Kelly bags design has changed slightly.

Grunge and punky – for a sleepy type of girl? Dark and grey colours for Spring. A style and way of life not everyone might desire ….

Spring 2010

Diane von Fustenberg

It is never late to succumb to a DVF signature dress. She knows how to keep it simple and make a woman, whatever her size, look gorgeous! This year’s DVF proposes a trip to Africa.

Custo Barcelona

We are used to their colourful collections, whether it is Spring or Winter. They make life funnier and the fabrics are great as always.

Vivienne Tam

Jungle fever is stamped all over Tam’s designs, with tunics and skirts flourishing all over. Wonderful for Spring, though not groundbreaking.

Marc by Marc Jacobs

Bright and funny, the lower priced Marc Jacobs collection draws inspiration from the fifties.

72

BCBG Max Azria

A sky full of lights and stars could be a start to Azria’s ethereal collection of feminine forms for a feminine body…

Badgley Mischka

Both are the best at dressing stars and women with slim bodies. Their creations are so classic and yet over the edge! Extremely feminine and wonderfully cut. We want more and more!

Thakoon

Shoes obsessed fashion Thakoon Panichgul – yes, the one dressing Michelle Obama and starring in the hit movie “September Issue” - is all over the news with this well received collection.

Jill Stuart

Geometry and volumes, it is a collection for strong types. Designs are simple, yet not everyone can wear them with style.

interview

“Not too sober” What are the trends for fall/winter this year? Without a doubt, the financial crisis has shattered all designer trends. For the next season all women’s collections are in some sort ways returning to the eighties and the values of the decade: night clubs, working girls, bad girls … particularly at Nina Ricci, Marc Jacobs or and DSquared. The ‘cuissards’ are a must, these high boots are a ‘fetishe’ in Vuitton’s collection as well as in Isabel Marant designs.

Fabien Farge is a French journalist/editor and a ‘fashionista’. He works for television and lives in France. He has a privileged access to the Fashion world and to the new trends, and has covered several shows. Fabien gives Essential some insights on into this world

How areWhat are the best ways to dress trendy without spending much money? In term of trends, and being under the influence of the eighties, we should have a clear touch of 2009, where the uniform is very much in ‘vogue’, but we should not over accessorisze, and this is a good way to control expenses as well. Try playing more with the aesthetics instead of adding on things. Beware, don’t be too sober! Does fashion reflects the general mood of society? Which one is today’s mood? Fashion enlightens the spirit and reflects it as well. In Paris, the mood is velvet, leather and lace – they won the fashionistas over! And they mean sweetness, softness and strength, not in any particular order. Which are the best advisesWhat is the best advice for someone willing wanting to be trendy without overstating it? I would say bet on noble fabrics or materials, like leather or velvet, and play with its their sobriety and lightness. If you can afford it, ‘customisze’ – personaliszed pieces are great and a little accessory will work the rest out. The big thing is in the detail…

Ginza Tanaka’s Purse Is it possible to tire of diamonds and glittering objects? Ginza Tanaka’s Purse is one of the most expensive clutches in the world, and boasts more than 2,000 diamonds totaling 208 carats! The bag is made of platinum. Created by Japanese jewellery house Ginza Tanaka, it features an eight carat, pear-shaped diamond that can be worn separately as a brooch. The clutch’s strap can be taken off and worn as a necklace or a bracelet. This is genius! It makes this clutch an all-in-one fashion marvel. The price? More than US$1 million. Who cares? Whatever it takes for a fashion statement…

Is it good to mix mainstream/cheap pieces with deluxe/ designer pieces? Of course! But with knowledge and without ‘overplaying’, especially with colours or different styles. Don’t forget this is the season for us to play with volumes and lengths, and don’t be shy about heights and high heels! This is the ‘price’ for a refined elegance.

Men Fashion Trends

2

010 will come in colours and extravagant patterns for men’s fashion. It looks like every designer is willing to outdo everything they have done in past seasons. One reason might be the optimism that reigns in some fashion circles that the emergence from the financial crisis is somewhere in the beginning of next year. So the new men will be more androgynous than ever, wearing theatrical clothes, more like costumes. While the ladies ‘sector’ is deeply inspired by the forties, the real male will be playing with fabrics and appealing to an imagery that comes out from movies and/or historical figures. More often than not the look will be ‘futuristic’. Don’t get it wrong – even coutoure houses like Dior, Valentino or Armani, are showing a funny and gay side of it! Gucci

Fashion and sex

Sex and fashion are synonymous. Take a look at the latest Vogue magazine and count how many ads use suggestive messages and photos. But can you really become like the airbrushed (sorry, mac-ed) glossy images? Researchers found real-life to be quite different. An American university tested the emotional responses of more than 100 college-aged women, to photos of attractive models. The participants were invited to point out several images representing different emotional reactions after looking at photos of the models. Some of the images depicted arousal reactions ranging from disinterested to excitement. And the conclusions? The more seductive and explicit the photo, the less interested the respondent. This would seem to run counter to traditional thought. There are six beauty types, ranging from wholesome to sexy. The survey only focused on the first and last categories, leaving the middle types, among them the sexy-kitten and the classic feminine, out of the equation. The majority of the respondents were drawn to the wholesome type of women instead of to the sexy-sensual. And women tend to buy products they identify themselves with. Academicians concluded that sex does not sell as advertisers think, but often, due to constant exposure to such images, consumer habits can be changed. Guess who is perceived as a wholesome beauty? Among others, Jennifer Garner and Katie Holmes…
