The way we move with automotive vehicles is changing fast. The individual carbon footprint each one of us leaves behind chases us like a ghost and in many countries, this footprint is being taxed. In Macau it is not on the agenda, but we hope it will be soon. The more we pollute, the more we will have to pay in the near future – especially if we consider the negative consequences to our ecological balance of driving excessively polluting cars. If we don’t foresee a world without cars, we should at least try to change our habits and look for eco-friendlier vehicles for the sake of our own future. The newly arrived decade promises a revolution in the way we drive, as fuel efficiency and cleanliness makes the headlines all over the world. “Sustainability” and “environmentally friendly” are the words on everyone’s lips and so - and this comes as no surprise - cars are among those objects that must become “clean”. In this Essential Cars issue we join the international trend and look for ecofriendly personal transport solutions – whether they be hybrid cars or those powered by other forms of alternative energy like electricity or hydrogen. Our contribution to helping reduce some of Macau’s carbon footprint is to appeal to future car buyers directly – if you are planning on getting a new car, take into account the new 2010 models that are “cleaner” and just as fashionable as conventional cars. They might cost more, but in the long term they offer more value for money than conventional cars and even make you look smarter! For comments and suggestions, please write to our editor at: essential@macaubusiness.com
OUR ESSENTIAL CAR ISSUE As mentioned in our Foreword, “green” cars are the future – either electric, hybrids, or those powered by hydrogen or ethanol – whatever you can think of, the only requisite is that they don´t pollute. No more dark clouds after accelerating! Manufacturers´ long-term goals are focusing on battery-powered vehicles with good driving range and fast recharging. Imagine what the mobile phone industry went through! It might take some more time, but manufacturers are already betting on this segment. Besides improving the vehicle’s “clean” technology, manufacturers are also changing car weights, making them lighter and designing more active aerodynamics, as well as equipping the vehicles with stop-start systems to save energy and avoid unnecessary noise production and power waste. These are all ways of making cars “cleaner” and more efficient. In other words: allowing us to use our vehicles in more intelligent ways. Macau is not a good example as there doesn’t seem to be much of a “clean” conscience among most of its residents. In a city with less than 90,000 passenger vehicles, would it have been very difficult to equip the entire public transport fleet of vehicles with electric batteries? Or force gaming operators to introduce electric cars as a statement when transporting their guests? Well, let’s not go there. Macau is still very much more money oriented, isn’t it? What does ecology have to do with making money??? Let´s focus on what is good, nice and great for our health – green cars!
Seven tips to choose you car colour The colour of the car might reflect the driver’s personality, but it can be much more important than just good looks! According to a study by researchers at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, silver cars are 50 percent less likely to be involved in a crash resulting in a serious injury than white cars. The least safe colours are brown, black and green. According to optometrists, red is hard to see on the road and is the most controversial of all colours used in cars. Many drivers claim that by driving a red car they get stopped more often for speeding. Half of white car drivers claim that white cars do not get dirty as fast as coloured cars, while the other half complain that they have to wash the car more often just to keep the clean look.
Black, red, and most other dark coloured cars absorb more UV rays than light cars, so they are more vulnerable to damage. White is most visible at night, and it is easier to see red than black. Owners of red and black cars say the interior warms up faster than other coloured cars. This is due to an absorption of heat rays from the sun. This doesn´t sound good for Macau summers… Accident statistics show that grey cars are invisible in the fog and lime-yellow is most easily seen on cloudy days.

Safety design
The advanced front structure consists of deformation zones of different grades of steel, each one with a certain role to play in a collision. The structure is designed to help provide increased protection in a frontal collision. Side structures of different grades of steel and a number of tubes and members are all designed to “move” the
body to the side, helping to reduce the risk of passenger compartment intrusion. Volvo’s Side Impact Protection System helps absorb the forces in order to maintain an adequate space for the passengers. If a rollover accident should occur, the Roll-Over Protection System helps to protect the passengers. An inclination sensor included in

The new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is now available in Macau and as an all-rounder, it certainly packs a punch by Jack Regan
S
ome have called it a squashed-up SUV and others have accused it of being schizophrenic, but there can be no doubt that the 2009 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is a high
performance car with all the latest features, which delivers the maker’s trademark comfort and silky-smooth driving experience. It is also not short on looks - of the sleek macho kind - and packs the
sort of punch you would expect. And it’s not an SUV, it’s an SAV - a Sports Activity Vehicle. With a 4.4 L V8 engine delivering an output power of 407 bhp at 6,400 rpm and 442 lb-ft torque
looking for a vehicle “which provides perfect harmony in meeting all kinds of requirements and demands in life both as a prestigious and elegant company car and as an active leisure-time vehicle”.

at 4500 rpm, it gets to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of about 250 km/h. This biggie BMW 5 Series also features a eight-speed automatic transmission and allows easy gear shifts at higher speeds. But with the power comes a passion for the market it is looking to serve. BMW says it meets all the demands of a modern target group
By way of covering all these bases, the Gran Turismo adds a number of luxury features and a large luggage space to its muscular looks. Its extra-large interior offers luxurious comfort, a slightly elevated seating position for comfortable and convenient access, not to mention superior all-round visibility There are different driving modes: “comfort”, “sports”, “sportsplus” and “normal”, which can be switched to depending on the speed of
the vehicle and the road conditions. It also has a ‘’dynamic drive control’’ button that handles the car carefully in all driving conditions. Other safety features include the state-of-the-art seat belts and airbags: “Our optimised body structure in conjunction with the appropriately coordinated and electronically masterminded passive safety systems ensures maximum occupant safety at all times,” BMW says.

The Gran Turismo’s two-piece tailgate provides exceptional variability and maximum comfort when loading the luggage compartment, which has access points allowing the temperature inside the cabin and the comfort of passengers to be left undisturbed
The wide range of standard features include automatic air conditioning, audio system, and AUX-In connector and integrated Owner’s Manual. There is also a range of optional extras covering navigation systems, USB ports, private music collections, a multi-channel audio system, DVD
entertainment system and a panorama glass roof built with noise control in mind. While not everyone has been complimentary - Britain’s Daily Telegraph called it “a dog’s breakfast” - there is no doubt the Gran Turismo offers a lot, all with BMW’s stamp of authority, precision and reliability. The final word goes to BMW: “This is an unprecedented, absolutely innovative car concept which sets fascinating new highlights in the upper-mid-range segment. It has the essential features of a prestige saloon, a modern sports activity vehicle, and a classic Gran Turismo.”
Go Green!
This is the “green” section of ES CARS. Some models are not out yet, but carmakers are showing a strong interest in this segment, and so are we!
Suzuki SX4 Hybrid The Suzuki SX4 Hybrid is a follow-up on the SX4-FCV fuelcell concepts shown in Tokyo last year, and Paris the year before. But the new model is a four-door sedan. The model combines a 1.2-liter petrol engine with a 50kW electric motor. With the lithium-ion battery pack, the car is capable of driving short distances on just electric power. A five-speed semi-automatic transmission has also been installed. The Suzuki SX4 Hybrid could enter mass production within five years…
Ferrari 599 GTB Hybrid Ferrari is expected to reveal a hybrid version of the 599 GTB during the 2010 Geneva International Motor Show in March. The car should use a system based on lithium-ion batteries and an electric motor, both placed on either side of the rear transaxle. Overall a reduction of about 35% in fuel consumption (equivalent to about 17 litres per 100km) will be achieved. A KERS-like brake regeneration system, start/stop technology and electric boost will also be installed.
BRABUS Ultimate Voltage The BRABUS Ultimate High Voltage is based on the Smart fortwo. First seen at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show as a concept car called Smart fortwo BRABUS Electric Drive, few details were released. But now it looks set for production since BRABUS has released initial specifications. Powered by a lithium-ion battery located under the floor and electric motors co-developed with Tesla Motors, the Ultimate High Voltage will do the 0 - 60 km/h sprint in 3.7 seconds and 0 - 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds. The key element responsible for the pocket rocket’s performance is the light body mass, and 61kW (82hp) and 280Nm of peak torque achieved at 0 rpm. One disadvantage with Electric Vehicles is the lack of sporty exhaust vocals, so to compensate BRABUS has equipped it with an artificial sound generator that can simulate engine sounds like American V8s or racing cars.
BMW Concept ActiveE BMW Concept ActiveE is the latest electric vehicle project under BMW Group’s initiative to produce vehicles that explore solutions to minimise environmental impact. Focused on the requirements of practical use, the study is based on the BMW 1 Series Coupe and embodies the agility and characteristic driving pleasure of the 1 Series as part of an emissions-free drive concept. The maximum output of the new electric drive is 125 kW/170 hp. The maximum torque of 250 Nm/184 lb-ft is available from a standstill as is typical for electric motors. Based on realistic simulations, a figure of less than 9 seconds was measured for the sprint from 0-100 km/h, with the 60 km/h mark being reached after less than 4.5 seconds. The maximum speed of the vehicle is electronically limited at around 145 km/h. The electric drive system draws its energy from new, advanced lithium-ion battery packs developed jointly by BMW and the cooperation partner SB LiMotive, especially for the BMW Concept ActiveE. They enable a range of approximately 160 kilometres in everyday use. An intelligent battery management system helps achieve this range largely independently of external climatic conditions. Additionally, the charging period required for the lithium-ion batteries is very short. It ranges from 3 to 4.5 hours.
Mercedes-Benz 200 B-Class F-CELL First series-produced hydrogen fuel cell car This Mercedes-Benz is being sold as an electric car with better performance than an internal combustion 2.0-litre engine. It also boasts a fuel consumption figure equivalent to 3.3 litres of diesel per 100km in the Euro cycle, or a range of 400km. Power is 100kW (136hp) and peak torque is 290Nm. All the torque is available from the moment the motor starts running. Its top speed is 170km/h, just 26km/h short of the naturally aspirated B200. Average C02 emissions are zero grams per kilometre. The high-performance fuel cell system is based on lithium-ion batteries. The reason for its power is the gaseous hydrogen which reacts with atmospheric oxygen at 700 bars to generate a current for the electric motor. So advanced, it has the ability to start even at minus 25 degrees Celsius. Space is not compromised as the drive components are located in the sandwich floor. And there is no shortage of normal Mercedes-Benz amenities such as leather upholstery, automatic climate control and the COMAND system!
Cadillac XTS Platinum Hybrid Concept The XTS features Cadillac’s 3.6 litre V6 direct injection gas engine paired with a plug-in hybrid system. The latter allows the battery to be charged from a standard electrical outlet, allowing the sedan to provide, in theory, at least twice as much fuel economy as a regular hybrid. The combined system provides an estimated 350 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The most praised feature of the new concept is the in-car electronics system, which has been designed to minimise the traditional buttons and switches, as well as create intuitive interaction between the driver and the car.

contours and partitions that focus air directly into the radiators and away from the new flat underbody. The nose also sports small aeroelastic winglets which generate downforce and, as speed rises, deform to reduce the section of the radiator inlets and reduce drag.
The 2010 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe and Drophead Coupe are expected to see few changes after being introduced for 2009 and 2008. Both are 2-door models that are based on the larger Phantom sedan but are about 10-inches shorter, seat four, and have unique rear-hinged power-closing doors. The Drophead Coupe has a power soft top and the Coupe is optionally available with interior headliner lighting that imitates the look of a star-filled night sky. A 453hp 6.75-liter V12 is the only engine offered and it’s mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Available safety equipment includes ABS, traction control, and an antiskid system. The Coupe has front side airbags and curtain side airbags; the Drophead Coupe has front side airbags designed to protect the head and torso, along with rear rollover bars that deploy in an impending tip. The ´Series 51´ package provides for a virtually bespoke vehicle experience due to the thousands of configurations available through Bentley’s expansive colour and trim catalogue.
The 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, known in concept form as the 200EX or RR4, is a new 4-door, five-passenger, rear-drive sedan which went on sale in late 2009. Although it has often been billed as a smaller, “entry-level” companion to the make’s larger Phantom sedan, it’s really more of a smaller, higher-performance offering. Compared with the Phantom, the Ghost is shorter in wheelbase by about 11 inches and in overall length by 17 inches, making it about half-a-foot longer than the Bentley Continental Flying Spur or Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan. Carried over from the Phantom are its rear-hinged rear doors. The sole powertrain is a 6.6-liter turbocharged V12 mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. An official horsepower figure has not yet been released, but Rolls-Royce claims it will be “upwards of 500” - by contrast, the Phantom’s 6.75-liter V12 has 453 hp. Other details are forthcoming, but expect a full complement of luxury and safety features, along with a Bespoke program that allows buyers to tailor colours and materials to their taste.
Mercedes SLS AMG This model borrows heavily from the legendary 300SL of the 50s and 60s –probably the automaker’s most celebrated design, but it has its own “personality”. It is a true super sports-car with a long 2 metre bonnet and a short rear featuring an extendable rear spoiler, which deploys at speeds over 80km/h. The front-mounted V8 AMG 6.3 litre engine has 420 kW/571 hp peak output and is matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in a transaxle configuration. An ultra-responsive ride comes courtesy of aluminium double-wishbone, sports suspension.

Future Hybrid Sensations! Toyota Prius and Hyundai Blue Will present themselves as great models for Macau’s polluted streets. Why not? If you fancy a new car and have a “green” conscience, please take some time to study these alternatives!
New Toyota Prius Hybrid Model available in Macau The first model Prius was launched in 1997. With the latest models now incorporating the most mature developments of Toyota’s hybrid technology, the line now represents the flagship environmentally friendly car from Toyota. As global sales of over one million units (to April 2008) and the increasing year-on-year sales demonstrate, the Prius is leading the field worldwide. In Japan it broke all the records as the best selling vehicle. This new model comes with innovations in body and chassis streamlining, including the detailed design of exterior features, aiming to reduce air resistance to a
value of 0.25 CD, thereby further improving fuel efficiency. For the 1800cc engine, fuel consumption is at 25.25 km/ liter, which further improves on the fuel economy of the previous model by around 10%. CO2 emissions are a very environmentally-friendly 89g/km. It also comes with a world-first Touch Tracer display meter showing realtime driving information and operated by the steering wheel touch sensor. Three driving modes are available - EV Mode - for driving with only the electric motor, ECO Mode - moderates the response to the accelerator pedal to keep emissions as low as possible, and Power Mode optimises accelerator response to maximise performance.
Some FACTS about Toyota Prius Hybrid 1 It never needs to be plugged in. Toyota Prius automatically recharges its battery through electricity generation that takes power from the petrol engine component of the hybrid system. The system also recovers kinetic energy when braking and decelerating which helps with battery charging. 2 The 1.8-litre petrol engine and automatic transmission model drives very smoothly thanks to the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain.
The driving performance compares favorably with a 2.5-liter sedan. 3 The technology is highly reliable. Toyota began selling the first generation Toyota Prius in 1997 and over 1 milion units have been sold around the world since then. 4 Compared with other sedans, the Prius provides plenty of storage space. The easy access rear storage space is adequate for the stowage of 3 golf bags. The battery is actually
very small, considering the power it produces and fits neatly under the rear passenger seats. 5 Toyota states there is no danger of being electrocuted in a Toyota Prius because the Hybrid technology is “safe technology”. The Toyota Prius battery pack is sealed and all high voltage circuits are protected from casual contact. 6 The high voltage battery does not require any regularly scheduled
Hyundai Blue-Will Concept – first hybrid from the brand The idea that Korean cars could compete with their Japanese rivals was laughable 10 years ago, but today it is a different story. Hyundai’s Blue Will is the proof! Hyundai says the vehicle ‘has exceptionally advanced technology crammed inside its striking body shell’. It will rival the Prius as a ‘familysized’ hybrid but also has plug-in capability to recharge its lithium ion polymer battery pack. Powered by a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder direct injection petrol engine, the Blue Will concept is a parallel hybrid and is hooked up to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Blue Will gets its electric power from regenerative braking, plug-in electricity and engine generation, and the lithium ion polymer battery pack is located under the rear seat so that boot space isn’t overly impinged. Solar panels integrated into the cars panoramic glass roof also contribute to the Blue Will’s cruising range, by providing more charge for the battery pack! Toyota Prius, watch out…
replacement. The servicing schedule for the Prius is the same as a normal sedan. 7 The new Toyota Prius uses normal petrol but combines the petrol engine with an electric motor for more efficient utilisation power and energy. 8 The maintenance cost should be similar to the maintenance of a regular passenger car. The Toyota Prius dealer in Macau provides every new Prius with a 5-year warranty.

Well, the orgies part is not an excuse for you to engage in them, unless you are very, very religious… Every year, there are around 11,000 Americans that get injured while trying out bizarre sexual positions and over 50 per cent of people fantasize more often about money than sex! Every time your female partner tells you she has an headache to avoid sex, you can tell her that sex and a female orgasm is a powerful painkiller because both acts contribute to the release endorphins, very efficient in fighting headaches. Lipstick was said to have been invented in the Eygptian times for women that specialized in oral sex. They wanted their lips to look more inviting! Humans and dolphins are the only mammals and animals in general known to have sex for pleasure… We are not suggesting any orgy inter-animal orgy though! Although it only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg, a man whose ejaculate yields less than 35 million sperm is considered infertile… Having sex 3 times a week burns 7500 calories per year. That’s the equivalent of jogging 75 miles (120.675 km). The more intense the sex, the more calories are burnt: up to 10,000 calories annually…. But we are sure you knew this one!
